  4. Another fine morning where the Detroit Red Wings are sitting in 1st place in the Atlantic division. In case anyone was unaware. 

  5. So are we the shakiest 1st place team in the NHL? Likely. Are we a fist place team in the NHL? YES

  7. The team is a roller coaster, great game yesterday and amazing OT goal.

    I think for all of the “we need x,y,z” takes, the reality is the answers have to come from inside the room in today’s NHL. So few players make it to free agency now, and so few blockbuster trades happen, that it’s far more reasonable to expect growth from our players and some bad performances not to sustain.

    My stray thoughts:

    – Kasper needs to find his game, he was supposed to fill our largest need and going back to the Compher 2C show is hard
    – Danielson has looked good and even though it’s a bigger lift, trying him at 2C may be our best in house option to just see
    – Finnie continues to impress me, he gets to the front of the net and does what is asked of him, if he plateaus, he can make a middle 6 career
    – Cossa will get a chance based purely on Gibson’s poor play, it feels like the tape is on repeat for acquire a goalie and watch them fail
    – Controversially…if Larkin, Raymond, and Cat have career years at the same time, we’ll make the playoffs regardless of our non-ideal roster construction, people talk a lot about us needing to solve the bottom 6 scoring issues, but I think there is a world where that doesn’t happen and we still make the playoffs

  9. What do you see being the plan for defense after this year? Obviously Ed will get a new contract, but we only have Seider, ASP, and AlJo signed beyond this year. Chiarot extension? JBD back? Hamonic 7-year $14m AAV deal?

  10. We saw *Gladiator* last night for the first time. Holy cow. Awesome movie!

    Meanwhile, Talbot is being very tactful in The Athletic about comeback wins. Hmm… what changed at Christmas last year?

  12. What do you reckon Ryan O’Reilly would cost? One year after this, 0.62 ppg at $4.5m on a heinous Predators team. If Barry could face the reality that they need to blow that experiment up and tank, I think ROR could be a great trade target (granted one of Copp/Compher goes the other way), but obviously 20 other teams would be thinking the same thing

  13. I’m becoming impressed with this team and changing the way I view them. I see them as scrappy, as the Brits would say plucky, and a team on the rise.

    They don’t have the best roster that’s undeniable but they’re finding ways to win and are showing resiliency. Would’ve been easy to go on a losing streak after the 5-0 thumping but…

    Well it looked like that was going to happen and the doomers on here pounced on that but the came back and got the win. A much needed two points.

    Many of us on here know you can’t piss those away at any point of the season as the margins are razor thin come March. And they will go on a losing streak at some point, long season and all.

    Anyway liking this team. They’re slowly becoming mentally stronger and Todd really has done a hell of a job.

  17. I’m an optimist, an Yzerbot, and a long time fan of this team. That being said, are they pretenders this year? Feels like they grind out hard wins and then lay an egg, there’s no way that’s sustainable. I think we’re still a mushy-middle playoff-maybe team. This top of the Atlantic thing feels like just a fluke.
