The Story Behind the Anthem | Chicago Blackhawks
January 19th, 1991. This is the anthem, a golden moment by the Chicago Blackhawks, presented by Bud Light. When Chicago hosted the 1991 All-Star game, America had just gone to war. Some said the NHL should cancel the event. Others believed sports would be the one thing that kept us together. Wayne Mesmer had sung the anthem before at the old barn on West Madison, but this time was different. As he began to belt the words, a thunderous, defiant roar flooded the stadium. Every word of the star spangled banner carried by 20,000 voices, rattling the steel beams of Chicago Stadium. In that moment, the game itself became secondary. The cheers weren’t for a team. They were for a country. For the people risking everything oceans away, the 1991 NHL All-Star game ended in an 11 to5 score. But no one talks about the goals. They talk about how for 2 minutes and 27 seconds, Chicago became the loudest, proudest place in the world. A golden moment by the Chicago Blackhawks. Presented by Bud Light.
Discover the story behind the Blackhawks iconic Anthem and the deafening roar that started at the old Madhouse on Madison. This first episode of Golden Moments, presented by @budlight, traces how a spontaneous reaction became a defining game-night tradition.
