NHL Trade Rumours – Leafs & Sabres Trade? NYR & Canes Trade? Kyrou to Sens? Canucks, Oilers, 3 Stars

We have lots to discuss here in today’s video, including all kinds of NHL trade rumors. One, we’re going to take a look at possibility of a trade between the Leafs and the Sabres, and another one that could be, you know, something that might be possible between the Hurricanes and the Rangers about a couple of young players who could benefit possibly from a fresh start. We’ll see uh what some NHL analysts had to say about that. Plus, we have some trade talk as well around the Ottawa Senators, the St. Louis Blues, the Vancouver Conucks, and also some chatter around what’s wrong with the Edmonton Oilers and is there a locker room issue there? could be having an impact on things. We have a couple of signings today, the three stars of the week, news from the waiverwire, and a bunch of injuries to update on as well. Coming up next, so welcome back to another video here at TopShelf Hockey. As I mentioned, we have lots to talk about here in today’s video. All kinds of NHL trade talk and rumors and lots of uh other news around the NHL, including some signings and injury updates. We’ll start first with a quick update from the NHL waiverwire. Uh yesterday we had the Buffalo Sabres put in goalender Alex Gorgv on waiverss for the purpose of contract termination. That of course is now fully completed. Nobody picked him up. No big surprise. He was on a one-year deal at league minimum. Uh so the contract’s now been terminated. He’s officially an unrestricted free agent and the belief is he’s going to be heading back to sign with a team in the KHL. So it looks like his run in the NHL is likely coming to an end. It’s kind of hard to imagine in the sense that just a few years back wasn’t was it 2024? four I think it was he was an all-star with the Avalanche. So, um boy have things changed in a hurry for Gorgi. I mean obviously last year he kind of ran out of runway with the Avalanche and just never really landed back on his feet again after that. I mean obviously had some other opportunities but just hasn’t uh instilled any confidence in other teams to give him more of an opportunity. So we’ll see. I’m not sure if that’s the end of the road completely in the NHL or if he’ll be back someday, but for now he’s off to Russia. Uh the three stars of the week as announced every Monday by the NHL. First star this week is Flames defenseman Rasmus Anderson who had a big week appearing in four different games putting up two goals and seven assists. So a great week for him. Uh the second star of the week, another defenseman and Zach Warren of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Also appearing in four games last week putting up three goals and five assists for eight points. In the third star of the week is youngster Mlin Celbrini who continues to be one of the league’s most productive players. Uh still up near the top of the league in scoring. put up another four goals and three assists last week over four more games. So, Celibbrini to me is pretty close to being a lock for the Canadian Olympic team, he is really uh taken his game to a whole other level in year two of his NHL career. Uh and he’s just really like there’s no stopping him. He’s not only taken this game to a new level and to get on the radar for the Olympic team like you know when you’re consistently this stage of the season you know top five in scoring it’s pretty impressive especially with the company he’s keeping based on a lot of his numbers here couple of signings today one is a veteran getting a new opportunity one’s a prospect the veteran is uh Brendan Smith resigns uh with the team he played with before Columbus Blue Jackets have resigned veteran defenseman Brendan Smith on a one-year two-way contract uh for the remainder of this season So obviously he’ll get a league minimum at the NHL level. Uh a little bit more of a lucrative AHL salary as well for anytime he has to spend down there, but obviously the Blue Jackets at this point looking for some extra depth. Uh Brendan Smith been around long enough that um he should be able to jump into their lineup here. I would assume it’s going to be a little bit where he hasn’t gone through a proper training camp or anything. So we’ll see um how quickly he gets into games with Columbus, but I would think it’s going to be a little bit. you think he wants some practices and some reps to make sure he’s in game shape and all that where he’s been out of the NHL so far this year. Uh the Pittsburgh Penguins have also signed a big prospect and a 6’6 defenseman Peyton Kettles who gets his three-year ELC. Uh he was just a recent draft in the 2025 draft class, 39th overall. So a big strong 6’6 defenseman getting his ELC on the books. A bunch of injury updates and notes for rosters and the lineups around the league tonight. Uh the Blue Jackets of course like I said not only signed Brennan Smith but we also found out today that Marchenko Carell Marenko one of their top players is going to be out tonight against the