Lions Review and Giants vs Patriots History | Giants Hangout | New York Giants

Welcome into a week 13 Giants hangout brought to you by Crestron. My name is Maline Burke joined as always by Russ Salsberg, Brandon London, and Jonathan Casillas. The Giants have Monday Night Football on deck for week 13. But first, we got to get into a little news and notes around the team, starting with the fact that the Giants fired defensive coordinator Shane Bowen elevating linebackers coach Charlie Bolan to the role for the remainder of the season. Casillas, as the defensive player on the on the panel here, what’s your immediate reaction to this one? The Giants have lost what, five games now? uh basically the defense giving up leads where I I feel like this year the question coming into this year was was the offense and I think the offense answered those questions and consistently the offense has scored drives uh touchdowns on first drives which hasn’t happened in years past. Um built up leads and the defense late in games have just not figured out a way to close out these games when the Giants have leads. And then last week the Detroit Lions, they averaged 12 yards per rush. Like that is that makes me sick to my stomach. Like it it was, you know, we’ve been talking about defensively them not being able to get off the field and make the plays to win the games. Not saying that this is going to answer everything, but somebody had to be held accountable. And of course, uh, Deball being fired a few weeks ago, Shane Bowen, you know, this is a team that they have to figure out how to finish these games because they’re in every single game. So maybe this can spark a little life on the defensive side of the ball. Right. You mentioned 12 yards per rush, too. That was the reason Bowen was originally brought in was his strength in defending against the run game. That didn’t end up being the case. Also, you know, losing so many significant leads, including Sunday at the Lions. Russ, you know, another game in which the Giants held a lead, the entirety of it until they didn’t. Lions didn’t lead until overtime for the first time, but we got to talk about a little bit of the bright spots on the offense. We saw some trick plays out there. The offense was a lot of fun to watch that side of the ball seem to be in their bag. Well, listen, the offense a as JC said, you know, the problem we thought was going to be the offense this season. That hasn’t been the problem. It it has been the defense. I mean, you’re seeing trick plays. You’re seeing we’re also looking at a team. Look at look at what we had last week. You didn’t have Jackson Dart. You didn’t have Malik Neighbors. We know they were out. You don’t have Cam Scatterabo. You got key guys in your offense out and these guys are doing a job. I I can’t say enough good things about the offensive performance. I I mean, everybody on offense is contributing. Juan Del, Theo Johnson, I mean, they’re getting the job done. So So it’s not a question of uh the offense, the qu is the defense, and that’s what it is. And you know, I mean, JC hit it on the head. You know, JC said there we’re in the games. in the games were leading most of the games. I mean, that’s why a guy lost his job and it’s unfortunate, but you know, push comes to shove, something needed to be done. Well, and you mentioned, too, that the Giants are in games, and these are problems that in years past, scoring on the opening drive was something that they wanted to address. Scoring more than 20 points in a game was something that they couldn’t get to for years at a time. Now, they’re doing that and they’re doing it in a creative way. The defensive side of the ball just needed to make a change. But Brandon, as a wide receiver, I know during camp, you know, you were keying in on Gunnar Ovesky saying, “This guy can make some plays. This guy’s can make some catches.” Did you know he had an arm like that, though, throwing a touchdown pass to James Winston? That kid is special. That kid has everything. And I think he needs to be involved in the offense a little bit more just to see what you have in him going into the off season. Don’t just look at this kid as some sort of kick returner, punt returner cuz he’s already outplayed that title. It’s now time to get him some jet sweeps and get him involved in the offense. Maybe some quick outs, get the ball into his hands and space and see what he can do. But I’mma push back to both JC and Russ. The offense has been doing good, but not great. If I’m sitting here as a offensive player, I’m putting some of that firing on myself as well because yeah, we could put up almost 900 uh uh total yards of offense in two games, but we’re not closing out drives every single drives. There’s been points that been