Big-Name NFL Coach on the Move… to the Falcons? Chuck & Chernoff Connect the Dots

Chuck, if this is true, I think this could alter the Falcons coaching plans in the most unexpected way. Right now, we only have one NFL job opening that belongs to the New York Giants, who fired Brian Dable. But I’m going to read you a Josina Anderson tweet that tells me where we’re headed. And I take Josina’s word or don’t. I mean, I’ve heard some good and bad. Maybe hit some, maybe she hasn’t. But she tweeted this. Keeping tabs as we approach carousel season, league sources are eyeing five more NFL teams with projected openings at head coach as of where things stand today while waiting to collect more data on a sixth team, too. But here’s where it gets interesting. Meanwhile, there’s a longtime NFL head coach out there who’s considering wanting a change of scenery and has told others of these thoughts. If he acts on these lingering feelings, his departure would clearly add to the list of vacancies. All right, let’s focus on that second part because every year we have we have five or six openings every year. It’s just part of it. So, I started to try to think about longtime successful head coaches who would want a change of scenery. It’s not Andy Reid. We’re well beyond that. Andy’s going to finish out his time with the dynasty he’s built with the Chiefs. I don’t think it’s John Harbaugh because I assume at this point he has more vacation days than anybody else in the NFL and why start over. I’m kidding. But he’s built what he wants. He’s there. I don’t think it’s Mike Tomlin for the same reason it’s not John Harbaugh. You kind of you know what you know and you’re there and you’re going to finish it up there. Mike Tomlin is feeling under unappreciated. I think he always kind of feels that way and I think there’s a lot of fan base who is tired of that we just get to the playoffs and won a Super Bowl. I want to tell them welcome to my life in Atlanta but the story for another day. Then it brings me to Shawn McVey and I think that’s interesting, but I I don’t think Shawn wants a change of scenery. Shawn McVey is built for LA. He’s gorgeous. He’s still young. He can go right into the TV world from there. So, I don’t I don’t think he’s the guy. Plus, they’re likely to have a top 10 pick that they can use to replace Matt Stafford if they choose. You’re doing the football things. And you’re right. So, that brings me to two options. One of them is Kyle Shanahan and the other is a name I brought up before from a call I got on on a head coach to watch and that’s Matt Laflur. Kyle Shanahan has been with the Niners now. This is his seventh season. He’s had really good success. He’s been to a couple of Super Bowls. We know with that play sheet in his hand, if you remove the fact that, you know, he’s Judas, he is just a differencemaker unlike very few we’ve ever seen in the league. Matt Laflur is kind of and I’m gonna say this and it’s not insulting. Kind of a poorish man’s Kyle. He’s really good, but I know Green Bay fans do the thing we all do of like we haven’t won enough with him and we get to the playoffs and we don’t win. Whatever. That’s a thing they’d know more about than me. But if one of those two dudes lets it be known they want out and want a change of scenery. If I’m the Falcons and I’m on the fence at all, which I don’t know why you would be, hell yes, you make the move and you get on the horn as quickly as possible back channeling it to tell either guy we’ll pay you whatever you need. We’re going to make you the next head coach. You’re going to get autonomy. It’s your offense. You do whatever you want. Come here and you get to be the king of all kings for running the Atlanta Falcons. Those two, if they want out, jump on it. She may be right about this and it still doesn’t happen. It It’s I mean, the the description there, and like I said, we don’t know if this is accurate or not. So, we’re trying to flesh out. A we don’t know if it’s accurate. B, even if it is accurate, the guy may not decide to follow through on that. So, it’s real hard to pin this down. Don’t breeze past Mike Tomlin. I would I would want to include him on that list. In fact, he would be pretty close to the top of my list. Um, not necessarily to come coach Atlanta, but to be done in Pittsburgh, I think so. Maybe. I guess nothing. He’s got his title. He’s had a lot of winning way more than a minute there. But when you’re at a place that long, has Mike been there 15 years? Oh, yeah. after cow or quit after the what the Seahawks game was. It is hard to go somewhere else and and think things are going to look the same, feel the same. I I wonder how much that’s ever happened where somebody like Bellichic had he come to Atlanta after New England would have been one of the short list options. I think Andy Reid had been with the Eagles for probably a decade and then he went to Kansas City. So I wouldn’t rule it out, but I think these other two are more likely. And here’s why. Shann’s ornery. Shanny wears out his welcome. Shanny gets tiring. But you know what? you look past his ornery attitude and his like RBF because the fact he’s such a differencemaker with a play sheet in his hand, he makes everybody better. I’ve heard the same about Laflur. I’ve heard now I don’t know if this is true, but I was told that when the Falcon offensive coordinator job came open after Shanny left that Matt Ryan did not want Matt Laflur. I don’t know if that’s been verified or true or anybody knows more, but I heard that. So Laflur apparently can be a little spicy, too. And my response is, I don’t care. I don’t need you to be everybody’s best friend in the building. I want to have some buttoned up operation to run very well. Can I give you a wild card that people are going to poo on and I know it. You social media people, you’ll poo all over it. I would not have a problem with Kevin Stfansky at all. That guy won 11 games twice with the Cleveland Browns. I know a lot of the rest of it’s been bad, but that’s a poorly run organization on a lot of fronts that sometimes he’s not going to be good enough to overcome. But I know he was really good with a play sheet. I know he took a very chaotic organization and as I said won double digit games in two of his six seasons, whatever the amount of time he’s been there. That one would go over like a fart and church for a lot of Falcon fans. Why are you getting a failed Browns coach? My response is people think a lot of Kevin Stansky’s offensive mind, his ability to run a team and again he knows about working in a chaotic unprofessional atmosphere and made the most of it. Guys get injured, you can’t help it. It’s just what it is. But if you look at Kyle at San Francisco right now, he has a really good defense under contract. Some of it’s hurt. A lot of it’s hurt. Again, Fred Warner, not to name one, they they’re always hurt, but he’s got the right guys there. So, whatever. And I have a fluctuating opinion about Brock Perie. I don’t know. I see him throw three picks against the Panthers. I think a little less of him. Do you have one? Because he doesn’t play enough for me to have one anymore. He’s been hurt and now he’s he’s as expensive as anybody else. So, it’s not like this super cheap contract. So, if Kyle does not have a fluctuating opinion about him, if Kyle thinks I have a quarterback here, whoever it is, Andy has those guys under contract on defense, I would take Kyle off that list as well. Is he ornery? Sure, but that’s just Kyle. I I don’t need you to win the press conference. I don’t need you to be gregarious with the media. There’s a reason why, and not I don’t know what Bellich would have done here, but there’s a reason why Bill’s not here. It has to do more with his personality. It has more to do with his want to turn things over. Bet your backside if Kyle comes in here. He knows what worked and didn’t work here. He’ll come in here and turn everything over. If he was to take a job like this one out of San Francisco and say, “All right, what are the what are the keys to me taking it? That guy’s gone. This guy’s gone. This GM I want I want to remember, he handpicked John Lynch. Like this is Kyle would want his show if he’s coming here.” I’d agree with you. And if he were unemployed, I would I would consider this more. The Falcons have two quarterbacks and really don’t even have any. Kirk’s not a quarterback in the NFL. He’s not supposed to be right now. And Michael Penn, they’re not starting the season with him next year. They’re not. But you with Kyle and Michael Penn, I’ll bet on it. I will. That’s how much I think of Kyle. Kyle does things. He just made M. Jones, he made Matt. Jones good enough. He’s done that wherever he’s been. And then he got Matt Ryan here and went went MVP quality with him. I mean, that’s what I said about Brock. Brock Pery shouldn’t have been a thing. N Kyle made him a thing. It’s what he does.

