White Sox could BREAK 2026 FanGraphs’ ZiPS projection with key free agent SIGNINGS

One projection system loves the White Socks plan for next season, and that’s with the club not making any meaningful additions yet. So, there’s a possibility that the 2026 season could be better than what’s forecasted. You are Locked on White Socks, your daily Chicago White Socks podcast, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day. Hello, I’m Todd Welter. Welcome to Lockdown White Socks, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, now the number one sports podcast network. I’m a lifelong socks fan. Been podcasting here for over a year and a half and covering the team well before then and also I’ve covered Major League Baseball for outlets such as the Associated Press. Well, I’m going to get to this week’s fan poll Friday and go over what you every day voted on when it comes to some offseason decisions like pursuing Adeliss Garcia and free agency and Luis Robert Jr.’s future with the team after I share with you some interesting insights about how the White Sox could use the overseas market to improve their pitching. But first, let’s discuss the ZIP’s projection on the White Socks that just came out that does project some internal improvement, but also does not include any potential for agent editions, leaving the chance 2026 could be even better than what is forecasted. Today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time. Download the Game Time app, create an account, use code lock on MLB for $20 off your first purchase. Well, Fan Graph says Dan Zorski has already released his Zip’s projections for the White Sox 2026 season. and first simulations turned out that the White Sox for the first time in a while is going to have no one sporting a negative war. The talent floor continues to be raised, people, let’s celebrate that. Well, I mean, moral victory. But the other thing that stands out to me is the projections that he ran doesn’t include any free agent additions that the team has yet to make. So, there’s the possibility that the club could be better than what it Zips is projecting. So, here is what the projection has to say about how the war will shake out for the Chicago White Sox lineup next season. And the first takeaway is the overall value should be better than what was projected for the 2025 season as you can see. And I’ve got the tweet that um Dan Zaborski shared at Duborski. And again, the biggest standout is they’re definitely going to be better than what was projected in 2025 because when you take a look at what he had out on 2025, the biggest takeaway was Luis Robert Jr. was going to be the only star player and obviously he fell short of that with a very inconsistent 2025 season. But the bullpen was projected to be awful. A minus 1.6 F4 projection for the total group. Now, you know, to give you a little bit of hope, they did beat the projection in that they at least were overall pretty solid for what they ran out. They were just terrible in high lever situations. But then for those watching on YouTube, I’ve got the graphic back up. You’re definitely seeing a huge jump for Shane Smith next season. He’s projected to have at least a 2.6 F4. It really likes the shortstop duo of Coulson Montgomery and then obviously Chase Maid backing him up on days that maybe you give, you know, Coulson a day off or you move him to third base. But they definitely think there’s some value there with a 2.7 F4 finish. And he still likes Luis Robert Jr. with Derrick Hill backing him up with a 2.7 F4. But look at the jump that he has in the bullpen. A 2.4 F4 finish. And if that happens, hopefully that leads to more wins next season. But here’s the biggest takeaway that he had in his writeup. The 2025 White Socks performed the very weird dual feat of being one of baseball’s most improved teams compared to 2024 and losing more than 100 games. There wasn’t much in the way of quality baseball on the southside. But the Socks actually had enough things go their way this time around that they didn’t perform at the low end of their talent level. There are even a few things to like about the team, even enough to motivate fans to turn on a game out of more than morbid curiosity. One thing you’ll notice when looking at the depth chart below, no negative numbers. That’s a pretty low baseline, but the Socks have added enough talent that they’re clearly better than any of the teams in the International League. And while it’s sad, at the same point now, it’s somewhat encouraging because think about how bad the White Socks were in 2024. That there was this feeling that aa team in the International League or the Pacific Coast League probably had more value and more talent. You know, maybe the I think at one point the DA Birmingham Barons were probably better than the 2024 White Socks. So obviously you’re starting to see that now trickle up to the big league level. And the main takeaway though that I’ve discussed is and kind of emphasizes this projection. As you saw the White Sox still have not made any major free agent additions. So they have the room to add more. They have the room to really beat this projection because remember right now the payroll is only projected to be around 56 million per spot rack. And if gets if GM Chris gets is authorized to go to say like 90 million like socksachine.com has been using for their offseason project pan plan for