Previewing Cardinals Matchup, Predicting Postgame Headlines | Jags A.M. | Jacksonville Jaguars
[Music] Welcome to Jagsam this morning. Penani Stevens, Brian Sexton, and John Oer with you today. It’s week 12. The Jaguars are preparing to head out to Arizona to take on the Cardinals this weekend. This all coming off a really dominant performance against the Chargers here at home last week. Let’s get into our big things for today brought to you by GAA, Government Employees Health Association, benefits for federal employees and retirees. Big thing number one is a new standard. When we talk about that Chargers game, it’s going to be what I think the coaching staff refers back to as the new standard for this football team and how well they can play. Brian, how important is it that they continue this new standard into another week? Well, listen, that that’s the whole goal of of Gladstone, Belli, and Cohen and the regime that they have brought in and where they started. And I know everybody’s thinking about game day because that’s the ultimate measure of what your standard is. But really what the coach has been talking about this week is the standard here during the week from Monday to Friday. Whether you win or whether you lose, you have to come in and do the same things every single week. And hopefully you do them a little better than last week. So the standard is how they work on the practice field, how they eat when they’re in the dining room, how they work in the meeting rooms, how they take advantage of the time in the strength and conditioning spaces for rehabilitation. The standard is set from Monday to Friday, and it shows itself on Sunday. John, yeah, I think uh you know, when you say new standard, you can’t reach a 356 standard over another another postseason team every week like Brian said. But I do think you can you meet the standard of um fewer penalties, of being physical at the line of scrimmage, of playing to your level, and then seeing that uh seeing where that ends up. Um like I said, you’re not going to double another team’s yards or triple another team’s yards in the NFL every week. But I do think Liam believes they can play cleaner, they can play smarter, they can play better. And if if they channel that, you know, to me that’s really the theme this week. Uh, last week was great, but if you don’t follow it up, uh, it loses a lot of importance. Week toeek league. We’ll go on to our second big thing today, which is going to be who’s it going to be? We talked a ton about the injuries for this team, and this week is even more than we’ve normally seen added on to the injury report. Um, we’re hoping to get Brenton Strange back this week, John, but Trayvon Walker didn’t practice yesterday. Any other names that jump out to you from the injury report? Well, Trayvon jumps out. I mean, a DNP after a knee the week before. uh leads you to believe that could be dicey. Uh you’re watching Brian Thomas Jr. I don’t know there I don’t have a great feeling about that but that’s pure uh you know just sort of watching the last couple of weeks. Um I do think they get Brenton back. Uh and I think to me Brian the interesting part will be do they get Jordan Lewis back? Uh if you’re out Trayvon I don’t think you make up for Trayvon being out on this roster. Uh but if they get Lewis back and if Strgo and Green step up a little bit, then you can counter that. It’s worth mentioning that Trayvon went back into the ball game after he was initially diagnosed with the knee in the second half. So, we’ll see where that’s at. I have no indication, but when you look at a team that threw the ball 57 times and a quarterback who set an NFL record with 47 completions, and again, yeah, Jordan Lewis would seem to be important. He was out there running around uh during the portion of practice that was open to the media on Wednesday. Also, you hope Greg Newsome is a guy who can come back. He’s given every indication that he will. You’re going to need your best cover corners out there on Sunday afternoon against a team that throws the ball a lot. Now, they threw it underneath a lot, John. I mean, they they dumped it off to a guy named Michael Wilson who has 37 catches on the season, but he got 15 in the game last week. I think it goes to show that the Cardinals made the most of what they had with Jacobe Brassette and the tight end and this guy Michael Wilson and the third string running back and they put up a lot of yards. So, the defense is going to have to be ready. Yeah, most coaches would tell you they don’t want their quarterback to set the the league record for most completions or because it means you’re probably setting a big record for being behind. But, uh this Cardinals team, that being said, they can throw so you got to rush them. They’ve been high behind a lot the last