Washington Capitals. He’s going to miss a little bit of time due to an upper body injury. The Lightning are going to be without Braden Point and Eric Turnack. Uh so they’re going to be out. Cooerov appears to be fine to go in tonight’s game. Uh the Senators are going to be without Thomas Shabbat. Of course, he just returned in the last game against the San Jose Sharks in which they uh held a 3-2 win to win their second consecutive game to start this seven-game road trip. Tonight, they’re in Los Angeles or the Amazon Prime game here uh in Canada on on the Amazon Monday Night Hockey. Uh but Shabbat will not be in the lineup against LA. Looks like he reagravated whatever the they didn’t really disclose exactly what the injury was. It’s either a hand or wrist or something in in that part of his body. Um it was a harmless thing. There was no contact or anything. He just went to take a shot. Uh, and as he like rolled his wrist to make a wrist shot, it something didn’t feel good and he didn’t get off a shot with much power. Went off to the bench and he never came back. It was already I can’t remember exactly when that was in the game. I want to say it was halfway through the third period or so. So, it was getting late enough that they just ran with 5D the remainder of the way. Uh, so we’ll see. Nick, Matt and Powell will return to the lineup tonight in Shabbat’s absence. In New Jersey tonight, they have Cody Glass activated back in the lineup. Forward Scott Leance was returned to the American Hockey League. Uh the Vancouver Conucks returned goalender Yuri Peter to the American Hawk League and brought up the other goalie Nikita Tolapilo. Uh the Sharks have recalled Vincent Aorio from his AHL conditioning stint. Uh while he was down there, he played in six AHL games, put up seven assists and was plus seven. So I’d say that’s a pretty solid overall performance and uh should be able to get into some NHL games here very shortly. In Toronto, they don’t play for a couple of days here until Wednesday. But uh it sounds like updates from Craig Ruby indicate that Austin Matthews, Matthew Ny, and Nick Wah are getting close to returning. They’ve been pretty vague. Of course, we know with the injuries in Toronto, it’s I know a lot of outlets are indicating that there’s a lot of uh external and to some degree internal frustration around the information that’s given out on injuries. A lot of fans have no idea when to expect players back or what’s going on. Just a lot of secrecy. Um which I understand to some degree. they don’t want, you know, other teams or players targeting any injuries or anything like that. I get it. But you could be a little bit more accurate at least on the timeline, even if you don’t say what it is to give a timeline. I mean, I know sometimes some things can be tricky to do, but they they just seem to be probably one of the most secretive teams in the NHL. And I just see a lot of people complaining about it on social media lately, but those three players for the Leafs, N Matthews, and Wah apparently are close according to Bubie. Whether or not they appear in their next game Wednesday, difficult to say. He says he should have a better idea tomorrow. Uh Brandon Carlo has not skated since he’s been out, so he’s going to be a little bit longer. Anthony Stolar still has not skated as well. Uh he is now considered a ways away according to Craig Ruby. It went from being not too serious to worse than we thought to more time going by. He has not skated still a ways away. We don’t really know um really what he’s dealing with. So they’re going to have to continue to run with wall and hilly uh for at least a little bit longer for sure. Jake McCabe, who did leave the previous contest on Saturday night against the Habs, uh left the game due to injury, is okay and should be able to play on Wednesday as well. Now, on the rumor front, before we get into a lot of the trade stuff, a lot of people have been talking about what’s wrong with the Oilers. Now, they had a better game here, the last couple of games actually, to be honest, and and Florida a little bit better. Uh they picked up an overtime loss, which is, you know, it’s not great to lose, but at least you get a point out of it. Then they went in, played the Panthers, and they beat them. uh which I’m sure that they enjoyed considering they’ve lost them back toback Stanley Cup finals to the Panthers. Although the Panthers are greatly short-handed with two of their star players. So, I mean, a win’s a win. I guess you take your victories when you can get them, but I don’t know it’s quite the same when you don’t have a full lineup uh on that side of things. But, at the end of the day, the Oilers have not had a great start to the season. Um really at this point, I think if the playoffs started today, the only Canadian team that’s in a playoff spot, I believe, was Ottawa. Uh, now I I do believe other teams like I know Montreal is in a decent spot. They should have a good odds of getting in. Uh, but Toronto, Edmonton, of course, the two teams that have been looked upon