Just When You Thought Things Couldn’t Get Worse for Vikings QB JJ McCarthy | The Rich Eisen Show

How many weeks next year do you give JJ on that leash if he’s not showing? All great questions. I do not know the answer to them. I don’t know what’s inside Kevin O’Connell’s brain. I do know Kevin Oonnell came on this very show and said that habitually organizations fail young quarterbacks before it’s the other way around. Is it possible he’s thinking that this isn’t working out? I don’t know. I am not in the meeting rooms. It would greatly surprise me if he if McCarthy is not grasping what he’s being told. um that you know and and again obviously I am biased because this guy won me a national championship and you can’t just win national championship with guys that are totally clueless when you’re playing for Jim Harbaugh. Um it doesn’t help that he’s like calling himself by his number nickname and then you know he’s like an unccorked bottle of wine and people are it gives it gives uh gives people license to start making significant fun of you that and also basically say you can’t talk your way into it or your way out of it. David. Um, so, uh, trust me, uh, I’m surprised with the struggles of it, but offensive line is not protecting him. That’s part of it. And, and you know, other part of it is he’s he’s airmailing people, but in between it, I don’t know how closely you guys watch the game, but he made one throw over the Packers defender. I think it was to Justin Jefferson that when he let it go, it went through like four pairs of Packers hands just right over them, right into the hands of his receivers. It’s in there, man. It’s in there. They just need to find it more. And then just understand like the rest of the team. Um, and kudos to also Justin Jefferson. He hasn’t gone on anybody’s Twitch feed and bitched and moaned. He hasn’t gone. I’m sure he’s doing it behind the scenes. I don’t know. I don’t know. He’s not taking it public, but he’s not taking it to the streets. Thanks for the call, David. Um, I don’t know how that would be helpful. How would that be helpful? I mean, you don’t think you you’ve met JJ McCarthy, he’s as mindful as they come, you don’t think he hears all this stuff and it doesn’t weigh on him. And it it it certainly since, you know, the other two quarterbacks that were on the roster last year that they let go or walk or couldn’t sign because they thought they didn’t want to back up McCarthy or look over their shoulder and see when are they going to put the kid in here have 16 combined wins right now. Eight each for Sam Darnold and and Daniel Jones. I don’t I don’t have the answer for you, but I I do know it’s distressing. And the you know, one of the numbers I saw too is that the the passer rating that he had yesterday of 34.2 is worse than if uh a quarterback took every snap in a game and spiked it. So, these numbers do not help. It’s like getting 200 points for writing your name on the SAT, right? So, you know, it it does not help. But, I do know they have the right coach. They just got to get some better protection. And we’ve seen it. We’ve seen it in fourth quarters. We’ve seen it in comebacks. It’s his first division road loss of his career. He’s one of two previous ones. They spent the whole offseason beefing up the offensive line. So, uh, while we were talking about JJ McCarthy, the, uh, head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, Kevin O’Connell announced that JJ McCarthy is in the concussion protocol. There’s so much news popping right now. Max Bromer, the um, is the undrafted rookie, right? He’s the backup. Wow. I mean, that’s him going into Seattle might make everybody uh yearn for McCarthy to be back out there, but man, it tracks I mean, he was beaten up yesterday. Micah Parsons, you know, Micah who won’t be defensive player of the year, not because of his u play. It’s just Miles Garrett is pretty much um crushing the competition on that front right now. Uh but you know how we said going into the season coming off of that trade with the trade rumors left, right, up and down. The stat that you heard over and over and over again was why would they trade the guy who is the only guy to have 10 or more sacks in his first four seasons of his career other than Reggie White? And they’re trading him to the team that Reggie White played for, blah blah blah blah blah. Right. Well, after handling his business against the Vikings yesterday and JJ McCarthy, who’s now in the concussion protocol, two sacks, three quarterback hits, three quarterback pressures, and two tackles for loss, um he now joins Reggie White, is the only players with 10 or more sacks in each of their first five seasons. So, there’s that. Yeah, ma. They were all over him yesterday. And this is the game where Kevin O’Connell’s feeling good. And I don’t blame him. Hey, we got our five offensive linemen back together, all healthy for the first time all year long. And that happened. Now again, does was JJ not calling the protections properly? Was he doing what he shouldn’t have been doing? I don’t know. That’s for the All 22 guys. We’ll ask Curt Warner on Wednesday. Hey, you made it all the way to the end. Thanks for that. 1. McCarthy NEVER won any games with his arm at Michigan. He was PROTECTED by Harbaugh. CARRIED by the Running Game and Defense.

He NEVER proved he had "IT" in College. End of story. He sucks.

  2. JJ won a national championship while throwing the ball like 6 times and with a great running game and defense. Michael Penix was the better QB in that game and it wasn't close.

  3. He's a 22 year old kid that has only played 6 games in the NFL can we give the kid a minute to try to figure it out? I get so sick and fucking tired of Americans need for things to be perfect right from the god damn beginning. IF they kid is still playing like this after 20 games then throw him to the wolves

  4. Sooner or later the excuses wear completely out leaving nothing but unvarnished rough truth. I will state it for the umpteenth time since October – JJ is a colossal bust. I will even go one better – Daniel Jones is as well and will fold up like a paper tiger the remainder of the season though the early record and run game could still win a postseason game or two.

  5. Thing to remember is that it takes time for a QB to develop chemistry with his receivers. Think Vikes receivers just aren’t feeling it like they did with Darnold.

  6. i’m going to be honest I’m not really sure why he was drafted so highly in the first place. Minnesota has arguably the best receivers in the country, and he’s doing the bad thing young quarterbacks do in holding the ball too long. I get why they felt like they had to move on from Darnold last year because they drafted JJ to highly but you gotta treat the NFL like poker and go with the hot hand

  7. This is why I would never draft a QB in round 1. Teams have no patience, the team that drafts him gets their worst years. The team that gets him on the rebound is the benefactor.

  8. On the ringer fantasy football show they said a stat about McCarthy that is shocking. That out of the 852 eligible quarterbacks this century, JJ McCarthy is ranked 851 in EPA per play, ahead of only Jamarcus Russell.

  9. Maybe he can just hand the ball off to Jefferson and he could succeed. JJ is an all pro at handing the ball off, throwing is playing into his weakness

  10. McCarthy wasn’t a passer at Michigan. Harbaugh runs the ball. I was surprised he went so high in the draft, and I’m thankful the Broncos drafted Bo Nix and not that guy.

  11. National Championships =/= Good QB. It's a team game, at a much lower and slower level. Not to mention that defense carried them lol I'm not even a GM and I saw this kid wasn't doing anything on that team

  12. Wait till the end of next season before you start throwing the kid under the bus. By then you'll know whether hes got it or not. It's way to early to start complaining about him.
