27 Years Ago the Jerome Bettis Coin Toss Controversy Happened
November 27, 2025
Lost in all the furor over where the Steelers currently are as a franchise and in the standings, let's not forget the anger this coin toss caused 27 years ago.
Was Bettis at fault, or was Phil Luckett to blame?

Damn … just realized how old I am
The Bus was not to blame
AKA the reason why they no longer call the coin toss in the air
I know we were screwed over on that, but all I remember thinking at the time was “why are we even going to overtime” against a bad Lions team. We still have issues against teams we should dominate, you know like…not attacking the backup Bears linebackers over the middle!
Damn I’m old
May Phil Luckett choke on bags of dicks every Thanksgiving
That’s just the NFL script
I feel like I remember this and I was like 11mo old lmao. Weird
I was so mad. Didn’t win a game the rest of the year
It was the day I decided to root for this hapless franchise. No joke, it was like four years later that I realized the Steelers were one of the most successful teams. I just watched Sportscenter and enjoyed Bill Cowher. My first favorite player was Jerome Bettis. Then it was Troy Polamalu, which worked out well. Then it was Cam Heyward. I’m really nervous about what happens when he leaves.
We are closer to 2050 than this. That makes me sad.
