Shesterkin Saves 36 In Rangers Road Win In Carolina | New York Rangers
On a night that will make tomorrow’s feast so much more digestible, the Rangers cook up a tasty 60 minutes in Raleigh and hold off a feverish hurricane rally in period 3. 42 the final. Rangers with the win in Carolina. Hi everyone, welcome to the Mercedes-Benz Rangers postgame show inside the Delta MSG studios alongside Dave Maloney. I’m John Gianown. So many different places to go, but start with this. The Rangers now the first and only team in the NHL with double-digit road wins this year, now 10 on the season. You know, it was just kind of we talked about the grit that this Ranger team plays with. Now, their grit was topped off with some nice offensive plays here tonight, but the goalender battled when he had to battle. The penalty kill did a tremendous job at 1-1. So, a lot of those situations where this game could have turned. Now listen, the shot totals are what they’re going to be playing against Carolina. There’s no question. They load them up. Load them up. In the meantime, you know what? You take a really solid win into Thanksgiving off of this victory tonight in Carolina. Yeah, the shot total was 3718, but the goal differential was plus two for the Rangers. And a huge goal that was scored came 45 seconds into the third period. Rangers holding a onegoal lead, but within the first minute, Vincent Troche made it two. Yeah, there were so many things good that happened on this goal when it comes to fundamental stuff, right? And it really starts in the defensive zone. We talk about protecting your zone and then making the one play up ice. Mika’s advantage right there with that little bump up the wall pass execution. Paneran now heads up right coming off the bench is going to be Troche. Now Paneran’s game is he’s going to go east west to the blue line. He goes west. All four Carolina guys are paying attention to him. Step four here, Miller drives through the middle of the ice. That creates more space for Troche and somebody’s got to bury it. And that’s Vincent Troche, the ex Carolina Hurricane. And that was a big goal and it was wonderfully wonderfully executed. Yeah, for Troche. Now, five goals in 11 games since he returned after missing 14 games for the Rangers. So this was a night where the Rangers had nine players with at least one point. One player had more than one and it was our Timmy Panaran. You saw the assist. He scored a goal with 64 seconds left in the second period and it allowed the Rangers to take a one-goal lead into the third. You know, you often hear about set plays in hockey, right? And I’m not sure in our era there was ever a set play, but the way things are scouted and videoed now, this is a terrific faceoff win. Now Panaran takes a quick move in off the face off bumps bumps aole away and then swings out. Now in the meantime, you’ve got to have somebody in the right point and that’s going to be Fox get the bump from Miller. Fox has the vision. We talked about Fox’s ability to capture the picture before anybody else sees it. Buries it short side. That was a huge goal at the end of the second period. a wonderfully wonderfully once again set play off a faceoff win and our Tammy Paneran who had not been overly visible to that point but it doesn’t matter. You get yourself a goal, a couple goals, assists and your hockey team wins. Yeah, you described it as a wonderful night. Wonderful job there by Joe Beans Biancowski with the spotlights and the spot shadows and the targets to really kind of take you inside how those two goals were scored. At the other end of the ice, Igoria Sturken stood up and did the job tonight. and he gets another win, second straight for him. Five wins now in his last seven and he was called upon when needed and got a little bit of luck from three posts as well. Well, there’s there’s no question and you would never ever apologize for a goalender stealing a hockey game because the Rangers simply put early in the season were victimized by opponents goending and in the meantime this to me that that was his best save of the night in the first period. No score in the hockey game. That’s Blake comes across, darts out the left hand, does Shurken from there on. Now he’s got to be aware of traffic coming, which is Carolina’s game once again. Oh, shocker. Caroline right right on top of of Shurken. He stands tall in that position. That’s a right pad save off a one-time in the power play from Fetchnikov. Once again, drive the net right on top. So you see where he when he has to be aggressive, he is aggressive upright, gets down in the squat position after getting a sighteline on that particular play. Igor Shurken was simply terrific. Yeah, 37 shots against the most he’s faced in a game this year. 35 saves, the second most he’s made in a game this year. 4-2 Rangers the final. Let’s begin the reaction inside the visiting dressing room, the winning room with Vincent Trochek. Yes. How hard is it to kind of keep your um you know, keep positive vibes when you look at the shot clock, the shot counter, and it’s they’re just racking a piling up shots. I know they’re I know their game, so it’s they’re a high shot volume team. They shoot from everywhere. You can’t let the the shot clock fool you a lot of times in this building. Um there’s definitely games where where they dominate teams and have a lot of shots, but there’s also games where they have a lot of shots. And I I think in the first period they were up shots on a 6 nothing or something at the halfway point to one at one point. Yeah. And I thought we were we were dominating pace of play. So um you can’t let that bother you. You mentioned the third just what did you like about your team’s ability to you know close it out. I think it was just we started just playing a better style of hockey. I thought we were on top of them a little bit a little bit more in the neutral zone. Um we were turning pucks over. We’re getting pucks deep. We started um getting a cycle game going in the third period. I think our fourth line started that for us. Um, cycling pucks in their end, keeping keeping possession. So, just more of that. Seems like faceoffs were a big thing, too. I mean, you you know, they score a goal off a faceoff. You guys score a goal off a face off. I mean, I think you had the edge last I looked in terms of percentage wise. Yeah, they’re a good faceoff team. Always are. thought Rodyy’s good coach for or that style of hockey and that part of the game, but um I’m biased, but I think faceoffs are always a pretty big part of the game. Did you like the way you played below the goal line in terms of creating offense down low? Yeah, I think more so in the third period than in the second and first, but uh that’s what I was telling Molly, just if we can continue to to grind teams down a little bit more and get that forch check game going, it just takes the wind out of their