The Dallas Cowboys Might’ve Found a GEM With This Rookie CB (Shavon Revel All-22)

Savone Rell played 57 snaps against the Kansas City Chiefs yesterday. His first real NFL start, real reps against a Hall of Fame quarterback, two good receivers, and Rasheed Rice and Xavier Worthy. And I thought he held up extremely well. The rookie third rounder coming off an ACL injury, playing in a huge game on Thanksgiving in prime time against that quarterback, delivered a really good performance, and I wanted to look at that in today’s All22 video. I wanted to answer some questions we had coming into the year and some questions we have moving into the future. So, let’s not waste any more time and get into it. The first play we’re going to look at, Revel is lined up outside on Travis Kelce. They’re going to motion Rasheed Rice across the formation and just throw him a little wide receiver screen. Kelsey’s going to be responsible for blocking Revel and he comes up. Donovan Wilson does a good job of shooting this gap, not letting those tackles get out and make a block, but he’s going to redirect. Rice, gets off that Kelsey block, gets in there, and helps Solomon Thomas make the play. Just one I wanted to throw in there because Dallas really needs some physical corners on the outside, guys that can come up and tackle on wide receiver screens and run plays. So, a good play by him and Donovan Wilson. And Dallas in this game ran a lot of man coverage. And I think this is where Rebel really thrives as a corner for this rep. He still makes a good play, but I want to talk about why he’s such a fun prospect when we think about the Cowboys future and and this year as well. Look at the physical profile. Look at the size. Look at the arm length. How small he makes Rashi Rice look. Rice is not a a small guy, but Rebel is such a big physically imposing corner. He can blanket wide receivers. And if you’re a quarterback, this is just not really the matchup you want. I don’t think you’re eager to throw it to that side of the field because of how big and how much ground and how small the window is going to be throwing to Rebel side. And at first, Mahomes doesn’t look that way, but because of Sam Williams, shout out to him. He had a really good game yesterday. Because of the pressure, Mahomes is flushed out, forced to make a throw. In this one, he’s not even really throwing to his side. That’s more so a keep the ball out of danger throw than than giving Rice any sort sort of chance. Rebel does a good job of carrying him downfield, staying on staying on his hip, and then Mahomes is forced to get rid of the ball. Now, the big question is coming off an ACL injury, can he still run? Can you keep up with NFL wide receivers? And I think this is a great play to show you that he can. And we’re going to look at some other ones as well. The matchup here is Xavier Worthy, the fastest man in NFL combine history. Rebel is on the outside and what they’re going to do is they’re going to run a little out and up with Worthy. Rebel does a good job of not biting on that out, staying right in his hip pocket and carrying him all the way down the field. And if he’s running with a guy that broke the 40 yard dash record, 30, 40 yards upfield, I would say that he’s definitely got the speed and that knee is in really good shape at this point in the season. It’s only going to continue to get healthier as he plays, as he trusts it more. But to see him carrying that speed up the field is super super impressive. another example where he’s just able to to run with the receiver. They’re going to have Worthy run some sort of drag over the top of the end zone and it really just turns into a foot race. Worthy does a good job with the release getting a little bit of space at the top of the route. But watch Reb’s recovery speed. He’s able to get right there on Worthy and with his length, he is definitely in a position to make a play because of the pressure. Mahomes is forced outside the pocket. The ball didn’t go to Worthy, but still a really nice rep. And they had Rebel matched up on Worthy for a lot of this game. On this one, they’re really just trying to isolate the the linebacker or Logan Wilson here. Get the ball to Kareem Hunt. Maybe if the play breaks down, they’re going to try and and get it to someone else. But Rebels lined up at the top of the screen. This guy’s just going to run a drag route. They’re trying to get everybody going to this side of the field and then throw it back to Kareem Hunt. But watch him be able to carry the wide receiver across the field field. Stay stay in lock with him the entire way. And if it wasn’t that play design, if it was just a drag route, it’s good to see him sticking with it and still in a position to make a play. What I really really like is his his strength as a manto-man corner. Because of the long arms, because of the recovery speed and the closing speed, those throwing windows for quarterbacks down in the red zone, it’s just not going to be easy against him. Matched up one-on-one with Rasheed Rice on the outside. This is late and a very big part of the game. Rice is just going to run a slant route right here. Mahomes is looking that way the entire time. Lined up one-on-one on the outside against the rookie corner. They’re going to go that way. Rice has a good release. Rebel does a good job of keeping his shoulder square, getting back to the backside hip of Rice. And I’m not sure if Mahomes is inaccurate on this throw or because the coverage is so tight that it’s one of those things to where, okay, I might have to sail this one high. If he doesn’t catch it, oh well. But just trying not to fit it in there because of the position that Rebel has on Rice right here. He just kind of sails it out of the back of the end zone. A really big play, a really good play against a good receiver in Rice. I love what he can do as a man-to-man one-on-one corner this time working against Xavier Worthy. He does a good job of being physical at the top of the route. That’s actually Rasheed Rice. I keep getting them confused. This ball ended up going to Kelsey, but to see him staying with Rice, not falling for any of the head fakes or the little the little inside move, outside move, and then back across, he’s still there. I still think there’s some things that can be cleaned up, especially in just like reading and reacting to throws underneath or coming up and making a tackle. It’s not perfect. He’s a third round corner coming off an ACL injury. Played one legitimate year at ECU. So, it’s going to take some time to get him acclimated. But when you look at the physical tools and then what he did against a really good offense and I’m sure an offense that watched his tape to see if there was anything that they could figure out, I thought he was excellent in this game and I’m really really excited for what it means for the future because Dallas needs corners. I know they have Trayvon Diggs, but he likely won’t be here next year. They have Don Bland under contract. They still have Kalin Carson under contract. If they could get into the NFL draft without desperately needing a corner and just being able to go BPA hopefully on the defensive side of the ball, that would put them in the best position to be successful. If they can rely on Revel in 2026, 2027 with Bland playing inside or outside depending on other guys on the team. It would just it would be another step forward for this defense putting it all together in the next coming year. So, thank you guys so much for watching.
