The Sacramento Kings Are Wasting Theirs’ and Everyone’s Time | Locked On Kings

Well, thank goodness the NBA Cup is over for the Sacramento Kings, who not only failed to win a single cup game. They finished with a point differential of 66. We’re 20 games into the season and we all can see that changes are long overdue. I’ll share with you what changes need to happen now right here on Locked on Kicks. You are Locked on Kings, your daily Sacramento Kings podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. And now, ladies and gentlemen, it is that time. Time for another episode of Locked on Kings. Hello and welcome into Locked on Kings, your podcast hub for Sacramento Kings coverage all season long. This episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Right now, new customers can bet just $5. And if your bet wins, you’ll get $300 in bonus bets to use across the app. Head to fanduel.com to get started. My name is Matt George. I have the privilege of being your host here. I’m a Sacramento sports anchor and reporter for ABC 10 News. The Sacramento Kings just lost to the Utah Jazz. Like I said in the introduction, 0 and4 in NBA Cup play. Something tells me they will not be moving on to the knockout round. They are I mean the cup was over after their first loss when they got obliterated by what 31 points to the Oklahoma City Thunder, but they uh they they failed to win a single cup game. Not only that, they lost by a combined 66 points. So the cup, we can put it in the rearview mirror. It doesn’t matter. It didn’t matter. But the only chance of hardware that the Sacramento Kings really had this year is long gone with the end of the NBA Cup run for Sacramento. But here we are 20 games into the season. And that 20 game mark is significant because like I shared with you uh when when I uh laid out what I was told and what I believe and found out that the Sacramento Kings plan is, what Scott Perry’s plan is for this Kings team this season, that that 20 game mark, that 20 to 25 game range is is kind of a general rule of thumb in the NBA of you need about 20 to 25 games to really assess your team and how good they are, what works, what doesn’t. It kind of it’s like a a see what you have mark. Well, we all can see what the Sacramento Kings have. It sucks. This team is five and 15. The defense is god awful. Maybe even worse than we initially expected. and the offense that we expected to be at a level enough to make this team compete for a a potential playoff spot. Certainly a playin spot hovering around 500 because of their offense. That offense is really, really bad. So, you need 20 games to kind of analyze what you have, what you need, where you’re at as a Sacramento Kings team. It didn’t take you didn’t need all 20 to realize this situation, but now you’ve used all 20. Here they are. You need to make a change. You need to make changes, not a change. Like moving Dennis Shruder out of the starting lineup and moving Russell Westbrook into the starting lineup. Like that’s that was putting a a kids band-aid over a gushing wound. It it it was a slight change just to change things up and it benefited some players to some extent. Dennis Rutder has looked better off the bench, although he’s missed the last two games uh with with an injury, but I’m talking about significant fundamental changes to how you are running this basketball team this season because what you’re doing now not only isn’t working, it’s a complete waste of time, waste of our time, waste of the king’s time. It’s just useless. Truthfully, useless. There’s really no benefit whatsoever from how the Sacramento Kings are operating as a basketball team right now this season. And I understand that this isn’t a fantasy world. This isn’t NBA 2K where I can just make trades happen like that. like I laid out for you in the plan and the Kings being in the first phase, which is kind of the the the like figuring out what you have phase, the the evaluation phase, right? I understand that it typically takes maybe around mid December is when trade season quote unquote really starts to open up around the NBA. So right now on November 28th, Scott Perry can’t pick up the phone and force any of these general managers to trade for Demard Rosen or Zack Lavine or Demand Sabonis or Malik Monk or whoever he may want to trade. Of course, he can have conversations with general managers and I promise you conversations are already being had around the league for different players and gauging interest and preliminary starter conversations. But the Kings can’t wait for the trade deadline to come and go. The Kings can’t wait for another team to be ready to take some of the problems off of the Kings hands. There is a move. There’s a change that you can make right now that Doug Christie should be able to make that needs to happen and that’s adjusting your rotations. Trades might still take time. Adjusting rotations does not take any time whatsoever. Zack Lavine played 39 minutes tonight. Granted, he scored over 30 points, led the Kings in scoring. Don’t care. Demard Rosen played 36 minutes tonight. Again, in your loss to the Utah Jazz. Meanwhile, Keon Ellis played seven