Bulls have a gem in Matas, and Billy isn’t unlocking his potential. He just needs to let him play!

  1. Billy has a lot of flaws but imo his handling of Matas isn’t one of them.

After the hot start to the season, Matas is struggling with driving to the basket and giving away possession too often.

Matas has said he wants to be coached hard, and that’s exactly what Billy is giving him.

  2. Agreed, that anecdote he told on the old JJ Redick podcast was telling. Donovan is holding him back

  3. Have some of yall actually been watching the games? Matas is playing sloppy as of late. Love the guy. Want him to be the best. But this is on him. Not Billy

  4. Nah Matas hasn’t been great this year and it doesn’t seem like he’s really learning

  5. Matas is still going through growing pains but it’s inexcusable that Patrick Williams gets run over him at times.

  6. Hard disagree. Billy is doing fine with him.

I would argue he is handling Buz perfectly… if Matas wants to be held accountable (which he is very vocal about), coach needs to hold him to that. And Billy is doing exactly that.

Donovan isn’t perfect by any means, he has his flaws… but you are wrong about this one.

  7. At some point you have to let players play through mistakes to learn. Benching him every time he plays bad or makes mistakes will make him play scared. Bulls aren’t winning shit so let the kids play and grow. This desire to win 38 games and be in the play in is fucking strange. AK is the dumbest mother Fucker in sports

  8. You’re not seeing things as they are. Matas is getting targeted over and over and over again. In all honesty he may be getting too many minutes

  9. For all the people saying that he isn’t playing well, you’re missing the point. Matas needs minutes to develop and reach his ceiling. Young players need to be allowed to make mistakes and play through them. The Bulls are nowhere near contenders, so they should be using this season to see what they have in Matas, Giddey, and Noa, who are the only players on the team who have any real upside. We might lose more games in the short term, but what’s the fucking point of making the play in again with Patrick Williams playing 25 minutes a night

  10. While I also don’t think Billy is the right coach for Matas long term, I disagree that this slump can be attributed to him, I think it’s just sophomore growing pains. He should have a longer leash though. If we think he has even an ounce of superstar potential, he should never be getting less minutes than P Will if they’re both healthy.

  11. Matas definitely makes mistakes but I think Billy just needs to let young players play more and learn . We’re not going to win now with this roster so let’s just go all in on development. Not saying this happens with Matas specifically but many times players get hot and Billy randomly pulls them it’s frustrating

  12. His on ball defense has been objectively bad at times and he gets into foul trouble routinely. Do you watch the games? But yeah, there’s been games where he’s hot and it’s sad to watch the Billy’s favorite lineup (which is 4 PGs essentially) get destroyed on the glass and give up 10+ second chance points in a quarter. Still, at least you can trust Giddey, Ayo, Coby, and Tyus Jones to take good shots and not commit brain dead fouls constantly. When they’re clicking, that lineups ball movement is insane. This is an issue that’s plagued the team for years: a lack of a reliable PF, or really any wings that you can trust not to make major mistakes. I’ve lost hope in Williams at this point and hopefully Matas can add some strength and clean up his defense, there is still hope for him. Noa is very raw but I hope he can start contributing next season.
