Robo Scores, Rantanen Ejected, Stars Lose In Shootout In Calgary | DLLS STARS POSTGAME

Heat. Hey, Heat. Oh, he faded it down this time instead of the straight up cut it off. That’s the music and production wizardry of our producer Ryan Va. This is the DLLS Stars postgame show. Stars way after dark tonight because why wouldn’t it be the latest game as a second night of the or second game of the CBC Canadian broadcast company slate. That’s why they started an hour late in Calgary tonight. And of course overtime, a shootout, couple injuries, a review, blood on the ice a couple different times. And that’s why it’s 111 a.m. where LS is and we’re starting our postgame show. Alongside Craig Lewig and Sam Nestler, I’m Owen Newkerk. Let’s talk about Luds’ favorite t-shirts, the Faceoff Collection. I loved his description in our pregame show. He said, “One of them’s black with stars on it. The other one’s green with a star on it.” Wow, I’m speechless. But seriously, they are great Dallas hockey shirts that are available now. All dls.com. Check them out. become a diehard. You can get one for free if you for your first year of your annual subscription. And we might even have a special deal coming up next week if you want to get in on some DLSS merch. All dls.com is the site. Guys, I don’t know if you happen to check out the chat, which you can do through Streamyard, not just have to go to YouTube. There are a lot of comments already. Oh boy. And you have to think that it’s going to start with Miko Rantin tonight. Stars lose this one in a shootout. They rally from two nothing down, which is sort of their identity this year, which is spot the other team a couple of goals, find a way to get back to it. I thought they were going to win. But here we go. Miko Ransen ejected for boarding a major in a game misconduct for the second time in the last three games, fellas. This one feels different than the one against Alexander Romanov and the New York Islanders on what was that Tuesday night. Yeah. So, tonight with Yoshi in the background, that’s just going to be creepy Sam all night. Thank you for that. This one feels like there might be supplementary discipline, which wasn’t the case after the game on Tuesday. Yeah. Uh the the moose uh the moose was out of control. The moose wasn’t loose. He uh yeah, he’s going to be getting a phone call in my opinion on this one. And I’m not I’m not sure how he defends whatever he’s going to say. It’ll be interesting to you know, we’ll be able to get that recording at some point. We’ll be able to listen to what he’s got to say. Um yeah, I don’t think there’s any and you can we’re taking a look at it here. And I mean, you can clearly see the numbers. Number one, he kind of bends down a little bit. Um, like how you kind of want to get down and drive through someone. Now, he did not go in with full force. I mean, I I will say that. So, it’s not like he was picking up speed, but regardless of what he’s got a lot of inertia there, Leds, with that mean regardless of whatever the speed limit was, if he was a mile or two under, um, I I think the damage and and again, he was leaking pretty good. So, um I don’t know. I’m thinking of because again on the heels of what happened, you know, on the last one and everything else like that. It won’t surprise me if he gets a couple games. It’s good news that Coronado was able to return, right? There was an injury, but he did return to the game. So, that was good to see that there wasn’t a longer, more serious injury on it. He is, of course, a huge part of the Calgary offense, especially their power play. He’s really, really dangerous. And the only thing I saw, look, I’m not defending this. It’s it’s clear boarding. He deserves the the penalties he got. I heard Razer say on the broadcast and I verified it. He is now the NHL’s penalty minute leader, which is not what you would expect. U he just passed Tom Wilson tonight because of the 22 minutes he picked up in this game. And interesting to note that the two leading penalty minute recipients have combined about 21 goals between them and a and about 40ome points because both of those guys are not just one-dimensional players. I saw Mo and I I’m not a professional lip reader at any stretch of the imagination, but I I saw him on the broadcast. It looked like he was saying to the referees, he pulled up or something like but he pulled up. Does that matter at all in this case? I don’t think Yeah, because I don’t agree that he did. It’s one thing if you know you’re saying he pulled up and and you know that’s an argument for it, but I mean there’s there’s no the big excuses when it comes to boarding are you know it was no it was out of control like the first one. Uh you know he trips over someone. It’s a a freak play. It’s quick play. Uh turning into it is a big one, right? If the guy has the puck facing you at the last second turns away, that’s when you can get accidental boarding. He doesn’t have any of those excuses on that play. He’s staring at the numbers the whole way. And as Lud said, he doesn’t just hit him, he gets low enough to hit him straight in the number. Uh, and he drives him in. And the injury, I mean, you’re you, the NHL is going to use that picture of Coronado skating off, dripping blood straight down off the top of his nose. I don’t think there’s any way he avoids some sort of discipline on this one. You know, you you guys, I’m sure, have heard Brian Burke get on his pulpit at times over the years. Oh, yes. He’s been a a big proponent of the bear hug in in that in that scenario. Like in other words, you’re going to come up behind a player. You you kind of know where you are and you know that you’re behind him and you’re kind of, you know, you got your momentum going. You reach out and you actually give him a bear hug and you carry him into the boards, take him into the boards and you’re you’re really trying to to stop some of your momentum momentum and actually protect the player that you’re going into the boards with in a way. And so I mean you look at it there that might have been something different if that would have happened. I don’t know if they would ever do that but I’m just saying when you’re when like as Sam just said again as you’re bending down and your shoulders down and the numbers are I mean it looks like a billboard the numbers do. So there’s there’s no excuse and and I think he saw the number the other thing you know and they got a little stopwatch on it and all that other kind of stuff that they do. So, but I think the numbers were were clear to him way before he got within a few feet of of following through. Is there any justification whatsoever? I’m not trying to make the argument, but just asking the questions. Is there any thought or possibility that because he was ejected midame and it wasn’t, you know, I know sometimes they say, well, early on the game, maybe it’s more of a of a time served. Is there any way that a five in a game is enough for this hit in the eyes of the NHL? No, not in my opinion. Again, if you’re gonna if you’re gonna