left on the board, and it’s like, okay, from years and years, the defense has had our backs. Now, we’ve had our opportunity to close out some games or the Broncos game, not throwing the interception, Cowboys game, not getting down to the red zone. what two to three times and only getting what 10 points out of it. So if you look at it, football being a complimentary game, I understand what you guys are talking about and yeah, someone’s someone’s head to be put on the stake or whatever, but at the end of the day, offensively, you’re feeling like you’re the cause as well because you want to be able to close out football games as well. Yeah, I I get that, Brandon, as a team. It it is complimentary, but if you look who’s doing good and who’s not doing good, it’s clearly on the defense. Clearly on Hey, did did you see in the second quarter? And I’m serious, folks. In the second quarter, Giants are up 10 nothing. It’s third and goal from the 11 yardd line. Goth throws an out pass to Aman Ross St. Brown. He goes 11 yardds untouched. untouched through everybody. And I’m saying to myself, you know, to me, that’s not a scheme. Th this is Pop Warner football. Can somebody tackle somebody? He went through everybody. That’s what I’m talking about. The guys need to start looking in the mirror. They need to start looking in the mirror. We just got two guys fired. Okay. And Maline, before we move on, because we don’t know how much more football he’s going to play for the New York Giants, can we please talk about Jameus Winston and how exciting of a player he is throwing the ball, catching the ball, shook off, off him. Like, he is playing like I mean, what other player in the NFL right now is a more exciting player to watch than Jameus Winston? Like the Giants, their record, horrible record. The Giants are a bad team according to their record, but when you watch Jameus Winston play, you’re like, I don’t know if this team is bad as we think we because he plays such an exciting brand. He throws the ball like incredibly down the field. He didn’t make too many mistakes and it’s still Jameus ball cuz he definitely going to make at least one crucial mistake, but but not really. Like it’s, you know, there’s that moment those interceptions, but it’s not like he’s, you know, spraying it all recklessly. He is decisive and accurate and making plays for this team and making this a very exciting team. I saw on Tik Tok a creator who was like, you know, when you think about height, 5’9 is the tallest of the short people and 510 is the shortest of the tall people. I think the Giants are 5’9. They are the best two and 10 team in national football. They’re so much fun to watch and they’re just that close to being like all right on that other caliber, but they’re they’re they’re so good. They’re going to be they’re going to be a team you tune in and watch every week even if they lose the game because they are so much fun. And Jameus Winston is bringing so much joy. That also makes it hurt so much as well. You are having fun watching the football game. But I think the biggest thing to me that stands out for Jamus is the leadership and how these guys are following him. You see the handshake Hen and Jackson Dart had on the sideline after the touchdown. I mean, that’s one of the longest handshakes I’ve seen in sports, JC. They still doing it. They ain’t even finished up yet. But that just that choreography took time. Yeah, that just there’s got to be a shot clock on these dag on handshakes these days. But that just goes to show you how guys rallying around this guy, how infectious his leadership and his personality is. And yeah, I it’s it’s exciting watching him and these guys play, but at the end of the day, it just it’s a gut punch. It hurts when they don’t come out with the W. Well, he’s also to the perfect kind of veteran quarterback because he’s been in this league for a really long time. He has a lot of experience, but he’s also not seemingly got that ego. You know, some some veteran quarterbacks around the league will be like, I should be the starter. I will begrudgingly be the backup until my number is called. Jamus is enthusiastic. Whatever his role is, whether it’s QB1, two, or emergency quarterback, he’s out there doing his choreographed handshakes, having his exciting gas up his teammates moment. And Russ, I mean, you’ve seen several quarterbacks on all levels of of the game throughout your time covering this team. Just what is he bringing? It’s just so much joy. Well, but I mean, that’s why he’s here. That’s why they signed that’s why they signed him to a two-year deal because his veteran leadership, his attitude. But listen, when they signed him, the game plan was clearly going to be the backup, you know, moving forward. I