NIKITA TOLOPILO IS A MONSTER: VANCOUVER CANUCKS DEFEAT THE ANAHEIM DUCKS
Well, it’s been a while. For the first time in 10 days, the Vancouver Canucks have won themselves a hockey game. Vancouver’s last win came on November 16th against the Tampa Bay Lightning. 6-2 victory for Van on the road. It was a really nice explosion of goals that led to the victory on that night. And today it’s the Anaheim Ducks, the happiest place on earth, the happiest team in the Pacific Division. Vancouver took on Anaheim with, I’d say, reasonably low expectations. I don’t think a lot of Canucks fans were expecting the Conucks to win this one considering the injuries, considering the narratives, but the Canucks ultimately win 54. And get this, the game-winning goal was an empty netter. So there you go. They had the opportunity to get another empty netter, but we’ll talk about that a little bit later. All the narratives about this Conucks contest heading into the frame were down in the dumps. And I think you can say that a win like this against Anaheim should not be enough to totally flip everything up on its head. It’s not like, oh, the Canucks beat the Ducks 5-4. They’re going to be a contender again. We can start believing in them. That’s probably not the right way to go about it. But this was a game where Vancouver had Nikita Toapilo in net. Of course, Lankin leave of absence. Demco still injured. It’s Tolapilo and Peter who are manning the Canucks crease. You also had rumors about Kefir Sherwood potentially getting traded. There was an article posted by Ian McIntyre where he discussed, hey, could this be the last game that Kefir Sherwood plays for the Vancouver Conucks? And I understand, you know, like the game is over. It’s not like Kefir Sherwood is guaranteed to being traded now, but that’s sort of where the mindset is for a lot of Vancouver Conucks fans and media and what have you. It’s all about the potential of movement. But in the midst of all of that, we can acknowledge, accept, and celebrate a Vancouver Canucks victory 5 to4 against the Anaheim Ducks because this one ultimately was one of these games where I think Vancouver, sure they may have gotten out chanced. Sure, they may not have had the amount, the quantity of offensive opportunities that the Anaheim Ducks had, but the chances that Vancouver had were pretty good. They didn’t have as many, but like they had opportunities after opportunities. And maybe some of these wouldn’t necessarily be reflected if you looked at Moneypuck, for example, but Vancouver had so many posts and crossbarss, chances where they were coming in, chances where they had open nets to shoot at but either didn’t shoot or fired it off the bar, breakaway chances that resulted in shots off the post. It was not an easy game for Vancouver in terms of converting on their opportunities, but they still were able to find a win. They had a two nothing lead in this one as well, which definitely made things a little bit interesting to open up the first period because it was like, hey, this is Anaheim we’re talking about. They’re a really good team. Are the Vancouver Conucks just going to hold on and win this one outright? Lionus Carlson got things going in the first period. All it took was 10 minutes. Arch Deep Baines does some incredible work to win the puck in the offensive zone. It gets sent back to the point. A shot is made. It’s tipped by Saon and Lionus Carlson on the rebound back door is able to bury it in. No assist for Baines because the puck was tipped on the way through. But Carlson, Sassin, and Baines are putting on display the talent that allowed them to be such a strong line in the Abbottzford system last year. It’s just, hey, this time around, they kind of have to do it against better competition. Making it two nothing was a Vander Kane right off the faceoff on the power play for Vancouver. Tom Vlander gets the puck back over to her. He sends it over to Vellander again. He finds Kane who then shoots and scores. buries it by Peter Morazzic. That’s Evander Kane’s fourth goal of the season. Could this also be the last game he plays as a member of the Vancouver Conucks? There have been some trade rumors linking him to Edmonton. Who really knows? The second period though, this is where Anaheim started to come alive. Jackson Lome gets a power play goal 9 seconds into the frame. Anaheim is able to get to a loose puck, dash into the Kuck zone. It finds itself back over to the point where Lome waits. He takes and he beats Toolo clean. Admittedly, you look at the amount of chances that Anaheim had in this game. They kind of deserve to have already had at least a goal. So, them scoring one in the power play to open up period 2. Not the biggest steal in the world, but still not the result the