Welcome to a Thanksgiving edition of Lockdown Stars. The Lockdown Podcast Network, now the number one sports podcast network. The Dallas Stars cap off their 4game road trip with a 3 to2 victory over the Seattle Kraken and take seven of the possible eight points on the trip. We’re going to break it down. The Stars have checked off the Thanksgiving check mark. Of course, that is very important in the NHL. If you are in the playoffs at this point of the season, more than likely, you will remain there by the end of it. And Jason Robertson has to be on Team USA, right? He’s not on the bubble. He has to be there. Let’s get into that and some questions floating around Team USA with the Olympics on the horizon as well. But let’s break down this 3-2 victory over Seattle. But first, I want to make a broad point about the the road trip as well for Dallas. Seven of the possible eight points. Ironically, the team they were defeated by was the worst team in the NHL, the Calgary Flames. But when they were down two to nothing, that was a good point. Although you had a five on three, you would have liked to bury the Flames and take the full two. But all in all, a wonderful road trip. But the broad point I want to make is I like how the Stars had to win a variety of different games in the four games outside of Calgary. But even in in the loss in overtime or the shootout, they still had to battle in a variety of different ways. Vancouver was really pacy. It was fast. The Stars needed their power play. They also needed Jakeer to be very, very sharp. He was excellent in the final two periods there in Calgary. The Stars trailed. We know how good they are trailing in hockey games. They were down two nothing. They battled their way back to get the game to overtime. They needed their big boys, Jason Robertson, Rope Hints to help out to earn a point. Then in Edmonton, it’s just a blowout. It’s an offensive explosion. Uh the the Stars go into Edmonton and just completely dominate a really really flat Oilers team. They won a lot of battles. They’re were really hungry along the walls. It was grimy, but they also had their will with Oilers net miners. And then last night was just a grinded out. Have to be engaged. It’s chaotic. You’re tired at the end of this trip. Seattle’s fresh. You’re just trying to hang on to a onegoal lead. They never relinquished the lead. Seattle tied it a couple of times, but the Stars never trailed, which was massive. Their PK was brilliant last night. They were five for five. Seattle had a a 4-minute power play right off the hop. It was textbook penalty killing from the Stars. Esselindelle was on the sheet for over three and a half minutes of that four-minute double minor to Alex Petravic who eventually took another penalty late in the game. The Stars were able to kill off. So, a variety of different games on the road trip, which is always a good sign of a good team. They can win in different ways. They can win on power play. They can win with the special teams battle via the PK. They can win the grinded out lowscoring games. They can beat you if they want to play a track meet. Uh just different varieties, different styles. That was a big takeaway from this road trip for Dallas, taking seven of the possible eight points. And last night was big. They were outshot 28 to 21. You could tell they were really tired at points and having to kill off as many penalties as they did uh did not help. And it was just a grindy grimy. They only two shots in in the third period. But I felt like they were in control of of the game for the most part. I felt like they were in control. They were sloppy with their puck possession early. That first period, they were just coughing the puck up way too much. It got better as the game went along, although I think they would like to be a bit better with their their management of the pill last night at points. I think there was some exhaustion and fatigue setting in to some of uh some of the individuals. I I think Kolio Chon who scored the game-winning goal as well. That’s that’s another thing on this road trip. Think of the the depth pieces for Dallas that that help get the job done. Nathan Bastion last night. Rich Scovian has had a great road trip. I mean, so is Beck and in and Bourke. Then you get Coio Chonach who was starting the year in Texas, rips one off the pipe and in it serves as a gamewinner. His first goal as a Dallas Star. just all different types, styles, individuals getting involved on the road trip and it was a real eyeopening trip I think for Stars fans in a lot of ways. They’re starting to find a rhythm. They seem to be comfortable in who they are is how I would sort of explain that. And I have no numbers to really back that up. It’s purely off the eye test. They just have a much more understanding, comfortability in what they’re trying to do. And I think that has been echoed by Glenn Gooson. The structure is there. Now it’s time to pray play free. And they seem to be playing free some of their best hockey. And I I I really really was impressed and in