Saturday Leftovers-The Three MOST Asked Questions about the Milwaukee Brewers at Thanksgiving Dinner

The three most asked questions about the Milwaukee Brewers that was asked around the Thanksgiving dinner table. I’ll have answers to all three coming up next here on Locked On Brewers. You are Locked On Brewers, your daily Milwaukee Brewers podcast, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day. Hey everybody, welcome to Lockdown Brewers. My name is Chuck Freeman, longtime sports cer in the state of Wisconsin. Proud host of Locked On Brewers, part of the Locked On podcast network. We are your team every day. Locked on. The Lockdown On Network, the number one sports podcasting network out there. And great to be a part of it. Coming up on the show today, the three questions regarding the Milwaukee Brewers that I’ve been asked in around I guess a lot of Thanksgiving dinner tables. We’ll get to all three. The spending, will the Brewers spend any money? and this latest debacle that we heard on Thanksgiving night. Um, we’ll also talk about Freddy Peralta. Will Freddy get traded? And number three, the first question I get asked always when you especially you don’t see somebody in a while. What happened to the Brewers in Los Angeles? We’re still asking that question. All right. Good to have you along here. as the snow falls in Wisconsin. We’re dropping an episode here on Saturday afternoon and uh some of you guys are locked in. Have nowhere to go. Uh I will be back in Wisconsin tomorrow. So I’ll have to deal with that then. But until then, we’re going to talk a little bit Milwaukee Brewers baseball here today and try to try to sum up some of these answers here on the three biggest things. the three biggest questions asked around. Of course, there was others as well, but you know what? I’m gonna start with I’m going to start with the spending first of all when the Athletic the other day, Thursday night, there was that story that the Brewers, and I did a podcast on this yesterday, that the Brewers were not going to be able to spend any money here in the off season because of the money that is committed to Brandon Woodruff that he took the qualifying offer. people for the most part are disgusted in that right if that’s true now I think the Brewers when there’s going to be media availability when any of these guys are available whether it’s Pat Murphy or whatever and right now you can’t get a hold of any of these guys for answers because they’re not around right they’re not available probably at the baseball winner meetings is the first shot to get um reaction from Pat Murphy specifically Matt Arnold the general manager and I’m and I’m sure he’s going to deny this he is not going to come out and say, “Well, you know what? That report is right because we did not expect Woodruff to take the qualifying offer of 22 million and therefore we don’t have any money to spend and we’re trying to trade Freddy Peralta.” He’s not going to say that. Here’s what he will say. Oh god, we’re delighted to have a picture of Woody’s stature back. You know, obviously we need him to stay healthy. He’s not going to say, “Well, we need Freddy or we need Woodruff back. If he doesn’t stay healthy, we’ll be wasting $22 million.” I mean, that’s what probably behind closed doors, they all say, but obviously they didn’t expect him to pick up the the qualifying offer on that. And um I think that’s going to hurt their spending here in the offseason. I don’t think it’s going to be a real active off season anyway for the Milwaukee Brewers. I really don’t. In fact, I think a lot of Major League Baseball teams are going to go down this road because of the potential of a lockout in 2027. I get it. Been down this road before. I’ve seen this. So, and I and I, like I said yesterday’s podcast, that’s one of the reasons why Woodruff is coming back. There was no team willing to risk a multi-year deal on a guy who’s coming off another shoulder issue. And I, you know, didn’t finish the season. So, why would you want to give a two or threeear contract on that? Any team to do that would be foolish. And I think teams I think teams are becoming smarter on that. You know, the teams that can’t help themselves. Well, there’s still few guy there’s a few guys out there that, you know, teams out there that, you know, they can’t help themselves like the Mets and the Yankees. You know, they’re tripping over themselves um to sign guys uh and and give away large amounts of the Toronto Blue Jays apparently are that team right now as well. Overpaying for Dylan CE. We’ll see how that works out in like a few years down the road in ad contract. But the Brewers will never be the team to spend money in the offseason. They will never be that team. I mean, you know it and I know it. Uh the the most that they’ll spend obviously like a Reese Hoskins deal. They just had to have a first baseman and they wait for the price to drop a couple of years ago and finally it dropped for that two years 34 million which was about their range. That’s about the like the max they’re going to offer somebody, right? So, yeah, the Woodruff the Woodruff thing is probably going to neutralize these guys a little bit in the offseason. Now, I don’t see where trading Freddy Peralta has anything to do with that, right? I mean, because he’s only making $8 million a year, unless you think you need to trade him now so you get more controllable talent down the road, so you can save even more money. But it doesn’t send a good message to the fans when single game tickets go on sale when you know they’re trying to the Milwaukee Brewers are trying to market their team towards the season ticket holders get renews get new people. I’m getting phone calls was a 20 game package ticket holder for many years and um I still get a lot of calls I get a lot of calls uh from the Milwaukee Brewers. Hey, we want to do this, this, this, this, want to do this for you. Um, so when those salespeople are trying to make you a pitch and you the news comes out that the team is not going to be spending money, you’re like, well, why would I want to go see the team play if they’re not investing in the team? So, the Brewers will always say, oh, that falses, that report is false. We’re going to do what we have to do to help this baseball team. Of course. And with Freddy, they’ve already said the company line with Freddy. Well, back at the season ending press conference a couple of days after the Dodgers series, they were like, “We have to explore all the all moves. We have to explore everything. Everything is always on the table. Everything.” And that’s going to be the case with Freddy Peralta. And there’s reports obviously a couple of weeks ago like from Bob Nightingale that the Brewers were not going to trade Peralta. But now I mean who knows really. One guy says Peralta is going to