the last few years as being more of a powerhouse or more of a cup contender, um, are not in good spots at all. Uh, and in Edmonton, I know former Oilers defenseman and of course well-known podcaster Ryan Whitney from Spit and Chicklets has on this her latest or on their latest episode was talking about the Oilers and what’s maybe going wrong and and he honestly is concerned and wonders if there’s some sort of locker room issue or if the uh the goalending and the inconsistent play they’re getting out of their goalenders has really kind of draining the room and kind of leaking into the psyche of the rest of the team onto the bench like you There are teams like we’ve seen them before when there’s a consistent issue that’s not uh that keeps happening to hurt a team eventually like you know they give up a a goal if the you know then all of the sudden the team sags or they don’t respond well like you know just looking at the way the Oilers have played uh cuz it’s been better the last couple of games so hopefully things are on the upswing with them but you know in all honesty he can Whitney I think has some good points cuz he points back to a couple weeks ago and I talked about this at the time too cuz it made me a lot of really concerned. Uh in a postgame interview, uh head coach Crystal Block was asked point blank, do you think the players and the the team on the bench has lost confidence in his goalenders? And he had a really long pause. I think it was like 11 or 12 seconds. And he’s like, “Uh, I don’t think so.” Like that did not instill any confidence in me whatsoever that the answer really is like, you know, no. like they they believe in them wholeheartedly. Like no, I I don’t think they do. And from what I my take on it, I honestly I’ve seen the olders play quite a bit this year and it just seems like if they give up a couple of early goals, I I think the frustration and the, you know, everything kind of sets in and they just they seem to lose their mojo and they sag. They don’t have that and when you’re constantly playing from behind, it’s exhausting. It’s mentally and physically exhausting. So, you know, in all honesty, I do wonder if that they’d need to make a move of some sort. I mean, I know they picked up Connor Ingram hoping they could turn to him if they needed to. The problem is though, if you look around the league, there’s a few goalies that might be available, but there’s just not a lot of real clearcut, easy to acquire solutions. Like, nobody’s going to throw you a bone and help you out, you know, uh, and just give you a solid goalender. It’s not going to be that simple. And what assets are you going to have to part with to make it happen? You know, you could look around the league like maybe you get pride guy like Jordan Bennington out of St. Louis. Maybe he needs a fresh start after not having a good start to the year, you know, but what is Doug Armstrong going to want for him? He’s got a Stanley Cup on his resume. Yeah, he’s having a down season, but he’s got a good resume. Uh what they what’s the asking price going to be? And does do the Oilers have anything close to uh to help to to meet the need to uh to make that happen? And what are they going to hell lose if they do? Like not easy. You know, there was some talk about maybe Detroit’s got a few, you know, goalenders. Could they turn to try to get like a Talbot? I mean, Detroit’s probably not going to want to move anybody when they’re sitting in a playoff spot. So, that’s probably not going to be an option. Like, some people thought Talbot might be made available because of uh Gibson acquisition and he’s got more term on his contract, but not really sure about that right now. Like, why, you know, really, why would you? And then of course we’ve heard about Montreal lately um with Montbo kind of being inconsistent this year. You know could they make a move and there was some chatter about the Habs maybe striking in a goalending move and maybe moving Montebo separately. So like you know there’s lots of potential but I was like I just don’t know what it’s going to cost. I just don’t think there’s an easy solution and easy fix. A lot of NHL analysts seem to think that the Oilers are going to have to ride this season with what they have in goal and deal with it in the offseason. But we will see. But I think uh Whitney might be on to something that some of the inconsistent play is impacting other players and I think frustration is starting to set in. Uh so hopefully they can get that ironed out and that it doesn’t become a toxic locker room cuz that can be a super difficult thing to overcome. Now on the trade front, a bunch of different things we want to look at. One, Vancouver, of course, we know the Conucks are not in a great spot either. Another Canadian team struggling this year. I mean, Calgary’s near the bottom of the standings. Vancouver’s not doing great. Edmonton’s not doing great. The Jets have taken a step back so far this year and now they’re without their visitor winning goalender Hellbach for up to six weeks. So I mean