Francisco Lindor and Jeff McNeil had a heated confrontation last season, just the latest friction between the teammates in what has been a turbulent Mets relationship.

After a defensive lapse on June 20 in Philadelphia, an angry Lindor at some point began verbally attacking McNeil, according to a source, leading to what was described as a tense standoff between the two. The Mets lost their seventh straight that night — an initial stretch of futility that indicated maybe something was amiss with a team that had surged a season-high 21 games above .500 just over a week earlier.

“A play didn’t get made and that pissed [Lindor] off,” a source who was nearby the confrontation said.

There is no indication this latest known incident between the two turned physical. That is unlike in 2021, when an argument between the two sparked by a defensive letdown spilled over into the runway between the dugout and clubhouse. The Post later reported that Lindor grabbed McNeil by the throat and pinned him against a wall.

Another clubhouse source indicated that relations between Lindor and Juan Soto were chilly, following the latter's arrival on a record $765 million contract.

"Soto is very businesslike — all business, no fluff," the source said. "He wants to come to the yard and work his tail off and win games. He's not into fashion or any of that other stuff. Lindor is into that. It's just two different personalities."

There are questions over who was leading the team. Lindor, who has often been identified as captain material, seemed to lose some of his grasp on the clubhouse.

Soto hardly dispelled that notion with his assertion late in the season that Starling Marte was the team captain.

"[Marte] is literally the leader of this team — I feel like he's actually the captain of this team," Soto said. "He's bringing everybody together. He's bringing the energy we need. He's a guy who was been stepping up every single time."

  1. I’m really glad that when I leave a company they don’t go to the media and say things like “that guy makes ugly Power Point slides”

  2. Basically saying what we already knew, that the Mets didn’t have a true leader in the clubhouse.

TBF, Lindor seems like a very get in your face and pep you up kind of player, while Soto and McNeil are very much *not* those kind of players.

  3. Ah good, I was wondering what my 60 something year old dad would be calling me about tomorrow.

Edit: Update, only took 37 minutes.

  4. If this means anything – when in Denver, Marte and Lindor were hanging out and having a great time.

Source – me who saw them at the ritz.

  5. Anyone have a clip of what the play may have been? I think over the course of a year teammates are likely to get into things, but how they are after is what matters more.

  6. >Soto is very businesslike. He wants to come to the yard and work his tail off and win games. He’s not into fashion or any of that other stuff. Lindor is into that.

What the fuck does Lindor liking fashion have to do with anything I don’t see how that affects his on the field work.

  7. I know Lindor is the common denominator in this (if it is even true) but he seems like one of the least likely guys in baseball to be a clubhouse problem

  8. Winning cures all. By this time next year the story could be Soto’s businesslike demeanor and Lindor’s more carefree style are a good complement.

McNeil and Lindor, as the story notes, have clashed. McNeil is an intense personality so it’s not surprising they got into another shouting match in a difficult season.

  9. Ayeee this took until almost December to come out?! Thats a win in my book! As a mets fan its really all about the small victories

  10. It’s hilarious to see NY media push the Lindor captain narrative when the clubhouse didnt view him that way and now they’re writing about how the Lindor captain stuff caused problems in the clubhouse

Like hey, you guys caused that issue!

  11. It’s the NY post. Gossip gossip gossip. Sensationalize. Find a molehill, make it a mountain.

  12. I’m still trying to figure out if the animal they saw in the clubhouse was a Rat or a Raccoon.

  13. If you want a Mets fan opinion then here it is:

Lindor is a hard worker who wants to win desperately. He does not get along well with players he feels are not trying to accomplish that.

McNeil has mentally checked out and stopped putting in work ever since we gave him a big contract 3 years ago, which is odd considering he was in the minors as a nobody until he was 27 so you’d expect to have a great work ethic.

Those two were never going to get along well and I expect this to lead to a trade of McNeil.

  14. So they got rid of Nimmo so lindor doesn’t have to deal with mcneil/rookies anymore? And now nimmo is leaking stories to the post?

  15. McNeil just wants to play golf. Its so evident to anyone whose been watching this team over the last 5 years

  16. I noticed Lindor and Soto weren’t the best of friends but I think they are both professional. The vibes in the clubhouse were off all season though.

  17. Well, Lindor smiles a lot and McNeil swears sometimes so we all know whose fault that particular rift is.

  18. The Mets ERA from June to the end of the season was 4.88, 28th in the league.

They were 47-57 during that time

The Mets team wrc+ was still top 10 during that stretch

The idea of garbage journalists blaming Lindor or Soto but not the pitching is just bait to generate clicks.

Fuck the post should be banned everywhere

  19. People on the Mets sub will always remember the “Reyes is a cancer” guy. Hes probably comin outta retirement with this news.

  20. If true this raises eyebrows brows – can Lindor and McNeil co exist? Should we continue to try with them? Clearly we had chemistry issues last year.

  21. Idk if it’s just me but I honestly couldn’t find this all less interesting. Teammates angry after underperforming a massive payroll and McNeil and Lindor getting in a fight, sounds about right.

  22. Juan Soto doesn’t care about coworker culture, he’s just there to clock in and clock out.

    *He’s just like me*

  23. Wait the two teammates who previously clashed, clashed again? Shocking! And Lindor and Soto are not best buds? The sun might not rise tomorrow.

  24. I don’t really buy the Lindor and Soto thing. All the quotes about him and Lindor I’ve seen before and didn’t really take anything by it more than just “they’re two pretty different people who just work together”. They’re not friends but I got no real reason to think that they don’t like each other. They tolerate each other/get along with each other in a “I have to be around you” sense and that seems to be the relationship.

But the Lindor and Jeff tbing I could see being legit. But it feels like there’s a pretty good chance Jeff gets traded this off season so like 🤷‍♂️

  25. ny post story about a rift in the mets clubhouse sounds like it was planted by the mets so no one will be mad when they trade lindor