minutes. Nick Clifford played six minutes. Now, to be fair, Maxim Marino played 22 minutes, scored 19 points. And what I actually really liked is at the end of this game when we knew it was out of reach, the final minute or so, and and and we knew the Kings weren’t coming back, but Doug Christie called a timeout. And you could tell Russell Westbrook, who finished with a triple double, somehow the Sacramento Kings have made me like completely not care about Russell Westbrook triple doubles. Uh um like you could tell the Kings were like emphasizing, okay, over these final few possessions that we have, even if we’re not winning the basketball game, let’s give Maxim Reno the ball. They they drew up plays for him. They made they made it it was very intentional that they were trying to give Max the basketball. I love that. Good. Now, take that for the final minute of a game and make that who you’re going to be as a basketball team for the remainder of this season. I’m not saying draw up plays for Maxim Reno for 35 plus minutes a night, but like we know that Maxim Reno at least has a chance at being part of your future in some capacity. So good. Give him opportunities to score. Keegan Murray, Keegan Murray played 45 minutes. 45 of the 48 minutes in this game. Well, I don’t think it’s going to be healthy in the long run for Keegan to play that many minutes. Good. I’m glad he’s playing. And once again, we’ll talk about his numbers tonight and his numbers over the last four games uh towards the end of this podcast. But once again, Keegan Murray was aggressive. He played very well because we know Keegan Murray is as of now part of the future plan for the Sacramento Kings. So good, that makes sense. But Keon Ellis playing seven minutes. Maybe you don’t think Keon Ellis is part of your future. Okay, fine. Nick Clifford playing six minutes. I understand recently when Nate Clifford has played he’s not really looked too great. He’s not really looked too confident. You could tell maybe like what whatever like typical rookie wall, the speed of the game, whatever it may be. Nak does not look very very comfortable right now. But you know what helps a rookie getting comfortable playing and working his way through it. not having him sit on the bench and play six minutes so that we can watch Zack Lavine play almost 40 and Demar De Rozan play 36 for a team that’s five and freaking 15 that just lost to the Utah Jazz because until the fourth quarter when they scored an empty 40 plus points they could barely score 27 points in a quarter with 39 minutes of Lavine and 36 minutes of Demar De Rozan. I know we talk about those guys more than anybody else. And to be honest with you, if Demand Sabonis was playing in this game and played 37 minutes, I’d be saying the same thing. Stop wasting our time giving these guys heavy minutes. It does nothing for us as viewers. Does nothing for the fan base. And Doug Christie, it does nothing for you. They’re clearly not winning games for you. So, they’re not buying you a better chance at keeping your job. And Scott Perry, again, go to Doug. knock on the door of his office, give him a call and say, “Doug, I give you the green light. Play the guys that actually maybe are going to be part of this future going forward. Enough of this. I’m not saying you have to bench Lavine and bench Demard Rosen and they can sit there and ride the pine and you don’t have them start. Start them. I don’t care. But cap them at 32 minutes every night unless they’re really truly cooking.” And again, you could talk about, “Oh, Zack Lavine scored more than 30 points.” Great. I don’t care. Zack Lavine has a reputation around the NBA of being a guy that puts up empty calories. I was a like there is a lot about Zack Lavine as a player that I really really like. There was a lot about Zack Lavine as a player coming into this season that I was really confident in. I’m not confident in it anymore. You know why? Because the Kings are five and freaking 15. And Zack Lavine is part of that problem. He’s not the problem, but he’s part of that problem. So is Demard Rosen. So is Deamont Sabonis. So is Russell Westbrook to some extent. But at least I know Russell Westbrook is going to play hard every single night. So is Dennis Shruder. I don’t know if any of those guys I just said are going to be a part of this King’s team or should be looked at as a part of this Kings team beyond this season. So why am I wasting my time watching them play almost 40 minutes? It doesn’t do anything for you. What more do you need to see from this failure of a roster? It’s a complete and utter failure. And we know whose failure it is. We know the consistent. We know the constant who’s been there. It’s ownerships. It’s VCron’s failure. We know why Zack Lavine is here in Sacramento. Nobody’s blaming Scott Perry or Doug Christie for it. But start using the time that you actually have wisely to some extent. I know you still got 62 games. God, that’s painful to say that we have 62 more freaking games of this. But you know what will make those 62 games unbearable? Watching Zack Lavine and Demar De Rozan play almost 40 minutes a night when Nick Clifford and Keon Ellis