last night’s victory. It’s a team in Seattle coming in a bit fresher than you. did not play last night and Dallas was um was able to just hold on and uh go 300 and one on the road trip. Seattle was was he heavy, they were physical, they they were playing fast, but I felt like Dallas limited a lot of the looks uh for for Seattle. Um especially late um especially late. Early Seattle had some tasty opportunities, but late the starts didn’t really give him a ton. Uh and that that is that is um uh that is reflective in in the numbers. Only two scoring chances in the third period for Seattle at five on five only two and the Stars out chance them 18 to 14 out chanced them in the high danger area 10 to six they had a higher expected goals for it five on five um and in in the totality of the game in all situations the Stars had higher quality than Seattle. Uh, and I think that um is really symbolic of of who they are right now in a lot of ways. They may not get a ton of quantity, although it has started to increase a bit. Feels like they’re actually out chancing teams, outshooting teams. Um, but they are finding quality as well. They’re the best road team in the NHL. They are now 91 and three on the road. That is always a good sign of of a great team. We know that Stars historically over the last couple years have been great. I think the stat came out a couple days ago. They are the best road team since 2022. They just find ways to to win. And right now, the style under Glenn Doulson really elevates on the road how he wants the Stars to play. It has really elevated their road game and they’ve been fantastic. It’s winning those one-on-one battles, 5050 pucks along the walls. The forche for Dallas is strong. I uh I really enjoyed and am impressed in the willingness for the Stars to chip pucks in, get after it, wear down the opponent’s defense, force turnovers that way, hang on to pucks in the offensive zone, and score, right? Uh look at the Kolio Chonach goal. Uh that was just a beautiful, beautiful play by Jason Robertson and company. He drives the puck in down the near side wall. He spins back, creates time, hands off to Sean. Sean, Kappa, Biano, Sean back to Kolio Chonach. And he just whips it on net and they had Seattle swarming. It’s just a beautiful play in exchange. It was hence to Capabeno, Capioenko down to the wall to Sean. Seattle couldn’t match. They couldn’t get a man-on-man. And Kio Chonach, it’s a really good shot. There’s nobody in front outside of Kraken defenseman Larson who’s screening Joey Dor a bit, but it’s great puck movement. They have Seattle swarming. They don’t know who to match up with and it it leads to um a big- time goal uh you know late in the third period to uh to to to serve as the as the game winner. You know, Lindell scores a goal. A little scrum in front. Uh hence with a deflection. He he’s been great this year. He’s been awesome. seven points now or seven goals I should say uh this season he’s a point per game player. He really hasn’t missed a beat since he came back. He’s playing with Steel and Robo a bit. Stars are shuffling lines. It hasn’t been the most consistent but they like Sean with Ro and Robo right now. That’s been good. Johnston, Mo, and Ben starting to maybe get a rhythm. We’ll see if if that really sticks. I don’t think it’s the best combination for for Dallas. I I would like to see Ben a bit lower in the lineup to be honest. Maybe Steel gets a crack with a Wyatt and and Mo because that line was really good. Uh maybe maybe Ben could be dropped down. I think he could be really effective with a guy like Fox and Bastion. Although to be fair to Ben, I have liked his game. He has been spry so give him a bit to get his feet wet. He is coming off a collapsed lung. So maybe give him some time to to warm back up. Um, but uh really really really impressed. It’s a big win. It’s a great road trip and I’m a crucial one and uh the stars won a variety of ways. That’s my main takeaway. It’s a variet styles, different individuals getting involved. It’s a great trip. Let’s talk about Thanksgiving. Check mark always big in the NHL. Where do the stars sit? How do my predictions look from a couple of months ago at the beginning of the season? I’m going and enjoy talking hockey, of course. Uh thankful for the sport. Uh thankful to have a job in um in hockey. I mean, uh what more could you ask for? uh as a as a as a kid that grew up uh you know wanting to to do this um and be in sports uh can’t uh can’t ask for much more. Okay, Thanksgiving check mark is always a big deal, right? In the NHL, I think 86% or whatever the number is that are in the playoffs right now make the playoffs at the end of the year. So, let’s look at where the Stars are. Can they catch the Colorado Avalanche? I don’t think they’re going to lose the rest of of the year. This is very reminiscent of the Jets start last season where they what lost one game in their first like 20 games uh of of regulation. Stars at this point 24 games in 155 and four 34 points. They have a 708 uh point percentage. They’re 