use that part of it, you’re probably going to use also what happened in the previous game against the Islanders. You know, I think you’re you’re kind of I mean, the guy the guy has not made him made a good reputation, right? as much as he’s the first one was no one disagree or no one on our show disagrees that that was a freak play and everything that went into it, but he’s got the the way it looks on paper is he has two boarding majors game misconducts in three games and in between those he got a $2,000 fine for multiple embellishments. The guy is not in a good spot with his with the boss Gary Bman and I don’t think there’s any way that he avoids something on this one. The irony is he was just fined $2,000 for his second offense for diving embellishment, which was the play. What was the date? Was it November 11th? I think it was against the Ottawa Senators where he skated across the Ottawa goalie and was right. Yeah, it was Mark had his arm up, his uh his glove trying to give a little sort of uh you know, make himself extra big. They do the goalies do that a lot to try to sort of not obstruct four checkers but just you know get and ransin grabbed his arm and then kind of almost did like a hip drop on the his arm just grabbed it and and brought him down maybe looking for a call didn’t get it. Well that was the second one because apparently he picked one up against the Canucks back in October. That would have been his warning the and I think he’s had multiple since to be honest with you. Well, not that we are aware of publicly, but we do know that that he was fined $2,000, which is the amount for that second offense. He’s not the first player in the league this year to do to be fined for diving. Uh the we we did the math. The percentage of his daily salary, let alone his annual salary, is laughable. It’s about Luds, it’s like us getting fined about 25 cents for doing something. I don’t know if it’s much of a deterrent, but it’s part of the rules. And here’s the other thing I’ll I’ll bring up. He’s never been suspended in his 11-year NHL career. And if Hockey Fights, the website is correct, hockeys.com, that was his first career NHL fighting major as he was jumped by Jonathan Huber. He’d never dropped the gloves, at least as far as I’m aware of until tonight. It barely dropped him tonight, too. He was turtling just trying to get away from that. I’m a little luds. Are you surprised at all that he did that? I know he’s not a fighter, but I don’t think Hubbero’s a big fighter either. And to to now. Yeah. No, I’m saying are you surprised at all that Randon kind of turtled himself a little bit and just tried to get away or is it just so much going on and he’s not really expecting to get jumped like that? That’s just a weird play to me to to not try to stand up for yourself even though you’re kind of the player is standing up for himself. I well I I I think first thing is as soon as he you know painted somebody to the boards you have to expect that I mean you have to expect somebody’s coming and I think he’s fortunate that it was Huard to be honest with you it could have been you know like Klepa or was that is that is it KLA I mean KLA is the big check forward yes yeah that’s what I mean it’s a good thing it was Hubo instead of him so coming at him to be on the ice so I you know I I I just again I don’t think he’s been in this situation a lot where he’s, you know, been involved in fighting. So, he’s probably going, “Hey, what what did I do wrong?” Maybe he doesn’t realize what he did wrong. Maybe he’s just a a big moose and doesn’t know his uh his own strength. But like when the your puppy gets too big and he destroys everything in your house, Sam, I just pulled it up again and watched it. I’m not trying to argue that he doesn’t deserve a suspension or that it wasn’t a really bad hit, but I will argue your use of the term turtling because I’ve seen guys turtle. Miko Rantin and didn’t turtle. Now, did he latch on and they sort of throw a couple of crowd-pleasers or something? Sure, it certainly didn’t look like Matthew Olivier, but he wasn’t ducking, throwing his arms over his head and and you know, quote what that what I consider turtling. Yeah. No, that’s fair. I more was thinking he grabs on. All he’s trying to do is lean over and get that kind of somersault. It was more of a wrestling match. Yeah. Trying to get any punches. That’s what I That’s what I should have said. All right. I I appreciate that. All right. Um, anything else? I mean, that’s a lot on Mo Rantin. Uh, what’s the I guess we’ll have to wait until we see what the possible punishment is, but if they do have to play against the Oilers, I What’s your thought? Is it a game? Is it two? Is it more? I I would I would I don’t know. I guess just because of the incident prior to this and the way this one played out, I I think you’re looking at a couple games. And it it won’t surprise me if it’s three, but I don’t I don’t think it’s I don’t think because of the what happened on the prior one, I just I don’t think it’s going to be only one, you know, and again, I guess it depends on the mood everybody is in and player safety, but but I I believe it’s going to be two to three games. What’s the rule? If you get I I worked at the NHL, so I should still know this, but if you get a in-person hearing offered, that means you’re you’re eligible to be more than five, right? Okay. Yeah. You c you can’t get more than five if they offer only a phone hearing. So that if you say it’s going to be a phone hearing, that’s the max. Right. Now, an inerson doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to be more, but it opens up the possibility for more. Yes. So, okay. So, I mean there I think there’s a chance that might just only be a game because well, you’re right. The incident against the Islanders did happen two games ago, but it was an accident and he was tripped and he probably shouldn’t have extended his arms. But I I think that the call was right. He got ejected and there was nothing further there. That being said, I could also see the argument being, look, he’s never done this before and he has no history of playing like this other than, like you said, Tuesday night. I I could see them. And he’s he’s also a star player. Oh, and look what’s on your for Can you see what’s on your forehead right now? You’re talking about the scoreboard? Yeah. What does that say? Says three to2 Calgary. Yeah. Two to three games. There you go. H I didn’t know where you were going with that. That’s right. I would I would think two is the is the hot spot. That’s what I would guess. So I I don’t think you’re wrong, but I’m just wondering if they would give him one just because of the lack of history. And again, he generally that’s not the type of player he is. That’s the last thing I’ll ask you about this and then we’ll move on to our breakdown in the next segment. We’ve seen I we haven’t watched Miko Ransen as closely as we have since he’s come to Dallas, right? We saw him plenty in Colorado, but not like the Avalanche media broadcasters, their fans, where they’re watching him every single night, all the time. So, I guess I don’t know if I have the full frame of reference, but he does kind of seem like he’s playing more physical than I remember him with the abs. Maybe because of the style of play with the team. Maybe just because he’s kind of the guy here, whereas he had Nathan McKinnon, he had Kale Mar. He was sort of the supporting co-star, not the lead attraction. Yeah. I think he’s playing like a young Jaime Ben. