The Bulls Get Outrebounded & Outworked In Loss To Pelicans
The Chicago Bulls suffer an embarrassing loss to a Pelicans team that had won two games at that point in the season. The question now becomes about the Chicago Bulls is why do the Bulls keep losing these close games and what can they do to fix it? We’re going to talk about that all and more on today’s Locked on Bulls. [Music] You are Locked on Bulls. Your daily Chicago Bulls podcast. part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. There goes Pat, the designer, host, and creator of the Windy City Breeze. and host of the Chicago Bears podcast over at ESPN 1000. Pat lost last night, bro. Saw that for the Pelicans, bro. In a game where the Bulls just got outworked, bro. They It’s It’s the thing that’s so frustrating about these type of losses is that and people were like, “Well, the Bulls had no actual center out there.” Like, let’s not act like Derek Queen isn’t 6’8 and Eve miss is listed as 610. Like, he’s not a seven a legit sevenfooter. Like I’m I’m not even giving the Bulls the caveat this time of of being, you know, of sevenfooters cuz they didn’t have sevenfooters either out there. How’d you feel about the game overall, Pat? Listen, um I I tweeted this out last night and I I just it’s sad to see, but especially after the first couple weeks of the season, you thought you had something different. You got 13 dudes out of 15 dudes out there that just want to look cool. You got 13 dudes that are just like, I play in the NBA. I play for the Chicago Bulls. We just moving through. Hey, what’s good? We in New Orleans, baby. We on a trip. You got You got a team of dudes that aren’t committed to winning. And unfortunately, listen, as time goes on, that starts to show more and more because effort should never be something that is consistently in question. And I think it’s the biggest question that we’ve had about this Bulls team probably since, I don’t know, 2021. Like I I at this point I don’t even know if it’s a Billy Donovan thing. I don’t know if you need a new coach. I don’t know if if it’s you need all new players. Like in my mind, in the world I grew up in, in the world I live in, speaking to the athletes that I talk to, if you ain’t got enough in yourself to wake up and put effort in, then you don’t need to be in this NBA. You don’t need to be in this league. You don’t need to be a professional athlete. And it it it looks like we got 13 out of 15 dudes out there. And I’ll say I I I think Giddy is is doing all that he can um to try and, you know, get this team to to go in the right direction. And I I would say Vouch right now, which is crazy to say. Listen, yesterday proved a lot of what and you know, I’ve seen it’s been mixed responses to Vuch’s postgame comments after the last win, right? Like some people like, “Well, I’m glad that the veterans said this. Some people think it was the wrong person to say it, but I think a game like last night proves everything V was saying was right. I listen, I don’t know. I I don’t think that’s fixable. Effort’s not fixable. If you got dudes that don’t want to put effort in to make millions of dollars to play a children’s game, then you get ready for a long season. Yeah. Like there there is no I get it. We’re early in the season. There’s a lot of time to bounce back. You can make this happen. You can figure this out. You can have this scheme. Scheme don’t matter. Scheme don’t matter. Um, what we saw last night was a team that that we praised in the beginning of the season for playing like you were from Chicago to now a team that looks like they just said Josh Gideon V, but I also I throw IO in there. Yeah. Okay. So, 12 out of 12 attack in the paint. Yeah. Here’s the saddest part. It ain’t Modis, bro. M. What do you think about Modis getting benched in the second half of the game? Like, he didn’t he still played in the second half, but what do you think about him? You know, when they came out of that second half, you saw Mis Bales on the bench. He deserves it. And I hope it embarrasses him. I hope that you care enough that you’re being but obviously you don’t because you’re not doing the things that are clearly being asked of. If you want to just be an offensive player, that’s fine. But it’s pretty obvious that Billy Donovan is hoping for more from you. It’s pretty obvious that Billy Donovan wants to see more from you because when you look at the numbers, he’s not shooting bad. He’s not. No, he’s not playing poorly offensively. But the biggest problem is you’re a liability at every turn on the court. Like I listen and the worst part what what it reminds me of is and I don’t think he’s that elite of a score. What it reminds me of is when Demar would decide to play defense and it would be like Demar listen you’ve given up 17 corner threes bro maybe help us stop that. And then he would play lock down defense for a quarter. You’d be like, “You