Team depth discussion and stats. Core is performing but injuries will stall the team’s wins quickly.

What the fuck happened to Kasper
If this record and production keeps up, I hope we are deadline buyers for the first time in 10 years.
I’d love to see Steve make some moves but the options are so limited right now. With the rising cap teams can afford all of their players AND with such a close playoff raise nobody will be selling until the deadline.
Who are the viable trade targets that match our core timeline? I presume Finnie isnt the top line wing answer. Or are we still focused on a top 4 dman? OR can we yeet compher into the sun and find a viable 2nd C (i dont like copp either but hes at least useful).
Ps. I hate the player Rasmussen became. A power forward that plays softer than the stool of someone that’s never seen fiber.
I do think this is a year where Yzerman makes a move to acquire. Ideally it would be sooner rather than later because pretty much every team has cap space to bulk up.
What wouldn’t make a ton of sense is to go after a player approaching his mid thirties, which is what’s mostly going to be available.
To complicate issues more, with the standings being so damn close, I can see scenarios where teams want to hold on longer to see what their playoff chances continue to look like. In the same way people are expecting to have to overpay in FA, the same goes for the trade market. I cringe at the price someone like Hughes will command but the reality is that when a player of that caliber becomes available you should push all your chips in, but I’m not sure that’s Yzermans style. I suspect it would be something like Edvinsson, Danielson, and two firsts or a first and a 2nd. If they could get away with something like ASP, Danielson, and two firsts that would be ideal. But who knows, that might be way off.
I see Yzerman going for Dmen depth/upgrades. If Philly starts faltering, I can certainly see them moving Ristolainen, which would be a great piece for our 3rd pair that can easily slot into the top 4 with injuries/shakeups. I’m really curious what St. Louis ends up doing as they’re not a young team but don’t have the fire power to keep up in that division. Do they make someone like Thomas or Kyrou available? I also wonder if someone like Forsberg becomes available in Nashville. It’s a weird year.
Man, if we could get a legit second line scoring winger at the deadline or something, that’d go such a long way, even if it’s one on an expiring deal. Could probably spread the talent around three lines.
We are definitely at the phase of the rebuild where it’s up to Yzerman to get bold via the trade market to get this team over the hump. Stockpiling the pipeline and relying on prospects won’t get you all the way there.
I’d rather wait for the offseason. If we’re confident the acquisition will sign and they fit the timeline, then im all for it. But I dont want to give up assets for a rental to get over the hump. Deadline rentals are for a cup run, not so we can feel better about the rebuild.
Instead of getting into a bidding war near the deadline, would it be worth it to just pull the trigger on someone now and start building the chemistry during the season so that the team is more cohesive by the end of the season? I know its always risky pushing chips in, but at some point management is going to have to do it, and with how much cap space the team has in combination with expiring contracts at the end of the season, its not like making a real trade is going to kill the team.
If the Wings could go find a proven top 6 center or top 4 defenseman, I think its worth the premium now in order to not have to start bidding at the end of the season.
I mean if there was a way to manifest the $11 mil we have in Copp and Compher into someone else that would be great, but it’s unrealistic. The fact is, the lack of depth creates a scenario where we have nothing that anyone else wants. So we’d have to give up on a young player to go grab someone who can help now. Who is everyone comfortable with giving up on?
The only people performing offensively is the same 3-4 people . That’s a problem
It is unfortunately obvious how little production we’re getting from the bottom six, and it *is* depressing.
I’m gonna say what no one wants to hear, in no world should we trade for Quinn Hughes. He’s going to NJ to play with his brothers. Unless it’s a sign and trade, it would be a mistake.
Also, listen to Chris Johnston Show or any other insider. Teams aren’t trading right now. Too many people are too afraid to trade anything in fear of fucking with team chemistry or overvaluing prospects, picks, etc.
On paper, the Predators and Blues “should” be trading right now. But it’s a seller’s market and they know they can sit on their hands and wait for an opportunity they can’t refuse.
I’d love to have a ROR but he’s supposedly being honored a NMC even though he doesn’t have one? As in he likes it in Nashville and they’re not trading him. I’d also like a Forsberg, but do I really want to have him on the team till he’s 36, when the core of this team really is 20-25 right now in Kasper, Danielson, Seider, Raymond and Edvinsson? I really don’t know. Especially considering he’d cost a lot, and has a NMC.
We need speed and someone who’s tough to play against in the offensive zone that can win a board battle and go to the net. No perimeter hockey, isn’t on the wrong side of 30, and puts up points. Find me someone who can do that, that’s available for trade, and I’d be interested.
See players like: Zach Hyman, Matthew Knies, Brady Tkachuk, Chris Kreider, and on the up and up, Jake Neighbours. Those players perform in the playoffs and win you games.
