How Jaylen Brown became the NBA’s most efficient midrange shooter: “The analytics won’t show the potential of somebody getting hot”

  1. Hot shooting is absolutely JB’s strongest offensive skill. The rim becomes wider with each consecutive shot JB makes, once a few go in the defense is in huge trouble

  2. He’s become just awesome at creating space in the mid range. If you watch all of his shots in that area you can see how the threat of his finishing gives him a built in space provider. Teams/defenders are already on edge about giving up a layup to a guy who is 82% from 0-3ft so if you sell out on the rim he’s rising up for an open jumper. If you are crowding him on a drive but also understand you have to meet him at the rim, he’s just gonna use your momentum against you and give you a little bump but with JB’s strength those bumps becomes pushes basically and bam he’s got insane room for a pull up. Unreal shooting touch for him too, he’s an absolute monster.

  3. Of all the quotes, one really stood out to me the most:

“This year, we got to take whatever shot we can get, right?” Brown said. “So, I think everybody’s encouraging me to more be myself. But in the past, those shots have been discouraged more.”

  4. The only surprising thing about this season so far has been JB’s career high efficiency.  His 3-point shooting is trending back down, but he’s been so automatic from midrange that he’s still up around 50% FG.  I had expected him to average around 27 ppg with a dip to around 44%, but it’s stayed up in spite of far less talent around him.

  5. Every year, Jaylen works on something and gets really good at a new basketball skill.

Two years ago, it was his midrange, which became one of the best in the league. We are just seeing more of it with him as the lead guy.

  6. Feel like JB has been a good midrange shooter for years, and more efficient than Tatum at them. That said, the system was for three point shots or drives…so both worked to cut mud range down, and for JB, it often meant he was driving with the intention to finish at the rim, not pull up for the midrange. This led to a lot of unnecessary turnovers.
He’s still having those turnover prone games (particularly on drives where the defense digs), but as given his usage (up wome4hing like 6%), I feel like he’s done an admirable job. An additional turnover a game is still too much, but I think those will work downward as he continues to grow more comfortable.

  7. I love JB, but one of his craziest quirks as a player is that he’s money with the toughest mid range shots, but struggles with his free throws. Quick stop, pump fake, turn around fadeaway jumper from the free throw line? Cash. Take your time from the same spot? Brick
