REPORT: John Metchie & Adonai Mitchell Have Been “First In, Last Out” So Far With The New York Jets
All right, guys. What’s going on? Welcome in. So, during yesterday’s game, Charles Davis, who was on the call, mentioned something really, really cool. So, I guess in the week of leadup, Davis was talking to Jets quarterback coach Charles London. and London mentioned that both John Mechy and Adai Mitchell have been working extremely hard, of course, in practice, but they’re both first to arrive. They are the first guys in the building and they’re also the last to leave. Uh, and supposedly they’re trying their hardest to really just grab this opportunity that they have because quite frankly, John Mechy is not or has not been in a position, Houston, Philly, where he’s going to be receiving this much volume, right? Adonai Mitchell. You look at the situation in Indianapolis, right? Michael Pitman was the lockedin wide receiver one. You have Alec Pierce there is the lockedin wide receiver two. It’s a running team anyway with Jonathan Taylor. And then of course you throw on top of it Tyler Warren who is the what 14th overall pick in this past draft. Of course he’s going to be getting targets in the passing passing game. So, if you go from a situation like that, right, limited volume, limited uh targets, not really many opportunities to grow on the field on Sundays to a team like the Jets where it is just completely barren at the position, you know, especially with Garrett Wilson being hurt, you know, you look at just the numbers alone. You know, I I’m a big eye test guy, but I do think that that the stats are important when they do match the eye test. I mean, if we look at some of these receiving stats, it has been brutal. Absolutely brutal. Um, you know, just to quickly go through the list here, Josh Reynolds has 101 receiving yards on the season. Alan Lazard has 54 receiving yards on the season. Tyler Johnson 187. Aren Smith 47 yards. who just showed up a couple of weeks ago, who’s only had two starts, three appearances, but one was just kind of like a, you know, we we essentially just have to throw you out there for depth purposes. It’s not like he was like an actual, you know, viable target in that game for just showing up given the context. John Matchy has two touchdowns, 10 catches, 113 receiving yards, which again is not really anything to write home about, but again given the context, given the quarterback situation right now with the Jets and looking at the other wide receivers on the team, again, in two games, Miy has more production than Alan Lazard, Josh Reynolds, and Aryen Smith in two games alone. And to quickly dive in a little bit deeper here with Mchi, this is someone who I 100% want to see back with the Jets next season, right? obviously a restricted free agent, but I do foresee him being back. And I think a big part of that again is the impact so far. And look, it’s not like he has 500 receiving yards, 300 receiving yards, 200 receiving yards, or anything crazy. No one is saying the guy’s Jamar Chase. No one wants to jump the gun here, but just objectively speaking, looking at what Matchi has done so far with this Jets offense, he has impressed. And I think whenever you’re talking because look, Arian Smith had a whole training camp. Josh Reynolds had a whole training camp, preseason games, mini camp, OTAAS, he he got the system early. He’s been working with Tanner Estrand. He’s had an opportunity to form chemistry with Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor, Josh, you know, Tyler John, all these guys. And again, John and AD just showed up. So I I think it really comes down to three things, right? Whenever you have an instant impact type of player like this who can just show up in the middle of the season and he’s maybe not like a big household name or anything, but he shows up and he instantly starts making an impact. I think one of three things again could be taking place here. Number one, the player is either really, really, really good, really impressive, and he was just buried uh on the depth chart, or maybe he was an assistant fit in his last team. Whatever the case may be, that player is really, really good. So you’re now seeing with an with increased volume and increase in opportunities, this player is now shining. Number two, he is a great great system fit, right? Tanner Inkstrand is looking at mechi and saying, “Hey, I like your skill set. I like the pros, the strengths that you bring to the table. I’m going to put those on display. This kind of fits the archetype of what I want in this type of wide receiver.” And so we’re just seeing this, you know, smooth onboarding process where Mechi is just hitting the ground running. Boom. You know, again, Mechi didn’t John Mechy and and Mitchell did not have months to pick up the system, months to go work with Fields and Taylor to build chemistry and stuff. No, they are learning on