two weeks. They’ve given up 41 and 44 points in the last two games. Our final big thing today is going to be tight end troubles since we talk about that Arizona Cardinals offense. It runs through their tight end Trey McBride and Liam Cohen talked a little bit yesterday about what the challenges are defending him. A lot of respect for for Trey. He’s extremely versatile, similar in a lot of ways to Brock that way. And um you know, look, you you’ve got to have um eyes on him and understand where he is in the formation at all times in terms of okay, is he attached? Is he in the hip? Is he in the slot? Is he at one? Um and, you know, obviously building a plan around, you know, stopping guys like that is mixing up looks, right? Is trying to give different looks and present them and make sure that maybe you have some some areas in the red area, whatever it is to double them or take away their best player. That’s some some things that we’re looking at. Ryan, this team has had trouble with some talented tight ends. We saw what Brock Bowers did. Trey McBride has the ability to kind of go off and that’s clearly their main target on offense. You know, this guy plays like Travis Kelce. He plays like Rob Gronkowski. He plays like Greg KD. Great energy. Mixes it up whether he’s blocking or whether he’s catching the ball. I mean, this guy’s got a big time I want to play attitude. I I love watching him. I think he’s special. Um I I you hope that Devin Lloyd is up for the challenge this week. You’d love to have Eric Murray, but he’s on injured reserve. Um Antonio Johnson’s going to have to be on his P’s and Q’s because this guy will give you everything he’s got. He had 10 catches in the ball game last week in that loss. But when you watch him play, John, I mean, he’s just he’s a football player through and through. Yeah, he’s really good. I tend with storylines like this, I kind of lump it into the same the Jaguars don’t play well against backup quarterbacks. Well, for 15 years, they haven’t been that good. So, good players, good tight ends have beaten them. Well, good wide receivers have beaten him. I mean, it’s it’s a little bit of that. That being said, this guy’s really good. And I think Liam Cohen said it best this week. Uh, you’re probably not going to take him away with just one guy, one way to do it. You have to give different looks and and and frankly you have to shut down the rest of the offense. So when he gets his few, it’s not a game-breaking few. All right, stay with us here on Jags A.M. after the break. I’m going to go behind enemy lines to learn more about the Cardinals. [Music] Hello, I’m Dan Fields. Welcome in to behind enemy lines where we check in with a media member of the opposing team against the Jaguars. This week we’re headed to Arizona. So, we’re checking in with Arizona Cardinals team reporter Craig Grieloo. Craig, thank you for joining us. Um, it feels like we’ve reached that point of the season where I mean, you guys are battling some injuries, had some reports come out on Wednesday. So, where’s the team kind of at with you guys right now? Well, some good news on Wednesday. Running back Trey Benson had his 21-day practice window opened up, so he’s been on the field. Not sure if he’ll be available come Sunday, but that is at least some good news for a team especially at that position that has been banged up. Amari de Marcato is not going to play this week. So that leaves Bam Knights and Michael Carter if Trey is unable to go. And then for the second straight week, Marvin Harrison Jr. is not going to be available as well because of an appendicitis. So some good news, some bad news, but hey, no one cares about your injuries because every team goes through it. Yes, we all do. We know our fair share as well. Um, on offense, some some moving parts as you mentioned, not quite sure what the running back room is going to look like. The Jaguars have had some trouble with significant trouble with tight ends this year. Brock Bowers had a field day and we know Trey McBride can always be a game wrecker. So, what have you seen from him this year and and how crucial is he to the offense? You know, last season was his first full season as a starter and he had an outstanding year. I think he’s been even better this season because everyone knows about Trey McBride now. I believe the stat going into last week’s game was that Trey McBride was the third most doubleteamed pass catcher uh regardless of position. So there is extra attention on number 85 yet he still continues to be the focal point of the offense. That was even with a healthy Marvin Harrison Jr. certainly Michael Wilson and how he played last week will kind of maybe change things up perhaps for teams coming up like the Jaguars on Sunday. But look, whether it’s Kyler Murray or Jacobe Brassette, the