I’ve NEVER seen this before
If you were hoping you could slow down or stop Matthew Schaefer hype on this channel, you’re going to have a bad time. He’s unreal and once again just took over an Islanders game and called game by winning it for the Fish Sticks in overtime. Barzel has it. He’s working the mammoth while Sha is doing his best Al McKinnis impression. Stick just way high. And you already know Barzel te’s him up with a buttery biscuit and Schaefer claps it back in the net. Paul’s game. Time to go home. And the craziest thing about this one, that’s his seventh goal of the year already, which is good for the league lead in goals by defenseman, not rookies, everyone. He’s also now leading rookie scoring in goals and points, which is insane. I thought the demigod was going to run away with the Calder, but it looks like we got another Dman winning this year. I mean, that’s early, but his year to me already looks better than Lane Hudson’s, who had one of the best all-time years by a Dman. And Schaefer is doing this, getting top minutes. He’s leading the Islanders in time on ice. And again, this is definitely a bit of hyperbole, but he does remind me of Crosby in the sense that is this rookie too good for team Canada to pass up. I mentioned this when we talked about Celibbraney or Bedsy. Could the real conversation about who makes the team be about Shay? Points aren’t everything of course, but he’s already tied as well for fourth in points by a Dman with Adam Fox and Evan Buchard chasing Miro Hastinan and Josh Morsy by two. Well, Mar Shocker is crazy away with 24 points in 18 game. But the most impressive thing Schaefer’s done, he’s made a Patrick Wah coach team fun to watch. Listen, I’m obviously a biased Rangers fan, but the Islanders were not fun to watch last year. A solid team that played just a god awful, boring defensive system, but Schaefer has turned that on his head. I mean, Pacio has been great, too. Shout out to his four shorties so far this season, but he’s the one getting the clicks in the TV channel tunein. Anyway, enough glazing. What do you think about Schaefer and the Islanders so far this year? And is he putting himself in the team Canada convo? Seems crazy. An 18-year-old defenseman, but I’d do it.
Matthew Schaefer scored the game winner against the Mammoth Friday night as he continues to set the league on fire and oh my, he’s actually made the Islanders fun to watch! That and more in today’s NHL hockey video!

Buttery biscuit…
A 6 ft pass Ray Charles himself could have made.
Glaze fest
I wish Mathew Schafer was my son. I’d have something to be proud of.
Huh? Patrick Roy installed a reckless at times aggressive system and it was made way more obvious by taking over for lamberts defensive system they just have the right team now. I can't really expect more from a rangers fan. Because if a Rangers fan knew anything about hockey or just life in general they wouldn't be rag fans
Quant hockey has JGP at 2SHG not 4……
Fantasy wise would you do schaeffer, fantilli for Quinn hughes
No more Lou micromanagement BS
He's already as good as the great Bobby Orr was.
If he is not on team Canada, what are they doing
I would wear an Islander hat much more intentionally now since Schaefer shined.
I think he should but will team kannada have celebrini, bedard and Schaefer
I think I saw an early list where they were actually considering Bouchard from the Oilers 🙂 This kid needs to be on the team, the energy he will bring and his skills will make the team unstoppable. As usual, Team USA will make all the wrong choices like in the past Olympics.
The Stormin Mormons are a storm lol
Ok, you own the Islanders. You want to take a chance this kid gets hurt at the Olympics when if he stays healthy he has many Olympics in his future. It's going to be tough "playoff" hockey and is it worth the risk right now for him to play? I think that question will be asked by the Owner and GM.
bedsey schaf daddy and celebriski to italy BOOK IT
I have always believed in selecting the very best at the time, to represent your Country in Competition. I most certainly would have kids like Bedard, Celebrini and Schaefer on Team Canada. Leaving guys that off the a team has been a historical norm…and it is embarrassingly stupid. If you want an example of abject dumbassiousness, just check out HOKEY Canada’s WJHC selections last year. Everyone one of them should have had their names and photos published so we all know what stupidity looks like. In the past they would select some guys who couldn’t put the puck in the ocean…for DEFENCE. NEWS FLASH…give me a young, hungry, blazingly fast, talented kid and he’ll be better at defending…he will defend but given the opportunity, he will capitalize. Skilled players can play any way but defensive forwards can’t. We have seen a lot of the old stars and some (one), like Sid deserves to be on Team Canada, but give me speed and skill. This Team COULD be absolutely dominating but I have all the confidence in the World, those selecting the Team will EFF it up.
So many great young stars in the league right now. The future looks bright!!