the fly here. And the third possibility is that the room was just so horrible that any sort of like functioning average wide receiver is going to look great. Now, it’s probably a combination of a couple of those points. Um, again, you know, again, I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself here, but it’s it’s nice knowing that Darren Muji pulled off a couple of trades at the deadline with the focus of we are moving on from these players and we are getting tons of first round picks, tons of valuable draft assets, right? S Gardner was not traded for Mitchell. He was traded for the first round picks. Ady Mitchell was added in, right? Michael Carter, you look at that trade, you know, the the main point of that trade was to clear money. It was to move off of Michael Carter. We already have his upgrade. We don’t have to invest a free agent contract or a high draft pick or anything in finding the next slot quarterback. No, he’s already here in Brown Lee and he’s under control for at least the next three seasons on a cheap fourth round contract. So, let’s move Michael Carter. Let’s go from a seventh round pick to a sixth round pick. So, we’re benefiting in the draft. Granted, it’s just by a round and we’re talking late day three, but you know what? These picks matter at the end of the day for a bad team. And let’s take a swing on John Mechy, a former second round pick, someone who, you know, back in college was ultra ultra productive for Alabama and was projected to go in in the second round pick. And of course he’s dealt with a lot early on in his career um with you know him getting hurt, him having cancer, right? Leukemia, battling back from that. I mean just an just a crazy story, right? Crazy crazy story here. And then of course being on teams Houston Texans, Philadelphia Eagles where there’s not really many opportunities to be making that big of an impact. So again from Muji’s perspective, we’re like the the point of the trade is draft picks. We’re taking swings on these young players and through two games we’ve seen, in my opinion, enough flashes to get excited about. I mean, I hate to unfortunately make this uh comparison here, but look at a guy like Mazy Smith. You know, kind of same idea here. We’re moving on from Quinn. We add a first. Uh we add a second. Awesome. We’re clearing a bunch of money for free agency moving forward. And we’re taking a swing on Mazy Smith. Up to this point, Mazy Smith has not made that much of an impact positively. You can argue he’s actually hurt the team, right? He has not looked all that great. Of course, it it’s not uh closed the book on him. We’re done with him. There’s still six more games to end the season. Maybe he turns it around. Uh I’m not really expecting the world from Mazy Smith, but just to point out an example here, I can count multiple times where both Mitchell and Mchi have been impressive. I can’t say that with Mazi. I I can’t point to multiple moments where I’m like, “This is something that you can build around. I could see this in 2026. This is helping out this player. This is helping out this side of the ball.” Whatever it may be. I get that feeling with these wide receivers. I haven’t really gotten that with Mazy Smith. And and it’s no disrespect to Mazi. Again, it’s just pointing out an example of, hey, these, you know, swings where you’re taking a chance on a player there, there is a chance that it doesn’t work out. You know, despite the player being a former high pick and being dominant back at the college level, uh there’s a chance that it doesn’t go, you know, doesn’t work out. And and it doesn’t mean that Adai and and Mchi have arrived on the scene and they’re the end- all beall that, you know, we don’t need any more help at wide receiver. No, not at all. Um, but it’s it’s encouraging seeing flashes for throwins in the trade, right? The guys that are coming in on the back end of the trade, it’s like, whoa, clearing cap is nice. Adding draft picks is nice, but if we can actually get some help, some depth, some talent with these younger players that are working out, that is such a nice bonus. It is such a nice boost for a team that lacks talent and depth. Now, with AD Mitchell, he’s a little bit more interesting, right? because the numbers aren’t as impressive as Matchy so far. And granted, it’s only through two games, but he has three catches for 52 yards. For what it’s worth, that is more than Aren Smith, and it’s two less yards than Alan Lazard. Again, Lazard has 54 receiving yards on the season. But regardless, when you factor in the eye test with Mitchell, from an explosion standpoint, from a route running standpoint, as a vertical deep threat standpoint, size, right? Wingspan, catch radius, that whole thing. I mean, he looks like he’s just a sleeping giant. If he could get the catches figured out, right, because you’re assuming moving forward the team is going to add some more