64-1 at home. They are 91 and3 on the road and 81-1 in their last 10. right behind him, sneaking up. Objects are closer than they appear in your mirror. The Minnesota Wild have won six straight. They’re 8-1 and one over the last 10. They’re right behind Dallas as well with 30 points. But Colorado is above Dallas, top of the league, 171, and five. The Stars are second in the league. They have a goal differential of plus 16. I think a month ago the Stars were negative and uh now they’re firmly in the positive with a couple of big games as well. A couple blowouts has helped them. The 7 nothing game or was it maybe 8 nothing? Could have been nine. I can’t even remember the Canadians final score and then the 8-3 thromping of the Oilers. So Dallas is right in the thick of things. I I think they have a great ch The fact that they’re even within striking distance is a good sign. the the Stars have a good opportunity to to catch Colorado. I would not bet on it. I don’t think they are. Colorado is deeper than they have been in the last couple years. You know, in a seven game series against who knows the Stars going into the last couple years, I think a lot of people thought Colorado would win those series to some degree. Uh maybe outside of last year, I thought it was pretty clear the stars were uh stars were clearly deeper, although they struggled at points in in the series and McKinnon and company um on the power play really really helped them out. But so the Stars, let’s let’s be frank, the Stars were power play merchants for most of their offense um during the postseason um as well. But it’s it’s obviously good spot to be in. uh better than being on the outside looking in. The stars are fine. Now, you look at my predictions, my eight playoff teams um in the West. It’s okay. It’s it’s not great. Obviously, I had Colorado, Dallas, and Minnesota. Well, Minnesota looked awful to begin the year. So, I was a bit uh bit befuddled by that, but they’re now formally entrenched, their top three in the Central. Uh you look at the two wild cards, Los Angeles, Utah. I had Los Angeles in the postseason. I did not have Utah. So, uh, that hurts. I think I also had St. Louis. They’re not going to make it. Vancouver, there’s still some hope there. Probably not going to make it. Uh, Winnipeg is awful now without uh without Hlebuck. I did have Winnipeg missing the postseason though, but that was with Helle, so without him maybe helps my my case a bit. Um, we’ll see how they sort of tread water. Edmonton is really struggling. Of course, the two teams that are in the postseason I did not have right now, Anaheim and Seattle. Um, and you could throw Utah in there. That’s a trio of teams, which I knew Utah could come back to bite me. I I I said that. Uh, I knew that could be uh an option. You know, Seattle’s playing well. Uh, you know, Dort’s great. I I think I think they’re going to be in the mix. I I at this point of year, I would think they make it just because Edmonton’s having issues. Utah’s a good team, but who knows if if that’s going to continue to to l I think Seattle has good pieces. Uh I I I like the makeup. I really do. They just got a I feel like they got a decent court. they can’t score enough um which uh that may not win them games in the postseason but they can be stingy which I think can get them there um and and if they get good enough goalending uh the Kings are right in the thick of things um I think right now if I look back at my I don’t have them on me unfortunately but I I sort of remember I know I had Colorado Dallas Minnesota those are my three teams in the central I think in that order um actually I may have had Dallas uh winning it. Um I had Los Angeles in there, so that’s four. Vegas, of course, five and the Kings, so six. So there’s a couple teams um I’m missing, of course. Seattle, Anaheim, uh you know, Anaheim, what what a start for them. We we’ll see if it lasts. We we see this a lot every year. There’s that surprise team that comes out and has a great first half and then they nose dive. Uh not saying that’s going to happen to Anaheim because the Ducks I I think are going to to finish it. I I think they’re just a good team. uh all those draft picks they’ve accumulated. They’re fun to watch. It’s good for the league. I think if the Ducks are good right now with the amount of young talent they have. So, uh I think they’ll be fine. They’re they’re good at home. Uh and uh they’ll be good. You know, Chicago in the mix is great. You know, Barding Company’s having a great year, right? We’ll kind of get to some of that Team USA talk as well. I know Bard’s team Canada, but uh in terms of Robertson sort of comparing the two in some ways, uh this is a great start for Dallas. Uh with all the injuries, I I I can’t sit here and and be critical of where Dallas sits right right now. I had decently high expectations coming to the year, but definitely reeled back from the last couple of seasons just with some of the moves, new head coach, then the injuries piled up. This is phenomenal. This is phenomenal. You