Not gonna lie. I've been an Isles hater for 50 years. Was tortured by their fans in the high school I went to. Never heard the term "fish sticks." I'm a bit embarrassed, but also cracking up a bit. Thanks, bruh.
LGI
I would definitely put him on team Canada why not? I would probably put him on before Devon Toews at this point. Who’s even above Schaefer besides Makar. Same with Celebrini and then probably Bedard too
I think Darche is the real reason the Islanders are fun, Drouin, Heineman and Schaefer have made the team much more fun to watch, and it seems like that is the direction Darche wants to take this Islanders squad.
1:09 you’re right points aren’t everything, how’s he doing defensi… according to puckmark’s metrics he’s 92% (i think this is percentile for defensemen) in 5v5 defence
only if they kept Dobson, that would be a pretty good top pair.
He needs a bit more size to be a playoff threat
LGIII
I think that the hardest part to discern is if the Islanders are legitimate, meaning they are going to make a playoff run this year, they are no longer sellers. Everyone walking into this year thought the Islanders would not make the playoffs and therefore at some point would offload some of their contracts like JGP. But if they continue this momentum, even if they don't win five in a row again or they win every other two games, etc, they're not going to be sellers anymore. I don't think they have enough capital for them to be buyers though. The Islanders have some very good solid prospects. Ready to make the jump from the CHL to the AHL or the AHL to the NHL so they're not going to want to get rid of those. Especially as some other NHL contracts come due this year and next year. Schaefer Is having us all believe this could be not just a rebuilding year but a rebuilding year with a playoff run. That's really difficult to achieve and fun to watch.
Damn how am I just now finding out you’ve got a hockey channel too
Demidov who?
I'd take him as a 7th D on team Canada. He's good against mediocre bottom 6 NHLers but idk about in world-class best-on-best tourney
The crazy amount of people that still want to discredit his ability to play in the Olympics because of the “physicality” are so fucking stupid. Yes hockey is physical, but guess what, it’s about SPEED, if hitting was actually super important, then cal clutterbuck and Matt Martin would be considered some of the greatest players ever. But they’re not obviously. Quit dickriding “the physicality” religiously like it’s some oversimplified necessity that every player needs to be built like a fucking tank. I hear nobody saying the Hughes brothers or Hutson shouldn’t have a spot, all while Schaefer is already a bigger and more aggressive player than them. He’s already risen to a top 10 defenseman in the league without a doubt. And if you can’t agree to that, then you clearly aren’t fucking watching.
The Islanders haven't had a boring defensive style since Trotz was let go.
He's more than skilled enough for a team Canada spot, problem is we have no idea how 'consistantly' good he'll be.
I don't think we'll see him on Team Canada for that reason. But he's looking like a lock for every team Canada after that.
Statistics and mathematical probably proves that the NHL and all current sports are being manipulated by outside involvement. Stop supporting a rigged and scripted sport that is used to take money from the middle and lower class to furthur the devide between good and evil. Wake up.
love the randomness of him oiving with boomer eisasen's daughter
The real deal.
Roy knows a little something about breaking into the league at 18 and becoming a star. bringing him along just fine….
Youngest OT winner in history. 💙🧡
How long before you guys swap out Potvin for Schaefer in the beats his wife chants? The man has been retired for almost 40 years, and you still can't go to an Isles vs. Rangers game and not hear that chant. You guys need some new material.
These young players are setting the bar on talent.
Best last round pickup in yahoo
They got Matthew Schaefer and Emil Heineman and both are looking amazing this year. I'm a Habs fan and I was sad we had to add Heineman in a trade for Noah Dobson, but definitely both teams benefitted there. It's great to see Heineman having such a good start to his sophmore season, so hopefully he can keep that going! With Schaefer really upping the Islander's defense, could we potentially see the rebirth of Fort Neverlose? Only time will tell…
All these conversations about who should Canada take… EF asked a good question: how many winner take all games did these young guns played before? in order to remove Cup winners from the roaster u’d need prove that they can perform at the time when the pressure is highest. Not on a Tuesday night against the Mammoth… my bet is they take 1 of the 3 (Bedard, Celebrini or Ms) but they wont play a single minute on ice.
Do not slow down the hype. He’s the real deal
This kid makes it look too easy!
Brian Leetch on the island called that even before the season started
As an isles fan that was always believed offensive defense take years to be effective in the NHL, my brain can’t comprehend what I’m watching
My last fantasy draft pick is looking like a Pretty good steal
Honestly I think he’s 3rd line material for Team Canada.
have to agree — isles have been downright miserable to watch ever since trotz left. but this year they're ELECTRIC