talent at free agency. You load in load in another draft class. you upgrade the quarterback position regardless of who it is. Um Garrett Wilson’s healthy a healthy nice boost to the offense. Maybe less pressure put on Mitchell. A full training camp in the fold. A full preseason in the fold. An offseason to work with Tanner Ingstrand. An offseason to build chemistry with said new quarterback. Whoever they that might be a you know a draft pick up at the top of the draft. a veteran trade acquisition projecting into the future. I think the the future’s looking pretty bright for for Adan I Mitchell. I really hope again he’s had drops. It hasn’t been perfect, but right now I’m not going to shred apart a 23-year-old for having a couple drops in his first game with his new team in a new situation. Um, you know, fact of the matter is if the if the Jets decided to draft Mitchell in that year that he came out, if Joe Douglas made Adonai Mitchell, you know, we had a second round pick that year or, you know, instead of trading up for Malachi Corley, we traded up for Mitchell instead. I would have been thrilled. You know, we don’t have to go back super far to look at pre-draft reports. Um, you know, how he’s projected into the NFL. Nobody nobody had the Colts as a fit for Mitchell. It kind of felt like, hey, he’s there BPA approach. Let’s take him. We don’t need him, but let’s take him. Maybe he could be our wide receiver three if he shows up to camp and just starts dominating. Um, again, is he a perfect wide receiver? No. Uh, will he maybe have more drops from here on out? Possibly. I’m not going to rule that out. But again, for me, the the name of the game from here on out with six games remaining, we play some good teams, we play some bad teams, we play some good defenses, we play some bad defenses. Let’s feed the young guys the football. Let’s keep on targeting AD. Let’s keep on giving Jon a ton of looks, a ton of passing targets, right? Let’s keep on throwing the ball to Mason Taylor. Let’s get Aren Smith more involved. Let’s phase out, in my opinion, let’s phase out some of these vets that uh will not be here next season. Stack as much volume as you possibly can for the remainder of this season so you have a clear picture on who to bring back for next year and or who to potentially look at as a solution. So macro perspective, I’m excited to see how it turns out. You know, again, the saucegarner trade was made for these first round picks. Two first round picks are it’s such a luxury, right? And then kind of the throwin bonus, Adonai Mitchell. Hey, let’s take a chance on a massive position of need with a high upside guy who hasn’t really had many opportunities to shine. Let’s see if he works out. Up to this point, he has been, in my opinion, an upgrade over what we currently had. And I think again that upside is on display in regards to John Mechy. Let’s clear a bunch of money with Michael Carter. Let’s slightly increase the draft position. Let’s take a chance on John Mechy, right? One-year kind of flyer, restricted free agent. Again, not much talent at wide receiver. Not much depth at wide receiver. Let’s add Mechi into the fold. See if he can provide a spark. See if he can, you know, show something here. I I mean, the guy’s what, 24, 25 years old. Let’s see if he’s got something kind of as a throwin of the deal. And it turns out in both of these moves, not only are the picks going to be awesome and going to benefit this team, not only is the cap relief going to benefit this team, not only do we already have replacements for both guys, but we’re getting these cool young players to kind of load into the roster to potentially grow and see what they have moving forward. So, I’ve been impressed with both guys. Um, I really, really have. And, um, like I said, six games remaining. We’ll see what happens. I’m hoping that the passing game continues to look like how it did yesterday where Ty I mean Tyron had over 200 passing yards. Granted, it’s not really got it’s not a massive bar to, you know, hurdle um based off of what we’ve seen in the in the drop back pass game this season. Lots of blame to go around. It’s not just on one coach or one player here. Um but let’s let’s keep this up, right? Let’s keep this up. I I don’t want to I don’t want to go through like a two three game stretch where Mitchell’s getting two looks in three weeks. I you know I don’t want to go through a month stretch where Mchi has four targets. Let’s let’s continue to feed these guys. Let’s continue to feed them. I don’t know if Reynolds is going to be here next season, right? I don’t I don’t think Lazard’s going to be here next year. You know, the Ruckers of the world. Let’s feed the young guys and just see what happens. Give them opportunities to shine. So anyway, let me know your thoughts down below in the comments section. Thank you guys so much for watching. I appreciate it and as always, go Jets.