get Duchain back healthy, Harley Lungquist, Labouchkin. Then you have a chance to go on a nice run second half. Hopefully Duchain will return and not have any effects. He worries me. He really does. It’s probably a a silver lining. Harley gets some rest. Lungquist as well. They need them healthy. They’re going to be big for Dallas moving forward, but look at the depth. I I say the depth isn’t I’ll say the ceiling isn’t as high for Dallas’s depth. I think that’s fair to say, but the depth can be just as effective, right? I don’t think the ceiling is as high as it was with a Marchman and maybe a Donov and some others, but the floor maybe has been raised and they can be just as effective. Ritzcovian Abort a steel I really shouldn’t disparage the depth the stars do have because they’ve been awesome playing in roles they probably shouldn’t be and they’re doing well a cappa bienko even they have their mistakes of course Kichonach as well they’re make some plays who are just okay what are we doing but Bishel and Petravic having really strong seasons and playing big moments right now and they have to play some big minutes and they’re playing um you know they’re playing in the thick of of this and against good teams, against good competition, right? It’s it’s not like the Stars are trying to shelter them. They need them um to play and be effective and they’re doing a wonderful job at that. And I think it’s no better example. There’s no better example than what Bastion did the last couple nights being a healthy scratch, seven of the last nine or seven last eight, whatever it was, and coming in scoring two goals, being effective, being ready, and producing. That’s what it’s all about. Um, so yeah, maybe the Stars ceiling is isn’t high in terms of goal production or whatnot, but they’re just as effective and um in making it happen for for Dallas. So, it’s a good thing, man. Stars catching Colorado may be tough, but the fact they’re within striking distance is um is amazing and they deserve a lot of credit for that. Let’s start Jason Robertson and Team USA because when you read things, it sounds like he’s on the bubble. He shouldn’t be on the bubble. He should be team USA. He should be the goalcorer and premier offensive player for Team USA. Right. Let’s get into that in just a moment. Today’s episode of Locked on Stars is brought to you by Monarch Money. So, the reason I wanted to bring up this segment is I was reading an athletic article by Pier Leon came out yesterday and the general manager of Team USA, Bill Garren, who has put together a pretty mediocre squad in in Minnesota. That’s a bit harsh to say with what they’ve done over the last couple of weeks or so, but let’s be honest, it isn’t the prettiest roster. I think Minnesota fans would say three weeks ago, this is just a really well or or really poor uh roster construction. That has nothing to do with Team USA. I get it. I’m just a bit bitter to some degree just because when he was asked about Robertson uh specifically there is a bit there’s a quote in here and it sounds like to me maybe I’m reading it too much like like Robertson’s on the bubble like he’s making a tough decision- which is is mindboggling to me. Team USA is is great. There there’s a I’ll say there’s a lot more players I would take over Robertson and and Team USA. Okay. There there are players I would take. I’ll just throw like a Jack Gel out there. But but Jason Robertson is the the best American right now at least at least in terms of point production. But let’s not forget he he he’s he’s not a liability defensively. So here was Garen’s uh question or answer about being asked about Robertson. Garren said he’s doing all he can. Yeah, he’s doing all he can by having a seven go game goal streak in like 11 in of his past six games. He’s doing all he can. He’s knocking down the door. Um anyways, and again, these are situations where I know guys want to make this team and guys want to be in this situation. There’s a number of players that we could take that we won’t end up taking because we won’t have the room. And when you look at it, there’s so many guys that are close in a way that they’re performing in the in their statistics and their body of work. It could come down to fit. What do we need? Well, I get there. I’m afraid now we’re we’re reverting back to this is going to be 90s. We’re going to be rough and tough. And that that’s fair. You’re going to need some of that. Uh but you need that also in like quality players like Kachchuck um and such like those type of players that are act that can be skilled and and make plays for you. Uh we don’t just want guys running around uh you know trying to knock guys into next week. Um it is a bigger ice sheet. You have to take that into effect. Um it’s going to be physical of course. Um and look you know there’s guy there’s players like Coughfield, Clint Keller, Debrink. There’s some guys are going to be on the outside. I I just I don’t think Robo should be a question. Um it would be and again I don’t expect Bill Garren to say he’s going