fans to fill out which I highly recommend that you do or even if it’s as low as the 77 million that the payroll finished at at 2025 or even if it’s around I think it was like the opening day payroll I’ve seen project you know that it was somewhere between 87 and 89 million either way get should have 21 million to 34 million to use in the off season. And I would love for Jerry to authorize like, let’s say, a hund00 million payroll because if he gives his general manager that much money, obviously you’re now looking at 44 million to work with and that could provide a better veteran supporting cast around this young core. And that is why with the right signings, you know, this club could beat these projections. But key word right and another key word signings because it would be organizational negligence to enter the season with say a 56 $57 million payroll. I think it would be organizational negligence for the team to just be like well we’re just going to do a couple more waiverwire pickups and some non-roster invites. You know I don’t want internal improvement being the excuse to not make some upgrades to the rotation. Even though again I’m going to bring up the uh graphic though, Zips does project again at least a raised floor season for Davis Martin at 1.6 and a possibly decent year for Shawn Burke at 1.2. But then you see they’re factoring in Jonathan Cannon. They’re factoring in um you know Duncan Davitt and Drew Thorp eventually coming off the ent list and then Tanner McDougall. Obviously, I would love to see Tanner McDougall at some point in the season make his debut and maybe even, you know, Hagen Smith and Noah Schultz, but I think if you want to give yourself a chance to obviously jump in the standings, add two more veteran free agents. And I’ll even discuss, you know, two starters that they could target in the second segment. And a 2.5 F4 bullpen. That looks nice, but let’s make some more additions to up that war and make sure the club can win more of those close games. Cuz remember, they were only had 15 wins in games decided by a single runs and they were in a lot of them, 51 of them. So, you could get that 15 that 10 to 15 win improvement that I think everybody is actually expecting by winning more of those close games by upgrading your talent there. Now, first place clearly needs to be upgraded as even though it didn’t work out to be a one point F4 or one F4 season that um Zimorski projected in uh 2025, you can see going back to what he projects, you have.7 war for Lenin Sosa, Miguel Vargas, and Curtis Me. Although I think those in reality would do much better at the plate than Andrew Vaughn did on the south side. And I also got a feeling the low war projection is actually Sosa’s defense. But still, go get an upgrade. Even if it is Rice Hoskins or Ryan O’Harn, or man, the dream is Kazuma Okamoto. That would just be the dream. But just use this off seasonason as an opportunity to improve in the standings because I know I’ve been saying wins and losses don’t matter next season. Obviously, internal improvement does, but enhance the roster and also enhance the roster. again, you could get maybe that 15 game win increase because I do think that should be an expectation. Let’s get to 70 75 wins. So that way we know that this rebuild is going in the right direction. Well, my buddy Bezek Zakuri was on the show a few days ago and I had to cut some of what we discussed for time. And I’m going to run that portion today as he had some interesting insights on how the White Sox could get some upgrades using the overseas markets and that’s coming up after the break. The NFL season is in full swing. And honestly, there’s nothing better than being in the stadium surrounded by fans cheering on your team. But let’s be honest, getting tickets, that can be a hassle. Between cues, login screens, and prices jumping at checkout, it’s frustrating. That’s why I use Game Time, the app that gives the advantage back to fans. Game Time is fast, easy, and backed by the Game Time Guarantee. You’ll always get 100% authentic tickets delivered on time and at the best price. Plus, all fees are included. So, the price you see is the price you pay. I pulled up Game Time, and in just a couple taps, I saw amazing deals. I’m talking about your favorite NFL games for as low as $100. I also recently used Game Time to get a great deal on 10 tickets for when Milwaukee took on Los Angeles and Luca Donuch. My brother-in-law, nephew, niece, and their side of the family. And I, we all got a great deal through the app to sit together and watch Giannis and Luca battle it out. Wasn’t a headache to find 10 seats close together, and it also had a great view of the game. Honestly, it’s faster, cheaper, and less stressful than any other way I bought tickets. Download the Game Time app, create an account, and use code locked on MLB for $20 off your first purchase. Also, make sure to check out my rigging content at southsidsockoxs.com and on tapsportsnet.com. And Bezuri from ontapsportsnet.com was on the show with me a few days ago and I had to cut some of our conversation for time and I want to bring back that portion as Bez had a good point on how the White Sox could get uh a little bit better in the rotation by tapping into the overseas markets. Anthony K a y and uh as a as an e expert scholar on uh Japan’s uh baseball uh professional baseball league. He’s a guy who was a Mets