are getting seven and six minutes. What are we doing here? There is zero point zero reason to have Lavine and D Rozan playing that much. And you’re not Don’t Don’t try and sell me on this. Oh, we’re showcasing them. you’re showcasing Demar Rosen or Zack Lavine or or any of these guys. Malik Monk, although Malik I think doesn’t deserve the same kind of vitriol that I’m pointing towards some of the other veterans. I do think Malik could have a future here in Sacramento. I think many people in the Kings organization disagree with that for some reason. But you’re not showcasing any of these dudes to the league. Every general manager in the league knows exactly who those guys are and they know what they would be trading for in those guys and they know they have a pretty good idea of what they’re comfortable giving up for those guys or not. So Demar De Rozan playing 36 minutes or Zack Lavine playing 39 minutes and scoring 30 plus points is not going to get general manager in Milwaukee to go Zack can still do that. Maybe he can do that for my team. No, they know who Zack Lavine is. Apparently, there’s some potential interest in him. Fine. Figure out the details of how to get that trade done, but Zach playing 30 minutes or 39 minutes ignite is not going to change anything in those negotiations and in those conversations. I’ve been harping on how bad the Sacramento Kings offense is a lot recently because it makes no sense to me how a roster this loaded with offensive talent could be this abysmal on the offensive end. And in fact, it just it just honestly ticks me off how how horrible this team is on offense. And it’s because like the Kings offense is fundamentally broken. Just fundamentally broken. Their halfcourt offense is your turn, my turn, garbage. And it’s been that way since preseason, right? And maybe sometimes one or two guys get hot enough or play well enough for it to carry them through enough to win a basketball game. Hey, you you’ve got five of those wins. Whoop-dedoo. But for the most part, the halfcourt offense is disjointed. It’s isolation. It’s disconnected. It is just plain bad. And the reality is with the way the Sacramento Kings play through 20 games this season, the best version of their offense is in transition. However, in order to score in transition, you need to get stops on defense, which we know this team does not do. So, this roster that is loaded with offensive weapons, individual offensive stars, talking multiple former Allstars, future Hall of Fame talent, they who are also expectedly bad or as expected bad on the defensive end. They need to play good defense in order to score consistently. That’s what we’re doing here in Sacramento. How could you possibly ever hope to find any sort of success with that at all with this roster? And the results are what we see. The Kings offense is inconsistent and for the most part bad. We’re talking like bottom five in the league where we absolutely did not expect it to be. Only a few spots ahead of how horrible the defense is, which we did expect. And it’s because again, this roster is so backwards because they’re constructed with offense in mind, but they focus on the defensive end. And they need their defense in order for the offense to score, but they can’t play defense because they’re bad defensively because they don’t have defenders on the roster. They’re a bunch of offensive players who can’t score because they can’t play defense. Make it make sense to me. It just it just doesn’t. The only way they know how to score is the same way you and I know how to score or kind of try to know how to score when we play pickup basketball at our local gym or playing oneon-one with a friend at the park. Like that’s that’s the King’s offense. Okay, it’s your turn to go one-on-one. Okay, maybe we’ll set a little screen for you and maybe we’ll have two action between these two guys because they’re kind of comfortable playing together. the rest of you spread the floor out, stand on the corner, maybe catch a pass and and shoot, but you’re probably going to shoot it at like a low30s percentage, like the entire team shooting percentage because defenses don’t have to respect you because you don’t have enough shooters on this roster. Again, it just none no aspect of this team offensively makes sense. None of it. None of it. In fact, what makes the most sense about this Sacramento Kings team is that they’re horrible on defense. That is what makes the most sense about this Kings team. It’s crazy to me. It’s crazy to me. And this is where like I’ve given Doug Christie and his coaching staff a lot of passes because like like I’ve talked about a lot when Mike Brown was fired and I’ve been consistent with it. I don’t think this is a defensive problem. Like as fundamentally broken as the offense is, that’s that’s a tiny crack compared to the crater that is this roster construction. It’s horrendous. It’s so bad. And we’ve known this. Everybody in the NBA has known this. anyone with a basic basketball IQ looked at this roster and said, “This probably doesn’t work.” Shocking. It has not worked. I just don’t think everyone or we all expected it to be this catastrophically