[Nightengale] The New York Mets are assuming the remaining $72 million left in Marcus Semien’s deal. Brandon Nimmo is owed $101.25 million. Both players represented by agent Scott Boras with each player having to approve the deal.

  1. Wait really? Thought it didn’t have to be the case with Semien since he’s lacks a no-trade clause.

  2. I know I don’t speak for all Mets fans but I see this as a win for us. Semien is elite defensively and our defense specifically in the infield was putrid last season.

It was time to move on from Nimmo. He’s taking up a premier corner outfield spot where we can easily get either a better hitter or fielder than he is. When we gave Nimmo his contract we were expecting a good defensive CF who has a high OBP and now he is none of those things anymore.

  3. Bob with the info no one needed and everyone assumed. What’s the deal with nimmos contract? Are we eating any of it?

  4. I still don’t get this move from the Rangers perspective if their trying to free up money

  5. Scott is like look guys I don’t really give a fuck either way approve it or don’t approve it

  6. I guess this makes a little sense for the Rangers if the Mets are eating salary because they’re very openly trying to trim the payroll, but I don’t know if I can see even Cohen committing to paying Semien until 2028 on top of paying Nimmo and a potential replacement outfielder long term.

  7. This is what I posted on the team subreddit

Stearns is shedding an Eppler contract that aged very badly. When Nimmo signed the deal, the assumption was probably not “Oh boy, I cant wait for him to become unplayable in center in less than 2 seasons!”. But signing Bader and Taylor 2 offseasons ago and Siri last off season was the Mets admitting that Nimmo couldnt play center

Semien is older but is the reigning gold glove 2b in the AL. 3 years of that contract vs 5 years of the Nimmo contract

  8. Boob really not beating the accusations of being a Boras shill by dropping his name when it’s completely irrelevant. They have to approve the deal because they have NTC’s.

  9. It’s kinda weird not seeing Heyman reporting all the Boras stuff first.

Did he and Boras have a falling out?

  10. At least we don’t have to wince with worry about Nimmo’s recurring plantar fasciitis every time he sprints.

  11. sucks to see nimmo go but this trade makes our team better even if semien is dogshit. a outfield spot opens up, dh spot opens up and nimmo was totally gonna be a first baseman imo that spot just opened up too. also im assuming baty, vientos, ronny, acuna and mcneil one or more of those dudes are getting traded.

  12. That’s why unlimited money matters. Cohen can just eat the contract, improve his roster construction, and open up space for Tucker or Bellinger or whoever they want to fill up the spot.

It’s a very nice luxury. See also, taking on more money to get better prospects in return, like the Scherzer/Verlander deals.

  13. I’m just imagining them calling Scott twice.

    *Boras’ phone rings*

Rangers: Hey Scott, we’re trading Semien to the Mets, does Marcus approve?

Boras: Yes. Who’s he being traded for?

    Rangers: Can’t say, bye.

    *Boras’ phone rings*

Mets: Hey Scott, we’re trading Nimmo to the Rangers, does Brandon approve?

Boras: Yes…..let me guess, it’s to the Rangers for Semien?

    Mets: How did you know!?

    Boras: I know everything.

  14. This means neither team is paying money on the other contract right? It really is kinda wild the Mets offloaded that Nimmo deal we were all saying was a bad contract. Not for what we expected, but Siemien at 2B provides elite defense and his declining bat won’t be as big an issue. His WAR is higher than Nimmo’s as well.

Maybe New York will be a nice change of scenery. Texas sucks these days.