tight end has always been the quarterback’s best friend. And McBride finds a way to get open. And then what has made him, I think, elevate his game to another level this season is what he does after the catch. And then this season with already six touchdown catches after having two last season. So, the Cardinals are doing a good job of finding him inside the red zone and making that production mean something on the scoreboard. On the defensive side of the ball, a cup tough tough uh tough couple of weeks the last two weeks for you guys, but what do you think the defensive focus is going to be for the team going in against the Jaguars this week? Every week defensive players say it every week it’s stop the run. And when you look at this Jaguars offense, especially what they did last week at home against the Chargers, almost 200 rushing yards. So the focal point for the Cardinals will be defensively at least stop the run no matter who’s running that football. and then try to get into known pass situation. Head coach Jonathan Ganon doesn’t believe in the sack number as a statistic as far as a winning stat, but he does believe in affecting the quarterback. And we know Trevor Lawrence with the eight interceptions this season has been prone to the turnover. So if the Cardinals can again make it a one-dimensional offense for Jacksonville, certainly would go a long way for the Cardinals getting it to win on Sunday. Um, can you give me a name or two, an X-factor player e on either side of the ball that you feel like will need to have a good game if the Cardinals want to get a win? Offensively, how about we just go with the lowhanging fruit and Michael Wilson, can he do what he did last week? Probably not. He’s not going to have 185 receiving yards, but without Marvin available, can Michael be that wide receiver one for a second straight week. And then on the flip side, defensively, rookie defensive lineman Walter Nolan the third has only played three games, but he’s already tied for the third most tackles for loss with four. And he has found a way to be disruptive on that side of the ball as far as either collapsing the pocket from the inside outs or freeing up someone else, a Josh Sweat or Zavan Collins, Aas Campbell to make a play in the backfield. Been very impressed by what we’ve seen from Walter Cardinals first round pick this season. injury earlier in the year but now finally healthy. Very good. We will see you this Sunday in the desert. Thanks for joining us. Look forward to it. That was Craig Griu with the Arizona Cardinals in our behind enemy line segment. Stay with us here on Jags AM. Uh we learned a little bit more about the Cardinals um from their team reporter and now we are going to give you our predictions for Monday morning. What we think the headlines are going to be. Brian, what do you think we’ll be talking about on Monday morning? Well, I’m going to stick with my theme all week. You know, these Jags versus those Jags. And I went with these Jags exclamation point. I really think I’m I’m being optimistic. I think Breton Strange returns. I think they run the ball. I think they pass the ball well. But I watching this team all week, John. Um, watching them last week, it’s clear that, you know, Liam Cohen has got this team at a completely different point uh than it has been in a long time. And I think these Jags go out there and handle business. I’m not saying it’s it’s going to be a clobbering like it was last week cuz you can’t predict those kinds of wins, but I think these these Jags will play well. I think they will um run the ball. I think they will pressure the quarterback, create takeaways, and come away with a win that sends them to Tennessee with the momentum that they built last week. Yeah, it’s a big game because you feel like they’ve spent the first nine or 10 weeks, remember, this is a new thing still. And when you start in September with a new regime, you’re still trying to figure out what you are. And it felt like they knew what they were early and then last week the players really bought into that. And you know, I’m not saying they hadn’t before, but there was a okay, we get it. This is how we’re going to win. Uh, and you need to follow that up. So, I do think these Jags is an appropriate headline. One of the things that gives me great optimism about the these Jags. I had a conversation after practice the other day with Sean Ser, the offensive line coach, and we talked about Anton being out and Cole stepping in and and and uh Ezra Cleveland missing some time and just the way that this particular group because listen, they’re the heartbeat of the offense right now. If they’re playing well, then this offense can go do what it wants to do, which is be physical and run the ball. I have the strong sense that that room in particular is