prospect much like Mike Vassel was. Um, and went over, bounced around the league, went over there, revamped his whole, you can find the article on onportsnet.com, and revamped his arsenal, got a huge ground ball rate. He’s left-handed, doesn’t throw super hard, sits like mid 90s, which nowadays isn’t really that hard. Um, but he’s got a two seamer, he’s got a sinker, uh, a a work in progress curve ball, load of ground balls, and that seemed to be the recipe for success for a handful of White Sox pitchers were guys that could not strike out many hitters. They had a few too many walks, but damn it, if they didn’t get a bunch of ground balls and get out of trouble. Um, so that is a guy I’ll say they’re going to sign him because I want him because I want him. and he was a bit of a workhorse there too. Like 150 innings the last two years. So I don’t have to worry about like last year where we were in like the end of June, beginning of July and like all of our starting pitchers were already at career highs and in innings pitched. Um so hopefully we uh we get him because he can fill those innings and you know he’s he’s you know don’t if they do get him I’m not saying he’s like a number two starter or anything like that. He’s like a, you know, at best a number three, most likely a number four who uh can give you those respectable 150 innings throughout an entire season. Well, I mean, so my prediction is I think they’re going to sign one of the uh you know, former guys that flamed out, went to Japan or Korea and came back, whether it’s him or like Cody Pon because the other thing is they’ve got the recruiting tool of it’s already worked for us. Eric Fetty worked for us. We got something out of Eric Fetty. The only thing is is, you know, pitching one day a week, there could be some exhaustion towards the end because remember Eric Fetty uh even admitted uh that he was gassed once he went to the Cardinals. I mean, because it’s been a while when you have to pitch two days a week. But I do agree with you that whether it’s Kay, whether it’s Pona, who is it? Weiss is the other guy I think is uh coming back. Yeah. Those I think they they should one of the two because they got to get two veteran starters in my opinion. It can’t be just one. It’s got to be two because I just don’t trust Jonathan Cannon. I think Tanner McDougall, you want to build up his arm because uh you had him on an innings limit towards the end of the year. So, I do think that if you want him to be a starter, which I think he should, he should be on an innings limit. I mean, not an innings limit, his arm should be built up so he can take the starter load of whoever you trade because that’s the other thing. Some of these guys you could flip. So, you need at least two. And I think that one of those guys is probably going to be in it. And then, you know what would shock me? they take they try to take another run at a a Mike Vassel or Shane Smith in the rule five. That would not surprise me at all in how they fill out the rotation. Although again, I would love for them to spend a little bit of money on a bargain starter. Uh couple of things that I’ll add. One, uh I think Cody Pon probably goes to a like midlevel contender. I think you know he proved well enough that somebody is going to you know out bid the White Socks. Um, but I could, you know, still totally possible. Um, you mentioned uh Mike Vassel. I could I I’m usually a if it’s not broke, don’t fix it kind of guy, but he had a lot of innings last year and I would not mind one bit if they tried to throw him out there as their number five starter. Just a guy who say try to give us five innings. Maybe he doesn’t make it five. Maybe he gives you four and a third, four and two/3s. then he’s just it’s like a glorified bullpen day. Uh anyways, which is kind of about what the workload was for him uh last year, like 110ish innings. So, there’s that. And I would not have any issue whatsoever if they wanted to give Adrien Hower another shot. Yeah. I mean, I I think giving Adrien Hower another shot or if it’s combined Adrien Hower and Martine Perez to cover for the first couple of months, I’m not opposed to that. Like, I get why they said no to Martine Pres’s 10 million. Everybody knew that. But yeah, like those two guys, that would be fine. They they just need some innings to be eaten up in the first half because fingers crossed. Fingers crossed. You know, I’m kind of skeptics. If everything goes well, you’re going to be looking at probably Noah Schultz and Hagen Smith and Tanner McDougall hopefully all making their major league debuts, whether it’s in the rotation or the bullpen, but hopefully the rotation. And Drew Thorp might be back. I mean, that’s another guy that we can’t forget because of that elite uh change up that he has, even though he doesn’t have the velocity and maybe now cleaning up his elbow. Um might actually get his that fast ball back up to 94. I forgot. I think it was uh Eli, the pitching coach at DoubleA, he said in an interview once, I think it was with Chuck Garfine, that that bone spur may have been impinging that was only allowing him to throw 9091 on his fast ball, but he can get up he report said he could get up to 94. The problem is it just has no movement. So, he’s got to get 94 otherwise it gets tattooed, right? He needs to do get it up to 94. He needs to develop a third pitch to kind of keep people off of that fast ball