“The Vikings Won’t Give Up On JJ McCarthy, But…” -Dan Orlovsky | Pat McAfee Show
All right, last question here. Let’s stay in the NFC North. Go ahead, Ty. Yeah, Dano. Last week before the Vikings played the Packers, you basically said like, “Hey, JJ McCarthy, his mechanics, everything. It’s not going to get fixed this year, but you know, they might be able to actually fix this over the the course of the next, you know, off season, and he he will develop.” After Sunday’s game where he just looked like dog shite once again, where do we stand with JJ? And do you think there’s a chance that they don’t even give him that opportunity and they cut bait before he can actually realize his full potential? Yeah, I don’t think that the latter happens. I mean, this young man just hasn’t played football. He’s barely practiced football in the last two years. I think the biggest concern right now is you are watching paralysis by analysis. I mean, there’s clips where he catches the ball in the shotgun and you can see him walking through drops of trying to think of what should I do with the football right now? What should I do? Let alone what should I do with the football? Meaning, it’s almost like he’s trying to think of what is what are what is the coaching point of a drop or a landmark or how many steps. I’m counting steps in my head. I’m counting what I should be doing with my left leg and my right leg or trying to think of what I should be doing with my left leg and my right leg rather than okay this is the defense this is where I try want to try to work and this is how I can manipulate somebody or how feel coverage and so this is the no that’s not the clip but there’s a clip where you can see him go left leg right leg left leg and it’s almost like he’s walking through it in a walkthrough type of mannerism and he’s just there’s definitely an overthinking right now um I understand it he’s in a stuck place and it’s not a fun place to be as a quarterback. I don’t think they give up on him, but because of the lack of performance and the lack of health and availability, there’s no question you’ll have to bring high-end competition in. Well, Max Bros certainly can do that. This dude’s a stud. He He can spin it from what I’ve been told from the film study we’ve seen. But that’s kind of been the conversation is that Kevin Oonnell can make anybody good. What’s this guy’s name? Who cares? Kevin Oonnell’s coach and the offense coordinator. If he can throw a football, he will be a good quarterback. Then when we we talked to Kevin Oonnell down at owners meetings, we said because they were looking for a quarterback. Obviously, they had moved on from Sam Darnold. Danny Dimes had left the building. Aaron Rogers allegedly uh was interested in the job, but they seemingly passed on him or let him know they were going to pass. We asked Kevin Oonnell, what you’re looking for, and he said accuracy. So, did we think JJ McCarthy was an accurate passer? Like what? Go ahead. I would say this, Pat. I think one of the things that I certainly did not think about, and coach could probably speak to it better, is the guys that Kevin’s had a ton of success with, it’s in part because they’ve had experience in the NFL. Like, they mechanically have worked through some of the issues that maybe were a problem in their past. Kirk Cousins was a vet. Sam Darnold was a vet. Uh even some guys like Nick Mullins who’s had to play, he’s been around the NFL for four, five, six years. And so this is, you know, Kevin O’Connell’s first time with a young, very young, and certainly unproven player. And it just feels like the expectation of baseline performance for the the coach and the play caller was here and where the player is is really here. So I would probably pinpoint it on a lack of development to the point that is needed. Injury hurts that obviously his rookie year. big conversation. Coach Ba, the author of a book called The Quarterback Whisper, that’s what he’s actually titled, Bruce Arens, 47 years in football, has coached every single quarterback that’s basically ever played quarterback and also every quarterback that has gone into the Hall of Fame. Basically, you know, quarterbacks inside and out. You know, the NFL and the league and how it operates in offense and everything like that inside and out. Uh, when you hear about JJ McCarthy and how it’s all going and the stories coming out, his leadership’s great, his moxy is great, and then you hear these things like, well, he also calls himself nine when he’s on the field and he’s on demon time and he’s got to control all that type of stuff. What are your thoughts? What would your messaging be to him? And have you ever had an experience like this with a young quarterback that maybe is struggling very, very, very hard early? Yeah, a couple times. But, uh, yeah, the alter ego thing is, uh, it needs to be AP. What’s that? Accurate passer. Okay, not snot. We don’t need snot bubbles and tears. Okay, you play quarterback, not linebacker, okay? We don’t need all this hyped up [ __ ] All right, just go [ __ ] play quarterback and be relaxed and throw the damn ball to the right guy because you got the talent. Now I go back his senior year, what he throw 45 passes entire in fourth quarter, his entire senior year. 35 35 I mean that that’s that’s not NFL ready. Then you miss your rookie year. All right. All right. So, he has had no development as a pastor. And like mechanically, you can’t think about mechanics in the NFL. You got to be thinking about where the hell am I going with this ball in two point seconds. All right. This thing’s got to go somewhere right there because of this. I don’t think he’s he’s missing all of that right now. First of all, how the hell do I get back there? How do I read it? Where’s it going? And then also, how do I throw it? And now he’s thinking about how the hell to throw it. So, it’s like that’s bad combination, brother. Really bad. What would you say to him? You tell them just [ __ ] it. We got to stop thinking about all this stuff. Or how would you do that? I was maybe re just relax. Get rid of nine first thing. Let’s let’s get rid of nine. All right. And uh let’s get JJ in there and play. Yes. You’re a hell of a leader and but it got to be it’s totally different when you’re leading Michigan and you’re leading the Minnesota Vikings. Yeah. The Michigan team could run 50 straight times on basically everybody because of who they had. Minnesota is not going to be able to do that. And Kevin Well, they could. I guess they tried to. Yeah, they’re going to have to. I don’t think it’s going to win in the NFL, but Kevin Oonnell’s entire offense is based on this guy processing, developing, knowing, and delivering quickly, just like Shanahan’s offense. Some good weapons. And that’s why Justin Jefferson sitting out there, Addison. I mean, that’s Naylor’s Jordan Mason. Oh, Darasaw paid left tackle. They were they were the number one seed in the NFC last year and then they decided like, hey, this is what we’re going to do. So, there’s a lot of pressure on him to develop, which I can see why he would overthink it. But you’re saying we need to get rid of all of that. We got to wipe that slate clean and just go back to basics.

