THE HERD | Colin Cowherd STUNS, Pittsburgh Steelers Should FIRE Mike Tomlin | NFL
So, Mike Tomlin and the Steelers have not had a losing season in uh 21 seasons. But there’s a story this morning. Is the hot seat heating up? Well, he hasn’t won a playoff game in eight years. He would be fired if he was the Eagles coach or the Cowboys coach. He would be fired if he was I mean I the New England coach, the San Francisco coach, the Green Bay coach. Green Bay, you got to win playoff games. He’d be fired if he was the Ravens coach. But in Pittsburgh, it’s old school and they take pride in stuff uh like we have not had a losing season in 21 years. I I want I want you to think about that. I went and looked this up this morning. In that same stretch, 21 seasons, to show you how little that means, we haven’t had a losing season. In that same stretch, 21 seasons, 60 NFL teams with winning records missed the playoffs. Winning record doesn’t mean anything. It doesn’t guarantee anything. In 21 seasons, four times they were 500. Another four they were a game over. What does it mean? It’s just an arbitrary number. So, let me give you five, four or five teams that in 21 seasons have had losing seasons. The Chiefs, Philadelphia, Rams, Tampa Bay, the Patriots, they they bottom out. They have losing seasons. So, you know, this whole thing about Mike Tomlin not having a losing season. Let me throw this at you. You know who has the longest streak in the NBA of not having a losing season? I want you to think about this. Give it Give it 10 seconds. What NBA franchise has the longest streak of non-losing seasons? The Clippers 14. In their own city, the Lakers make fun of the Clippers. Jeannie Bus, the former owner, used to make fun of the Clippers privately and publicly. They were a laughingtock. Didn’t matter if Steve Balmer had 10 times the net worth. The Clippers are like the eye roll of Los Angeles. And they got good people in the building and Tyoo’s you’re the Clippers. I mean, you got a bunch of banners, but it’s just to me it’s just I Pittsburgh is um it’s a small city, you know. I get it. It’s old school. Uh you know, I mean, you you go to a party in Pittsburgh, you talk about it’s like St. Louis. Where’d you go to high school? Okay. You you know, I lived in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is awesome. It’s an awesome city. Great people. uh some of the best people out there. Uh really nice people and is an incredibly livable city. Uh plenty to do there. I mean, we don’t we don’t have to like shrink down Pittsburgh. It’s got some of the best colleges out there. Uh huge for nursing and medicine. Like it’s when it’s not raining and cloudy, it’s beautiful. Uh so let’s chill out, right? You you have uh Pit University of Pittsburgh. You got Carnegie Melon Decain. Like what what are we trying to downplay Pittsburgh right now? Man, get out of here at this nonsense. Come on, man. Come on. Let’s focus up. He’s He’s He’s triggering me trying to take shots at uh now the city of Pittsburgh. Before we get started, please don’t forget to subscribe and please don’t forget to watch the full length of this video as it is without a shadow of a doubt the best way to support the growth of this channel so I can keep making the best possible Pittsburgh Steelers content that I can now. Let’s have the conversation. Yeah, listen. I do agree that the whole never losing season is overrated. I I I completely agree with that. Two things can be true. It can be really impressive and it could also just like not matter that much or be over inflated. Like it’s, you know, Mike Tomlin is a great coach. He is an awesome coach. He is a incredibly competent coach. And so it’s it is impressive that he’s never had a losing season, but it’s not it’s not everything. It’s it’s it’s it’s not everything. Um, and it and it can’t just be that badge of honor that you consistently just put in front of you and that it shields you from anything else. That’s that’s unnecessary. Um, that’s that’s over inflated. Um, but it again we can look at like a Bill Bich who really bottomed out, right? And we could say that Bill Bich obviously obviously won way more rings and had way more success, etc., etc., etc. But we could also say that it’s really impressive that Mike Tomlin, no matter who’s been his quarterback, no matter the situation, he’s never been he’s never let this team reach the levels that even a Bill Bich reached. And like, yeah, that that is impressive and it is its own version of an accomplishment, but really in the NFL at the end of the day, it’s not about not just having a low floor. It’s about elevating the ceiling. And that is what a Bill I mean, you know, Bill Bich has passed his past his prime now, but like that is what a Bill Bich could bring. That is what an Andy Reid can bring, a Shawn McVey, etc. And so that that does matter. That does matter. And so, yeah, you should, you know, should Mike Tomlin be on the hot seat? Of course. Of course. That’s that’s how this works. And and again, I you know, the the last time