Albert Breer: The Chicago Bears are “ahead of schedule” because of Ben Johnson

fighting with our executive producer and a gentleman named Chris Kanty who don’t have the Bears in their top 10 power rankings. Yet the Bears have one of the five best records. Others that I’ve read have the Bears eight, seven, nine. Where would you put the Chicago Bears if you had to do a top 10? Well, first of all, I don’t do power rankings. And second of all, um, you know, I I am so sick of these arguments. I mean, we’re not talking about the AP poll here back in like, you know, 2005 when it’s actually going to have a material effect on what happened. So, um, you know, all these arguments over respect and everything else, they’re fun, but they don’t mean much. Um, you know, I I I I think the Bears are in a really great spot right now. Um, you know, obviously u being all alone at first in the NFC North and um, you know, I think it’s fair to say Ben Johnson’s program is ahead of schedule. you know, that they’ve done this without like just consistent great quarterback play. I think it’s another another feather in his cap, you know, so they’re in a great spot. Um they’re in a good place going forward, you know. I I I hear the same stuff up here in New England, you know, with like, oh, why aren’t the, you know, Patients have the best record in football? Why aren’t they talked about that way? It’s like relax, you know, like you have your established teams in football. And I think, you know, everybody respects the teams that come up this way um you know, in a in a given year, you know, but there’s always that okay, like let’s see what happens in the playoffs. And obviously, you can’t answer those questions until you get to January, which may be frustrating for fans to hear, but it’s just the reality of it, you know. Um because I think too often we’ve seen teams in the past that, you know, have, you know, risen up during the regular season that fall flat when you get to the playoffs. That’s the real pro proving ground, you know, and and and and if the Bears keep playing the way that they’ve been playing, they’ll be there and they’ll have a chance to prove it. What do you think of the state of the Eagles? And I sounded like a freaking coach probably explaining that. Yes, you do. Yes. Thank you. Thank you, Ryan Day. The the state of the Eagles coming off the loss against the Cowboys. Yeah. Yeah, I mean I I think the the Eagles are in an interesting spot because I I I look at like a lot of what’s happened there over the course of the last um over the last couple of months and I really see it as like you know this is the value of Mick Serriiani and I think I’ve said this to you guys before but his value really isn’t drawing up a player developing a quarterback. his value is um and his ability to to bring a team together and to program build and um that’s why they can absorb so many different egos, so many different types of personalities and you know I think you know over the year uh over the years Nick Srian has done a really nice job of that. Um you know the other piece of that that I think is really cool is like they’ll be whatever they need to be right. So like um you know a few years ago they didn’t run the ball very well so Jaylen Herz threw it a lot. They use Herz as a runner. Last year they were a very heavy running team, right? Like with Saquon Barkley performing at an MVP level and and this year it really feels like they got to lean into their defense and you know to Vic Fangio’s credit and you guys are obviously very familiar with Vic um and his work like they have become an absolutely dominant defense. what happened on Sunday against the Cowboys notwithstanding, you know, and if you look at it like that’s really kind of the the hallmark of this team that’s going to be a little bit different than the one you’ve seen last couple of years is they’ve struggled a little bit offensively. Saquon hasn’t had as great a year. Um Jaylen Herz has been up and you know obviously the receivers, you don’t see the same, you know, statistical production from the receivers, but they’ve really been able to to lean on what’s become a really dominant defense. I in terms of looking at where this season is right now, other than the Rams, who I think most would agree is the best team in the NFL, if you were picking a team and go, I think that team can make a run. Who is that? I was talking about this with my wife last night who’s suddenly because we have a family fantasy league watching football all the time and I’m like, whoa, relax over there, hun. She wants to bet the Houston Texans out of the AFC against the Rams in the NFC. Is there a team out there that you like that’s off the board? Seattle. Yep. Are they off the board? Are they off the board enough for you guys? I don’t know. What do you think? Sure. Absolutely. I mean, I Yeah. I I I just I I watch the Seahawks week after week, right? Like, and I know there’s going to be some doubts about Sam Darnold. I would like if you look at his last year and a half, maybe Sam Darnold has a Rams problem, you know what I mean? Like it’s not really and I and I and I don’t know what that is. He has just not played well against them and I think he’s played them three times now in the regular season last year in the playoffs last year and now in the regular season this year. Um so he hasn’t played well against the Rams, but other than that he’s been really good. And that’s a I mean like you look at like what the Ravens have been over the years and you can really see Mike McDonald building that in Seattle and um you know I I look at some of the plays their defense made like I don’t know if you saw a play where there was a play like I think it was a third down where the Seahawks had to have it um against the Rams last week and and Jenna Alou Emosu like absolutely just stood up Kyron Williams in the hole and you just I think it was like sort of to me it was like indicative of like what a hard-edged physical nasty team that’s become you know so I think that that’s become a very difficult football team to play. So Seattle’s the one that I look at and say if we’re talking about like we’re looking up in two and a half months and like holy crap that team’s in the Super Bowl, like maybe they would be the one that would be like the surprise. They pulled the upset in the playoffs and they somehow got there. That would be the one for me. Albert, what do you got going for Thanksgiving? Well, a lot of nerves because Saturday is a big one for me. And I’m not going to be like one of those cowards from Michigan who like pretends it doesn’t matter so it serves their purpose so they can play possum and then pop out when the result goes their way. This one does mean a lot to me. So I’ve got knots in my stomach over that. But uh yeah, you know, my I think you guys know my wife’s a nurse, right? So she uh she works Thanksgiving um so she can have Christmas off days and so uh and so we I’ll smoke a turkey tomorrow. Oh wow. On Wednesday. Um yeah. So smoke the turkey on Wednesday. Um we’ll do like kind of a quasi Thanksgiving um with me, my wife, the kids, and uh my mother-in-law on Wednesday night. And then on Thursday, so my my parents used to go to my my my dad’s family in Detroit um every year. They they haven’t done that the last couple of years. So we have high school football here um on Thanksgiving morning. I I don’t know how many You guys don’t have that in Illinois, right? Like so no, we have high school football on Thursday morning. So, we’ll go to the high school football game and then I will my kids while my wife is working to my parents house for like sort of a second Thanksgiving out there. And uh I will watch all the games and work for my for my parents house on Thursday. Love it. Well, we’re thankful for you. You have an awesome holiday, man. Yeah. And hopefully I’ll be in a good mood on Tuesday, getting the right result on Saturday, getting those mother bleepers and restoring order. Um, we’ll have me in a chipper mood next week. So, let’s hope we can hope we can get there with that. Get it done. All right. The All right, guys. Yep.

Albert Breer joins Kap & J. Hood to explain why the Chicago Bears are ahead of schedule — and why Ben Johnson is the biggest reason for it. He also shares his thoughts on the Steelers matchup and what the Bears must do to stay on track in the NFC North.

  1. The Flash dodging a bullet has nothing on Albert Breer sidestepping Kap’s power ranking question. Just another in a long line of journalists who can dish it out but can’t take it.

  2. Canty is a fn clown. Bears beat Steelers, whooped the cowboys who tied the packers and beat the eagles, and the bears BROKE DC when they were 3-2. The haven’t beaten anyone take is simply incorrect

  3. The coach is solid , best bears coach ever – Williams is a talented QB and given the crap we have had a QB he is better and already a good QB. He needs to be more accurate to be great, hopefully that is something that can be taught