and maybe pitch backwards like, you know, leading with a a slider or or a curve or a two seam or something um to keep people off of that fast ball because it’s not very good. Um I I am not very high on Drew Thorp. I think eventually his destination is the bullpen. very very good change up. But um the rest of the repertoire there if he doesn’t develop something above average then I I think that’s kind of where he ends up and that might not be a bad thing. Um because you need guys like that too. Um I I agree with you too. I think we’re going to see Hagen Smith and Noah Schultz this year. Uh I I didn’t say we they’d be good but we’ll see him this year. So So fingers crossed. And you’ve got the other guy, uh, Preellander Baroa, who was like the favorite to be the closer going into last year, had Tommy John. We’ll probably see him mid-season, too. So, you got some arms coming back and some prospects coming up. The the pitching um development will be will be interesting. I just hope that um I just hope they can find the way to scratch across the runs. It’s Friday, so let’s do a fan poll Friday going over what you think about the White Socks possibly pursuing Adelis Garcia and Luis Robert Jr.’s future. And that’s coming up after the break. The NBA is back and there’s no better place to get on the action than FanDuel, the official sports betting partner of the NBA. Even if you miss the start of the game or want to ride the hot hand, FanDuel has live bets on everything from who will score next to fourth quarter comebacks. Plus, you can even combine your live bets into a same game parlay for a shot at a bigger payout. and it keeps every game exciting, especially when your team’s making that late push. And I’m always telling you about how fun it is to play FanDuel’s traditional money lines over unders and spreads. But if you want to win some big time money, or at least double or triple your cash, play FanDuel’s props, parlays, or futures. Think the Bulls can ride this good start to a nonexpected 50 plus win season. Well, that’s at plus 490 the last time I checked. So, you could possibly turn as little as $10 into 49 bucks if that does happen. But say you’re more realistic and you think the Bulls will do what they normally do, and that is have over 40 wins and make the playin game. Well, you can combine that into a parlay to increase the potential of a better payout if that does happen. Right now, FanDuel is giving new customers $300 in bonus bets when your first $5 bet wins. So, head to fanduel.com to sign up and play your game with FanDuel, the official sports betting partner of the NBA. Welcome back to Lockdown White Sox. I’m your host, Todd Welter. The everydayer club that I will hope that you’re going to subscribe to. More details will be coming out shortly, but be on the lookout for the Everydayer Club. Also, hope that you had a great Thanksgiving. Uh I saw some people in the comments on yesterday’s uh YouTube uh page for the episode that, hey, I did something on Thanksgiving. Hey, like I said, I’m here five days a week. I made sure to record a show so if you were driving that you had some whitesiz content to listen to. So I hope that the turkey was good or if you prefer ham or some, you know, prime rib. I hope it was good. Uh mine I went down to my sister’s in Illinois, so I was in Illinois. Uh had some delicious turkey. Um they also did a ham. Uh I made my scallop potatoes for my wife. I did learn how to make scallop potatoes at one point because I know how much she loves it. So, you know, those are the little things that I do to make sure my wife knows she’s loved and that. So, um had a really good uh Thanksgiving there. Well, the Luis Robert Jr. voting his future that the club uh with his future on the club makes me feel vindicated in a way, at least to the Robert Jr. truthers that said I was dunking on him because I ran a poll on the um YouTube page asking what do you think about Luis Robert Jr.’s future? And an overwhelming majority of you thought probably much online what I think and a lot of you everyday really want Otis Garcia over Christopher Morurell because I asked you on that on the YouTube channel page and again I’m going over this week’s fan polls that I ran on the YouTube uh channel page there and I asked you which non-tender player would you like to see the White Socks sign and 81% of you said Ottoise over 19% going with Christopher Morurell. Although I probably should have added uh the White Socks could use both option because honestly I still think that’s what the White Sox should do. They should add both of them. You know, there’s nothing wrong with kicking the tires on a 26-year-old Christopher Morurell. I mean, if he doesn’t work out, like I said, you just DFA him during the season or you just non-tender him at the end of the season. It’s a perfect kicking on the tires. But I definitely agree with you in let’s get Adiss Garcia. The defense is still there. The power obviously though it’s declining but there’s still the chance for power and again they need a short-term option in right field because going back to the first segment and I’ll show the graphic again. Zips has a8 F4 projection out of what I believe uh Zorski was trying to say Brooks Baldwin and Braden Montgomery because I’m not sure who the heck Balder Matrey is. No idea what that guy is. Never heard of him. But I think, you know, if you could get an upgrade in