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, he he’s always been physical, but L’s talks about all the time he’s more physical in battles than he is in in these running guys and uh you know, throwing these extra little things. He’s he’s trying to dominate on the ice. And he’s doing it some 80% of the time in a great way and 20% of the time a little bit over the line. I think the only good news is that he plays forward and not defenseman because the Stars do have one extra forward on the strip. So if they do need uh Nathan Bastion to come in, they can without having too much chaos in there or maybe Matt Duchain makes a miraculous. Maybe he does these games. Well, it’ll be a heck of an interesting thing to watch over the next 24 to 48 hours. It’ll be curious to see if the league does something on a Sunday or because the Stars don’t play again until Tuesday, do they wait until Monday to adjudicate this? And if he is suspended, how does that affect again, it’s a long season, but they play the Oilers on Tuesday, then they play in Seattle on Thursday. If they have Miko Ranton in services for zero of those two games, or if they have him for the second one, what do you think? What do you Are we asking how many how many games there are again? No. No. I’m asking you what you think the impact of not having Oh. Miko Ranton in of what we’ve seen through from the time we’ve gotten here. Um I think it’s a big impact. I mean, I I look at not only I mean, just look at what he does, everything that he does as far as creating space for himself, creating space for other people, the passing that that he just seems to I don’t I don’t I don’t know how he makes some of the plays that he does. So, I think you’re missing a huge key. I think he’s a reason. No, Robo’s Robo’s on Robo. Like, I’m not going to say I mean, he’s a little bit a part of that, but I mean, when you look at the rest of the guys, he whether it’s a primary or a secondary assist, he always seems to be part of it. whether he’s bringing uh coverage because he’s so dangerous now, maybe he brings a player and a half to him, so he opens up a little room of space for somebody else. And so I just think everything combined, um, you know, especially if you’re going to go in and play against, you know, a Conor McDavid and Leandry, you’re now you’re missing one of your big pieces and they’ve got, you know, theirs in intact, so to speak. So yeah, I think I think it’s a it’s it’s a it’s a big piece that would be missing should you get a game or two. All right, coming up after this break, we will do our full breakdown of tonight’s game. And boy, do we have some things to talk about as the Stars and the Flames end up in a 3-2 Calgary Shootout win at the Saddle Dome here on the DLLS Stars postgame show? Yeah, boys, what kind of dreams did you have when you were a kid? For me, it’s pretty simple. all of those sports. Didn’t end up quite making it. Although I did play in the Dallas Stars alumni game and chip it off the boards and get a change. So that’s kind of as close as I got to the NHL. But when I got further on, I started wanting to start my own business. Started marketing, writing for companies, doing obviously the hockey stuff, whether it was Substack or other other things that I was doing on my own. If I were to sum up the first period, I would say Devin Culie because a bunch of people I were seeing responses on Twitter in the second and third periods and I see in the chat people saying the Stars didn’t play very well. I I actually push back on that. The Stars were dominant in the first period. I think they could have had a three, four, five goal lead. That’s how many unbelievable GradeA chances they had. And Devin Kulie stood on his head tonight. I mean, what a He’s never played against the Dallas Stars. They’re going to remember Devin Kulie for a while after that one. Yeah, I talked about him before the game. He just no matter how well his team’s playing, he has stepped up this year. And his save percentage tonight, I think, was somewhere 933, something like that at the end of the night. But his his start was similar to uh what Casey or Jake a couple games ago, a few games ago when the Stars were just flailing around on their own end and Jake held him in uh and then they got their game going. That’s exactly what happened tonight. I think they had the first six or seven shots, chances in tight as Owen knows, high dangers all over the place. Uh but they really were they were back door passes, deflections in tight, rebounds in tight. Uh ranting in driving all alone in front and he not only made the saves, but he looks so calm. And that’s when you know you’re in trouble when the goalie is making the save and he looks like he’s already there by the time he’s making it, punching it perfectly into the corner. He he set a tone for that and allowed them to kind of get their legs a little bit. I I think you’re going to you’re going to see this from a lot of goalenders with Dallas coming into town or if they’re coming to Dallas because they’re, you know, the word is out, you know, that they’ve got the ability to put up some some points on the board and they’ve got an elite group of guys that can make plays in tight. I mean, I just look at Hint’s goal. I mean, how he how he gets it off his stick. So, I I just think that goalenders and they should be. I mean, that’s just part of what you do. And but I think when you’ve got a team when when you look at what this thing looks like for the Stars, I think they’re going to have their agame ready and I think they start thinking about it in the morning skate and they’re preparing themselves for, you know, for some high quality chances against them. The the crazy thing for me was usually you’ll see a smattering of chances and maybe a handful of high dangers period. This was ridiculous because right from the get-go, every chance was a grade A. Rantin goes right to the net. makes the save. They get a power play. We had Johnston, Robertson, Rantin, Johnston, Robertson again, all with really, really good looks. And with the exception of the rant andin shot that hit the post, Kulie made a handful of saves before the Flames ever had an opportunity to test Casey to Smith. The first one they did was a point blank chance for Matt Coronado on their first power play. Then Steel had a short-handed breakaway. I think the first eight scoring chances were all 10 bells. It was crazy. But then eventually Coronado on their second power play puts it home. And Luds, I know you wanted to talk perhaps a little bit about defensive zone coverage