could do this the whole time. You just didn’t give a damn.” Yeah. Like, and and I think or like those games with with Zack, too. You remember those like like it happened like once or twice every season where it would be like Zack just is like, “Hey, you’re not scoring on me. I I went like that time was that Jimmy Butler was like, “No, I’m guarding Jimmy.” And I want I want the matchup. I want to prove that this why I get paid the big bucks. and he was you just sat there and you just like you could do this the entire time. And and the thing that’s so frustrating about it is that a lot I’m not saying all defense is is effort, but I’d say Pat 45 to 50% of it is effort. Like listen, it’s just it’s effort. when you’re when you’re that athletic, um I would say probably 70% of it just has to be effort because you got to think most of the players that especially last night that we were playing um Zion don’t look like Zion no more. I he I mean like he got 29 and shout out to him. It was an efficient 29 but like he don’t look like the dominant force that we started. That first that first half Zion looked mad pedestrian and it was almost like he woke up like hey well this Bulls team ain’t a ain’t fighting at all. I I can go out there and get my I I can get I can get some good numbers on this and and you took P will off of him but like and that’s an issue. I I I do look at at Billy Donovan on with some question marks on that cuz it’s the one dude in the NBA I can look at and be like Pete Will plays this mug really well. Um but it it just watching last night like there there were zero answers because you didn’t have guys that wanted to put forth the effort. Oh, that’s why I was say like when you when you’re when you’re modest in size, effort makes a big difference. Yeah. Like literally just showing a little bit of effort and jumping in front of the dude that is blowing past you on a consistent basis like you’ll probably slow down seven of his 10 shots. You know what it is and you you hit on this point early in this when you started talking about Modest is that you know like almost like like they care more about the flash aspect of it, right? But to to highlight that Modis’s blocks have been his blocks have gone up. I think over the last like almost 10 games he’s a like two 2.2 22 blocks per game, which is amazing, right? He finishes in that pace, you’ll be top three in the league in blocks. But as I’ve always said to people, just because you get blocks, just like with steals with Tyson Daniels, it doesn’t always mean you’re the best defender. And it almost seems like Madison is like, you see, you see, I blocked that shot. Okay, that’s cool. But what about everything in between? The the play Wimy’s killing it right now with almost four blocks per game. You’re not going to be at that level. you still there’s still so many other possessions that you have to be sound defensively on that because you get a couple of pretty blocks over the course of the game that don’t mean you’re playing good defense. Yeah. He’s like Miles Turner like three years ago. Miles Turner was not a good defender three years ago. Miles Turner was like must be like he blocked a but he’s blocking four shots a game. Be like he’s giving up 30 points. Yeah. Like, yeah, if somebody’s standing across from you has taken 17 shots and is putting up 30, but you blocked four of them, that don’t mean you had a good game. I mean, you got four, you got lucky four times. Like, I I just I don’t know, man. I don’t know if it’s a Billy issue. I don’t know if it’s, you know, that the the voice is growing silent and they don’t want to play for him anymore. Um, effort’s the easiest thing in the world to show. So you say if the teams doesn’t want to show up for him anymore. I think the the most recent example, not most recent, but one of the biggest examples in Bull’s history of a team that just started silencing out is Scott Skyles, right? That’s what it looks like. And and if and much like Billy Donovan, he was here for a while, had some success, and then it just got to a point where it was just like that voice in the locker room isn’t hit no more. No, I I’ll be honest with you, that’s kind of where I was going next. that I I I don’t think it is Billy Donovan. Okay. You don’t just like I didn’t think it was Scott Sky. I think we may be to a point though where they’re done with him. We may be to a point now where they’re like Billy I mean like it’s cool. He a good coach. I mean they all still do talk very positively about Billy Donovan. So yeah. I mean listen nobody badmouththed Scotty. He just he was like they don’t want to do what I’m saying what I’m telling them to do. So it’s no point in me being here. Like Scott Sky Scouts kind of fired himself. Yeah. I mean, yeah, that that they literally were like, “Please stick around for a little while longer.” He was like, “For what?” Like, “For what? For why? Nobody’s