that they actually won was when I was in Pittsburgh, and it was a really long time ago at this point. It was a it was a really long time. And you know, the problem is is that Mike Tomlin is great. And the things that come out of his mouth are great, right? He’s so well spoken, so organized, and so you know, when when you do talk to him, you’re you’re going to feel it. You’re going to be, man, this guy knows what he’s doing. So when you’re losing, you’re just like or when you don’t achieve what you think you should, you’re just like you’re like, I can’t how can I fire this guy or like this guy can’t be the problem. This guy knows exactly what’s going on. But the problem is now is the defense hasn’t been great and it hasn’t been for a bit of time. And like that’s a concern as well. I mean that to me is the biggest. It’s one thing if he consistently had this elite defense like we had seen with the Cleveland Browns, etc. the CA what the Kansas City Chiefs defense has become, the Philadelphia Eagles defense, but we’re not even seeing that. And that’s the biggest problem because if he still had that going where we’re just like, man, this defense is consistently elite. Like, oh my gosh. Then you would say, okay, Mike Tomlin is just really struggling figuring out the offense. He’s really struggling figuring out the quarterback situation. We need to pay big money and get the best possible OC we can get. We We need that guy to run this offense. So Mike Tomman can keep being the leader, can keep running the defense. Bing, bang, boom. We’ll get our quarterback. We’ll get our great offensive coordinator. We’re going to pay him a boatload of money to make sure that he stays here for the next three, four, five years, and we’re good, right? And then then you can make some magic. But that not that hasn’t been the case either. That hasn’t been the case either. So, it’s just that option’s not even on the not even on the table. So, to me, that’s where then the conversation goes. That’s that’s where I’m just kind of like, you know, what do you do with the Mike Tman right now? And if you do hire a new coach, it’s kind of just like the way, you know, because we’re I’m looking at a bunch of these, you know, a lot of these teams need like an like a a coordinating hire or a head coach hire. And I’m just like, it is interesting because I’m like, I don’t I don’t know where you go right now. Over the last few years, we definitely had a a legit pool of people where you could be like, okay, this this is a this is worth the risk or this is a good hire right now. I’m not so sure what that answer is with the Pittsburgh Steelers, especially because they don’t even have the quarterback right now. Like obviously their their long-term quarterback answer. And like someone like Nick Wright is trying to flow like maybe Kyler M. It’s like no, then you just keep going in circles. You you keep doing these half measures. You you can’t do that. You do need to find your quarterback of the future that ushers in a new Pittsburgh Steel Steelers era. That is that is what you need to do. But make no mistake about it, you need that coach as well, whether it be an offensive coordinator or an offensive head coach. So, it is a shame that we can’t see Mike Tomlin right now with like a great quarterback. back. And again, Tomlin deserves some of that blame of not being able to to make that work, to find that next quarterback because he is the head coach. He is the head coach. So, he’s going to get some blame for that. All of it, I don’t know. Depends what type of decisions he, you know, what type of power of decisions he has for uh at the quarterback position. I don’t know. Was it his decision that said, “I want Aaron Rogers. We’re gonna bring Mason Rudolph. We’re gonna draft Kenny. We’re gonna move on from George Pickkins. Like even that, look, look what he’s doing right now with Dak. That’s devastating. That’s an indictment on the Steelers and Mike Tomlin. It is. Like I said in my other Pittsburgh Steelers video yesterday, it was like you could have them both right now. The money actually makes sense. I’m not saying long-term you could have both of them, but in the short term you could have both of them right now. Absolutely. Aaron Rogers with DK and GP. Like that that could be working big time. That could be that could be working big time right now. And it’s not like you got this big haul for him either. It’s not like you flipped him into something where you’re like, whoa, you just got three first rounds. Like, huh? And you freed up a whole bunch of cap space. Whoa. That’s legit. Like, that’s not what happened. So, I I always think it’s fair to criticize these guys in these situations, especially when the expectations are really high, especially when you have the uh um you know, a reputation of greatness, you get held to a higher standard, right? Um and you know, especially when you’re a team as iconic and as successful as the Pittsburgh Steelers. That’s that’s it makes sense. It it makes sense. Um like I always say, heavy is