and structure on the penalty kill on that goal as Calgary made it one to nothing. Well, speaking of home, we call the home plate area in front of the goalender. You want to be in the house. You want to be in your own house. Um, yeah. I Nobody was home. I mean, again, a couple steel shots here. I just there’s just so much white ice in front of the goalender and I I don’t understand it. Like Mro’s chasing back and and Essa is covering Essa’s covering the far post in case it goes off the post. Um, and there’s just nobody in that dangerous area. We’ve seen it. I mean, just look at this. And so I don’t it’s they’re really concerned about the back door, it seems like. And um but but sometimes our forward isn’t in the per, you know, in that spot to be able to help take the back door away. But to me, the the dangerous area is right in front of your goalender. And and I just find that they’re getting there too easy. I mean, when Coronado Coronado wants to pull this move off here, when he can spin back, pull it from his backhand onto his forehand. And you can see from the first picture where Esso was, he doesn’t really move much by the time this puck goes in the net. He’s still standing on the other side, on the other post, and he doesn’t even get close to getting stick on stick on puck here. So, I I just don’t I don’t know. They’re obviously got something in mind that they’re trying to do because they we see this quite a bit. Luds. Ryan, can you go back a couple things if that’s possible? I think when the pucks maybe one more when the puck’s in the corner a little more. Yeah. So, right here, Luds, it I may be very wrong on this, but to me on that replay that I after watching it back a couple times, it looks like Wyatt Johnston goes way way out and chases to that far blue line where those officials are standing right back there. I it didn’t look like a bobbled puck. Didn’t look like his backwards to the you know to the play like there was any kind of you know key moment for him to jump him and try to make a play. He just kind of chases him up there and all of a sudden he makes one little pass to I think Hubedo. There’s a great angle. So he makes that pass down low and then Johnston’s out of the play. Mero has to step up and try to take Cadri and all of a sudden Coronado’s alone. Is that is that as simple as that? just a couple getting a little bit out of position and everyone else trying to make up for it or is there something they’re trying to do with that pressure up there? I’ve talked about this going last season is they they go racing out to people even off of face off. They they race out to to someone that’s standing there looking at them with the puck and so but they’re being told that. Okay. I mean they do it all the time because and again you talk about mural covering up mirror the you don’t have to go out there to cover up. All you have to do is take a step to your right and then you’re in a shooting lane. And when you’re in a shooting lane, especially on the power play, those forwards will will pause a second. They’re not going to drill it into your sha your your shin pads. They’re going to try to make another play. Well, what that does is it gives Wyatt time to come back. And in this steel shot we’re looking at here, Wyatt’s four feet away from him and this puck is already leaving. Yeah. The stick, right? And that that because somebody’s standing there looking at you coming out and then and again then Mirro comes out and see Mero can do the job from here. He could still be back a little bit deeper and and if the player that ends up getting the puck here, Miro’s in a shooting lane. So now what you did is you had you bought some time for Wyatt to get back into the play and then again like I say for the offside forward, we start to back away from the middle of the ice. So and and right there that’s a perfect example where he was. If you go back one frame, go backwards, Ryan. Yeah. See, he’s actually closer to where you’re supposed to be. Not quite where you’re supposed to be, but now as they’re getting closer to the net, our our forward on the offside, backs out of that area. And so now it just opens up, you know, a little more room, and you got good players with good hands, a little time and space, and it and it turns into this. And he’s he’s outside the dot there, LS Kadres. Like he’s not even a shooting threat. It’s not even like he’s standing there on the inside of the circle and Mero’s got to pick which one’s dangerous. He’s standing outside of this faceoff dot kind of curling towards the net. It just felt like a weird I didn’t know if it was just rushed and they made a wrong read or if there’s something they were trying to accomplish, but it just wasn’t well executed by really any of the four. Well, and there were there’s other examples and not necessarily all on the power play. There are some that are five on five that you know again that that area is open again and again and you know we’ve talked a lot about Gully’s system and things like that and so but on the penalty kill it’s just more confusing to me when you’re when you’re short a guy and you’re trying to take away the most dangerous area of the ice and try to help your goalender in there it’s basically saying ESA’s gonna take the the one-time over here and Casey you’re going to take the point blank shot and I guess that that’s what it seems like they’re writing down on paper. I’m not sure. The first period belonged to Devin Kulie. Obviously, Matt Coronado scored that goal. Stars had some great chances at the end of the period, including Sam Steel, who tow dragged into a middle and took a shot on a two-on-one. Robo had a catch and shoot. Kulie was great. I had high dangers at 11 to three stars in the first period. I don’t remember the last time I I saw double digit high dangers in one period for either Stars or their opponent. I mean, that’s just an absurd amount of highquality chances. And Kulie was stunning. For all that though, guys, I go to the second period and it was Casey De Smith who turned and answered right back with I think I had six high dangers for Calgary in the second and he stopped them all. Yeah, just returning the favor and I I guess they felt like Casey was cooling off down at the other end of the rink. So, they had to warm him back up again because uh it was uh open season down there. Boy, and and didn’t it at Flip Bloods the difference between the first and second, it felt like the second period, Calgary, I don’t know if they were booied by their goalie in the first, but Calgary just seemed like they were playing downhill hockey after that. Yeah. I mean, again, they got on the hunt and, you know, and I guess that they they’re coming off their last game, I think there was some positive energy and and they didn’t come out the way that they wanted to and they probably had a little chat uh whether it’s on, you know, on the bench in between periods, whatever, but they they had a different gear and Dallas couldn’t answer it in the beginning. Well, and then of course the end of the period, you