Jets QB coach Charles London mentioned that both John Metchie and Adonai Mitchell have been first to the facility and the last ones to leave so far during their time with the NY Jets. They’re supposedly working really hard and trying to seize the opportunity..as always..Go Jets!

The New York Jets still need to draft a wide receiver in this upcoming draft. I like Denzel Boston he's a big guy. Good possession receiver willing blocker, red zone target with good hands that will complement Mitchell, metchi and Wilson.
I don't want to draft the quarterback. This year, when there are better quarterbacks, coming out next year.I hope ty simpson goes back to school and we finish somewhere around four or five or six in the draft order
Next summer I want to see an all-out battle for position between Metchie, Mitchell, Arian Smith, at least one highly-drafted WR, Brandon Smith, Skinner, and Pritchett — and you can throw in some UDFA WRs too. This team has neglected the modern passing game for the entire 21st century. The Jets haven't really been fun to watch as far as passing goes since the Wesley Walker/Al Toon/Mickey Shuler days.
Metchi looks like a Keeper 😊
Mazi might be a depth piece at a low cost
Thank you Ian for not switching up… and consistently using logic over emotions … we all know where this team at right now … they are building
Arian smith is a raw project and developing … he will show out next season
I see Briggs showing out !! Saunders will get his chance next week
Love these addition and with G5 back… Mason Taylor, a young o-Line B. Allen coming back- draft another WR in the draft day 2. We are building here. I see it
I’ve always thought Metchie could be one of the better slot WR’s in the league. Quick, good body control, good hands, intelligent, played for Alabama, has shown toughness. He fell behind in Houston and they got some good guys on the outside, Stroud prefers to throw to them and they didn’t have a role for Metchie. Then he gets to the eagles, they run the ball and no they can’t even keep their number 1 receiver happy.
Metchie doing well -6/7 catches but Mitchell 2/7 catches yesterday
both guys can definitely be serviceable for us. especially if we’re asking for wr3/wr4 production. it’s also important to understand that these guys haven’t hit their peak yet. i love it. good pick up for us
both AD and metchie have had to overcome something in college/nfl/real life. they’ve got chips on their shoulders. i like them both! ps: read AD mitchell’s article in the players tribune, some good stuff there!
I was talking to my brother a week ago and told him I don’t think the jets need to get a WR in the draft. I feel like we have guys right now we can count on, just need a QB and focus on the defense and backup O linemen.
We need to start Brady Cook from here on out!
I’d feel pretty good about a wr room next year of garret Wilson / 1st rd pick wr , Mitchell and metchie as our 4
I’m a diehard Jet fan that hates most Jet fans and Jet media….. except your channel. Love the fact that you lean on logic and being realistic. Keep doing your thing 🫡. And yes I believe that Jet fans and most of the clowns we have representing us in media are at least 25% of the reason why we can never build a competent organization.
We got Mitch and Metch
{Mix an Match}

A+ for Mougey so far. Brilliant moves. Everyone wants to dunk on Fields and Tyler Baron. Look Fields if he played like he did last year in Pitt we’d be 500 team with outside chance of playoffs. Whatever not a huge contract. And Baron was their highest rated edge when they drafted so, show me an edge taken after him that is balling out right now. The hope was he’d be able to outplay Clemons. Nitpicking. He’s doing outstanding after the Q and Sauce trades my excitement level is higher than when we first got Rodgers
Im extremely excited about these two WRs. Mougey has been doing well so far
Huh?!🤔 Yep .. trading for talent ahead of trading talent away. G5 getting shipped after the season.