mean, you knew that Russ wasn’t going to be back here next season, so you knew uh that that um Jamus was going to be the backup next season, but first of all, that’s his personality. We see it every day. He’s always got a smile on his face. Uh he’s great with his teammates. He’s great with Jackson. He’s great with guys. He’s always talking to them in a locker room, building them up. I I mean, that’s the kind of guy I mean, he’s pardon grabbing a phrase from another sport. He’s a home run. He’s a home run in a locker room because he’s just he’s what you call a good dude. Plus, he can still play as we’ve been talking about. So, it’s a combination. He you couldn’t ask for a better backup quarterback situation. Not just because o of like what we saw this past week, but just because of his attitude and his rahrah and he doesn’t walk with his head down. It’s not about me. He’s a quintessential example that that there is no I in team. He is a team guy and you know remains to be seen who’s going to start at quarterback. Jackson Dart has been working his way out of the concussion protocol. So, will he play on Monday Night Football? Will it be Jamus one more time? Remains to be seen. But whoever it is, the Giants are going to be looking to keep this offense going. Um, Brandon, when you when you look at this matchup in prime time, what’s the key to that one? Uh, the key to it is just to continue to do what you’re doing. And I would, you know, I’m having a great time watching Jamus, but I would love to see Jackson Dart, if healthy, play this game because the Giants have their Drake May right now. they have a kid that came into the season to around the middle, you know, early middle of the season like Drake May did last year and shows some really good things and you see the step that he was able to make this year. So, I would love to see that head-to-head, but at the end of the day, this Patriots defense can be ex can be exposed. I understand Christian Gonzalez is a really solid uh corner, but guys have gotten behind him. Um, but just some bad balls and and the luck of a bad throw has has kind of not exposed him enough. But if the Giants just continue to do what they’re doing on offense and they fix as much as they can fix on the defensive side of things because there’s not going to be a magic wand waved and then all of a sudden the Giants become this top 10 defense. It’s just about closing this season out on the right foot on the right playing some good football. Now show the yourselves going into the offseason because like they say JC at the end on garbage bag day we ain’t never going to see the same team. after this, after we walk up out of these doors, it is not the same team going forward. So, close this season off on as much as a high note as you can and that starts with a win in Foxboro on Monday Night Football. Yeah, like you mentioned too, this is the last time that this exact group will be together. The core of it perhaps next year, the nucleus of it. Yes. But there’s going to be changes. Um, and Brandon, you mentioned not just the offense, but the defense too. It’s a great opportunity for Charlie Bolan stepping in to the role as defensive coordinator. JC, it’s got to be helpful that he’s got a little bit of a longer runway to prepare for his first game calling the shots on the defensive side of the ball with a long week with Monday Night Football. Um, what are your expectations for the defense going into this game? It’s more of it’s more of not really the performance, it’s more of the accountability. You know, I’m watching on film and it’s just bad choices being made. You know, big holes for linebackers to fill and they’re hesitant to fill them. you know, guys taking on crack blocks and they’re not taking them on, they’re receiving the crack blocks. Defensive backs coming in and not hitting guys low. They’re trying to hit running backs up top. Like poor decision- making. And that could be corrected on film because we’re seeing these things over and over and over and over again. And they they need to be held accountable, you know, cuz a lot of times effort is being questioned. And I’m watching the film and I’m like, it’s not effort on that play. just a bad choice that made him look like he he didn’t perform. He didn’t give his best effort and it’s more of a not a great choice, not a great decision. Now, we talk about this quarterback that they’re playing against, Drake May, the guy that just goes through his progressions so easily. If not, he can run the football. He is the dual threat of 2025 of what you want. He is the pocket quarterback that’s as good as anybody in the league. He’s second overall and and plays down the field 20 plus yards. He he first of all, he is leading the league in passing without having