From the heart of Wrigleyville, where legends are born, this is Chicago Cubs News Today. Hello Cubs fans, welcome back to the channel. Let’s strengthen our presence here. Getting straight to the point, our front office has been moving in a calculated manner this off season. If you’ve been following my recent uh analyses, you know that after the solid signing of Phil Matton, the math for constructing our bullpen began to become clearer. Maton brings stability, but he is not the final piece of the puzzle that Craig Council needs to close out tight games in September. The search for another highleverage relief arm, someone with experience in high pressure situations, has always been on Jed Hoyer’s radar. And this is where things get interesting and frankly a little confusing depending on where you get your information. The name that has emerged strongly behind the scenes recently is former St. Louis Cardinals closer and and two-time allstar Ryan Helsley. Now, if you just look at the superficial headlines, you might have seen something that makes absolutely no sense. The 31-year-old is reportedly drawing interest on the market, not as the elite reliever he once was, but as a starting pitcher. Let me be direct with you. This narrative is extremely unlikely. Analyzing the data coldly, Helley has never started a game in Major League Baseball in his entire career. Furthermore, his Arsenal is limited basically to two types of pitches. Trying to convert a 31-year-old veteran with a history of injuries and a two- pitch repertoire into a starter overnight is not just risky. It is a strategy that borders on irresponsibility in modern baseball. Therefore, when I hear these rumors about him wanting to be a starter, my internal analysis immediately dismisses this as agent noise or negotiating leverage. However, that doesn’t mean the Cubs interest isn’t real. On the contrary, the connection exists, but through a different lens. Patrick Mooney of the Athletic, a source I greatly respect for accuracy in covering our team, reported that the Cubs are in fact among the teams that have shown interest in Helsley. And my read based on how our front office operates is that this interest is presumably and exclusively as an option for the bullpen. Jed Hoyer is determined to reinforce the pitching staff. That is a fact. but he isn’t going to pay starter pricing for a conversion project. Just as we discussed in the case of Brad Keller, if any other team wants to offer Helsley a contract to be a starter, the Cubs will not enter that bidding war. Our front office’s financial discipline is clear. We pay for the actual value the player brings to the role we need, not for speculative experiments. The focus is on bringing in someone who can complement what we already have. So if we discard the idea of Helsley as a starter, what’s left, what remains is a very interesting market opportunity that fits perfectly into Jed Hoyer’s modus operandi. We are talking about signing Helley as a bounceback candidate for the bullpen. You might look at the end of his 2025 season with the New York Mets and get scared. A 7.20 ERA in his last 20 innings pitched is horrendous. There is no denying that. But my internal analysis and conversations with scouts suggest that this collapse wasn’t due to a loss of ability, but rather because he was tipping his pitches. This is a fixable mechanical issue, something our performance analysis staff and pitching coaches can adjust during spring training if the idea is to bring Helsley in as a recovery project for the bullpen. This is a move the Cubs should embrace without hesitation. Think about the structure we are building. Phil Maton is already secured, bringing his consistency. We have young Daniel Palencia with his electric arm who we hope will take a leap in quality. These two give Craig Council a good starting point for late game options next season. But to compete in our division, there seems to be a critical need for one more reliable veteran. Someone who has already been on the mound with the game on the line and doesn’t feel the pressure. Of course, in an ideal world, we would be discussing signing names like Edwin Diaz, Robert Suarez, or Devin Williams. These would be dream scenarios uh for any North Side fan. However, we need to be realistic about resource allocation. After the modest contract we gave Martin, my read of the market indicates that it is unlikely Chicago will go to the top of the reliever price table. Why? Because this front office’s number one priority is still and must be reinforcing the starting rotation with an impact name. Spending a fortune on the bullpen now could compromise our ability to pursue that elite starter. Therefore, a prove it deal for Ryan Hellsley. Betting that his problems in New York were technical and not physical represents the type of smart, low-risk, highreward move that can define a winning off season if he regains his all-star form. We will have a formidable bullpen without breaking the bank. In summary, ignore the noise about Ryan Hley as a starter. That is not going to happen at Wrigleyfield. The Cubs interest is real, but focused on rehabilitating him as a key bullpen piece. It’s a calculated bet on our coaching staff’s ability to fix mechanical flaws, aiming to get allstar performance at an affordable market price while keeping the financial focus on acquiring an elite starting pitcher. Now, I want to hear from you Northsiders. Do you agree with this approach of seeking a bounceback project like Helsley for the bullpen or would you prefer the front office to be more aggressive and spend more on a guaranteed name even if it costs a potential reinforcement in the rotation? Leave your opinions in the comments below. I want to understand the fan base’s pulse on this strategy.