had the ransin boarding on Coronado. We just spent the entire first segment on it. That’s where we’re at. We’ll get to the third period overtime and the shootout next here on the DLS Stars postgame show. I’ve never heard a Ranger fantasy camp read just quite like that. Let’s talk about prize picks. So guys, you I was telling you a bit about prize picks the other night. Well, I I decided before the game this evening, go ahead and make another prize picks lineup. This time I did a five pick flex play. I picked Casey De Smith, less than 2.5 goals allowed. I got that one right. He gave up two. I got one wrong of my five. I went with Devin Culie more than 2.5 goals allowed. He gave up two. They almost scored a third. We’ll get to that. So, I was wrong on that one. But then I got Alexander Petravic less than one and a half block shots. He blocked one in the game. I picked Wyatt Johnston more than 1.5 shots on goal. He had seven shots on goal tonight. How about that? Answering my pregame questions. And then I went with Mero. More than 26.25 minutes of time on ice. He had 32.24. Well, it turns out because it’s a flex play. I was able to be a winner. So, a $20 bet on that one. I won $30 thanks to Prize Pick. So, download the Prize Pick app today. Use the code DLLS to get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup. That’s code DLLS to get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup. Prize picks. It’s good to be right. All right, guys. Let’s talk about the third period. So, you have the Rantin ejection. Hubo gets the instigator. There’s four on four hockey, weirdly enough to start. And then after the minor for instigating goes away, then the Flames get a power play. Well, fouron four hockey was just like in overtime felt like a time waster. Yeah. Because the very first shot attempt in the third period winning the net. And that was Raasmus Anderson with a massive Joel Farabe screen in front. It was a long way away. Hey, I was surprised it went in, but I don’t know how much Casey saw of that shot. He was surprised it went in. He doesn’t see anything. There’s four bodies in front of him and there’s a couple white jerseys in front of him. I don’t Here we go again. Yeah. Oh, look at this lineup. They gave that goal to Fabby as well, by the way. Yeah. Did they change it? Yeah. Yeah. Oh, how about that? I didn’t think he got a touch on that. Yeah. Yeah, he did. Well, look at Did it hit his leg? Because it looked like he picked his foot up. Well, yeah, it hit him. He’s talking to Casey here the whole time. So, but but again, I I I look at at what we’re doing here in front of Casey and alls we’re really doing is we’re just putting more distractions in front of him and then you’ll get a better look from the back. Um but but again, see my opinion is in Mirro, you can see Mirro’s got a stick up in the air here. So, he’s not moving anybody one way or another. Essa is not in the picture. Nobody’s moving anybody. They just come in there and they set up. So, yeah, this is the one here. So they’re really doing nothing. And you know, in my opinion, you got to do a better job. I think that’s Oscar B. You got to find that shooting lane a little bit better. If you’re that high forward, you got to get in that lane. But but at the end of the day, um I just prefer you try to do something to move people in front of your goalender. And again, what did you say Muriel had tonight? 32 minutes. 32 minutes. 32 minutes. Yep. Okay. So, I’m guessing he had between six and seven, maybe eight minutes on the penalty kill. I didn’t look at it, but and I’m sure Essa had the same if not a little bit more. So, Miro had 629 and Essa had 437s for Essa was gone. Oh, that was the Yeah, because of the injury, right? But, but I I mean, for for what again, I’m not picking on Merill. I I’d say the same thing. I think that you could save a few minutes, save some miles on on Miro, especially Petro can do that or Bishell can do that and they’re probably going to be a little bit more physical on the guys that are standing in front and it’s not laying down a red carpet to come in there and, you know, set up in front of your goalend. So, two nothing because of the Joel Farbe goal. Thank you, Sam, for correcting that. Uh because I remember Far went through the handshake line, but they had given it to Anderson. Anyway, Blake Coleman had a great chance on a yet another penalty. Stars got into some penalty trouble early in the third period again. And anybody else not like that penalty on Ratic Foxa? I thought that was a really bad call. Seemed like a battle, right? He’s going, he’s short-handed. He goes in on the forch. He puts his, you know, check onto the shoulder of Raasmus Anderson. Anderson falls down. It’s going to be a point blank because Fox the puck comes out front. It’s going to be a point blank short-handed chance. And I feel like the referee reacted to Anderson falling rather than Well, guess what? It’s a contact sport. He had the puck. It wasn’t like they called him for holding, which was kind of silly cuz as Razer said on the call, Fox had both hands on a stick. It’s hard to hold when you’re holding the stick in both hands. But anyway, beside that, they get rid of they avoid that. And then as the third period unfolds, Jason Robertson scores for the sixth straight game. Think about that. He has 10 goals in his last six games. He had three going into that that run where we were talking about a nine-game goal drought. He had scored two the first two games of the year. Then he scored one, then he went up nine with with zero. Now he’s up to 13. and looks like he could score just about every time he shot. Yeah, he’s feeling it. I mean, you know, I mean, and and again, even the goal that he scores here, um, all he does is he’s using a defenseman for a screen. I mean, he’s he he understands all these things and it and it probably isn’t a super dangerous shot, but but he what he does is he catches them with his legs. There’s a little spot between the legs and the stick, and he gets it to go five hole on the defenseman. And I’m not sure if if the goalender can pick this up, you know, coming out from behind him. Um or if it just catches him off guard. But again, you can’t you can’t go into as a goalender, you can’t be going into the game going, man, he he fooled me. I didn’t think he’d shoot it from there. All you have to do is look at his stats. He’s getting seven, eight shots a game. He’s shooting the puck from everywhere. But but again, smart play by by Robo using a defenseman for a screen and, you know, he goes right through the wickets and and it beats Goender. That’s I believe his long tied for the longest of his career. Six straight games. I think Josh said that. Yeah, I think you’re right. I think I heard that. Yeah. And uh Sean and Capo Biano get the assist. So Capo gets his first point as a Dallas star this season. I trying to remember if he had any points last year. I suppose I should look it up. The Casey Desmith show rolled on because he stoned Nasam Cadri from very close range in the left