a a game over 300 yards passing. I don’t even know how you can pull something off like that. Consistency, consistency, consistency and efficiency with this quarterback. He had a pick six last week, a little overthrown ball, but besides that though, he’s very accurate with the football. He’s very decisive with the football. He can run the football. He makes smart decisions. He was going down on one play and he he just got rid of the ball to to give up a to to make sure it wasn’t a sack and it was a incompletion. Little plays like that, not having a good start last week and then finish the game strong. This kid is the reason why he’s a number two overall in MVP voting because he’s a allaround great decisive smart decision maker and he throws the football better than anybody else in the league right now. And he shows too that from year one to year two, not just as a player, but as a team. I mean, year one, the Patriots struggled a bit. Year two, now they’re 10 and two and, you know, guaranteed to be above 500 for the first time in quite some time as a franchise. But Russ, when you see not just what that team as a whole has done, but what Drake May has done, what’s your what’s your key on this game on Monday night? Matteline, the key for me is the same thing each and every week. finish plays, finish the deal, finish the job. You know, I I I I know we’re sounding like a broken record, but the defense, listen, you just got a guy fired. I understand. I I understand what Brandon said. You know, it’s got to be complimentary football. A man just lost his job. You know, he just lost his job going into Thanksgiving. You know, guys, wake up, look in the mirror, and say, “You know what? It’s on us today. It’s on us today. The offense has been doing the job. We got to finish the deal. They’re giving us leads and we got to make sure the lead is protected. That’s what needs to be done. That’s what needs to be done. Listen, there’s a lot of history between the Giants and Patriots. We’ve seen these two teams many, many times before. So, Russ, what better time for some What do you know? What do you say? What’s the trivia this week? Yeah. What do you know? What do you say? Well, when talking Giants Patriots, yeah, as you say, Matt, there’s there’s a lot of um a lot of history, but I’m not going to give you any Super Bowl questions this week, people, because that would be far too easy. So, I’m going to go to 2007, week 17. I believe it was December 29th, and it was at Metife Stadium, and the uh it was a barn burner. Uh, I remember being on a field after the game because I was at channel 9 at the time and the game was also on our station. 3835 was the final score. Patriots winning on their way to what they thought was going to be an undefeated season. Well, in that 3835 game, the Giants scored five touchdowns. Simple question for everybody. Who scored the five touchdowns? And one guy scored two of them. Flaxico Burus. Okay. Dominic Hixon because he returned the P. He returned the kick. There you go. Uh Mario Manningham. No, he wasn’t there. That’s right. Wrong year. Wrong year. This is my rookie year. This is my Bradshaw I believe scored. No. Where the running back uh Ward where or Ward? I keep getting Derek Ward. Derek Ward. No, he was hurt. He was hurt at that point. Yeah. You’re narrowing it down, people. Uh, Steve Smith. Steve Smith scored. No. No. Dang. Tyrie wouldn’t have scored. No, not on that one. Not on that one. Let’s go back to running backs. You named everybody Jacobs. Hello. That’s one. Yeah. Hello. Now, Burus, by the way, had two touchdowns. He was had two. So, you’re missing one guy. Kevin Boss. Kevin Boss. Hello. Big seven. Kevin, baby. Kevin Boss. I remember that game. I’ll always remember that game. One because any practice squad years I had to be Randy Moss. So I had to be him twice. And J, that card would just be 84 81 all the way down the field with highlighted throwing the ball. Rest in peace to Hefty Lefty Jared Lorenzan. I got I earned my check those weeks. I had Did you Did you throw the hand up? Oh, absolutely. Abs. I would absolutely. But those those were the times. Those were the times. Yeah, man. That’s amazing. Brandon’s rookie season on this Giants roster. That was my I worked that Super Bowl as a PA for ESPN. We were all connected through that 2007 season and then now look at us. Complimentary game. Um all right, listen. Giants Patriots, we got to talk about some memories. Let’s do a little blind rankings. I have five moments for you all um throughout the history and they’re all coming from uh Super Bowls. You know, Russ Super Bowls, I’m going, “Hey, we’ve done it twice. Let’s go.” Super Bowl memories. So, starting with 2011, Manningham’s catch on the sideline. So, these are only Super