Today is November 24th.

On this date in 2005, the Mets traded Grant Psomas, Mike Jacobs and Yusmeiro Petit to the Florida Marlins for first baseman Carlos Delgado. For you kids out there, Delgado was a lefty first baseman who spent four years for the Mets from 2006 to 2009, hitting 104 homers and had 339 RBI. Yusmeiro Petit made his MLB debut for the Marlins and pitched until 2021 and retired after spending 2022 with AAA El Paso. Mike Jacobs played three years for the Marlins as a below replacement level player. He came back to the Mets in 2010 and last played in the majors with Arizona in 2012. Grant Psomas was a hitter who never made it to the majors, topping out at AAA Albuquerque in 2008.

  1. Any time Mike Jacobs comes up, I feel obligated to remind the Marlins that he isn’t Jewish.

  2. The more I think about it, the more I like the trade. It’s easier to fill a hole at LF than 2B, and even if we don’t fill that hole with a big name free agent or trade, Benge/Taylor/Soto wouldn’t be a bad outfield next season.

  3. Sentimentally it’s hard to see a guy like Nimmo traded but it definitely opens up a lot more interesting possibilities. Signing Pete would seem to make a lot more sense now that you don’t need to worry about Nimmo clogging the DH spot in the medium term

  4. probably the right move, financially, but jeez that one stings. will sting for a while. huge fan favorite gone overnight. cost of business i guess …. (who’s excited for $45 parking and $22 beers…)

  5. The Mets now need an outfielder and they need offense. **They don’t have to be the same person.** Bring in a *competent* outfielder and sign Alonso. The upgraded infield makes it easier to carry Alonso’s defense. And tangentially, I can’t see the Mets selling this team to fans if *everyone* is gone. Pete has become the bone to throw to us.

  6. Are we seriously downvoting people who dislike trading Brandon Nimmo for Marcus Semien lmao

  7. Are there others out there that like this trade? The core Mets of the past several years ain’t won squat, so let’s move on. And we cut our losses in a smart way.

  8. Last nights trade open up a lot of possibilities, I’m excited to see where the Mets go with it.

Only two outfielders locked into a spot for 2026 imo, Soto and Taylor, and believe they’ll go into the season with Taylor as the 4th OF. They should be in on Tucker and Bellinger for LF and Benge should have a shot at CF.

Excluding 1B, you have Vientos, Baty, Maurcio, Lindor, Semien, McNeil, and Acuna for 3B, SS, and 2B. Mix that with the prospects and you have a path to pull off a trade to acquire some good starting pitching.

  9. I gotta say I’m convinced that a lot of Mets fans get off on being miserable and wishing for the team to fail. Quite tiring

  10. Ok every year for the past four years I have clowned on the Phillies and my friends who are fans for running out the same core with no meaningful changes in hopes of doing better.

I know offense wasn’t entirely our problem last year, but defense was. Re tooling is good. Hopefully getting younger in the outfield is good.

But, emotions of baseball. I’ll miss Nimmo.

  11. Bill Madden spending his evening obnoxiously shooting down Mets fans who think an OF upgrade is coming is funny but sad all the same. Has he nothing better to do? Isn’t he too old for trolling? I’ll give him a small bit of credit for coming out of nowhere to be the first guy to report on Cohen’s final Soto push 30ish minutes before it was announced but I don’t see why a Yankee shill would think he has any other insight into the Mets thinking. Claiming matter of factly that Steve Cohen is not big game hunting until the next CBA sure is something when he’s shown zero qualms ever about spending when it makes sense or is needed. If the team doesn’t acquire a big OF bat it’s not because of Cohen being unwilling, it’s because Stearns didn’t recommend it. And I cannot imagine Stearns looking at the state of the OF and thinking we don’t need to do anything there. Benge is earmarked to take over CF early in the season, still need a LF.

I do support him clowning Michael Marino at least.

  12. the nimmo move feels like when you don’t know where to start on a puzzle, or cleaning a garage that became a diaster. you clear out that one section or make that one move that gives you breathing room, starts the ball rolling and just makes everything seem much easier.

  13. I think as always this first offseason move is suffering from being judged in a vacuum when you won’t really have a proper idea of what Stearns plans are for months. It’s not even Thanksgiving yet.

  14. I was content for this to be a slow start to the hot stove, and then boom, the Nimmo trade happens. Now I want more moves, and I want them now. And even though I know most journalists don’t always have a ton of insight, I’m really anxious to see some “what’s next for the Mets” articles, just to give me something to think about.

I’m not expecting Tucker or even Bellinger (I don’t think the Mets get into a bidding war for him, especially after they just got out from under the Nimmo contract), but I wonder if some rumored to be available LFers like Donovan or Kwan are options. We’ve already seen them linked to Donovan by Jon Morosi, though I don’t put a lot of stock in his reporting.

  15. i just hope rangers fans will appreciate how beautiful nimmo’s arms look in a tank top

  16. You know I slept on it and actually I think I like the Nimmo trade even more than I did yesterday

Looking forward to the McNeil trade/DFA news

  17. People are sleeping on how good our infield defense can be.

    3b – Baty – 69th percentile OAA

    SS – Lindor – 90th percentile OAA

    2b – Semien – 92nd percentile OAA

First base is obviously a question mark but even still, 80% of ground balls are going to be fielded by really good defenders.

I hope we double down and grab Framber Valdez since he has one of the highest ground ball rates in the league.