slot. The one thing, Luds, that you were kind of rolling your eyes at me in our group text, but I was right. For all the danger chances that Dallas created, and they had what I said, 11 in the first period and ended up with a I want to say close to 18 or 20 high dangers, which is an obscenely high number. They also are giving up way too many grade A’s against. There’s too many. You talked about the structure on the power play that Coronado scored earlier, but the constant theme is, you know, Blake Coleman wide open in the slot on the power play, missed it wide. Uh we getting into the the the house, the the home plate area. Cadrey meandering into the left slot and shooting wide. I could go on and on with this. They’re giving up middle ice way too easily. Yeah. and you you you want them to be as dialed in or if not more dialed in in their own zone than they are in the offensive zone, you know, and I think we’ve it’s a team that likes to score goals and a team that has a capability of scoring goals, but but the message has always been, you know, we take care of our end first and then you’re going to get your opportunities and, you know, with the guys that you have and the goalenders you have, you know, you’re probably not going to give up more than two or three goals a game when you play the right way. and the way that they move along down at the other end of the rank. They’re going to win the majority of their games by scoring three or four goals. We know that it seems like they’re going to score at least one, possibly two on the power play alone every night. Well, they were able to tie it because of a great play by Jason Robertson, who had another great a chance, was denied by Kulie, but then this little backhander to Rope Hints and the quick release. Hence had a really good look on the power play in the second period that was denied by Kulie, but this time he got that puck off his stick really quickly. Kulie didn’t react. I again I don’t think I really blame the goalie. This is just a great pass and a great finish to tie the game with 3 minutes and 7 seconds left in regulation. I thought you were going to say hints had a really quiet game, right Sam? Yeah. Yeah, they the the the the release here, the steel shots don’t do this justice. I I went back and looked at this so many times and I I I can’t honestly I couldn’t believe how much he got on. Not how not how quick he got it, but how much he actually gets on the shot because he pulls it in and he doesn’t he shoots it right from there. I mean, literally right from off his toe and and you know, and again, that’s pro it was probably more about the quickness and the release of it, but it was still there was still some heat on it. So, you know, and he I mean, there’s two guys right next to him and to not hit one of those sticks or get picked off from the back. Um, and it looks to me I don’t know if he gets a clear look at this, the goalender. Um, but regardless, it was incredible. Yeah, you’re And Robo made a nice pass to him, but but hints to be able to pull it in and turn and everything at the same time and get it off his stick is is pretty impressive. Yeah. And Robo Robo just take took over that shift, right? I think he had it up and down the wall two or three times, fend off a defender, turn back, fend off another defender. And for anyone who didn’t play the game, as Luds pointed out, the puck at where it was on rope, he gets a little bit of his hips around, right? But shooting from that spot, it is very hard to get anything on that shot. and he he just gets enough of a of a pivot in his hips to elevate it. And as you said, it’s not like he just surprises him with a quick, you know, release. He he puts some power on it. I mean, that is crazy to put that from that distance over the glove and beat it or over the blocker and he beat an NHL goalie. So, that was an elite shot right after I complained about him not being great in the game. So, I was complaining about the call that they made on Ratic Fox for holding early in the third period. Well, then with under 3 minutes to go and the game tied, McKenzie Wager put the puck over the glass. It’s an automatic delay of game penalty. It’s really not subjective at all. It’s it’s very cut and dry. Then on the power play, John Beecher, who was just acquired via waiverss from the Boston Bruins and played in Buffalo the other night, then plays his first Calgary home game, gets called for tripping. gets a clear can opener as he gets the stick in between the legs of Roe Hints. They get a five on three and before they even had that, Oscar Beck had a point blank chance tonight by And then on the power play, Hints missed the net from a really good look. And on the five on three, Wyatt Johnston had a great look, but it was stopped by Were you guys happy with the five on three? Were you I mean obviously they didn’t score but did did the Stars not having Ransin out there did they do enough with that two-man advantage? I didn’t like the end of it because they had didn’t they come back and and they had just a I don’t know what it was 20 30 seconds 15 seconds or something like that to start the overtime I think four on three and I I don’t and they just they moved it around. All you’re doing is you’re killing your own five on three. You know you you had whatever it was 10 12 13 seconds or something like that. you know, you got you you got a two to one man advantage. And so I I don’t I didn’t know why they wanted to move it around the perimeter and allow it to go to a five on four and and you know, take your chances there. My big complaint in overtime is why we got rid of why the NHL got rid of four on four hockey for threeon-ree. Four on four is way too easy, amazingly for one less player on the ice for each team to sort of just kill the game, right? You can have two guys get forward and still have two guys back and you can tuck all four in and really not give up a whole lot. Especially when it’s four on four. It’s kind of boring and it’s really easy to play to not lose when you’re at four on four. There was one play guys about middle of the overtime. The reason why I’m bringing this all up is because once the power play expired and Beecher came back on the ice, there wasn’t a whistle to reestablish threeon-ree hockey. They played the entire overtime five minutes minus that brief power play time that Leds referred to at four on four. There was one time where Casey covered the puck and then tried to play it. I don’t know why he did. It looked like his guys needed a breather anyway. That would have set up threeon three. Instead, we really didn’t get much of anything except two things. Huber went to the net point blank on the backhand. Casey stopped him there and then Wyatt almost scored on a rebound. I watched that about three or four times. I think that it was going wide anyway, but Kevin Ball did deflect it a little bit further away. Did either of you guys think that puck was going in? Uh, I don’t think it was. It looked like it was going over the over the shoulder, but it was a crazy play because