they’re down compared to where they’ve been this point in the year the last couple of seasons as well. Montreal had a hot start, then they kind of cooled off and now they’re they’re still very much in the mix for playoffs, but you know, as of right now, uh a little bit of, you know, overcoming to do, you know, and then the Leafs aren’t having a great season and Ottawa’s not doing amazing, but they’re doing pretty good and they are in a number three spot on the Atlantic division. So, like the Canadian teams are not off to a fantastic start. in Vancouver. Uh Patrick Johnson of the province was reporting that uh league sources have vindicated to him that the Canucks have considered and have had conversations around a league to move Connor Garland. Now again, I think we’re going to possibly see more moves out of Vancouver. To be honest, lately you’ve seen stronger play out of a guy like Patterson. I do wonder if they’ll reconsider that. I mean, I know um moving his contract is going to be very very tough given um his play the last couple of years and the contract and everything that goes with it, but you got to wonder at some point here like if they think they need to trade Quinn Hughes because he’s not going to resign if it gets like once they I honestly think that they do. In my opinion, I have a gut feeling that when you listen to Quinn, I I don’t have a high confidence level that he’s going to stick around and if you have to move Quinn, then you have to basically you might as well tear it down. Um, at least that’s what a lot of people think. So, we’ll see. I mean, they made a lot of resignings this off seasonason. They brought a lot of guys back, whether it be Garland, Besser, um, you know, Demco, all these guys. And so far, it’s not working out. But Garland is a name that’s out there according to PJ. And I wonder about the Bruins. I mean, and Boston would be like a homecoming for him. Uh, they’re a team that’s had a decent start to the year. They’re not at the bottom of the division like they were last year by the end of the season, but they’re also a team to me that could definitely use some more skill up front. They have a lot of checking guys, heavy guys, hard to play against guys. They don’t have probably enough skill that they want and I don’t know that the asking price on a guy like Garland would be huge. I think he could fit there. So, well, that’s just my opinion. He hasn’t been linked to them, but um that’s one opinion. Uh Dave Pegnota made an appearance today on the coming in hot podcast which covers the Ottawa Senators hosted by Brent Wallace and Jason York and Graham Nichols. Uh they had Pangota on talking about a variety of things including any rumors he’s heard around the sends cuz we’ve heard from a few insiders including Elliot Friedman, Pangnota and a few others that the Suns and GM Steve Stos have definitely been having lots of conversations and that uh he would definitely like to add to this group. They’re happy with the way the season has started. Uh especially without captain Brady Kachchuck being in the lineup for most of those games. Uh of course he was in the third game of the year when he got hurt. Uh so you know he’s missed a substantial period of time. He is expected as well to return uh on this road trip that they’re on right now likely around uh later this week against the Blues and a hometown coming for him back to St. Louis is likely. They get to LA tonight then they play Vegas in a couple days and they’re in St. Louis I think on Friday or Thursday. Uh that’s what he is targeting apparently for a return right now. And you know St is looking to at a couple options here. You know, they we’ve had the injuries on the blue line, so they went out and got Dennis Gilbert uh to add to the left-handed depth, but Pota mentions two names that they’ve been linked to. And one is Boon Jenner of the Blue Jackets, and one is Jordan Kyu of the Blues. He’s heard that the Senators have poked around on both players. Now, very different scenarios. Boon Jenner, the captain of the Blue Jackets, is a player that um I think will get a lot of interest if he’s not signed. But I mean, the Blue Jackets last year, they had a lot of interest in in this player from other teams looking to acquire him and they resisted and they made it pretty clear that they did not want to trade him and that when he was eligible, they had every intention of extending him. you know, they like the way he plays. Good middle six forward, good leader, good, you know, brings a little bit of combination of grit and ability to produce some points. Um, so a lot of teams would like a guy like him for especially for like a third line type of role, you know, uh, to add to your depth and your checking and a little bit of scoring and just everything that comes with the package that Jenner brings. Well, so far nothing has materialized on a contract extension and yes, we’re a little ways of the deadline, but that’s why his name is back out there. And according to peg not the sends have kicked tires here and kind of poked around on Jenner