Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin, Jason Robertson & Gulutzan Respond to Mikko Rantanen BOARDING on Romanov
[Applause] caliber. You jump right in. Uh it felt good to be back out there. Um just getting some timing back. um you know, first game in a little bit. So, um unfortunate that uh the outcome wasn’t better, but um you know, good to be back. You never want to be watching from the press box, but what did you see that you liked about your team while you were out start? Um you know, a lot of compete. Um, you know, I thought the guys played um, you know, great while I was uh, watching and um, you know, a lot of uh, players have stepped up and um, I’ve had a lot of injuries this year unfortunately and um, you guys have been playing uh, some great hockey. Do you talk with Glenn at all? You got moved up pretty quick as far as line assignment goes. It just seems like he had a lot of confidence in your play. Um yeah, it’s just one of those things that that you know kind of happens in a game. Um I think you’ve seen it quite a bit this year. A lot of line shuffling. Um you know, guys don’t um end the game the way it started and um that’s just uh kind of how he rolls. It looked like you guys had tied it there at the end. What did you make of that goal to interfere? Uh kind of thought Robo got pushed in, but um nothing we can do about it. It was Toronto’s call, I guess, and um they thought it was goalie interference. Tempers flaring a little bit there, too, after the the rand interference or the rand call at the end. What What did you make on just on the bench in terms of trying to keep things keep things focused in those last little bit? Um I mean guys are um you know got a little emotional out there and it’s hockey whatever. Um moved on pretty quick. Every game here was exciting. It just seems like you guys pushed to the end. Yeah. Uh almost a game we kind of expected I guess or or we talked about you know based on their uh habits. you know, they’re a team that can score off the rush or uh they’re big and heavy and you got to stay patient, just kind of grind it out and um we did a good job. Um a lot of good things and um you know, wish we stole one or two. It looked like you guys had tied it there at the end. What did you make of that goalie interference ball? Yeah, I don’t know. Quick play. I feel like RSI’s going to say Robo got pushed. Side’s going to say Robo landing the goalie. Um kind of is what it is in a 82 game series season. Uh what have you seen from Robo? Obviously, he’s been on a streak. You uh you had some chemistry with him tonight, too? Yeah, just kind of give him the puck. Um you know, he’s uh he’s shooting everything and a lot’s going in. So, um you kind of expected it to come, uh you know, happy to see it. When you have a game, it’s almost no penalties and then in the last 10 minutes it’s all penalties. How hard is it to adjust because there were you had to shorten a goal and Yeah. Um, I kind of liked the game cuz I feel like, you know, we haven’t had a lot of long five on five games. You know, we’ve, uh, really relied on our power play, um, and goalending and we need to keep improving on the five on five. So, um, you know, positive things and things to look at. And then how about Jamie coming back? How what was the feeling? Incredible. Um, you know, he looked like he didn’t miss a beat out there. You know, he was flying around the first and, you know, hitting guys and, uh, you know, so nice to have him back in the locker room. He’s probably not going to talk about it, but what’s it like to watch him try and recover from a collapsed along? It just seems like a really hard thing to come back from. For sure. Um, you know, and just seeing what you guys don’t see, right? I mean, that’s what makes him who he is and how hard he works uh on the ice, but especially off the ice. And, um, you know, like I said, so happy to see him back. What’s the mood on the bench at the end of the game there? Obviously, tempers are getting a little hot. How What’s the mood of the bench for you guys? Fired up. Everyone kind of yelling, barking, both sides. Um, great hockey game obviously. I thought, you know, great compet both sides. Um, so yeah. Um, probably be a good one when we go there as well. Uh, no, not yet. I think, uh, I’ll probably see it later. When you guys do that, I know it’s not exactly the way you want to finish it, but it just seems like that’s who you are. You guys are going to gut it out till the end, even after five minute major and everything like that. Yeah, I mean, I don’t think I’ve been in a scenario like that before. Um certainly I mean 25 seconds left. I mean five minute major. I mean you I don’t know. It was a good push. I mean we got a chance. Didn’t didn’t go in. Um tempers were obviously flaring after the penalty on Mo there. What what’s the feeling on the bench for you guys going back and forth? You see Patrick yelling things? Yeah. Well obviously our first thought is the health of the player. Um, of course that’s the number one priority. Um, you never want to see that happen. Um, and and we understand it. I mean, you know, it was an incident. Um, you know, they’re sticking up for their guy. You know, we we respect that. We have to respect that. Um, yeah, it’s just unfortunate it happened. What do you What did you get with Jamie coming back as far as just seeing on the bench? Seems like that was a lot of emotion and energy. Yeah, I mean it, you know, we definitely he’s our he’s our he’s our leader. I mean, he’s been that way for as long as I’ve been here. So, whenever you have that injected in your lineup, um it’s certainly an advantage for us. Um very vocal, uh very involved. Um you know, he’s going to get back up to game speed. You know, it’s, you know, it’s hard coming leave, you know, it’s hard whatever, 19 games off and you come in the fire. Um I thought he played very I thought he played well. Yeah, Glenn moved him up the lineup pretty quickly. That was a great time. Yeah, but you you kind of expect that, you know, he’s been around long enough where he, you know, maybe physically he’s not there, but mentally sharp um you know, physically not there yet, but phys mentally sharp. So, um yeah, he’s going to build off it and um I know he’s probably um excited for the next game. Guessing to start out, how did you see the the disallowed goal? Um yeah, I mean obviously I have a different take on it, but um anytime there’s a player in the blue, um you’re going to argue was he pushed in or did he go in on his own? And um you know, obviously you know where we’d stand on that. So uh I thought we had a good chance because uh the goal it was a was a it was a call on the ice. It was a good goal. And um