Keith Hernandez reacts to Mets’ blockbuster trade of Brandon Nimmo for Marcus Semien

We are now joined by S. NY Mets
analyst, Keith Hernandez and Keith. You’ve seen Brandon will
go from a raw talented, teenager out of Wyoming to one
of the faces of the franchise. So what do you think it’s going
to be like, for you to go to port? St.lucie in a few months
and not see Brendan Mo with the Mets. Well, it’ll certainly be
different. We’ll miss Brandon, you know, things happen in
baseball and I think what the season the way
they had the season last year. The disappointment, it’s wasn’t
as bad as 2007, but 2007 happened in the last month, last year, happened over
collectively over the last four months of the season, they just
didn’t play well. So you kind of realized I felt that there
was going to be a big shake up and it started with the
coaching staff and no doubt. And this is a big
shake-up as well. And we see the Gold Glove behind you, which
reminds us. That no one appreciates the fundies more
than you. So, how do you think adding markets Simeon will help the Mets in that
department? Well, you know, there’s the old
adage I think we’re getting back to old baseball in Alto
degree, slightly coming back around the old adage is, you
can’t win unless you’re strong up the middle, which means
catcher your two middle infielders and your center fielder. So Simeon won the gold glove. He’s been out, he’s one of more
than once. He’s going to provide defense up
the Middle with Lindor. So they’re looking to improve
the defense on this ballclub and I really feel. This is, this is just the first step. I
think there’s more fireworks to come. That leads me to my next
question, because as you mentioned earlier after the
disappointing, end to the season, you expected a shake-up. So what
do you think? This trade says, About what David Stern’s
is looking to accomplish this offseason. Well, he’s been pretty clear
that he wants to improve the defense. I still feel that you can’t
replace Pete’s bat and I’m hopeful that they will sign Pete will find out how deep and the
pockets are of mr. Cohen. But I think that
Pete was the biggest clutch hitter on that team last year, all year long. And I feel that. He’s a tough one to
replace. You’re not going to replace 125 RBI. So if he comes back and
there’s a lot of work to be done and it’s very interesting. What has
happened now and we got the winter meetings, coming up
very shortly and we’ll see what mr. Stearns
has to what direction he goes as you just alluded to, you’ve
been a Pete Alonso advocate for a long time. He’s coming off a
big year. How much more competition than last year? Do
you expect the Mets will have to sign them? Well, I think there’s going to
be interest in other teams and no question. I’ve we’ve
heard, you know, only what I read and what is that? Boston is interested. Wouldn’t be surprised, what the
green monster. Other teams are interested in
Pete. I mean, he’s, he’s a quintessential cleanup
hitter. He’s he’s probably the best power
hitter. He along with Aaron
judge over the past five, six, seven
years, Pete’s career. I mean, his numbers are power. Numbers
are incredible, you Can’t find anybody that can
replicate that hardly anybody and it’s hard to come by in any
generation. So, I think that it’s very
imperative that he stays with Soto’s. A left-handed bat
lenders are right, switch hitter. I mean those two guys
are going to stay, they’re not going anywhere. Everybody else
is a little got, maybe a little bit on pins
and needles about which would have which direction the Mets
are going to take. But I feel that Pete should stay. He’s Too
big a piece and it’s going to be interesting
to see how the polar bear Market heats up
this offseason Keith Hernandez
as always, thanks for joining us
here on Honda Sports night. You got it a man. Always good to see
you look good in blue tie.

On SportsNite, Eamon McAnaney speaks with Mets legend Keith Hernandez as he breaks down why the Mets had to make a big move, the resurgence of “old baseball,” and the importance of Pete Alonso to this lineup.

  1. Absolutely love Nimmo and will miss him. He never cheated the game and thats how I will remember him. This team not making the playoffs was unacceptable and those things lead to changes. Semien is a WS champ who just won his second gold glove at 2nd. Nimmo was declining fast with his arm strength and speed in the OF which is a problem when you also have Soto in RF so something had to change there bc 5 more yrs of that wasn't going to work as we witnessed. Im excited to see what Stearns does and how the team looks come March. Don't overreact to moves made in November 🧡💙

  2. Keith Hernandez one of my favorite Met players of all time. My favorite 1b man along with Lou Gehrig. Without a doubt best sports announcer in the game. As a longtime Mets fan he is without a doubt the best Mets ever had. Great sense of humor. I really should make a video of Hernandez, Darling and Cohens funniest lines.
I play a game called Super Mega Baseball and always make sure I get Keith in my franchise. Most consistent hitter year after year in game just like in real life. Smart and amazing defense at 1b.
Keith can easily be a manager in mlb if he ever wanted to.

  3. Can't win unless your strong up the middle. Very true.
My old coach used to talk about the importance of defense and pitching. He would say "If we score we may win, if they never score we never lose".

  4. Keith was blindsided when The White Rat dealt him off the defending WSC To the Last Place Mets
Keith didn't have a no trade clause and was not yet a 10-5 player but there was a team option for 1984 and The Mets had to pick it up but they let Keith decide if he wanted to stay a Met if not the Mets would of traded him to get something but he stayed and Mets do not win the 86 WS without him
The fact that Brandon was not part of a WSC With The Mets will keep him off the rafters
Just think Cleon isn't on the rafters but is in the Mets HOF, Brandon should get that honor with deGrom.Funny that #48 for deGrom has never been issued, will probably be the same for Brandon unless they get someone that wants the number

  5. Semien is actually a better hitter than Nimmo if he isn't hurt but he plays 2nd base… They're probably looking at trading McNeil. They need pitching…. they need some proven starters and not guys in their 40's like Scherzer or Verlander. Nimmo will be sorely missed… but they need a fireplug also… someone to excite that bench…. they had that with Iglesias and Bader… some outgoing guys … those are the intangibles that make a team great and that this team needs OMG.. Am I right!!!.

  6. Dumb trade. Nimmo by far better offensively . And I wouldn't start Semien. They have better options in the young players. Semien with me managing is a good backup for the infield.Mets are classic example of You Can Have All Money In World but if you don't use it right your team will not rise to the top.

  7. Betcha Pete is upset enough with Brandon leaving and O'Neill being replaced to actually want to leave. The Mets just needed to get some real pitching in the off season. They have just screwed the pooch.

  8. I don't understand why there's such an emphasis on getting more hitting and better Fielding when I don't think that was the majority of the Mets problem. their problem was pitching so I totally disagree with this move. Brandon was fine, not to mention a fan favorite and he was also 3 years younger and hit more home runs and had more RBIs van Simeon and his Fielding wasn't that bad. I give this trade a thumbs down

  9. If Tatis is available, do it. Move Soto to left, Benge Cf. Tatis RF. Taylor 4th OF.
TRADE Alvarez, Sproat, Acuna and Vientos for Tatis and 1 of their top relievers.
Then trade Parada C , Senga P and McNeil U to the Rockies for C Goodman , Rp Vodik and prospects