got rid of a guy who got them lots of wins and guy is winning elsewhere and viking in last…..
"YOU LIKE THAT?!" is going to be making a refurn to Minnesota next year lol 😂 And those fans would welcome it over JJ.
Trade for Mac Jones, dont waste Jefferson or Addison's time left. Throw in overpaid hockenson in the trade. The viikes have the talent to compete in the playoffs.
They were primed last year Darnold just struggled since it was his first time leading a team to the playoffs but boy did they 💩 the bed on this one
The Vikings will sign Mac Jones this off-season.
JJ has been in the league 2 years and he’s the same age as the QB class coming out this year. He’s really young, that’s why I think he’s going to end up figuring it out. He’s got the arm talent and athleticism. This is mental
Just imagine these guys were in control of a team they would’ve never been a oeyton manning, john elway, steve young, aaron rodgers, etc. they were horrid there rookie season. Elway was benched but they would’ve given up on them.
JJ sucks. If he’s that much work then he can go play in the CFL.
Viqueens have to release jj n start over
Here is a list of qbs who played better than jj Mccarthy according to pff
Ryan leaf
Zach Wilson
Tim tebow
Johnny manziel
Josh Rosen
Trey lance
When you cant have a baseline level of competency above these names theres nothing to develop n jj should be released n cut
Vikings need to cut him, then resign him and let KOC work his magic
He never had to read a defense at scUM, he had Connor Stalions doing that for him for the three seasons he was in Ann Arbor. Not to mention his goofy throwing motion caused significant inaccuracy even when receivers are wide open, just as he’s doing now. He was in above average at best college player and doesn’t belong in the NFL.
Brosmer just has to spike the ball 20 times and he'll still end up with a better rating lmao.
JJ is privately coached by the esteemed Greg Holcomb, check out his bio 🥴🤫🤔
Imo, you are wasting A LOT of money on your receivers, especially Jefferson, if you are just going to wait n wait n wait on JJ to develop. Just my opinion 🤷
Dude crapping on alter egos is gold. 😂
Consistently being injured doesn't excuse his problems because he hasn't had the experience. That is a major factor in the bust package. If you can't stay healthy, there is no point in anything else.
Of course Nine is sitting out against my Seahawks, there goes the east win
Max has to play
4:30 DAMN RIGHT BRUCE ARIANS!!
Start the backup QB, let's see what happens, sit JJ on purpose this week, start getting ready for next season, JJ has a lot of work to do
The whole nine and that creepy video of him reacting to the coach talking about him is kinda strange.
Why not ever talk about the drops? Hockenson's been doing it, and JJ and Addison have as well.
Ask those pundits that said J.J. would be better than Bo Nix should be fired.
They should sign Cousins 😂
Dan Quinn has lost the locker room. Watch. I said it first. Redskins fan forever. Go Commanders.
This show is so damn funny 😂😂😂
I know Dan tried to spin it in a positive light but JJ being below expectations and needing more development is a glaring issue.
I understand that he has been hurt but he’s been sitting on the bench for two years and getting practice reps for two years. He should know this system inside and out and KOC should know his strengths.
The fact that neither of these are true is a sign of JJ’s maturity and work ethic. If he is this raw and panicked then he isn’t a NFL caliber quarterback.
You know you're a bad QB when Dan Orlovsky is digging on you
Funny how Caleb Williams was excorticated for his lack of fundamentals coming from college and yes I know he was the #1 overall pick. But they're basically saying JJ doesn't even have basic proper mechanics and he's generally looked terrible. Where's all the national media hate for him?