to be on the team, but I would like a little bit more confidence. Um let’s just look at Robo a little bit right now. He’s fifth in the league in scoring. Fifth. He is he has 31 point. He’s tied with Eel. Um so he he leads Americans right now. The fact that he’s even in the same realm as McDavid and McKinnon, I I think says something. Um, and you’re you’re going to need some help offensively. Uh, let’s be uh JT Miller made four nations. I I would think I would take him over over JT Miller. Uh, right. And it’s not like Robo hasn’t played in big games. I think that’s going to be a big uh decision for some guys, too. Well, has he played in some of these big intense games, these international games, can be a different level. Well, Robert Rob Robertson’s played in in some of the highest levels of like three straight Western Conference Finals. He’s he’s actually produced okay. Um, again, I haven’t been the biggest defender of Robertson’s uh Robertson’s Stanley Cup playoff resume. Although it’s not horrible. Um, but this is like a four game, you know, right? five game stretch, whatever it is in in the Olympics, maybe six max if you make it all the way. Um, you’re going to want a guy like Robertson with the streaky the streakiness he can provide, especially in the goal scoring department. So, he said Garen has another quote says, I’m a big believer in body of work. I appreciate the first two months of the season, but I’ve said this, this is not pee-wee triyouts. This is not, oh, just take who’s playing well. If you did that, you wouldn’t need a general manager or coaches or actually trying to build a team. That is fair. I think that’s very fair. Uh Robertson does have a good body work and he’s also just going scorched earth this season. I think you got to take that into um account as well. I would just like a little more conviction about Jason Robertson. Uh and again, I’m saying all of this like with 95% believing he’s going to be on the team. I I don’t know how you could leave a robo off here. Uh the deadline’s, you know, the 1st of January, right? It’s December 31st. So, we’re just about a month away. Um, if if you get to that point and Robertson’s, let’s just say he’s top 10 in scoring, let alone top five, and you leave him off, I just I don’t think that’s um a great look. Um, he’s playing great. He deserves to be on team USA is is what I’m saying. Um, and I may just be sending strays to Bill Garren and Minnesota a bit in this segment. Uh, because I want him to be there. Okay? I’m passionate. I want him to be there. Also, uh just a little more love for Robertson. Expected goals, uh yeah, he’s third in the NHL. Yeah. 13.3. He’s third behind Reinhardt, um and Gensel. So, uh he’s he’s he’s he’s pretty good um in a in a in a lot of a lot of different ways. Um so, just wanted to to throw that out there. Um as well, he’s doing um a lot of good stuff. Uh yeah, expected uh expected goals per 60 minutes, he’s 15th in the NHL. That’s pretty good. Uh goals per uh per 60 minutes. Uh he is top 20. He’s doing a lot of good things. Um he’s doing a a lot of a lot of good things and he shoots the heck out of the puck. You want guys to get shots on net uh shots on goal per 60 minutes. He’s second in the NHL. He he gets on net. We we know that. Um, so wanted to defend my guy Robo, although there was really no defending. Okay, I’m reading too much into this article, but it was something to get me fired up here on a Thanksgiving. That’s going to do it for today’s episode of Locked On Stars. 1. You have to think the Colorado is gonna come back to earth a little bit. I love Wedgewood, but I think the more games that he plays the less effective. He’s going to be. He’s not going to be good. I’m sure he will come back to Earth a little bit too.

  2. Here is my turkey day marks, Jim Nills could be gm of the year again for making Gully head coach! Uber impressed with Gully, love the style of play much better than last year. I know they have already crowned Quinville head coach of the year but I will take Gully.

  3. I think about how last year almost every game was "the Stars don't win pretty" "the Stars squeak out a win" "the goaltending won that game". This season feels like the Stars are playing good hockey. They're earning their wins. They take ownership of their execution in all three zones. I'm always cautious. First game back after a road trip is always tough (ask Edmonton). And you have to still reincorporate Duchene and Nils and Harley and hopefully still keep the structure. I don't need the Presidents trophy, let the Avs have it, but this Stars team feels like a true contender. Way more than they did last year.

  4. USA roster is wild. Robertsons on the bubble, but you know who are shoe ins? Austin Matthews… Jack Hughes… Brady Tkachuk… Matthew Tkachuk. Guys who , yeah, have a lot of good season behind them, but have been injured most of the season. Most will just be getting back into it when the Olympics happen. Robertson has more post season games than most of them. But he's on the bubble. Make it make sense.