more as a complimentary piece to add to this group. But they’ve also chat out the St. Louis Blues and kind of kicked around on Jordan Kyu as a potential bigger acquisition. Some people believe that Sens would like to add if they can find a deal that makes sense a pretty solid top six winger. Uh, ideally, you know, they have a couple of options. Either somebody who can play with Stouta or somebody who can play with either Cousins or Pinto, but the Shane Pinto line with Michael Amadio and Klo Jaru is one of the best defensive lines in hockey and they’re producing pretty well offensively. I don’t think they really want to mess with that. With Brady Kachchuck being out, we’ve seen a reunion of Stutzel with Drake Bath and they’ve been having unreal chemistry and both producing at a high clip here. They have had played together a fair bit at times in previous years, but over the last probably year, especially since the Dylan Cousins acquisition, Bath has primarily played on the Cousins line. Uh, and then of course Brady and Timmy have primarily played together. And then you’ve had other guys kind of on either line, whether it be Zetterland or David Pra or uh, you know, other options at times to kind of fill in there. But they could have room for sure on another top six scoring winger. And Kyru brings a lot of speed. Uh, so he could be a complimentary piece for either of those two lines. Uh, I don’t, like I said, don’t know what it would take to get him. Obviously, he would have a say as well because he does have a no move clause that kicked in in July. I don’t know how he would feel about it, but obviously interesting to find out that they are kind of kicking around on both those ideas. Now, Frank Sar Valley also talking about the Buffalo Sabres today. And of course, the Sabres, of course, still find themselves near the bottom of the standings, but they’ve played better lately. So, I don’t know where Kevin Adams is at, where he’s at with the team. Um, you know, his mindset to make the team better or or what have you, but you know, they still have a ways to go before they can say they’re in a serious contention for a playoff spot. That’s a ways off, but they’ve played better the last few games for sure. But Sarah Valley made it pretty clear that they have a lot of talented players for sure. But if they were going to make a big move, the player he kind of wonders about is Owen Power. Uh, of course, they have a bunch of defenseman. We know that there was some speculation about Byron maybe not sticking around longterm. We know Dalene is definitely the best of that group. Um they obviously would prefer not to move him and they’re hoping that it never gets to a point that he asked for a trade cuz that’s probably the only way they they go down that road. Um but between Bayum then of course they were trying to move Samuelson in the offseason that didn’t work out. he’s still there, but I think at this point um you know, he may not be the the most likely guy to go for sure, but power is a name that Sarah Valley really seriously wonders about. And the thing that kind of came to mind for me is the Maple Leafs. And here’s the reason why. We do know that the Sabres and the Leafs had trade discussions in the offseason. The Leafs were one of the teams seriously trying to inquire and make a move for JJ Purker once he became uh available on the market that they felt they had to treat him to uh to honor his wishes of not resigning and not sticking with the team. So the Leafs tried to get him. They were offering at the time Brandon Carlo. Uh now it wasn’t just Carlo one for one, but it was a package involving Carlo as being one of the primary pieces. We know the Sabres ended up doing that deal with Utah and they got Michael Kessle ring back. So Carlo would have been the equivalent like you know the castle ring piece of that puzzle that came to them in the pura trade to the Utah Mammoth. Uh so likely would have had to involve you know uh Carlo and something else. I don’t know what the something else was. Maybe that was the piece they couldn’t agree on. Maybe they like Josh Jones better out of Utah and did that deal with them instead. But either way, you know, uh we know the Leafs are very much open to moving Carlo and maybe, you know, they have a bigger right-hand defenseman in Kring. Would they want another one? I’m not sure, but obviously we know the Leafs could definitely use more of a puck mover on that blue line and maybe they make a a swap involving a guy like Power and Carlo. It would not be one for one. Uh definitely not. It would have to add more to it. I’m not sure what exactly the Sabres would want. I suspect it would be really tough for the Leafs to pull off given what the asking price likely would be. Um, if they wouldn’t take Carlo plus whatever they offered for Purka, I don’t know that they’re going to do that for power either. But if you know, Sarah Valley is wondering about a potential Owen Power trade. There’s other teams too that come to mind, but the Leafs definitely need to revamp their blue line. They