we can sit here and argue all day whether uh uh contact was made before he got into the blue or when he got into the blue, but um it’s not going to do us any good. After the Mo hit, looked like Patrick was yelling over at you guys. Lane’s kind of getting back. Rantin’s in the middle of it. What was all going on over I actually didn’t know what he was yelling at and I’m sure it was Rants, but uh I was actually down at the other end. We were trying to decide on the power play on on the PK. We were blowing our D to to get our guys off the ice. If you could see the last little play, um we’re we’re shooting the puck basically down the ice to get another guy out there. So, um obviously one of his players is hurt and he’s he’s he’s yelling at somebody. Uh the game was mostly no penalties at all, then a lot of penalties. How hard is that to adjust? And did you think you guys as far as a power play and short-handed goal and everything like that? Was Yeah, the shorty hurt us. Um, you know, uh, we get a four-minute and we take a penalty on it and we give up a shorty. That’s not a good recipe, right? So, um, that was our chance to kind of get back in. You know, you can see how tighting it was. I thought we had the better of the two teams in chances up until that point. you know, one bounces in front of Otter, you know, off the off the bend wall there and comes out a little funny and they tap, they get a tap in. So, um, but I thought that we had some good looks. Now, you wish you had that four minute back so that you could uh uh maybe get one. There was a turnover by Rantin um that caused a breakaway the other way and Capo Biano got back and was able to cut that off and then Petravic had a similar one throughout the game. What did you make of kind of those guys stepping up on the back end? Well, I I thought our back end uh Coley, Kappell, uh Pro all played, uh solid games. I mean, really solid games. I mean, um if uh we could have generated a little bit more, I thought, um offensively, but defensively, I thought they were sound. We were never in any defensive uh uh trouble other than maybe a uh two shifts there in the second. So, I thought they played good. What’ you see from Jamie? Yeah, about, you know, almost close to 10 minutes was probably where he needs to be after a couple months. And, uh, but, you know, I can still see there’s some polish there. And, uh, you know, he had a a good look in the first with with with Rance and and, uh, and Johnny there. Um, yeah, I just think I thought it was a good first game for him to to be back. He was physical. You can still see that. He adds that element for us. gives us size in puck play along the wall. Um, and we’ll build them up as we go here. What did you see from him that you wanted to move him into those situations because he, you know, he clearly looked like he was fine in Yeah. Well, it was it was just see how he was skating initially and he was skating good and being physical and then the first time I did put him there, he he gets a great a chance. So, um, you know, Benny’s got hockey IQ. So, if he’s skating well and his hands are, you know, still as good as ever, you’re going to be able to put him places. So I I saw it early and I saw him get a chance early. So then, you know, I spotted him in there. How about the lift from the group? Did you feel a little bit of a lift from them when Jamie came back? Uh yeah. Yeah. Um to to be honest with you, you know, the guys are waiting for him to come back and it’s it’s good for our our group and um and it’s just, you know, give credit to the Islanders. I mean, they’re very stingy team, right? And they they played good. So um but he he’s certainly an asset for our for our group moving forward. What did you make of that that play with with Bo and Roman up there? Just forunate or Yeah. Yeah. I I think I I have a different take on everybody’s going to have their own take, but you know, if you watch the play, um I think it’s Mayfield, the defenseman actually holds up Rance and they actually clip skates. So, Rance is off balance going in there, too. And um I don’t know if you played the game and you’re off balance heading in, you usually put your hands out. And uh you know, I’ve seen Rance play enough over the last 10 years that uh uh it’s just one of those hockey plays that happen. I hope I hope uh Romanoff is is is okay. Looks like he went in flat, but I’m just hoping he’s okay. But yeah, well, you know, uh Rance clip skates uh being held up there, so it’s it’s a dangerous play for everybody. Not the result you guys wanted, but there was a big push in the last few minutes. Is that something positive you can take? Yeah. Yeah, they you know that that’s us, right? We they’re still pushing right to the end. And if you listen to the bench, if you had a microphone there, they’re still pushing. There’s time. There’s time. And um you know, we’re we’re never out of it. And um uh you know, just wish the last one would have counted would have made for a good movie. Having played a lot of six on five this season. What do you think of the six on five game? Yeah, I thought I thought we were dangerous. That’s something we’ve worked on and uh we brought into training camp here is just kind of our six on five play and what we’re looking for and and you can see we generated some chances. I mean the the one pass from Segi to Robo I mean they make a heck of a save otherwise we’re we’re not even going to a challenge. We’re probably in overtime. So um I I thought we generated some some real good chances. I mean it’s never a good recipe when you need two but we got one right. So um we but we are working on that. We do have a plan there. Yep. Thank you. [Music]

Rantanen's and Robertson's penalties were both caused by the Islanders pushing them into their own players, simply put.
The high stick they called on Benn was also a great acting job.
Did you see is eyes he looking toward the soil and aiso on the side very strange way to answer the question?
Nothing Mikko could do after being tripped like that. It looked so scary though!! What a freak accident
Just goes to show, Toronto loves their East teams.
What F-ing video are you watching? – If Mayfield hooked him, it should have slowed him down, and Mikko extends his arms on the push. Odds are it was a retaliation move for a hard check on Mikko at some point.
Jesus big D has some really whiny bit@hes. Blind too.
As a Stars fan, yes, Mikko was tripped, Robo was pushed BUT! we NEED to stop with these shorthanded goals. On a double minor and we give 1 up. Playing feom behind constantly in the 3rd
I think the refs gave the Islanders that interference at the end because of the Rant hit. Stars player was clearly pushed into the goalie!!!