I thought at first I thought got it with his little spinama, but it was one of those plays. I just think that that they should find a way to do I don’t know how you do it, but like going four four on four for 97% of overtime is no fun. Four on if they come out of the box and there’s no immediate scoring chance, they should blow the play dead. Yeah. If the puck and then just start flames having the puck at the end at the other end. I don’t know. I just think it’s so there’s a reason we went away from it, right? Because it became so boring. It’s not very to turn it around. it becomes even more of a possession game and it’s not the way you know over threeon-ree where you get a chance and it goes the other way because you have two guys back. So I just think they they if there’s a way to do it they should find a way because that not that it ever does the way it’s done. I’ve never seen it go full five minutes of four on four. That was crazy. It’s it’s very similar to starting postgame shows at 1 one 1 a.m. Eastern kind of which is super exciting and riveting and everybody wants to tell all their friends and sponsors to support DLS. There’s almost 200 people here, so it’s that can’t be that boring. Somebody’s watching. They’re awake, though. Their computers might be on. Just running. The chat is flying along, by the way. All right, up next, let’s talk about the shootout, super chats, and how much LDS wants to go to overtime tonight here on the DLS Stars postgame show. I’m not sure if the shirts are available though anymore. Are we out of stock or do we still have two left to Oh, there they are. We And that’s still the green and the black one. That’s That’s nice. And there’s only one star on the green one. I never noticed that. I thought they dot the they put them on top the L’s, but but anyway, there’s our face off collection, which uh remember if you happen on December 7th, I think it is. Wear one of those into uh That’s the right day. A little event at uh Hooters. Um you know, just because it says it’s sold out doesn’t mean you can’t wander in with one of them shirts because our GM Ben is going to be paying for it. I understand. I’ve heard that. I heard that. So, Ryan, Ryan, I I was wrong again tonight. Can we pull up if if Mo before he got booted from the game, if he would have given Jamie Ben the puck about three minutes into the game, Jaime Ben would have got his 400. So, can we look at the Jaime Ben shirt just one more time? There we go. He still has the visor on. Maybe when he gets to 400, the visor comes off. Uh, I’m not sure, but but hopefully we can get the visor off Jaime Ben. Hopefully we can get Jamie Ben’s 400 out of there. And I would say let’s pull up the moose, but the moose is behind bars or will be soon. So, let’s just move on to Sam. All right, Les. Well, guess what? If you become a diehard, you get a free shirt and you can pick one of those babies. Sleepy. You can use the uh I didn’t have I didn’t only did a single teaag tonight, Owen. No double teaag action. So, I beg your pardon. That’s why I’m sleeping. Good for you. Die hard. You get a free shirt. You get 20% off merch. You get 20% off events like our takeover coming up really quickly now. I believe within two weeks, if not almost within two weeks. Uh we’re going to do some awesome stuff with the takeover. You get articles, interviews, uh cool little tidbits here and there and all kinds of stuff from that. So, become a diehard.dls.comdieard and then join the newsletter. It’s free. Do it now. It’s one o’clock in the morning. No better time, guys. Uh the shootout was interesting because it’s a good move by Morgan Frost. I can’t stand it. I understand that changing speeds can be tricky for a goalie. I I’ve heard Sean say that the most difficult is to come in with a lot of speed because you have to make the goalie has to make a choice with little time. The thing I don’t like is Morgan Frost as he slows down and cuts across the slot is almost going perpendicular or excuse me almost going parallel to the goal line. I feel like once you’ve hit 90 degrees of a turn your move is over. Go to the net, take your shot, dangle, whatever. But he scored and it was a nice goal and they had a one- nothing lead. Any thoughts on that move? It’s like the Kousnets off that he used to do. It’s just forever and slow and Yeah. as boring as your exclamation. Was that exclamation? Luds exclamation mark at the end of your conversation. There it is. LS is getting sleepy too. The Robertson goal. I love that he went five hole. That was not I think what Logan Cool or excuse me Logan Devin Culie. Logan Coulie is a a forward. I didn’t think he was expecting that. We see Robo go upstairs a lot, but the ability to snap that one low on the ice is I don’t know how goalies stop him. He’s he’s automatic. He’s got so many moves, right? That’s the hard part about him is he comes in that that angle and all you’re thinking is keep the glove up. Keep the glove up and then he you have no idea he’s going five hole or worst case scenario, his third move he brings to the backhand or or something else. So, um it’s just the way he does it. The fact that he is perfect with each move that that’s the problem. if you take one away, he’s going to score on the other option. And that it’s just becoming, as you said, he he could be the best shootout scoreer like ever at the end of this this career. I think it’s I think Zegris has like the best percentage over a certain amount of attempts so far, but I mean, he is just every single time and there’s a good chance at the end of his career that he’s up top of that list. Yeah. You notice that the uh broadcast tonight flashed up a stat where Robo was on top and it was 30 attempts or more. And I think that’s what keeps Ziggress out of it. Whereas if it’s if it’s 20 or more, he’s got the best. Yeah. Whatever. I mean, they’re both incredible. And uh what’s really interesting is that I showed that stat to my my kids the other night and they said, “Really better than TJ Oshi?” Oshi had that absolute reputation, obviously the Olympics, but I think statistically in the NHL it was a little lower. But yeah, then uh Sean just about won it. Hit the post. Wyatt got a glove save from Kulie. And then rope hint shot it and was denied it. Nasm cadri boy that backhand Deak I didn’t think he was going to score from he was such a terrible angle. That’s a ridiculously skillful backhander into the roof from that tight of an angle. I think he’s kind of sneaky underrated in in the shootout. He’s got some good numbers. Yeah. So yeah that was a patience, you know, patience and confidence that he can go that wide and use that backhand and get it up underneath the bar. Led, you keep bringing his name up as a possible trade target at some point. Well, I don’t bring it up that much, but I mean, there’s a couple guys on that team, I think, if they keep going. Well, not the way they’re going right now, but there there’s a couple guys that, you know, could be changing uh area codes and zip codes and everything. Now, we have a couple super chats