listening. What are you talking about?” And then we got Dererick Rose and Vinnie Delene Negro. Um, so there you go on that one. Vinnie D was like, “Oh, you going to listen or we going to throw these hands?” And and through hands they did. Uh, so we’re gonna And through hands they did. We’re going to keep the conversation going. We’re talking about Billy Donovan experimenting with Patrick Williams at the starting center yesterday and how Pat feels about that. I’m just saying. I just feel like we could have done a little better on that one. Yeah. Yeah. You know, it is what it is. Uh Pat Patrick Williams started at center yesterday for the Chicago Bulls. It seemed like an odd choice considering that you do have Jaylen Smith there. I don’t know if this kind of shows Billy Donovan’s hands and he just doesn’t trust Jaylen to play maybe over 20 minutes consistently or start or something like that. Now, I kind of get it as well. They were starting Derek Queen. Derek Queen’s 68 69ish. Uh still, you know, he’s a strong guy, but maybe you thought that Patrick Williams was going to be able to handle uh to Derek Queen in that sense. How do you feel about the experiment of starting P Will at center? Well, essentially you had P will mostly guarding uh uh Zion early on and then you had Mis who is they’re putting Josh Giddy on Derek Queen some too, which I didn’t I was nervous. I I I I wasn’t a fan of that. I think it continues to be this. The game starts with one game plan. He sees Modis’s defense and then goes, “All right, let’s throw somebody else at there.” I I think like the first couple of possessions it was Modis on Queen. They were quick, very quick, easy buckets. Um, and then you got the rest of the game in there where um, you were getting guys kind of mixed in on Derek Quinn. But listen, I thought that was playing the matchups. Me and you have talked about it. It’s weird. I don’t know why. Um, and you didn’t go to it enough to me honestly in the second half, but I guess by that point, you know, you you Derek Queen didn’t play a lot in the second half. He only played 17 minutes on the game. Yeah. like you you you you didn’t play I think he played most of his minutes how many minutes he played in the second half. Yeah, seven minutes in the second half in totality. Crazy dog. That’s crazy. But um I I just I looked at the matchup of Zion and P Will and I’m like that’s one that works and it did. Like P Zion drew a foul early. Um Pee Will got a couple of blocks in there where or a couple of tough defended shots I should say. I don’t know if they counted them as blocks. Um, but like you you were playing them well. You were fronting him. Zion was losing the basketball. He was spinning off. Didn’t have options to get to the rim. Thought you did a really good job with that. And then you literally went let’s use let’s not use Patrick Williams on Zion in the second half. Like it it was an interesting choice. I guess maybe you’re saying in that sense like I need P. Will to start knocking down the three ball and clearly he’s not involved at all offensively because he’s trying to defend Zion on the other side. It didn’t help you much. Like at least you could have kept him under wraps, but it just I didn’t have a problem with it because of today’s or yesterday’s matchup. Yeah, I mean I don’t want to see that week in and week out. Yeah, you’re right. like and and if V is going to miss an extended period of time, I do think you’re going to give Jaylen a run and I think that’s the right thing to do. Um but you know, it was Billy Donovan looking at the matchups and seeing where PE will help at. And there was some success at it in like the first quarter and a half, but then things just fell down overall. I don’t know if I can blame just people starting at centers for the reason for like I said even though the Bulls got completely wasted on the rebounds they got rebounded by like 26 or something like that but off the top of my head last night it wasn’t it wasn’t due to them some massive size difference between the Bulls and the Pelicans it was just effort so in that sense I can’t blame like the Pelicans just gave way more effort more consistently than the Bulls and the Bulls played like a bunch of um can’t say the word that I want to yeah you probably Good. Uh, yeah. 22. He got I rebounded about 22 last night, dog. It’s I’m done talking about rotations. I’m done talking about when when effort is the problem, there’s no reason to talk about anything. Yeah. Nothing’s going to work. Yeah. Doesn’t matter what your rotate your rotations are terrible. Uh, you’re not adjusting. You’re not If I If the player that I take out and I put the other player in and he goes out there and he’s like, “Look at that guy go past me for that easy bucket.” Yeah. Exactly. Like I I get where people say the rotations. I understand it, but you can’t act like Billy Donovan didn’t try to adjust. He