The Spurs rank 29th in opponent 3PT% (39.4%). This isn’t just tough shot-making, teams are getting clean looks all game. San Antonio needs better defensive wings!

  1. It’s not really a wing defender issue, Castle and Harper who are the main two poa defenders barely get beat off the dribble. I think one of the defensive coaches has created a scheme where an “unexpected double” comes in the paint where an unconventional player is meant to help and everyone rotates. We aren’t rotating properly and in the first place it’s suspicious if the help is even needed considering we have wemby. It’s either that or keldon vassell and champagnie are just going rogue every possession for some reason

  2. They’re 21st in wide open opponent 3PA, they’re closer to 15th than they are to the bottom-5. This is honestly just terrible shooting luck.

  3. “Getting clean looks all game”

    Avg opp. Wide-Open 3PA: 19.6; Spurs: 20.8

    Avg opp. Open 3PA: 15.5; Spurs: 12.3

Avg opp. Tightly defended 3PA: 3.2; Spurs: 3.5

  4. It’s been our story for the last few years highlight with Vic’s rookie year. I’m not mistaken in his rookie year we gave up the most 3s in the league. Without castle as our best POA defender it’s going to be worse because we have a poor habit of overhelping and then forgetting to box out because we are a bit small which affects our rebounding.

It’s this chain of poor individual defense which leads to overhelping, which leads to falling to box out rebounding, or poor rotations which leads to 2nd chance shots or open 3s.

It starts with communication on switches, especially, better backside rotation off ball, and just paying attention to the weak side corner shooter because for some reason we tend to lose that guy at least 3x a game.

  5. it isn’t really that they aren’t good individual defenders, it’s that they (still) constantly help one pass away

  6. Often there’s help or late rotation and several times a game there’s confusion about who is going to who and so the defender arrives just in time for an easy three in their face.

  7. Why does this sub fish around and try to find every negative stat they possibly can for a winning team? I’m sure someone will go it’s just info bro but half of the post are just negative about a team that has a pretty good record. This team will win the NBA title and they’ll be post going yeah but it took us six games and we should have won it in four I can already see that in the playoffs.

  8. Mostly we need guards to stop cheating towards the paint to “help” Wemby and Kornet. Those two don’t need help from 6’5″ guards threatening a double team.

  9. We didn’t lose to the Suns because of defense. Their 111 is less than our opponents average all season. We scored 102 because nobody could shoot last night. Just open looks brick after brick.