Thank you 🎉🎉🎉
I agree with Ian on this. Mougey is already looking light years better than Douglas, he has had flops ( Cisco, Reynolds,), but also had some hits. Metcee has looked really good, thank God Glenn benched fields..tyrod isn't the be all and end all but he is throwing to these guys instead taking a sack, running the ball or hitting the check down.
Both these kids are learning a new system and apparently they are going at it hard, which with a losing team is easy to check out. Mitchell has a rep as being difficult, but he also was buried on those other teams. Glenn and Engstrand are smart, they are giving these kids opportunities and letting them have a chance. Yeah the field truthers live to blame Mitchell, who literally was starting his first game for the jets w those drops, but it also leaves out 2 of the 3 were poorly thrown.
This is why Tyrod is out there, it isn't about winning, it is giving the kids a chance to show their stuff, which they couldn't do with fields.
They seem like they are Glenn kind of guys and let's hope as they learn the scheme Engstrand uses them in a modern offense, not the generic calls that make it easier on them..we have 6 games to see what they can do, if Tyrod starts 4 and cooke 2 it will be all good.
Mitchell.only had 2 catches but he had 45 yards. With fields, that would have been like 10 yards.
Imagine with Garrett Wilson back, nobody can really hold these 3 guys
Let's hope Mougey has an eye for takent in the QB slot and we get a good QB, not a bum like Zach Wilson
Finish with Tyrod Taylor. Metchie is average. Hall needs to stay engaged. They need to WIN some games!
Metchie Mitchell Wilson and draft a Wr 1st round and another maybe 2nd and it will be a decent core
Metchie seems like a guy that could be a solid piece on anyone's team for a long time. AD Mitchell seems like a guy that could be a headache for his tenure here. Obviously hoping the opposite, but he's very erratic and unfocused still, so he needs a lot of work.
Please tell me John Metchie is under contract beyond this season. I have a good feeling about him as a very good #2 or #3 for seasons to come. Just work on those hands, John. I like his first name, too. 🙂 — John in NJ (I saw Joe throw at The Big Shea. Yea, THAT old. :-))
Great trade by Mouge. Metchie is a very easy guy to root for, he’s been through it all. Our wr core is actually very solid. All we need is one more solid guy, which is an easy fix with the ammo we have. Credit to Mouge and Glenn for adding some firepower before the offseason.
Come on man enough with the drops all receiver drop passes
We got our line and wide outs ! Build everywhere else
Definitely cheering for Metchie being a Leukemia survivor myself
These 2 are a great safety blanket in case Wilson asks for a trade. The Jets would still have to grab a wr maybe round 2. Also Jefferson looks like he’s on his way out 🔜
Metchie has been outstanding. Mitchell isn't horrible, we need to be patient with him, he's clearly busting his ass, give him time!! Great vid as always man.
Our offense will look way better with a healthy Garrett, new added additions, Taylor, Year 2 Arian Smith, also add a vet, lastly draft a QB and WR. Would be a boost for our offense.
I’ve been saying this the whole time. The receivers need someone to throw them the damn ball. These are professional athletes. They compete against other professional athletes. Can’t score if you don’t get the opportunity. It’s as simple as that 👍🏾
100% bring him back. Theoretically full season of this production would be 85 catches for 850 yards.. yes 100% give him a contract
Love ADs potential but love Metchie the person. Only been a few weeks but he seems like a great locker room guy and good receiver to boot.
High profile picks and deals are not enough to rebuild teams. Finding sleepers in unexpected places is also necessary to any rebuild. The Jets’ failure to find many sleepers has been remarkable in recent years. All of a sudden the Jets seem to be finding some sleepers under the new management. Add a few high profile picks that work out, and we might have something. There may indeed be a real process here.
If I’m not mistaken the graphic during the game Sunday said the past 3 weeks the Jets have a top 10 offense.
Signing Fields and relying on him was the stupidest idea ever …. We should of gave Tyrod the money and appointed him the starter – we would be a wild card team today
How's their blocking been? Are they showing any chops in that area?
I like the intro – fits your music well
Agreed. Let the young guys have their chance.
