THE HERD | Colin Cowherd SHOCKS, Jayden Daniels Will PLAY With Washington Commanders | NFL

On to Jaden Daniels, a forgotten man, a forgotten season. The Washington quarterback uh suffered that nasty elbow injury on November 2nd. Head coach Dan Quinn said this week Daniels is set to return to practice, but he has not yet been cleared for contact. Colin, just help me make sense of this. They’re 3 and8. They’re not going to the playoffs. And Jayen Daniels is out here saying, “If I’m back out there unhealthy, I’m ready to go. I want to be out there.” Like I I don’t know. I’m extra cautious with with stars in the NBA, in the NFL. I don’t want to see Jaden Danders on the field again this season. What’s the point? Well, he’s a pro athlete and he’s competitive and wants to play. I mean, that’s great. Yeah, that’s in any in any field. You’re healthy, you’re aggressive, you’re competitive. I want to be on the field. I think I have no problem him playing. I I I really don’t. I think young quarterbacks need more reps. It’s one thing again, if he was 37 years old, it was Matt Stafford or Aaron. That’s different. young guys. Get him out there. He’s still in the learning process of how to be a quarterback. Get him snaps. Yeah. He’s also learning how to play behind that rotten offensive line which is getting him killed. And so he’s running for his life and getting hurt. Colin, that you you get injured in December and it’s major. You’re going to miss part of next season. You can’t you can’t think about that. You know what you could do? You can have him on the headset listening on the sideline and you get a higher draft pick. How about this? Would you rather win six games, go six and 11 with Jaden Daniels playing down the stretch and pick 11th or win four games and draft, I don’t know, fifth with Jaden Daniels sitting. Think about the long term. I think either fifth or 11th you’re getting a starter. You’re probably getting an offensive tackle that starts at left or right for you because there’s three great old tackles and they’ll at least two of them will be available by the 11th pick. So, what they want they’re going to get regardless. Okay. Yeah. Okay. First off, I understand why Jaden Daniels is saying that if I’m healthy and ready to go, I want to be out there. Yeah, of course. What What do you want him to say? No, if I’m healthy, I just don’t really want to play. I’m just going to chill for a little bit. I mean, the whole thing is is how healthy is he actually? Okay, that really becomes the fundamental question is if you’re legitimately healthy and there’s really no concerns, then I would have no problem putting him back out there. But it would be really in terms of like I want to develop him more. I you know, it’s it’s Cliff Kingsbury, Jaden saying we’re let’s we’re not worried about anything else. We’re not trying to make sure that you know how to make the winning plays and I want you to hold on to the ball to to to make sure that you can push the ball down the field. No, it it’s like we’re just going to be working on a collection of specific things like it is just to get you reps. It is just to get you uh you know more and more and more comfortable out there. In fact, we want to adapt your style of play a little bit. You know, we we need to make sure that you are protected. We need to make sure that you understand that when the pressure is there, how to get rid of the ball in a way that now you are not taking these extra hits. Whatever it may be, what what whatever it may be strictly P you actually for these next few games, you are strictly a pocket passer. That’s it. Nothing else. You are I don’t want to see you go back and scramble where you go left and then you quickly cut back and loop around and go right like we keep seeing every everyone’s doing that these days right now. Everyone. It used to be just Lamar. Now it’s Josh Allen. Now it’s Jaylen Herz, it’s Kyler Murray, it’s Patrick Mahomes, like everyone’s doing it right now. Jaden Daniels, it’s like, “No, no, no. I don’t want you to do that ever. I don’t want you to do that right now.” No, I’m not saying ever, ever, but like not this season. No, no, none of that. Okay? None of that. In fact, this season, the rest of this season, I just want to work on hike one, two, throw, hike, one, two, throw, hike one. I don’t care what the stats look like. I don’t care what people are saying. I don’t care about any of that. like it would just be strictly like this is a sandbox that we’re working on. So, we are going to make sure that you continue to get better and better because he still does need to continue to get better and better because he is a young quarterback. And so, rather than just lose this whole year of development, we’re just going to work on it. We’re just going to use this as an extension to the practices. I wouldn’t put him in front of the Denver Broncos defense, that’s for sure. Definitely not doing that. And if you don’t think that that’s worth it from a coaching perspective, because you’re like, “Ah, that all sounds well and good in practice, but like we’ll just save that for practice. It doesn’t matter.” You know, the things that he needs to work on, the things that we want to develop him in, you know, he he he’s already he already understands how to play live football in the NFL. It’s really now just time on task. And a lot of the stuff that I want to work on, we can absolutely do in a more controlled environment in practice, et and again, that’s up to the coaches to decide. That’s why they’re the coaches. Um, and so, and I I’m not going to pretend like I have that exact answer, cuz I’m not going to tell you that I know exactly what Jaden Daniels uh needs to work on or how he needs to develop. I think if anything, it’s just seeing consistently the speed of uh of the NFL game and and just, you know, continuing to to get more and more comfortable so things continue to become second nature. But ideally, I’d like him to get that experience when I feel like he’s actually legitimately fully healthy. That’s for sure. Um, but if there’s any other things that you would want to kind of get him to work on, um, you know, then that’s fine. But I I yeah, I I