the head that wears the crown. Like that’s you can’t just constantly, well, he won before. Well, never losing, right? It’s just like you can’t keep kicking that can down the road. You can’t do it. The Philadelphia Eagles hired Doug Peterson, you know, a couple years after him winning the Super Bowl. They’re like, “We don’t think you’re good enough.” And that ended up being the right decision. They moved on from him. And guess what? They don’t win these next couple of years, Serriani will be gone, too. They reach the conclusion that they they think Jaylen Herz is a great quarterback. If they reach the conclusion, nah, nope, we want someone else, they’ll move on from him, too. It’s it’s it’s keep up or get left behind. Los Angeles Rams, they had goth. They’re like, “Nah, he’s not good enough in this moment of time to elevate us.” They went out and got Stafford. Boom. Like, you got to be aggressive. The Patriots hired their coach and they’re like, “No, we don’t think this is right.” They went out, fired him immediately, got Rabel, got Josh, boom, transformed their defense and offense overnight. Overnight like things can happen fast in the NFL. Shawn Payeyton came in there with the Denver Broncos and said, “Russ, get out of here. You’re not good enough.” And that proved to be the case just like how the Pittsburgh Steelers said, “No, we’re okay on this right now. Transformed their franchise. They’re they went to the playoffs for the first time in 10 years and now they’re number one seed in the NFL, you know, in the AFC competing for a first round buy in home field advantage. Things can happen incredibly fast in the NFL, but you got to be bold. You got to take big swings, but you also have to have a vision. You have to have a plan. Things can happen fast in the NFL. And if you’re just making moves left and right, but you don’t know what you’re doing, well, then you end up like the Carolina Panthers. Then you end up like the Cleveland Browns. You don’t want to do that either. But the the alternative to that isn’t just, well, let’s just stand here and do nothing either. So, those are just my thoughts. I’d absolutely love to hear yours. What do you guys all think about the Pittsburgh Steelers? Should Mike Tomlin be on the hot seat? Should he be fired just straight up? Uh would love to hear Steelers fans thoughts. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below. I read every single comment. So whether you agree with me or disagree with me either way, let’s get in some discussions. Let’s get in some fights. Mike Tomlin is the most overrated head coach in the history of sports..
I said they'd finish tied with baltimore and would win the division by tiebreaker. I stand by it. Shakily
They don't lose…but they don't win, if that makes sense.
I agree
Trading Pickens after getting Aaron Rodgers was insane
It used to be impressive. We need something new
If it was just the offense, I could see no firing him, but the defense is just as stale and underperforming 160+ million dollars on that side of the ball.
Ok, find the clip of Colin a couple years ago (maybe the last year of Matt Canada?) where he is going after the Steelers fans for wanted to fire him. He said,
“You guys don’t know what you have with Tomlin and he would be rehired by another team in 5 minutes!!!!!”
He was really the main guy pushing that narrative about never having a losing season. Now he’s the one mocking us that it’s the only thing we care about. Dudes having been calling for Tomlin to be fired 10 years ago and taking out billboards in the city!!!
If he was white ,he'd been gone years ago. V
Pickens would not have flourished under this offense, just look at DK
Hire Flores!
What "STUNS"? Steelers fans have been saying that for years.
Why even say "Tomlin is competent coach" but then there is always a "but"? He simply is not competent any more. He has not been competent for years.
I'm with The Herd! I don't even go to the games anymore! And I get FREE TICKETS!!!😡😡😡
If your ass miss the playoffs, it's a losing season! He has plenty of them!!!
Talking heads like you guys with your “Tomlin Never Had A Losing Season “ that we Steelers fans heard from you guys like y’all are talking heads for Mike Tomlin. Tomlin should pay you guys for the good press. You guys parroting that crap is what stuck us in the Burg for lots of years with this average coach. . You guys are the ones that cursed us with Tomlin. Thanks for having Pittsburgh back with Colin bs about The Burgh.
Mike Tomlin is a good coach, Not a great coach
I don’t feel bad for tomlin we passed on hurts, Lamar and drafted Kenny Pickett
We don’t attack a team over and over again that is playing three back up linebackers. Story of Tomlin ball. Tired of watching this 9 year repeat!
He only has a job because of the Rooney rule great video and in the long run that is why they won’t fire him and they won’t fire him because they’ll have to eat the contract which would kill the Rooney’s mentally
As far as I know, they don’t give out trophies, for having non-losing seasons!
