Worth stating that this money didn’t come from the pirates pockets. Not implying anything other than adding the detail in case someone didn’t know that.

They could have low-balled him like they did to Cole, but know that, if they want any shot at extending him, if there is a cap system implemented, it was to give him a decent raise now, too.
He is going to be gone BEFORE he ever hits arbitration – probably out of here before the trade deadline next season.

So the pirates are now broke and can’t sign any real talent since we spent 3.4 million?