Canucks wanted there. Give it about 10 minutes and you have Connor Garland who scores one of the most beautiful goals we have seen out of a Kuck all season. Garland centers it for Besser who comes in on the fast break with some speed. He then stops up, throws it to Garland who dangles the pants off of Drew Ellison and he goes forehand towrag to the backhand and then he multiplies it by two and goes forehand backhand again on Peter Morazzic. What a nasty goal scored by Connor Garland to waltz right by the D and the goalie. Shades aka Sherwood on Matias Echholm and the Edmonton Oilers a few weeks ago, but then the Anaheim Ducks come back. Leo Carlson scores a really nice backhander in tight. It is off of a rebound chance where admittedly Troy Terry kind of stopped to from being able to reenter the frame. I thought there could have been goalie interference on that, but ultimately there wasn’t any called tool made the save. He was down and out and the puck was freed out into the center area. And then 2 minutes after that, Mason McTavish scored on a pretty nice twoon-one opportunity by the Ducks. Really good patience and passing by Becket Senica to outweight the Dman and just get it by, get the pass through and find McTavish. beat the last man back who on this play was Tyler Myers. Yeah, Tyler Myers getting caught back on two ones. Name a better duo. But Anaheim walks into the third period with the momentum because it’s a tie game 3-3 until Max Esone gets a tip 15 minutes into the third period after so many chances, so many posts, so many opportunities for the Vancouver Conucks. Brock Besser could have had like six goals in this one, but really he ends up with none. Phil Heronic throws the puck towards the front of the goal and it’s Max Sasson who is in front. He is behind Jackson Lome. He gets a tip on the puck. It then goes off of number 14 Drew Helison and in by Peter Morazzic. There was a brief moment where he thought Kefir Sherwood might have had the last touch in it, but no, it’s just a clean goal that goes off of Sasson Sik. It goes off the goalie and then it goes off of the defenseman in front and in. You then have Drew O Connor scoring the empty net goal assisted by Elas Person until Cutter Goceier brings the Ducks within one one more time with six seconds to go. It was a pretty tight play. The Anaheim Ducks were pressing. They did get one final rush into the offensive zone with 6 seconds left. Although they weren’t able to capitalize on it, Vancouver walks away with a win. And honestly, I’m having a difficult time trying to I don’t know what the word is. It’s like I don’t necessarily want to review the game because I think at this point I don’t know if Kucks fans really want that. I know there are a lot of Kucks fans that were looking at this California road trip and saying things like, “Hey, in the past Vancouver has had tanking efforts spoiled by these California road trips where they go over to Cali and they start winning games, bettering their regular season standings and worsening their playoff odds. It’s happened pretty frequently over the past few years, and now it’s like, huh, are they going to do it again? Are the Vancouver Conucks, who are one of the worst teams in the National Hockey League the past few weeks over here, are they actually going to start winning consistently against these California teams? Is that going to continue to push them into the mushy middle? You could say that, oh, the injuries were the biggest problem, but hey, they’re still injured. It’s not even Thatcher Demco was told today, who, by the way, I’d say was really strong. He let in four, but like just considering the quantity of opportunities in Anaheim pressing, I mean, this guy was totally a beast. So many opportunities on the power play thwarted by Nikita Toapilo. Vancouver’s PK actually did do some things right in this one. They weren’t perfect, mind you. Anaheim was one for six on the man advantage in this one. But ultimately, it’s a good night for Nikita Toapilo. It’s a good night for Abbottzford, guys. Casson, Baines, Carlson, and Tolapilo all getting some pretty good results. Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below about this Conucks win over the Anaheim Ducks. I hope you enjoyed this Switzer 99 and bye.

Is there anything more Canuck than losing to the last place team at home and then beating the 1st place team 2 days later on the road?
great start – now histrory is repeating itself – 1 win does not account 4 15 losses!
So they go on a losing streak, losing to the worst in the league. Then wins against one of the best of the league on the road 🙃 can we have any consistency of play?
What about the Canuck power play how many games with at least one goal?
Buble was right good job Michael