benched Modis Bonzelis in the second half. He didn’t start because that was an adjustment. That was literally an adjustment. Leaving Io out there for as long of a run that I was out there when I was actually cooking. He tried to ride the hot hand. But the effort as a whole, as the team was there and that and that’s the thing that’s the hardest thing to kind of judge, right, is you have to watch the game because it’s easy to look at a set of rotations, but ah that rotation was bad. But you have to watch the game to understand that yeah, he tried to you do some different and I’m not always defending Billy Donovan. He tried to do some different stuff and the effort was the same across the board. It seemed like nobody wanted to get their hands dirty last night. You need somebody who’s willing to get their hands dirty every single night. The Bulls don’t have that. And by the way, if my rotation that I planned has a player in it who doesn’t give a rat, you know what about that game that night, I have to make up a rotation on the fly. Like if if the rotation that I planned has Modis, P will IO, Giddy, and Noah Essenay and Modis comes out and plays like a fried turd, then guess what? All of a sudden, I’m going to look around and go, “Oh, I guess I can’t play Modis in there. Let’s throw Jaylen Smith into that mix.” Does that rotation make sense? No. But I’m trying to fix what I just threw out there that for some reason doesn’t want to show effort and I know I keep focusing on Madus. He’s the one that it’s showing the most through. Yeah. Now I I do want to ask you this Pat. Uh so we saw two minutes to get in Noah SN which isn’t crazy. Nothing of Lachlan Albbrick. Do you think in the way that this game was going, especially with the rebounds, should one of those guys have gotten a little bit more minutes to see because one of their best skills for Lachland and no SN is the rebounding aspect? Do you do you think that that’s something that that Billy Donovan should have tried to explore? I have my thought on it, but I want to hear yours first. I think when you when you get what you got out of the team last night as a whole, when you get a team that, you know, just wasn’t working hard on the boards, why not throw the the young rambunctious guy out there who wants to make a name for himself in the NBA, right? Like that’s always my thing. Sometimes you need a spark. Yeah. Sometimes you need a spark and last night you needed one in a major way. And I agree with that. I I look at it and I say like Noah Essing, we know he’s more slide to frame. I do think that like we haven’t seen Noah like he’s only I think two minutes this game, two minutes last game. I think you got to give him more time to see him build up that energy cuz it’s a lot to ask the youngest player in the NBA to come in and be like, “Bam, you got two minutes to go show me something.” Yeah, I haven’t played none. What are you looking at? But I also think that Lachlan Lachland is one thing that you nobody can knock Lachland for is that’s a tough sob and when you needed a little bit of toughness I would have liked to see him get a little bit of opportunity to see if he could have brought some of that edge especially against a Zion um you know when when he was working and stuff like that. I would have I would have liked to see that a little bit. No and and I don’t I don’t disagree with you in in that sense at all. Like I think here’s the thing. You you tried everything else that was different. Why not try Lachlan? Yeah. You know what I mean? like you you tried everything else. And by the way, last night was not a stellar night for Jaylen Smith on the defensive end either for everybody that was like, “Why didn’t Jaylen Smith play like Oh, Jaylen was getting cooked.” Yeah, bro. Like Jaylen was getting cooked. It’s it’s it’s one of those situations where to me honestly like there was no answer last night. And I’ll be honest with you, if you think Zack Collins is the difference, we got problems. like Zack Collins would have brought some toughness, too. I I do think I like Zack Collins a lot. Yeah, he’s not making up for the fact that you got outboarded by 22. If if the rebounding margin was more like five or six, it’s like, ah, okay, I can see it. Zack Collins, hey, all of a sudden, Zack Collins getting us 16 rebounds in a game. Zack Collins averages like seven, don’t he? Like something like that. He’s not even a double digit guy. I don’t know, man. Like it’s it’s one of those things to me where uh and I’m and I’m stalling because I I did not have my ad read up. Uh it’s one of those things to me where you shut your mouth. Uh if if you’re uh if you’re the Bulls right now, you you got to find answers in the pieces that you have that has have to play. Um but hey man, we’ll uh we got to finish this uh conversation out about the Bulls getting out. Worked way too often. I feel like this has been the entire