don’t blame Jane Daniels for saying that at all. But I mean, it it is tough. He is such a valuable asset. He He’s so gifted and special that um he got out there, he got injured, he came back, he got injured, and now you’re talking about potentially like putting him back out there and like so that that that is a lot and that and you’re you’re it is also what people don’t realize I think I don’t know many uh even football players realize this or or coaching staffs healing is very intensive on your body. It’s very energy intensive. You actually when your when your body is healing, you actually need to eat more calories than you normally would. It’s very intensive. It is it is hard work for your body to repair itself. That’s you you you it’s it’s it’s energy intensive. It’s why when you’re in a hospital or something like that, they’re like, “You got to eat, you got to eat, we got to get food, you know, you got to eat.” Like it it matters. And so just just Jaylen’s body healing, even though he’s been having time away and whatnot, like it’s it’s energy intensive, it’s also mentally exhausting. It’s mentally exhausting and unless you’ve truly been through it, it’s hard to explain. Dealing with the pain, dealing with the fact that you can’t do what you normally can do, uh problems sleeping, like everything is disrupted. It’s mentally exhausting interacting with the surgeons, the physical therapists, MRI machines, X-ray, like all of it. You’re just like, it’s just, it’s exhausting. It really is. And that’s what Jane Daniels has been going through this whole season. And now you got to get thrown out there. And now you got to start like processing like, what does this defense want to do? How do they want to stop me? What is Cliff, you know, what is coach saying to me? What do I need to do? this that, you know, then it’s just like it it might not be the perfect environment to uh throw someone back out there. And since I’m not concerned about Jaden in a vacuum in in the sense of like, well, I need to see what this kid can do. No, I know Jaden Daniels is special. I know Jayen Daniels is awesome. Put a good enough team around him and as long as he’s healthy, he’s going to ball. He is going to be special. But I do think that he needs to change a little bit of how he plays. He needs to take less hits. He needs to get down. He will need to get rid of the ball faster. You know, like I th those are all things that I would that I that I told said that I wanted him to do before he ever took a single snap with the Washington Commanders. He was already drafted by them, but I said this is what I want to see. And that has proved to be the case. But then also if there is other things that he can do off the field from an injury prevention standpoint in terms of you know everyone was just like gain more muscle and it’s like yeah you know maybe but you know there’s various muscle imbalances style of play like there there there’s other things for him to do as well and some of it is just luck of the draw. Tom Brady wasn’t jacked and they’re always well because it was about his like flexibility and it’s like uh sure whatever you guys say. Um, you know, then you have other players who are jacked and they get hurt all the time. You have other players who have the the flexibility of a ballerina. They get hurt all the time, right? So, it just sometimes it just is what it is. Um, but yeah, I will definitely be more conservative uh because I have no questions that I need answered with regards to Jaden. So, I would just strictly look at this if I’m like the owner. I’m going to Cliff Kingsbury, Dan Quinn, etc. I’m just like, what are the things that Jane Daniels needs to work on? Like, what does Jada need to do to become the best quarterback that he can be? You know, g give me the the five the five things. Explain to me the steps and explain to me, does he need to be out on the field right now? Does that accelerate the process? Does that maximize the process? What are the pros and cons? Not in terms of health issues, but in terms of strictly the development of this quarterback right now. And then we start to weigh the pros and cons of saying, do we really need to put him out here for the rest of the season, or do we just shut him down, make sure that he is fully completely healthy, he’s still putting all the work in in practices, he’s still doing all the things that he needs to do, etc., etc., hitting the weight room, you know, whatever it is, working with the physical therapists, personal trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, all that good stuff. And then you just worry about, you know, next season. Doesn’t it doesn’t have to be any more intense, complicated, competitive alpha. doesn’t we we don’t we don’t have to make things more muddled up than they already are. We were already denied year two from Jaden Daniels. And when you’re looking around the league, when you’re looking around the other quarterbacks, there are still not many quarterbacks that I’m taking over Jane Daniels. There’s just not. Everyone’s all into a collection of I’m not even going to name names because I’m not trying to trigger any of these other fan bases right now, but there’s a lot of other names that people are very much like, “Oh, that’s right. That’s right. Blow blow. So and so is so much better. He’s gray. He’s this. And it’s like, he’s not Jane Daniels. He’s not Jane Daniels. And Jane Daniels will remind everyone of that in 2026. It’s a bummer, but he will. But those are just my thoughts. I’d absolutely love to hear yours. What do you guys all think about Jane Daniels and the Washington Commanders? Do you think he should go out there and play? Uh, do you think they should shut him down? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below. 1. As a Broncos fan I’ve been looking forward to this game all year, seeing Bo and Jayden go head to head. But you’d have to be a fool to rush Jayden back against this defense. I don’t want to see him get hurt again. It’ll have to wait for another time.

  2. If he is healthy, let him play in practice and if it looks ok, start him in a game. But you can't tell him don't scramble to make a play. It won't work.
