[Passan] Right-hander Dylan Cease and the Toronto Blue Jays are in agreement on a seven-year, $210 million contract, pending a physical, sources tell ESPN. The defending American League champions get one of the best arms on the free agent market.

  1. If Cease can find some consistency, this is an incredible deal. The problem is the consistency, he can still strike out batters even in a down year – but he also gets hit hard too.

    2022 – 2.20 ERA
    2023 – 4.58 ERA
    2024 – 3.47 ERA
    2025 – 4.55 ERA

Gonna be interesting, that’s for sure.

  2. Wow, wasn’t expecting that long of a deal. Yeah he’s durable and has good stuff but he’s been very inconsistent at best the past few years

  3. Ben Clemens of Fangraphs predicted him at 5/155. So Jays paid the premium in years, it seems. Someone was going to have to, and it makes at least as much sense for them as for anyone.

FG had him as the #3 free agent (behind Tucker and Bregman, ahead of Valdez and Bellinger)

  4. His peripherals have always been great and his FIP (much better predictor of future ERA) is consistently in the low 3s. Amazing signing for the Blue Jays

  5. Didn’t think we’d get him but this is a great signing! Rogers is bringing out the $$$

  6. Dylan Cease is insanely mid. 30M per year for SEVEN years? The dude had 1 WAR last season. What the actual heck is going on with the pitching market? He was great the year before, and still got lit up by the Doyers in the first round. This is gonna be an ALBRATROSS

  7. high risk, medium ish reward type deal. if he realizes his potential and is consistent, they’re still paying him 30 million per season. and if he’s a dud, then that’s a big anchor for a long time

  8. When he’s on, he’s elite. Only problem is that when he’s off…oof. Hope he can find consistency with the Jays

  9. That is so much more money and years I thought he was going to get. Hope he does well in Toronto.