podcast. [Music] All right, Pat, before we get up out of here, man, um I know we have talked a lot about the Bulls being outworked and spec specifically in like the last two, three games, Chicago Bulls are giving up over 60 points in the paint, second chance points, or give up the most second chance points in the league. How do they stop the bleeding, Pat? like is is there something that you can you see on this roster whether it be schematically, rotationally, or something that Billy Donovan, the coaching staff can do to try to fix how often we’re seeing the Bulls being over outworked, I should say. Yeah. Listen, there’s this thing that I mean with the NBA uh and with basketball in general that um is a very common theme. It’s two words. box out like give a dang about your job. Play basketball. Like how many times have we seen a like guards I we got 68 guards on our team that don’t box out? More times than not they’re the bigger of the of the two opponents and they don’t box out. We we like it’s a team effort and I can’t tell you how many times and and listen, I’ll be honest with you, that’s one thing we probably need to look up too. I bet you that’s probably why Billy be so pissed. I wonder what the rebounding disc discrepancy is when Modis is on the floor cuz I’ll be honest with you. Hey, I’m throwing his name back in there again. Boy, he gonna let somebody run past him, ain’t he? Boy, he ain’t even going to try. I saw I saw a shot go up. Modus was running down the court. offensive board bucket minus has been rebound I think he’s averaging almost six rebounds he has been rebounding better for him but oh when he runs to the rim and and like uses his athleticism and size and like everything that we saw him use last he’s a good rebounder again it comes down to want to and it comes down to just effort and in the the totality of the game again I said this going in you will lose these games if you think you’re a better team than you You will lose these games if you are a better if you think that you are a good basketball team. You’re not a good basketball team. You got to work to be a good basketball team. You have the talent to do it. We saw it. We saw you beat playoff teams until playoff teams started caring and then all of a sudden you stopped. I don’t know if you thought Ms were going to get scared by a 6 and0 start, but they did not. So, you got to wake up like the the the amount of times I see guys not boxed out. I mean, listen, like it’s it’s shocking that these mothers are in the NBA. I could go out there and box out. I ain’t saying I’m going to be good at it, but I will try to box out. V be down there getting double team like a Mariah Mills video. Zion Williamson and Porn Star. All right. I think that that that that’s it. I think we’ve reached the line there, Pat. Um I think we seen it. Uh hopefully this team continues to get healthy. Yeah, I did. We got two more games this week, Friday and Saturday, back to back and then uh they’re hoping Zack Collins is going to be back in practice by the beginning of next week. So, we could see this team finally at full health in December. See what that brings for this team as far as change, but they definitely got to get some things tighten up if they want to still have a chance to make the playoffs this season. So, we’ll see what happens with this move. We’ll see. Anything left back playoff. Now we reach the line. Now we’ve reached the line. Now we’ve reached the line. Now we’ve reached the line. Play off. That’s the line. We’re done. Social get the shake comment is Oh, the Shay comment. I didn’t even see Shay this time. I can box out and I got wobbly knee. Yep. That’s it. We’re done. Go ahead, Pat. Let’s unlock Bulls on everything. You can follow me on everything at Pat the Designer. Uh, thank God there’s no game tonight. Appreciate y’all for tuning in to show love. Chicago Bulls unravel against the New Orleans Pelicans, exposing an alarming lack of effort and team chemistry. What’s behind Chicago’s struggle to win close games despite having talent like Nikola Vucevic, Patrick Williams, and Ayo Dosunmu? Haize and Pat the Designer spotlight the Bulls’ rebounding woes, Modestas Kanter’s defensive liabilities, and the squad’s apparent disinterest in getting “their hands dirty” on both ends of the court.
The hosts question whether Billy Donovan’s voice still matters in the locker room and discuss his bold moves—like starting Patrick Williams at center—in a bid to spark change. Key talking points include the Bulls’ NBA-worst margin on the boards, second-chance points surrendered, and whether young bigs like Noah Essengue or Lachlan Olbrich deserve more minutes. Can Chicago rediscover its grit and salvage playoff hopes, or is this the start of a deeper crisis?

Where is the PRIDE and LEADERSHIP on this team! Sloppy and undisciplined play is not acceptable. Donovan and GM need to get this team on the right track.