in a really good place. Yeah. Uh, and they are the heartbeat of the offense, which is why I went with Segway. That’s professional television here. Um, desert runner or rider did I go with Desert Runner? I say Desert Rider like Um, but if they’re going to win, I think they need to run. Um, I think for the most part, we have seen when the Jaguars are the are the more physical team, they’re usually the better team and they usually win. Maybe an exception or two, but that’s what they believe. Um, and if they’re going to play to their identity, which against a team that you ought to beat, you ought to play to your identity. So, uh, Desert Runners is is what I went with, and I went with Bay Shell Tutin, but it could have been Travis ETN. Any of the runners. We’re all runners. We’re all runners. We’re all runners. We’re all winners. Let’s hope so. That’s right. Um, I kept to the desert theme myself. I said it’s not a mirage because I think a lot is going to come down on the secondary this week and I have been non-complimentary of them at times throughout the season because I feel they can play better. I think this will be a great opportunity. They don’t have a ton of a run game right now. Um their running back has opened their practice window, their starting running back, but I don’t think he’s going to play this weekend. So I think it’s still going to be a lot of Jacobe Brassette and this is a great opportunity for the secondary to come in and shut some stuff down. They’re not going to have Marvin Harrison Jr. who had an apppendecttomy last week. So he’s not going to play. So, a lot of it will be around Trey McBride and then some of the other guys that stepped up last week in garbage time, but I think this is a great opportunity for the secondary to come up kind of prove themselves a little bit. Greg Newsome, I think, will be back. We don’t know about Jordan Lewis yet, but I think Jarian Jones has been playing really great the last two weeks when Jordan has been out. So, I think this is an opportunity for him as well. Listen, if you get those two guys back and you’ve got Jarian Jones who’s playing well, and how about Christian Brazwell, right? He stepped in last week and it looked like he’d been for a guy who’s been on and off the roster, on and off the practice squad for most of his young career, he looked like a seasoned veteran last week and played very well. So much of what they do in Arizona right now is the underneath stuff. You’d like to think tip a couple of balls and maybe Devin Lloyd or Foyer’s there and you could get a couple of takeaways and and get that thing going again too. It’s not a mirage was good because I think that’s what people want to see, right? is prove it to us. And at some point in good seasons, usually a team hits a run where they win two or three in the second half of the season and put themselves from, you know, middling to, oh, they’re pretty good. Um, right now based on the Chargers game, you have some momentum to have one of those kind of runs and uh they need to get a couple and make that Colts game board. If they’re a contender, they win this week. Yes, this is an absolute proof of game and I hope and think they can do that out in Arizona. So, enjoy the game this weekend. We will be back with you on Tuesday as we have that late travel back from Arizona. But enjoy this one and we’ll see you next week. [Music] Hello, I’m Dan Fields. Um, this is an opportunity this weekend for them to go out and show who they are. You know, interestingly enough, the Jaguars in their 31st season have only ever been to Arizona twice, which is crazy. Uh we went Yeah. just scheduling and they, you know, they they redrew the uh the divisions in 2002 and it shook it all up. They’ve changed the scheduling modes. We were there in the final season that they played at Sunundevil Stadium in 2005. We went the weekend after Thanksgiving instead of the weekend before. Um and then we were there in 2017 at the current stadium, State Farm Stadium. So, it’s the least visited place for the Jaguars in franchise history, and it’s just sort of a crazy twist of fate. Well, then no bad memories. We’ll make some good ones. Yeah, I’ve only been there once, and it’s an outstanding stadium. Uh they did not farewell in in the last trip there in 17. They got beat by a backup quarterback uh in Blaine Gabbert. So, uh this needs to be a reverse of that. You can’t relive that. Uh and it’s a big game. They’re all big, but this is a significant game. And like you said, contenders win this game. All right, it’s a later kick. It’s at 4 pm on Sunday. We will see you back here next week on Jag. [Music]

Why does this show have AM in the name when it always comes out in the PM??
Jaxsonville get the birds….
Some day Brian will remember that Kittle's first name is George, not Greg. 😂