Chuck & Chernoff, hosted by Chuck Oliver and Matt Chernoff, examine potential future coaching options for the Atlanta Falcons as head coach Raheem Morris continues to face pressure. Citing a report from Josina Anderson that as many as five teams could be searching for new head coaches—plus a sixth “mystery team” led by a long-tenured coach who may be seeking a change—the hosts begin evaluating possible candidates.

They explore several notable names who could fit the description, including 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, and Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski. Chuck notes that several of these coaches would represent significant upgrades for the Falcons should they become available.

  1. You guys please tell me he lost your ear when he suggested Kevin Stafanski… nothing has looked good from him ever! Ever! “Oh he won coach of the year” who cares! This guy walked out more QBs than any other coach in a tenure and still have qb issues.. so I will for the rest of his career never listen to a word he says. And this chat need to be destroying this take

  2. The Falcons are good enough on defense especially to go 8-9, outside chance of 9-8. If they win 8 games Arthur Blank will not fire Raheem Morris, why? one he like Raheem, 2 since he has bought the club only once has he fired a coach after 2 years, Dan Reeves but he didn’t hire Reeves. If the team ends up 7-10 depending on how bad the remaining loses are maybe? But even at 7-10 he probably gives him another year. Now if we don’t win another game at 4-13 yeah he probably gets fired I know the GM gets fired you can’t go 5 years without making the playoffs.

  3. Falcons are many years away. They do not even have a QB capable of winning big. Penix will NEVER last an entire season. Fontenot you are the biggest little silliest clown in the room. From Pitts to Penix are you really this effing out of your league??

  4. Kevin Stefanski's hell nah. WE have a habit of hiring coaches from failed programs. How about we hire a coach that has success. Plus Kevin dropped the ball having Gabriel start over Shedeur. Hell naw to Stefanski

  5. All this John Gruden talk is insane. He has a litigation case against the league and even he doesnt meaning not open, why would you want some one who was revealed to be a bigot from the Washington Commanders debacle. Be smart people. We are already cursed in this city with a bad football team. Born and raised here in Atlanta. So sick and tired of delusionalism in this city.

  6. Kyle shanahan is not going anywhere !! He loves 49ers , and San Francisco and they love him !! Matt Lafauer is more believable ! My coworkers Wife went to school with his wife and they're good friends and says she do not enjoy the cold winters of Wisconsin !!

  7. Also, and premier HC would want McKay gone. Blank won’t let that happen. Probably that same request kept Belichik from ATL, for better or worse. So we will only get a mid tier HC due to the Falcons power structure.

  8. Who would wanna come to this organization with no first round pick next year and a QB who looks like he came back from Vietnam???? And as far as shanahan!!!!! This man cost us a Superbowl….so yaaaaaa bring his ass back