Pat said it too they were gonna lose a trap game
Why wont they use Jalen Smith more?
Been telling yall Billy Donovan a bummmmm
I wouldn’t even say it’s effort. You have 9-10 guys who are good but that doesn’t mean they’re exceptional on offense and defense. You basically have 9-10 above average players on both sides of the ball. That doesn’t translate to wins as much as having elite players.
Not having an athletic defensive oriented center is obviously a big part of the problem. But even worse, you couple that with the fact we don’t have a true Power Forward OF ANY KIND and this is what you get. Our front court is horribly lacking, especially when we have a back court who struggles to stay in front of of offensive players. The Knicks found this out in the 2nd game against them and the league picked up on it. It’s going to be a long and frustrating season if something dramatic doesn’t change.
Singling out Matas is comical. No one on the Bulls roster plays defense. Zero. Giddey chasing triple doubles, Coby trying to be Kobe on offense. Vucevic the laziest player in the NBA putting his teammates on blast for being lazy. Matas is a waste on the Bulls it’s a toxic atmosphere filled with non stars trying to be stars.
They need to stop letting the refs dictate their effort
Bulls need a superstar to be good.
Coby White dribbled the ball off his foot like PWill, plus other stupid turnovers under pressure
I didn't like Pat Williams starting. I think Jalen should've started the game
We need to restart the boycott movement. We don’t need different players, we don’t need a different coach. We need a complete rebuild across the board from management down. Obviously we can’t change ownership but we are the people that make this franchise function and we have power if we work together #NoSeatsNoExcuses!!!!!
Guys, y’all know what the problem is. OUR Bulls team have too many white guys on the team…. ONLY Matas is Athletic………
Try to get number one pick and get 7 foot center
They need a Pookie or RayRay on this team. 😅
There’s no super star , what do you expect, there is so much money to spend and they are sitting not doing anything
The game actually started with Josh on Queen and Pat on Zion and Matas was guarding Tre Murphy and based off of the size that wasn't a bad start to the game and we saw the Pelicans use the first time out but after that it went downhill fast. But again that was just the first few minutes of the game and then throughout the game they were switching defensive matchups and then they were also switching where they would get stuck on certain guys as well but overall what I saw was lack of chemistry and communication and everything last night on defense and unfortunately the boxing out was terrible again and it's not just one guy but Coby specifically has to box out better he didnt at least twice and NO scored both times giddey also gave up 2 rebs thats 4 of the 22 off rebs and that's just the ones that I remember
Starting PW over Jalen Smith and Smith playing 1 less minute than him even though he out played PW is a great start to point the finger at Billy Donovan for this loss
It seems matas just want his 19ppg, once he gets it he feels his mission is complete
It's crazy how in the modern NBA "the most highly skilled players ever" can't dribble, cut to the basket, box out, hold on to a rebound or play in that magical area between the paint and the 3 point line. It's become an ugly game and so hard to watch.
Bulls are playing scared 😲
We could definitely use Zach. I think he could be a big spark the team needs. He’s had great chemistry with Giddey
LIKE WHAT I SAID REPLACE BILLY DONAVAN….GET A GOOD BIG CENTER PLAYER WHO CAN OFFENSIVE REBOUND AND DEFENSE…
I AGREE WITH HIM 100 PERCENT..THESE BULLS PLAYERS THEY DONT PUT A LOT OF EFFORT TO WIN THIS GAME ….YEAH WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN THE NBA COLLECTING MONEY
The guys aren’t protecting the glass and there are no rebounds. There’s absolutely no defense. It’s so frustrating
I don’t believe it’s an effort issue, but rather a physical size issue. Players like Coby, Pwill, Terry and Matas go to the basket and crash into a wall of defenders; they kick the ball out and turn over. On the defensive side, they’re mismatches almost all the time. Matas is like a ping pong ball; every time a big body comes close to him he gets out of the picture. Zero resistance. Matas is a great player but needs to develop his body to play bb; same with Noa.
Bulls are just what they are year after year a 500 team going nowhere!!!
Bro I stopped following the Bulls a couple of years ago and now I realize you are still with Billy Donovan? 💀