sales a little bit more. Yeah, Rangers now seven and0 this season when leading after two periods and thanks to Paneran they were doing just that. You heard Vincent Troche talk about that third period we played a better style of hockey. We were turning the puck over less pucks deep cycle game and he credited the fourth line for starting it all. But did that seem to you like the kind of third period as we talked about after two that they needed to play against this team? Well, there’s no question and but to me I think he missed the threesome that was the catalyst and that was the lava line all night long. They were quick. They were on top of Carolina and that kind of energy seemed to galvanize the per into the third period. There’s no question there was an important shift from the Carrick line, but all night long that Lava line was terrific in the offensive zone. They were quick, they were hard on pucks, and that allows then it kind of it’s like body punches that allows a little more open ice for your skilled players, right? So, I I really do credit the Labal line with a terrific night. Also, well, JT Miller had an assist on the goal by Paneran that made it 2-1. Let’s hear from the captain of the Rangers after the win. Now, it’s the second win in a row. Obviously, uh you know, people were talking about getting back to the way you were playing earlier in the season. Do you feel like you were able to do that these last two games? Um I I wasn’t part of the Blues game, but I know the guys played a really nice game. Like, it was really detailed and played hard. You know, it’s funny when you like today, I don’t think we were at our best, but we found a way to win and I thought our third was our best period. Um, you know, it’s funny. You go out through the first 15 games of the year, how many games we thought we should have won, how they kind of, this is one of those that hopefully can help even some of those out. You know, it’s a really good team. You know, they play right in your face on on top of you. And it’s no surprise they’ve done it for so long. And I think they played a little quicker than us, you know, for majority of the game, but I thought in the third we started to play behind them and held on to pucks and, you know, had our best period. Um, and then when we did have some breakdowns, Chesty played unreal. So, uh, yeah, that was it. So, so when you when you are looking at the the shot totals, you know, up up at the board like that, I mean, what’s it like when you just keep seeing them piling up shots on goal? Well, it’s Yeah, it’s not a big deal. Like, sometimes it is, but I mean, you’re this team is notorious for just shooting everything, right? So, I mean, they’re a team that’s going to outshoot you most nights just cuz they go low to high and shoot every single puck. And, you know, in the first five, eight minutes of the game, I thought we actually played really well. We were in their face, but I think we have one shot through there. It just nothing really hit the net. So, like don’t get lost in that sometimes. you know, I feel like you can over overthink the shots, especially a team like this, like I said, is just putting every single thing at the net. Um, but you know, we just got to we can’t worry about that. I thought we could do a little better job of playing faster, but that being said, like I that’s a good hockey team. They were they were on top of us for most of the night, but we found a way to dig in the third and, you know, stepped up and got it done, which all that matters. We’re not going to get a chance to talk to our team, but what do you think of this performance tonight? Made some plays. Um, obviously it’s a it’s a big goal at the end of the second, you know, on the road having that lead going in. It gives you all that a little bit more confidence, especially like I said, but I don’t think we had our best. Um, and then in the third, that’s a big time play. I think he had two or three guys on them. And that’s what he’s capable of. You know, those are those are situations where we need need us guys to step up and make a play right there to give us a little breathing room in that game. And that’s what he did. And, you know, it was nice to see him make some plays. Where did you find the door open for you in the third period to take control of the game? Uh well in between the periods in between second and third if we sat back and tried to play D against them all period that would have been a nightmare. Like we knew we had to be aggressive and you know our game no matter what the score is is a good game. Like we need to play direct and struct in structure aggressive within our structure and it’s a good hockey game. We should have people being responsible for other people and I thought we did a good job of hemming them below the hash marks and making them play our game for a little bit. I wish we would have, you know, I know we wish we would have played a little bit more like that through the first two periods, but that was the game we wanted to try to play and just took too many penalties today. I think it was really hard to get in a rhythm. Um, you know, when it’s was it five or six to one probably and so I mean that that doesn’t help the rhythm for sure, but I think like I said, we just grinded in the third and found a way to win, which is really good sign of the team. Did you like the way your transition happened? Uh, yeah. Just Well, that’s just part of it. It’s like they’re trying to do the same thing to us. It’s who can get it up quicker and get behind them quicker. Like if you play slow and they’re just on top of you, they’re going to, you know, both teams are trying to do the same thing. So I thought it was better in the third. Grinded in the third, said JT Miller. Igor Schurken grinded the whole night. 35 saves now 98 and two. Rangers have 26 points in 25 games after the 4-2
Artemi Panarin had 2 points, including a goal in the Rangers 4-2 win over the Hurricanes in Carolina. His other point was an assist to Vincent Trocheck who netted what would be the game winning goal. They were lucky to win this game. You're not a competitor if you're consistently getting under 20 shots per game.
Maloney has had a few too many concussions. What grit is he talking about, they are horrendous and in last place in their division.
“right” Dave “right” Meloney…. Dave, you sound “right” like an amateur speaker. Stop it, get some help!
The nice way to enjoy thanksgiving rangers 😝 what food you have for me for this centennial season 😝 any 1920s foods 😝
Trochek is always an honest, forthright interview. Doesn't give those robotic, pat responses. And his tone is authentic. Don't see that too much these days in any sport, with coach-speak and player-speak.
This was a good win by the Rangers against an excellent team. The Rangers played the more effective North South game and not the East West style of Laviolette.
