Washington Wizards x Box Out Cancer Night Recap

Let’s embark in a tradition that dates back to 1996. Bell ringing. It’s a way to mark the end of cancer treatment. You’ll you’ll do that and then you’ll step to a side. I’m overwhelmed with how I’ve been treated here tonight at the Wizards game. Uh it’s uh emotionally telling. Frankly, it’s it’s been a real trip. And now, Thomas, put a close on this chapter in your life and ring that bell. Ringing that bell and getting on the court was like a dream. Never thought I’d be able to do that. It was very emotional. I’ll remember this forever. Danita, it’s your turn to close this chapter in your life. Breathe. It felt awesome, overwhelming, and I was happy to share my story with the world. How important is the fight against cancer to you? You know, to me, there’s nothing more important. I think all of us have some connection to cancer, either through ourselves or someone we know, someone we love. And you know, one thing that I want everyone to remember is that no one deserves to have cancer. No one does anything to get cancer. there are risk factors, but we’re being exposed to things all the time individually and and I think that now cancer is very treatable here in DC. Uh and and we at Midstar Health are really proud and privileged to take care of our patients. You know, my relationship with with my patients like Tom is mostly in the hospital in our infusion unit, our clinics, but to see him out here at the Wizards game here tonight really sort of enjoying the day, you know, brings me a lot of joy, a lot of warmth and and really gets me ready to go back to work tomorrow. She’s not a patient anymore. She’s a human being who can move forward and close this chapter in her life. I’m very very happy that this is a new beginning for her. It was really cool seeing my doctor outside the hospital. I actually got to know her. We’re actually the same age and um have children and just it’s really nice to finally ask her questions. This is something that I defeated and I am so overwhelmed that this is my fourth year of being cancer free and many more to come.

As Cancer Awareness Month concludes, we’re looking back on our Box Out Cancer Night, in partnership with MedStar Health, and the three survivors whose journeys we honored 🎗️