get traded. Next thing you know another media outlet says well they’re going to trade Peralta because they they didn’t expect Woodruff to pick up his $22 million option or his qualifying offer. So yeah, the Brewers were spending in the offseason. We should know this. They weren’t going to spend much money anyway. And yeah, I bet you the the Woodrip thing does curtail their spending in the off season. I’m disgusted by it. I’m disgusted at the fact that they can’t spend more than $136 million on payroll. Should be upwards 160 170. There’s no reason why it can’t be. And we’re never showing the books. The media’s never showing the books. We’re never shown the books. The Brewers never showed their books when they were trying to get a new stadium 30 years ago. Certainly, they’re not going to talk about it now. All right, number two. The number two most asked questions. Kind of touched on it a little bit. Freddy Peralta, is Freddy getting traded? Is Freddy getting traded? Obviously, this is something we’re going to talk about a lot. Um, and what is what would the Brewers get in return for Freddy Peralta? I would say this, I would give it about a 50/50 chance about the Brewers trading Freddy Peralta. If it was me, obviously I want to keep Freddy on this team. But if you are bowled over in a deal, if one of those teams out there just like the Yankees or Mets who are looking at a starting pitcher are and and those are the kind of teams you have by the you know what, right? Because those teams can’t help themselves. They just want to spend, spend, spend, and they’ll give away stuff and uh they’ll overspend whether it’s on players or sending prospects away or players. And the Brewers have already traded obviously with the Yankees, the Devin Williams deal last year, and the Brewers got the better end of that deal. And the Yankees, well, that didn’t work out so well with Deon Williams in New York. But the Brewers got Durban and Cortez. they were able to spin off and get Lockage. So, um, yes, I think it’s about a 50-50 chance the Brewers will trade Peralta, but here’s what I think you need. You need you need a position player who can who’s got the potential to start on this team. you know, a guy who who you think could maybe win us possibly a starting spot in the outfield, left field, maybe not a definite, but a guy who, you know, is fits this Brewer mold of a guy who can be smart at the plate, hopefully some pop, work the counts better than he did in that Dodger series, but they did for the most part of the the entire season. That’s the kind of guy they’re looking for. The Brewers are good at doing that. So, I think you need that. You need a position player. You need an expiring contract because you’re going to take that off their hands. Like the Yankees giving Cortez uh the Brewers Cortez, they were that was an expiring contract, right? And the Brewers weren’t going to resign him just like the trade the breads did with the Brewers a few years ago getting Montis or Montis. Uh and the Brewers were never going to resign him. But a guy like a Cortez who the Brewers can have and maybe for a season and then who knows maybe spin off another trade down the road like they did with Cortez. And then you got to have a really good prospect. I think you got to ask for a lot for Peralta more so than you did with Corbett Burns, more so than you did with Deon Williams. I think the Trey Peralta since you’re getting him for 8 million 17 wins a year ago, fifth in the Sai Young. I want a lot back for Freddy. I want back a lot for Freddy. Otherwise, I’m happy to keep him. You could trade him, but you better bid. I want three people back for him. I want maybe another outfielder. I want a good prospect. and I’ll take on one of your expiring pitcher contracts that you don’t want. That’ll be the favor I do. But that’s uh that’s what I’m looking at. We come back, we’ll address the final most popular question that was asked around the dinner table this Thanksgiving. That’s next here on Lockdown Brewers. Right. One more question I was asked. Number one, and this is this is especially for the people that you haven’t seen in a while, which usually happens around Thanksgiving. Chuck, what happened to the Brewers in Los Angeles? Just like last year, Chuck, what happened to the Brewers against the Mets? What happened to the Brewers against the Diamondbacks? Well, I think even this year more so. What happened to the Brewers against the Dodgers because they were flying so good. Yeah, that playoff loss still stings. That’s going to sting for a while, right? Getting swept by the Dodgers and doing so many things. I always ask the person, what do you think happened? What What did you see? How we just didn’t hit? And Shi Show broke out of his slump. Yeah. Show had the game of uh any best game out of any major league or Major League Baseball history. Nothing you can do by that. But the Brewers already down 03 anyway in that game in that series. Yeah. Didn’t hit didn’t do the things they were doing offseason. Uh played those four games like they had never played together or team baseball or fundamental baseball all season long. They got away from fundamentals. They played poorly. And on the national stage when the Brewers had this big buildup of 97 wins, they laid a mammoth egg. But we got to move on. Got to move on. But yeah, that Dodgers series loss is still going to stick. And I still get questions about it. People are still discussing it. And I get it because we invested in a big season and a 97 win team. And there’s one thing to lose in a series. There’s another thing to get lose in four games without a fight. you go down losing in six or seven like that the Blue Jays series, the World Series, the Blue Jays put up a heck of a fight in that series. And I know, yeah, the Dodgers came back and won the final two games. All right, but still Toronto took Los Angeles to seven. No reason why the Brewers could have done something like that, right? How did Toronto Brewers beat Toronto during the regular season? They took two or three from them in Toronto. No reason why the Brewers should have gone down in a whimper like that. Yeah. And if that The four game sweep doesn’t motivate the front office. I don’t want to hear this. Oh well, just lost to the big market Dodgers. That’s not good enough. All right, everybody. We’re going to have an episode coming back tomorrow. Short episode on a weekend lockdown brewers, but I wanted to answer a few questions that uh were bantered about the Thanksgiving dinner table spending Peralta trade and what happened to the Brewers in Los Angeles. I’ll have a couple of leftovers on tomorrow’s show. Until then, have yourself a great Saturday, everybody. Stay safe in the snowstorm. My name is Chuck Freeman. Locked on Brewers, part of Lockdown Podcast Network. We are your team every day.