need guys that can skate better, move the puck better. Obviously, we know Power has size. he can do that be an opportunity for him to to to go and play. You know, he’s from the Toronto area. Like, you know, just it could be a good fit, but we’ll see. Uh, obviously, lots of moving pieces there. It’s hard to say how the talks would go. And the other thing I want to touch on as well, of course, we heard the rumors here in recent days about Andre Fetchnikov out of Carolina being at a point earlier in the year where he didn’t demand a trade, but made it known he would welcome it and was ready for a fresh start. Had a very slow start to his season. At one point, Brendmore had banished him to the fourth line. He had eight games, no points. Things weren’t going well, and he was kind of wondering about his future. Now, things have settled down a bit. So, maybe it’s less likely we see a trade involving this player. But, I know on the daily faceoff um network, uh they had the morning cup of coffee show that has Kobe Cohen, of course, former NHLer and Johnny Lazarus. They were discussing this Fetchnikov uh situation and Johnny brought up the what he thought was a good idea in a trade between the Rangers and the Canes swapping Fetchnikov and Lafrenier. Now of course it wouldn’t necessarily he didn’t say it’ be a one forone deal but that you know Lafrenier plus something maybe for Seshnikov. Wonder about that. Now Johnny thought it was a great idea. Kobe thought it was a horrible idea and said that Carolina would never do that. that Fetchninov is way more established than Lafrenir and that Lafaneir’s never been consistent enough to really be um a player that if Carolina felt they had to trade Fetchnikov that they would really target and maybe he’s right. Um but I’d like to know what everybody thinks of that idea cuz we’ve heard about Lafrenier’s name being out there on multiple other occasions due to his inconsistency in the Big Apple. you know, would that make sense? Or do you see another player around the league for either of these guys that would make sense if their teams decide to go down that road? Because at this point, I think the Hurricanes are probably going to hold off on Speednikov. I don’t I don’t think they’re really in any kind of hurry to to make that kind of deal at all. He’s playing a lot better lately back to the first line. But if he hits another slump and gets demoted again or has further issues, it’s probably going to be a topic that’s raised again. But we’ll have to wait and see how things go on that front. Lafaneir’s name is probably going to be in and out of the room real as well until he finds consistent solid play and starts putting up better numbers. But the Rangers are in a unique spot here this year as well. They do have other issues to consider besides just laughier. I think their captain might be the biggest of all. Uh but we’ll see how things go. Let me know your thoughts on all of today’s news and rumors in the comments. We’ll discuss further. 1. The problem with the Leafs as far as trades go is they don't have anything to trade with unless it's someone off the roster and other teams are easily able to scoup anything worthwhile the Leafs may be interested in.

Dubas and Shanahan have done serious long term damage to this team through trading all their picks and prospects for rentals that they knew they couldn't resign and they never made a big enough difference.

    Jack ~'()'~

  2. Include this name..Mark Stone…This guys injured more than he ever plays. They can get something for his ass…AS a VK fan I'm sick of him..Some guys in every sport just nvr play. Hangnails stop em..He's nvr done shit nothing during the playoffs either…

  3. I think it’s time for the nhl to expand to different cities. Quebec. One of the tri city province. St. John. Moncton. Fredericton. I guarantee if we can get an nhl team here. Nightly arena sellouts. I would drive 2 hrs either way for a game.

  4. TOR has nothing to trade BUF for power.
The only player any teams would want is Knies and if they trade him most fans will NEVER watch a game again.

  5. Don't forget the Penguins have 4 legit goaltender's. If Edmonton and Montreal are looking for a goalie…. .the Pens sure have them. Now, of the 4 we know Murashov is untouchable, but with Silvos save % .916 or so and not expensive, Jarry whose save % is also up at .912 or so, has been an all-star, and if you go back to the last 15 games of last year with what he's done so far this year in 10 games that'll give you a good 25 game sample size of what he's been like. The problem with Jarry is 2 more years at 5.35$ mill. Finally, there's Bloomqvist who is showing at the AHL level why, once again, he was brought up last year on two occasions. Lots to consider, lots of talent, and Murashov is pounding on the door for his position at the NHL. Any thoughts from you? Blessings, Victor 🙏

  6. Carolina would never do that trade lol especially with a division rival like NYR. A Svechnikov trade would only happen if it were to bring in another Rantanen level trade