bad through 20 games. But maybe it’s doing us and everybody else a favor that it is this bad so we can hopefully move on from it quicker, which is hopefully the whole point of this podcast. But this is where I am a little critical of coaching because Doug Christie, Mike Woodson, whoever, Bobby Jackson, who cares, any of these guys, they can’t figure out what they need to do or how to be consistent with their rotations and with who’s playing with their messaging. A strength of Doug Christie was supposedly he did a better job than Mike Brown at analyzing his roster for what they are and maximizing the talent on the roster. He did that better than Mike, which is one of the reasons why he was able to keep the ship afloat after the Kings fired Mike Brown last December and De’Arren Fox was on the way out the door. Doug was able to find a way to keep that team above 500 at least over the stretch of games that he was the coach. We all saw what happened in the play, but doesn’t matter. Like he he did a good job there. And one of the reasons why was I think he did a better job than Mike in the short term of maximizing that roster a little bit better. They they rallied around him. He figured some things out. All that’s gone. All that is gone because there’s nothing being maximized on this roster. Nobody’s being maximized. But now to the defense of Doug Christy and his coaching staff, when we go back to the roster construction, which is at the center of all this, nothing’s being maximized. Nobody’s being maximized because everybody’s individual game doesn’t fit the collective. You have a you have a group of individuals that aren’t capable of playing consistently solid team basketball because their games don’t fit team basketball. and their games specifically don’t fit the type of team basketball that Doug Christie and the Kings are talking about and trying to play. Most of these players as we felt from the very beginning do not fit the vision and the pillars and the talking points of Scott Perry and by extension Doug Christy’s vision for the future of the Sacramento Kings. We’ve known this and yet you’re still trying to cram a square peg into a round hole. They’ve been doing it all season through these 20 games and it hasn’t worked. So again, stop wasting our time and do something different. Either play the players who do or can actually fit that vision going forward. play those guys more or change how you want to play or adjust your vision to better fit the roster that you have. You got your two you got both feet in two different pools. Dive head first into one of them and I can tell you which one’s the better pool to dive into. The one that actually has clean water. That’s that’s the pool with the future. That’s the pool with the young guys. That’s the pool with Keegan Murray taking the majority of your shots. Doesn’t mean the team’s going to be better. Doesn’t mean you’re going to win more games, but at least you’re going to do something productive towards some sort of future here in Sacramento. Because right now, all you’re doing is like it’s like that party game. It’s like the Kings are Good analogy, Matt. The Kings are the the kid at the birthday party that does like the the 10 spin. and you put your head down on the on the thing, the bat that you use to whack the piñata and you spin 10 times so you get nice and dizzy. The Kings have been spinning and getting themselves dizzy and now they’re swinging at the piñata that isn’t actually there. It’s over here, but they’re just swinging and missing at this piñata because that’s where they their visions, their dizzy vision says where it is. Maybe that wasn’t a good analogy. Maybe that entire thing was bad, but so is this version of the Kings. This episode of Locked on Kings is also brought to you by FanDuel. If there’s anything that’s been able to get us through this last handful of Sacramento Kings games, and to be fair, over the last four games, the Kings are two and two. You can guess which two games I wasn’t here for and which two games I’ve been here for. Uh, it’s Keegan Murray. Keegan Murray is playing really, really well. And we talked about this a little bit after the Kings lost to the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday, but like Keegan is doing his best to give this fan base some sort of life and doing his best to to to one showcase his ability as being more than just a 3 and D role player. Thank God. And two, showing or doing his best to kind of force Doug Christie and Scott Perry’s hand of all right, the most fun thing about this team right now, the only good thing about this team right now is the way Keegan Murray is playing. And Keegan Murray we believe is part of our future. So let’s go full into this Keegan Murray future focused approach to the remainder of this season because there’s nothing better to do. Like hopefully Keegan’s kicking that ball a little bit further down the road or speeding that process up. Here are Keegan Murray’s last four games at Denver against the Nuggets when the Kings won. 19 points, seven of 14 from the field, five rebounds, two steals, one block. in the Kings win at home