Phoenix Suns Stumbled Upon A HIDDEN GEM

The Suns have stumbled upon an elite role player. His name is Colin Gillespie. He’s just a winning player. He does everything. There really isn’t a weakness in his game. He also has that underdog feel to him just like TJ McConno. I say that because you look at him and you just see a scrawny white boy. Nothing about him stands out in terms of NBA athleticism, but his hustle, toughness, and fundamentals really help offset that. Plus, clearly off the court, he’s putting in the work. On top of that, he’s really an intelligent basketball player. He’s got that point guard mind. He knows where to be. He knows how to space the floor. He will make the extra pass every single time. He’s always making quick decisions. And now, more often, you’re seeing him assert himself as a scorer in many different ways. And it’s pretty clear now this season, he believes he belongs in the NBA. I don’t think that was always the case. Early in his NBA career, he was really, really passive. It definitely took some time to find that confidence at this level. And right now, it seems like every game, the confidence is just oozing out of him. Overall, he’s really a coach’s dream because he can complete any lineup. You can put him next to any archetype. He doesn’t need the rock, but he can have the ball and run in action if needed. He won’t complain. He will do whatever he is told. If you don’t play him one night, he will still be ready for next time without any attitude. Plus, you know, every night effort-wise, you’re getting his best. And he plays mistakefree basketball. He’s averaging 5.1 assists per game off the bench. Currently second on the team, only behind Devin Booker, by the way. But the most impressive part of that, only 1.6 turnovers per game. As you can tell, he’s impacting winning in a big way right now. Now, it turns out per pivotfade.com in the 400 minutes that he has played, the Suns are + 96 + 11 net rating, 122.1 offensive rating, and 111.1 defensive rating. Meaning with Colin on the court this season, the Suns are playing at a top three offense in the league pace and a top five defense in the league pace. He’s earning himself a payday. They have him on a minimum freaking contract. I wouldn’t be shocked if they try to extend him in season because he’s a guy who can help build the right culture that they have been preaching in the off season. Matt Ishbia and their new head coach Jordan A. So yesterday’s film is perfect because he did everything and I mean everything. Here we got a long miss. What do you know? Of course he gets to it first then dishes to debook for the easy two. Now right now teams playing the Suns don’t care about the other guys. They only really care about Devin Booker. It’s about making everyone else beat them. Luckily for the Suns, he’s shooting 40.4% from three on high volume. Six attempts per game. And you see here, he has range. He doesn’t need the perfect pass. Another long miss. Everyone else is stuck in place. Meanwhile, he digs it out. Of course, the right pass right away. Plays like that you forget about or just gloss over. But those are winning plays and this is how you create advantages without supreme athleticism. His big needs an outlet. So now Mike Connley is trying to take that away instantly go back the other way. Now Connley is in freakout recovery mode. So a quick pump fake will do the trick and now he’s wide open. Next possession he’s handling the rock against Jaden McDaniels, an elite defender. McDaniels goes under the screen quickly. He changes direction that allows him to skate around McDaniels and now he has two on him. Quick pass, free floater generated just like that. As I was saying, very smart player. He catches. He has Rob Dillingham on him. So immediately he’s like, “Let me screen for DBook, hoping he gets the worst defender on the court to switch onto Book.” Naturally, there is a miscommunication to stay on book. He’s free. Nice recovery though. No problem. He’s got this one dribble sideep butt naked open three created. He’s got versatility as a three-point shooter, which is very underrated as a role player. He’s not just a standstill three-point shooter. He can move off a screen a bit on the basketball as well. If there’s a reckless close out, one dribble sideep, he’s fine with that. And like I said earlier, he has range, willing to shoot and spread the floor from well beyond that three-point line. And having these skills just make it way tougher for defenses to guard. Later in the game, he’s getting a screen from Booker. McDaniels clearly takes him lightly. And for that, Colin hands him a bucket. Oh, and what do you know? He got the clutch steal smartly. He tries to throw it off Dante. Luckily, Brooks is there. Three-pointer. Debbook fouled out. He’s now the go-to guy. And the pressure doesn’t affect him. The degree of difficulty on this shot. He’s going full speed. He stops, fades back, and has to float it up from 9 ft from the basket. For a floater, that’s a very tough distance. And for his role off the bench, he’s just an efficient basketball player. We went over his three-point percentage. But let’s dig deeper. 81.3% from three in the corner this season. What in the world? Then he’s shooting 40% from the mid-range. Nothing special, but that’s still solid. Then in the paint, 50%. And that’s elite. He relies heavily on the floater in this area, and he’s currently shooting 50% on floaters this season as well. The only area where he’s actually inefficient is the restricted area. Mainly because that’s not his game and he knows this. That’s where his athletic deficiencies will show up. Challenging rim protectors. early on. He’s been one of my favorite watches this season. Get used to his name, I’m telling you, because he’s going to be in this league and have a long career, and at some point, I guarantee you, he’s going to have some big playoff moments. He just seems like he’s going to be a role player who will step up when it matters most. Let me know your thoughts below. Hopefully, you guys enjoyed

  1. Tbh.. I believe he’s best suited as a sixth-man type role.. rolling with the second unit. Don’t get me wrong, he had an excellent performance last night.. that’s jus me

  2. Reminds me of Brunsons situation in Dallas, he was benched behind Doncic and as soon as he was moved and given the opportunity to lead he shined, give this man the floor and opportunity to lead
