Nimmo Traded to Rangers for Semien

  1. Tough to see Nimmo go, but the unfortunate reality is that we are not going to win it all with this current core.

  2. I just think of the way Brandon struggled to make any plays look smooth or easy in LF last year, and I can’t be upset about this beyond just the sentimental side of it, which just isn’t good baseball. Sure he hit a few knocks but the dude is gassed.

  3. I’m out on Stearns. I know Nimmo’s back has been an issue, but trading him for a washed Marcus Semien is head scratching. I have a feeling we’ll be back on the GM carousel after this next season if this offseason does not improve.

  4. uhhhh look i get wanting someone gone, i understand the why. i understand the benefit of possibly keeping pete. but this trade objectively sucks. tons of salary coming back our way? guy is 35 and has 3 years left? 26 to 20 mil a year.

the questions on stearns need to be asked now. after his bust of a trade deadline, he seems out of depth and not able to gauge market value properly

  5. How many “vibes” or “he came up in the system” contracts do we need to have on this team?

5 years remaining on Nimmo’s contract and could have locked up that position in LF or DH for a while.

  6. Here’s why I think the Nimmo/Semien trade is decent

Nimmo is declining and now we have better defense at 2nd base. We’re now in play for Bellinger, Tucker or trading for Kwan.

Obviously if Stearns doesn’t upgrade or replaces Nimmo with a scrub it’s a terrible move.

Plus it gives Jett and Benge a better path for playing time when they come up

  7. Good or bad trade aside, kinda excited to not have to hear that “Child of God” walkup song anymore.

  8. Nimmos contract was was way too long and there was no reason to offer him a no-trade. Have to wonder if that tied Stearns’ hands to only deal with teams operating in MAGA-friendly states

  9. Apparently we’re paying 5$ mil also for this deal lmfao

All these what ifs about this nimmo contract like the dude we got in exchange isn’t 35 with 3 years left and also declining since people like to imply nimmo is falling off well Semien sure ain’t winning mvp in 2026

  10. Couldn’t they have at least gotten a starting pitcher who doesn’t do a Chernobyl-like meltdown in the 4th inning?

  11. Not sure if Iike this trade. Semien has been pretty bad offensively the last two years .699 OPS in 24′ 669 OPS in 25.’ Nimmo is not awful in LF just awful arm. Will see what else Mets do.

  12. It hurts because I love Nimmo.

Objectively though, it’s a solid move. We upgrade our 2nd base position and get a gold glove caliber player slotted in there. With Nimmo gone, it opens the door for a Tucker or Bellinger signing – either one is an upgrade over Nimmo IMO, and we can still slot in Benge when he’s ready to start over Taylor in CF, who then becomes a very good 4th outfielder for his defensive capabilities alone.

I don’t want to like it, but I do. Still love you Nimmo!

  13. Damn, Cohen isn’t playing around 🤯

I appreciate Nimmo for always giving his all as a Met though, I actually like this trade. Semien is the better fielder due to Nimmo’s bad foot injury.

  14. I think this is a great move for us. I get that there’s a sentimentality around a homegrown guy like Nimmo, but he didn’t ever particularly inspire a lot of confidence on a game in game out basis.

He had his niche when he first came into the league as an on base guy, but he’s dropped that to try and hit more home runs and now he just feels like an average player in a position and spot in the order that should be a big gun sure fire stud.

I think this also means we’ve got a bunch of moves to make, and that’s exciting

  15. Not unexpected to see Brandon go, but it’s a weird trade. Even if you think Brandon is on the downside, Semien is much more washed than him and not exactly a bargain himself.

  16. One declining player for another, and we get the one with a much, much higher floor. Feels like a good move.

  17. I just peeked into the Rangers sub and they’re viewing this as their own dump and a positive lol. Wonder which fan base is more delusional!

But no seriously I don’t think they know what they’re getting. Nimmo is NOT the same player who received that extension. Not even close.

  18. This makes sense if they’re going to resign Alonso. You need a better glove at 2B if you’re running Alonso/Soto on the right side.

  19. Folks, we can now shop the corner OF market. It’s much more robust than 2B position unless we were gunning for Bichette (we are not).

  20. Good piece of business. Less years of liability and we get a premium defender at 2B who should still provide offense.

Sad to see Nimmo go, as he’s been here a long time, but this is good baseball business and a well balanced trade.

  21. I get the move. Stearns has talked about nothing but run prevention after the season ended and this move will help with that but he’s older than Nimmo. I feel like there’s some risk for sure.

  22. why can’t all the players that I like be really good forever and have perfect contracts and the world could be sunshine and rainbows

  23. I’m good with this. The core of this team has won nothing and holding onto these guys for nostalgic and sentimental value wins nothing. It’s time to change the culture of this organization.

  24. I’m really going to miss Nimmo, the guy and the way he hustled.

That said I like Semien infinitely more as a fit on this roster. 2B/3B/SS really lets us be versatile and getting a RHB in a sea of all lefty free agents is great while shedding some money.

If we did nothing, you can start games with Baty at 3B, and end them with Semien, Lindor, Acuna on the infield. You can platoon Baty/Vientos at DH and not totally be burned by Vientos being a bat-only-guy on the bench because of Semien’s versatility. You also don’t need to lean heavily into McNeil/Acuña to start or contribute, and can utilize them in platoons or as UTIL guys. You can also now trade any of these guys and it really doesn’t impact us. Good first move of the offseason imo. Let’s us cast a wide net looking at free agency and the trade market and creates some opportunities for young guys.