right field, even short term, and even if he’s going to be a little bit more than say what they could have gotten for Mike Tman, there’s at least the possibility for a a guy who will be playing more than Mike Tman, because Mike Tman’s legs were starting to go. That that’s a big reason why Mike Tman got n tender. I bet you if Mike Tman produced the same production he did in 93 games over let’s say 135 games, Mike Tman would be on this roster next season. He would be still the bridge option. But he only played 93 games. And while yes, the White Socks, you know, the payroll decisions, they could absorb his 3.4 million, standard logic could still apply in the case of Mike Tman. And that 3.4 4 million for him in a payroll that like I’ve talked about in the first segment that might be as much as 90 million. Well, you could probably want to use that 3.4 million for a guy that’s probably going to play more than 93 games. You know, you probably want to be again, even last year, they only paid Michael A. Taylor 100 million or not 100 million, 1 million. Wow, that would be a huge overpay. They’ve never paid a guy 100 million, but they paid Michael Taylor, Michael A. Taylor 1 million and Austin Slater 1.5. And then they paid Mike Tman 2.2. So basically they paid three players $3.4 million. So but if that’s what the cost would be for Adelise Garcia or if it’s even6 million or 7 million, I think you should do that though in that case because again he could be an everyday player because he’s played no less than 135 games the past couple of seasons. You’re just milking the last hopeful good ounces of baseball out of his career and you’re hoping he hits for power. And if he hits for enough power, you’re hoping to flip him at the deadline. Even if it is for uh Gerald Rossardio, like what happened with um Paul D. Young, it’s still worth, you know, the the juice is still worth the squeeze as they say. But for you guys saying that I was dunking on Luis Robert Jr., you know that, oh, you accept it and I did. I think that was very clear. I just didn’t like the process. And I’m not dunking on anybody else saying, hey, uh, Luis Roberts here. It’s a moronic take. But I’m just saying the overwhelm overwhelming majority, at least in this sample, agrees that it’s time to move on from Luis Robert Jr. because I asked, should the White Sox trade Luis Robert Jr. if they get an offer featuring major league talent? And 54% of you said yes, it’s time to move on. 34% of you only said we’re moving on if the return is top prospects. And only 12% said no, keep him. And again, perfectly fine with him staying on the team. But if another contender possibly gives up some big league talent, young big league talent, like say, you know, the Mets offering Mark Ventos, Orani Mauricio, make the deal. take the deal, dude. Although, you know, there is a possibility that he could have a decent season next year, Luis Robert Jr., so that’s why again you could take the risk cuz uh here’s what Dan Zorski wrote in his Zips projection write up. Surprisingly, Zips thinks Luis Robert Jr. still has a decent amount of upside left and the socks might as well play them and see since I don’t believe any team is going to be willing to pay the paddle hose what they’d want to part with them which is why again I’m fine with bringing them back at least for one more season even if it’s at 5 million more to see if the upside is still there and zips you know a lot of projections say that the upside’s there it’s just the eye test keeps you know saying nope or it’s still very inconsistent it’s not the 2023 value. And that’s just always been my issue is this general manager is chasing a white whale trade package for something that has been long gone. And also, it’s just a huge risk now to bring him back compared to last season because last season the hope was he gets through April healthy and breaks in May, trade him by June. you know, just the the thinking was, well, he was just hurt a lot in 2024. That’s why he underperformed. But for the most part, he was healthy until, you know, he did have a small that small hamstring strain before he had the big hamstring strain, but for the most part in April and May, he was fine and he struggled mightily. So, if he has that same type of issue, you know, then the trade value continues to decline because I don’t think any team is going to be like, I got to jump the market to get Luis Robert Jr. again, where the hope was last year, yes, you wanted to jump the market if he did return to 2023 form. Now, you’re going to have to hold out hope that he gets through April healthy because, you know, the cold weather always impacts him. hits well like we saw those last three weeks before he went on the injured list in but none of that he’s got to do it through May June and July because like I said I just don’t see a team jumping the market but if he has another sluggish season or again if he has another major injury you might have to seriously considering him paying that $2 million buyout and then that trade asset is lost for nothing. That is why I keep suggesting it might be just better to settle for pennies on the dollar rather than get nothing at all. So, if you do get like again a Mark Ventos offer, take it. That’s all I’m saying. And it sounds like a majority here agrees that you know, take the deal if you get a chance to add some young major league talent that just needs a runway.