Bowls. We’re not doing Yeah, cuz one of my all-time favorite moments is the game I just said when they lost 3817, 3835 on their way. I I believe that game propelled them to good things. But yes, it did. Uh, Mario Manningham. Three. Three. Because you understand the other two we’re going to be talking about. I gota I have You have to put that at three. Yeah. I’m trying to remember. I was I was going to say I was going to say two, but I know I’m going to kick myself in the butt because I know which is number one, but um maybe I’m missing something. So, I’m going to say two. I’m going to say two. I’m going to go two here because when you when we put this in in the notes and I started thinking over moments and stuff like that, I don’t know if there was a better throw and catch location like the difficulty. Yeah. And of course the time of the game like you’re just not going to see that like you know. So I’m going to go too because I’m with you Brandon. I know there’s at least one more play out there that we can put above that one, but man, it’s so hard to beat that play, bro. Oh, man, it’s so hard to beat that play. All right, speaking of the time of the game, though, 24 seconds left in the fourth quarter in 2007. Jay Alfred with a sack. Where’s that going on your uh power rankings? Five. Huge sack. Huge sack. But we got to put that at five. Five. Five. I’m going I’m going four. I’m going for Yeah. Okay. All right. My boy Jay. Shout out my boy Jay Alfred. Uh 2011 Chase Blackburn’s interception. Four. Four. Okay. I’m going five. Four. I’m going five. All right. 2007 gamewinning touchdown by Plico Bur. Plico Burus. Oh, you know what? Okay, I I get you. Yeah, I I get you. Um, listen, we all know the helmet catch was an iconic moment, but the touchdown scored after the helmet catch doesn’t get as much and we have to go too because plaques didn’t practice that entire week and I banged up my uh my my quad and I’m in I’m in the uh treatment room with him and he is in one of his moods and how moody plaques can be and I said something to we were both on the on bikes and I said something to him and he got so moody with me and I flipped on him and was like, “Bro, you mad at me cuz I’m on your side all the time and blah blah blah blah.” And he went out there and had the performance that he had. So to me it was like this dude had one leg the entire week and went out there and performed. That that play was was huge. So I got two on that one. That’s two. Russ listen obviously I get what we were talking about. So that would have been two but I already picked my number two in Ningham. So to me that which sounds crazy, but the Plaxico touchdown game-winning touchdown ends up being number three because to me there can only be one number one. Yeah. And I’m I’m right with you uh Russ because we we have four and five switched. But I kind of knew this these three top three players are going to end up like this. So I’m gonna have to go number three. And of course I think we’re all consensus with what the number one play is. the number one play for everyone with let’s see about uh a minute left in the game. Let’s say was it? Yeah. Mod Bradshaw meant to take go down but he accidentally fell into the end zone and scored a touchdown. 200 falls the end zone. Oops. a score. Just like just like the green green bay on the blind rankings for the food. But if you think about it, if you think of what that touchdown meant, that was the you can put that as number one, the number one spot. Plus, he I mean, it is a really odd like it’s one of the weirdest scoring plays in Super Bowl history. It was meant to be one way and it was like oops. This is some bull stuff right here, Pearson. How you not going to have talk about Super Bowl moments. How do you not include the helmet catch? Come on, guys. I can do whatever I want. Look at Pearson, the voice of God, chiming in. I do what I want. The helmet. The helmet catch has to be the play. Catch one. It could be nothing. Clearly, not just a helmet catch. Getting out of trouble. Eli getting out of trouble to throw the ball so he can make Eli getting out of trouble was as equal to the helmet catch. It was just tremendous. No. Case closed. Ahmad Bradshaw’s accidental touchdown. The number one moment in Giants Patriots Super Bowl history. That’s the consensus from our blind rankings. Hey, listen. I’m here for it. Yeah. Well, well, well, uh, Pearson must have been blind when he was figuring this stuff out cuz the catch got to be the catch. We can’t be too obvious here. We can’t be too obvious. Everyone agrees on that. All right, Giants Patriots. We’re going to do some rapid fire, so let’s be quick with it because I got three questions for overunder. Right. All right. Starting with Juanale Robinson. He had nine catches