against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Keegan Murray 26 points, 10 of 19 from the field, 14 rebounds, one steal, one block against the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday in Sacramento, Keegan Murray, 19 points, seven of 16 from the field, eight rebounds, two steals, two blocks. And then tonight against the Utah Jazz in 45 minutes of playing, Keegan Murray, 23 points, nine of 18 from the field, eight rebounds, three steals, two blocks. So in those four games, you’ve got two double doubles. You’ve got two games over 20 points. The other two games just under 20 points at 19 each. You’ve got three out of the four games with multiple steals. Two out of the four games with multiple blocks. at least one steal and block recorded in every single one of these games. And yet, my favorite number in all these four games is 14, 19, 16, and 18. the field goal attempts, 14 field goal attempts, 19 field goal attempts, 16 field goal attempts, 18 field goal attempts. Those have all been either number one on the team or top two or top three on the team. Tonight was top two. Zack Lavine, I think, took 21 shots. And again, Zach offensively was cooking, so good for him. That’s everything I want. That is everything I want. Keegan, keep shooting. Kings, make it your mission to keep feeding that man the ball and giving him the opportunity to score. I still do feel that for some reason when Keegan is playing well or a couple fans noted this on social media and they were absolutely right. I can’t remember who pointed it out. I wish I I could I’d give them credit. There was a play where Keegan actually it might have been a couple plays where Keegan established himself in in the the mid to low post. He had position. He had a size advantage. And the Kings didn’t get him the basketball. Now, I can’t tell you specifically on those plays who they got the ball to, who shot it, maybe they made it, maybe they didn’t. To me, that doesn’t matter. Like, if Keegan Murray is in a position to score, feed Keegan the basketball. I don’t care if the defense knows it’s coming. I don’t care if it’s obvious, and I don’t care that you overdo it. In fact, show me that you can overdo it. feed Keegan Murray the basketball. Find some way, shape, or form to maximize this time or take advantage of this time. And right now, Keegan Murray is maybe the only person taking advantage of it. I will say Maxim Reno is too. Again, Maxim had a really, really good game tonight. 19 points, 22 minutes. Max making the most of the opportunity opened up by the injury to Deontto Sabonis. And good for him. But Keegan Murray is really truly like I’m so impressed with we because we talked about it all summer long like is this Keegan’s last chance to show us? Will he show us anything? So many people saying we know who Keegan is. We know who Keegan is. and Keegan, whether he’s heard that noise or just knows himself that this is his opportunity to step up, whether it’s him responding and reacting to the the the payday that the Sacramento Kings gave him before the season started or just naturally the the the path of his progression as an NBA player. Keegan is in attack mode. Keegan is more aggressive than we have ever seen him and at the same time more confident than we’ve ever seen him. Keegan’s always been confident when you’d ask him the questions of, “Hey, how confident are you in this? How confident are you?” He’s always Yeah, I’m very confident. I’m confident in this. Yeah, I know I can score. I know I can do this. Blah blah blah blah blah. But we’re like, we’re seeing it. We’re seeing him go, I’m going to try this shot because I kind of I’m gonna see like I feel good about it. And a lot of them are going in. So good for Keegan. Keep shooting, Kings. Keep getting him the ball. Make it your mission. In fact, make it your mission to make me eat my words and come on a podcast after a Kings game and go, “Okay, Kings, you gave the ball to Keegan too much. Make that your mission.” I would love to be able to say that on the Locked on Kings podcast because I’ve never been able to say that at any point really in my uh or in Keegan Murray’s career here in Sacramento. All right. Want to hear your thoughts on this loss to the Utah Jazz. Kings play on Sunday against the Memphis Grizzlies in the Golden One Center. Remember last time they played the Grizzlies, they got beat by a billion points. Hopefully that doesn’t happen again, but I will be at that game. If it’s my first home game in a while. Um, but looking forward to going no matter what happens. If you’re going to the game, come by, say hi. I’m at the top of section 105. Uh, if you want to talk about this game, if you want to talk about what we talked about the Kings ch making some changes, changes to the rotation, how many minutes you would take away from certain guys and where you would give those minutes, share them with me, Matt Georgeack on Twitter. 1. I don't even keep track of when they play anymore. Not missing anything and my mood stays chill… Maybe when they field a complete roster, with players who play defense at every position, I'll be more interested? Seeing an opponent score 70 at half is not entertaining…

