Alex Rodriguez calls out ‘hypocrisy’ in Bud Selig being a Hall of Famer

  1. Yeah, completely fair to point out that the guy who turned a blind eye to steroid use while knowing about it is in the hall and the people who used steroids aren’t.

  2. He’s right and I don’t see what the big deal is about letting these guys in and just put something about them being a PED user or gambler or whatever on the plaque. Most Cy Young’s, most HRs, most hits, most 60 HR seasons, etc. all not in. Those things happened!

  3. It is why I am all for the steroid era guys to get in now. The guy that knew what was going on and swept it under the rug is in. fair game at that point.

  4. You can hate on ARod all you want but he speaks the truth here. Selig turned a blind eye and let hit happen. He gets in while Clemens, Petitte, Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, etc all have to wait outside.

If you’re going to have standards, have standards.

  5. Selig should be removed, also wouldn’t vote for A-Rod. Imo the guys who cheated post enforcement deserve harsher criticism than those who did it while it was the Wild West. Until Bonds and Clemens are in, at the very least, I don’t want to even discuss someone like A-Roid

  6. Bud Selig not only turned a blind eye to the steroid era he actively tried to cover it up. A-Rod is 100% correct that he deserves as much of a stain on his legacy as the players

  7. Commissioners don’t get to unilaterally impose steroid testing, it’s collectively bargained.

Selig was in favor of testing but was blocked by the union until Congress started getting involved, then both sides figured they better come up with something, then we had that weird anonymous mass testing around 2003.

Also there’s no rules keeping A-rod or anyone else out of the HOF (except Pete Rose and Joe Jackson and a few others). He hasn’t gotten enough votes. Selig got in through one of the committees, which is a separate thing. I don’t think any voters are on both the regular HOF voting group of writers, and one of the separate committees with contains a mix of players and writers. So not sure how it’s “hypocrisy”, a word which either is used incorrectly all the time, or has changed meaning over the years to something else.

  8. The most infuriating part of this whole HOF debacle is how arbitrary BBWA’s and the various committees deciding who gets elected to the Hall are. Why do Ortiz, Pudge, Bagwell, etc get a pass for being linked to steroids but Bonds, Clemens, and A-Rod get shit, let alone Selig being elected? Because some players had better relationships with the media? It’s a joke.

  9. The HoF should add a special Bud Selig Wing exclusively for all-timers whose steroid use (real or suspected) has to date barred their entry. Kill two birds with one stone. He’s earned that distinction.

  10. Bud Selig orchestrated the sale of the A’s to his frat buddy Lew Wolff who went on to botch all attempts to build a new stadium in Oakland then sold the team to John Fisher who moved the A’s to Vegas.

Bud Selig hated Oakland and wanted the team moved for decades. He sabotaged all attempts to keep the A’s in Oakland.

    Fuck Bud Selig.

  11. He tried to remove 2 historic teams from the MLB to increase the market share of his Brewers. Ignored the steroids and then tried to claim he knew nothing and banned them after. He doesnt belong in there

  12. Bud Selig being in the hall is a joke. He was commissioner during the 94 strike which in and of itself should have disqualified him. Throw in the steroid era and it’s overwhelming.

  13. He’s right but ARod would look a lot better if he stopped cheating when they tested. I really think he and Manny would have gotten in but they kept cheating.

I remember people telling me Manny was the one guy that didn’t need steroids because of how special he was at making contact and his bat to ball skills were the best ever. I think he’s a good example of why steroids help in all cases. I remember people saying HGH wouldn’t help NBA players even though it’d help them a ton. It helps with muscle but also recovery like Pettite (who also probably gets in if he didn’t admit it, nobody would have assumed he was using) and helps guys like Dee Gordon hit doubles instead of singles.

The lines are so blurred that I think everyone from pre-testing should be treated the same.

  14. Some players in the hall are verifiable steroid users. Read Canseco’s two books. Also, Canseco has some amusing things to say about A-Rod not related to steroids. Hint-Canseco’s wife.

  15. Let the steroid guys in. FFS, I know some people don’t think ARod is genuine in his turn-around but he’s at least tried to make some sort of amends and he has taken responsibility time and time again.

Meanwhile Budfuck reaped all of the rewards, threw these guys under the bus in front of Congress and got in the HOF on the backs of their efforts (fair or not). Fuck him.

  16. ARod is a piece of shit for a multitude of reasons, but he’s not wrong here. Selig sucks. Dude is more than happy to take credit for the late 90s revival of the game regardless of who was actually responsible and how those that were responsible made it happen.

To that point about Selig sucking, I never thought we’d get anyone worse than him and then Rob Manfred showed up and told us all to hold his beer AND that piece of metal known to the rest of us as the World Series trophy.

  17. Ignoring steroids entirely, Selig was one of the owners who got caught colluding to drive down FA prices three seasons in a row. That by itself should be disqualifying.

  18. As a kid growing up in the 90s, no player ever broke my heart like ARod. A small part of me will never love nor trust baseball the same because of him. That being said, you cannot tell the story of baseball without him but you can absolutely omit Selig.

He should unquestionably be in the HoF.