last week. Overunder, six and a half catches against Patriots. Brandon, I’m going over because he’s a yak guy. The little little mighty mouse has been absolutely balling. He and Jameus got something there. There’s what we like to call in French Laistra. No, no, I just made that up. But we like to call in French Laistra. You just making up language? Yeah. And it should be German. I’m supposed to be learning German and I went with French. My bad. I mean, last week he’s telling us about his modeling. Now he’s trying to speak French. I mean, what you going on a runway again for crying out loud? Renaissance dating profiles. Hey ladies, the model speaks French though. Uh JC over under six and a half catches. Um, well, I think if the Patriots are watching the film that we watch, I don’t think they’re they’re going to let him have so many opportunities to catch the ball like he did last week. I think they’re going to try to hone down on him a little bit. I think he’ll be right at six catches. I’m just going to go under. I do love Wandelle. I’m sorry. Go ahead. That’s okay, Russ. Yeah, I’m gonna go over. I I just think he he he’s in a groove. He’s having a career year. I I mean, uh, he looks like he’s going to be a thousand yard receiver. Uh, I’m going with Juell. He’s he’s really he’s taking it to the next level. All right, I’m gonna take the over as well because he’s just proven to be a reliable target, whomever is that quarterback. All right, over under half a touchdown for running backs. Do running backs get in the end zone, JC? Yes. I think this is the game I think the Giants want to establish to run with Kafka at the helm. They look like first, second down, red zone, third down, and third and short. They want to run the football. I think these guys will be able to punch one in. Brandon over. I’d like where the run game is going. We haven’t had that home run hitter just yet, but it’s stable and I like, you know, I like stability in my life. All right, so Brandon saying we uh Russ over. I I mean, I agree with um what we were saying. You know, KFKA uh he was sticking with the run last week. It didn’t end up paying dividends. I believe, you know, they’re going to run again. Yeah, I it’s going to go over. All right, let’s go passing yards. If it’s Jameus Winston, over under 280 passing yards for the quarterback. I go over for both of them. Both of them can slang that sling the rock. So, regardless if you’re eating W’s or you doing some sort of Malik Neighbors dance and Jackson darts, both of them have the ut have the confidence and every single receiver that they play with on that outside and it shows these guys going to make plays for them. So over no matter who’s that QB. All right, Casillas. I got over for Jamus for sure. Uh when Jamus is out there, man, he’s just a guy that look he’s looking downfield. He’s going to throw it into tight windows. He’s going to throw it down the field. He’s going to throw it in double coverage. He’s going to throw it in single coverage. He’s just going to give you a chance downfield, man. And I definitely going to go over for Jamus. Not so much for Jackson because a little bit more of a run game. Even though I know he got knocked out the game the last game he played in. I just think it’ll be an under for for Jackson, over for Jameus. Russ, I’m gonna go over for both guys. I I’m gonna go over. Listen, I I think uh if it is Jackson and Kfka has said if Jackson is cleared, he’s the guy. Uh but I I just think they would do a little less running for for Jackson in that and that means he’s going to be maybe passing more. Yeah, I I think go I agree with everybody. We’re going over 280. I could see it being over as well, airing it out. And if it is Jamus, I just got to give a little fun fact. There’s only two players in NFL history that have had 300 or more passing yards and 25 or more rushing yards in a single game. One, Tom Brady. Two, Jameus Winston. That’s it. That’s the only times it’s ever happened. Uh Jameus had 366 passing yards last week. If he’s in, I’m sure he’ll air it out again. If it’s Jackson, I wouldn’t be surprised I’m taking the over as well. But let’s go. Giants, Patriots, Monday Night Football. All my rowdy friends are here for Monday night. Uh we’ll be watching, we’ll be tuning in, and we’ll be here every week for Giants Hangouts presented by Crestron. We’ll be off next week because the Giants are on a buy but resuming after that. So for Russ Salsberg, Brandon London, and Jonathan Casillas, I’m Maline Burke. We’ll see you next time.

The group recaps the Giants vs Lions game, looks ahead to Monday night against the New England Patriots, plays a game of blind rankings of Giants and Patriots Super Bowl moments, and does some Giants trivia. Presented by Crestron.