  2. This GM better start making moves or he jus going with last gm pieces..smh he needa clear room n build arnd sumone.. needa go yung n big wita strong defender like brooks.. GM needa clear room n get Ja to Sac that'll b a splash we needa see.. Clifford n Murray team n 3 yrs.. 💯

  3. Devin-Malik-Nique-Keegan-Dimas as starters/main minute players and make the others earn their minutes as backups until they can get stops on defense. That also includes Maxine bc he’s got a lot of potential but has to show he can protect the rim at least a bit better than Sabonis for his size

  4. Tell new GM Scott Perry to get his eyesight checked because he obviously doesn't see what we all see!!!
Like a coach who keeps doing things that DONT WORK yet he keeps plodding along game after game!!!
Doesn't seem Perry is very effective at his job!!
And give 3 point sharpshooter Doug McDermott some time! He's played like 5 minutes all season & made 2 of 3 long shots. To say his defense isn't good enough is laughable because his D can't be worse than his teammates! McDermott 3 point shooting can help on a team that lives and dies with the 3 point shot!!!
    TRY SOMETHING NEW!!!!

  6. Good to see them loosing without Dennis.

    😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Dennis and Doug are the only ones to know how to build a strong team and play as a team.

But you all are celebrating this booring, bad, caotic and loosing star, Russ. Mr. Trible Double Ego. Monk and Russ has be traded and set be free.

  7. keon ellis played 7 minutes with all that defence and potential from last year lol 😂😂7mins fsazking Joke ..Tell the owner to Go invest in a cricket Team Joke

  8. Wasnt even close to a team game. Lavine was just looking to shoot everytime he got the ball not set anyone up. Most boring team weve ever had besides murray and westbrook

  9. Christie hasn't shown – neither last season or this one – to have the balls to play the kids. He will keep playing DeRozen as a starter and Lavine to keep their stock up. But a trade needs to happen.

  10. And we haven’t even talked about the fact that you were playing 30+ year-old guys almost 40 minutes a night and what if God forbid Zach Lavine goes out there and blows his knee out or tears an Achilles then we are really screwed… do we wanna see Zach Lavine sitting on the bench all next season collecting almost $50 million……

  11. Well I know as a fan I would rather watch the young guys or our guys like Monk and a few others playing hard and developing win or loose. Feed Keegan and just DNP Lavine, sorry but I never thought it would work and a guard that turns the ball over more than Buddy Heild is something I never wanted to see. Kangs are the bottom of the league I mean the skid mark and it is painful
