[Passan] Right-hander Dylan Cease and the Toronto Blue Jays are in agreement on a seven-year, $210 million contract, pending a physical, sources tell ESPN. The defending American League champions get one of the best arms on the free agent market.

  1. $30m AAV until his age 37 season. Would you have been fine with the cubs giving this contract?

  2. Puts him right in between mookie betts and crochet for per year money. I’m fine with not paying a 30 year old pitcher that for 7 years

  3. Do you hear that? It’s the sound of Lucas Giolito’s agent phone ringing from a panicking Jed Hoyer

  4. We will never be a serious big market team if the owners won’t swim in the deep end AND our fans also shy away from these contracts. The market is the market and the cost to play is only going to go up.

  5. I don’t know what to think about him because his numbers have him as the player version of the 2010s SF Giants. Even years? Champions. Odd years? Big pile of meh. I feel like there’s better out there but we won’t pay for it just like we didn’t pay for this (honestly don’t know if I would’ve wanted to choose him because of the inconsistency and lack of going deep in games).

  6. everyone saying they are okay not paying this much for this long of a deal for a guy already xx years old, but thats what free agency is.

you have to pay players to be competitive. is 7/210 insane for a 30 yo pitcher? the simple fact of the matter is five years ago it was; nowadays, its a toss up? which is what every free agency move is at the end of the day. are you signing a harper or a rondon?

at the end of the day, everyone running torontos organization saw their team progress after locking down their centerpiece for his career (if they choose to keep him that long), and is now IMMEDIATELY making moves to get better now that they see potential. we are in a very similar position (even if we didnt go as far) and are playing the same old song and dance. im so sorry but this is THE definition of insanity. doing the same things and expecting different results.

  7. Based on this, you think Ranger Suarez (who is 1 year older) would do 150/6 (25 per year, signed through 36). Maybe 160?

  8. This is the market, every offseason it’s like this.

You have to give players money if you want their services, there’s no getting around that.

  9. Good for Dylan tbh. Not going to be a doomer. Plenty of other available players. Long offseason etc. still don’t expect anything but they have surprised before with their moves so

  10. During the season Cubs fans bitch and moan that Ricketts is too cheap. Then the offseason comes and free agents go for more money than the year before and those same fans applaud the Cubs for not signing them. It’s been the same song and dance for years now.

Edit: There’s deferrals to make it around $26M a year, holy crap we’re cooked.

  11. The Cubs were never going to make an offer like that to Cease, so no reason to care about it. This signing does make Tuckers free agency more interesting though.

  12. I’m going to be unrealistically optimistic and say this is good because now the Blue Jays are out on Bichette.

  13. Plenty of other arms out there I’d be fine with at a lower cost. That being said, I don’t expect much.