we’ll get to, but before we do, remember the clip I played in the pregame? Gully said, “Watch out. This Flames team plays hard.” I think they they lived up to the billing. They’re 3-1 and one in their last five after that dreadful start. Are they starting to turn it around or do they just not have enough horses to to put a prolonged streak like this together? I don’t think they have I don’t think they have enough. Yeah, they don’t have depth, right? No. Yeah. If their big guys aren’t scoring, it’s or their power play guys or their power 18% of their power play goals in their season come tonight against Yeah. Well, lately the power play a little bit better for them, but that was after a sevengame stretch where they went over. So, yeah. All right, let’s get to the super chats. One big bong would be enough for Sam. Bang. We should do another one just to get Sam, but that’s okay. U your favorite finger blaster 911 with a Bishel and a Desmmith. Remember, will Gully remember? I think he means win. Remember when Gully asked every player to give an extra 1%. Well, Miko gave 101%. Still my captain. Yes. By the way, uh Sports Guy Tio gifted five super uh one month super chat subscriptions to people, which was very generous. And he said five super chats tonight for Mo probably for the five. He actually got a a game of conduct, too. So, if you want to do the rest of the period and then the 25 minutes of overtime. Well, he got 22 minutes in penalties because he had a minor, he had the fighting major, he had the boarding major, and he had the 10-minute game misconduct, which is it’s a lot. All right, we have one more super chat for you, and that belongs to Harry, who does not need those stinking badges. That’s his bit with a hatcher and you’re after the cup. Oh, Tio just put another 10 super chats out there. Yeah, it is. So that’s all you get. That’s all you get tonight. But boy, what a that Well, he he said for Mo and he gave the five in the the game. So that’s fantastic. Harry said Miko took Mason’s place. Dives bad penalties, lol. You can’t you can’t argue with it. Yeah, it’s tough to argue and I mean I saw that Mason Marchman got the Mason Marchman hattick tonight though. He scored his first with the Kraken falling down while celebrating his goal and then got an embellishment penalty. Did he really? I didn’t see that part. Leds, did you see the celebration the toe pick by Marchman tonight? I’ll send you the clip. He scores. He he he puckjacks on the back check in the high slot. Great defensive play, wheels around, shoots and scores, does his big, you know, arms wide bird celebration. and then towicks and goes just blows a tire and goes down. And it’s it there’s nothing more Mason Marchment than that entire sequence. Yeah. And it’s interesting. Um I heard uh Sean was telling me because Seattle was in town wi in Detroit earlier this week and said that they haven’t been really happy with the play of Mason Marchman. I think that the the hardest g the best game he had was against the Dallas Stars. And I know it’s difficult. He’s moved before, but I think sometimes it’s hard when you change teams like that. L, were you L, Were you traded? Yeah. Where? To New York. To New York. Okay. I I thought it was once. I just couldn’t remember what it was. Yeah. I I got a cup of coffee there on my way to Minnesota. That’s when uh when Montreal and and Minnesota couldn’t come to terms. They actually I I got a phone call from maybe a GM or somebody else like that and he said hey would you uh just wondering if you’re interested in coming to uh Minnesota and I said this when I was in Montreal. He said yep. And uh so anyways he goes okay. Well then I got a call I don’t know I don’t know a month or two later and he said hey just want to let you know they wanted too much for you. He said you you can come next year. So So didn’t want to give up the assets. Yeah. No. All right, guys. So, we have uh our schedule for the week because of the holiday week next week and four games. Those are the only four broadcasts we’ll have next week. So, that means we don’t have a show on Monday or Thursday, and of course, Saturday. So, we have a game pre and post for Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday. It’s a busy week. Yep. But we will have some days off. So, the next time you’ll see us will not be tomorrow or Monday. It will be Tuesday night as we get ready for we have three different words for this thing, but it it’s the watch along. And I think this year Les isn’t calling it the ride along. He called it the driveby. Drive. I believe that’s what he said. So, we will we will be in studio on Tuesday night as the Stars play the Edmonton Oilers. By the way, the Oilers with a huge win in Florida tonight. That’s good. That What time What time is that game? That This might be a sleepover. 9. 8:00. Oh, it’s 8. Yes. Oh, beautiful. I thought it was nine. That’s amazing. It’s a 7:30 pregame show. 8:00 game. We’re doing a watch along, which means you’ll be able to hang out with us. But guys, we’re doing it upstairs this year with headsets on instead of down in the lounge studio. We’ll be up in our lounge on the couches. We’re wearing headsets for I’m gonna be horizontal. You talked to production and the the higherup sleds, but that’s the plan. We’ll be wearing the headsets with the little mics on them. Oh, we’re flying a plane. Flying a plane. Thanks, John. Oilers stars. I think I know we played them already once, but this has to be a big one for Glenn Gullatson going back to Edmonton for the first time since leaving after seven years coaching them. Yeah. wrapping wrapping up the what’ you call it the ex-wives tour. So, I didn’t come up with that term. He said it, but it was a great line. He’s got three out of four points. So, let’s see if he can get a couple more there. That’ll be a big one. It’ll be cool. I I think they should do some sort of thing for him, right? You’d imagine he’s there for seven years as an assistant coach. So, do assistant coaches get uh video tributes? I mean, he was there for a while and ran the best power play in the league for his whole time. I’d give him something. Maybe not a video, but some sort of thank you. Some some good pics of his hair. He He’ll get some kind of tribute on the video on the screen. I would Oh, yeah. For sure. Yeah. So, we will be in studio for that on Tuesday night. We will be on Streamyard like we are tonight. On Wednesday night going to Seattle Stars against Mason Marchman, the Kraken. And then after Thanksgiving, we have home against the Utah Mammoth. First time the Mammoth will come to Dallas this year. And then Sunday, the Ottawa Senators are in town. We’ll see which game Miko Rantin is allowed to play in. That’ll be a big one. We thank you very much for joining us tonight. Stars get a point rallying but lose in a shootout 3 to2 to the Calgary Flames for Craig Lewig. A very sirly Sam Nestler. Our producer Ryan Vauders. I’m Owen Newkerk. Make sure you don’t burn Yoshi Sam. We’ll see you on Tuesday. Have a great rest of your weekend. We all sitting like
