Dallas Stars Mikko Rantanen SUSPENSION Debate: Was NHL’s Punishment TOO LIGHT?
One of the NHL’s biggest stories, if not the biggest right now, involves Dallas Stars forward, Mo Rantin. The Stars dynamic forward received a one-ame suspension by the NHL’s Department of Player safety. But here’s the twist. It’s an automatic suspension. So, was the punishment fair? Did he deserve more? And why even I will still defend him? Your Locked On Stars, your daily podcast on the Dallas Stars, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. Howdy, Stars fans. I’m Joey Ericen, former producer 105 through the Fan. Please be sure to subscribe. We are free available wherever you get your podcast and on YouTube. And as always, thank you so much for making us a part of your day and making us your first listen. Welcome to a Tuesday edition of Locked On Stars, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, now the number one sports podcast network. The hottest story in the NHL involving one of the NHL’s most controversial players right now, Mo Rantin, who received a oneame suspension for his hit on Coronado of the Flames a couple of nights ago. Let’s dive into all of Mo Rantin’s crazy week with the Dallas Stars and why I still will defend him to some degree. We’re going to dive into all of that on this Tuesday edition. Do want to thank you for joining us each and every single day. I apologize for not having an episode out tomorrow. I was on a bus for like 12 hours. Essentially had to go right to the airport to travel back home for Thanksgiving. So, I had to take the option on a Monday, but we’re here and ready to rock and roll the rest of the week. Let’s get into this Mo Rantin saga recently. It was quite the week for him. He was fined for an embellishment penalty earlier in the season uh against Vancouver, but the controversial play was his hit on Coronado of the Flames over the weekend. And I want to get into that first. I do not condone the hit that Miko Rantin laid on the Flames Ford. I I did not like it at all. Watching it at full speed was really really cringing and I I did not like that he went right through the numbers of Coronado. I think I’ve been fairly consistent on that here on the podcast. I I hate to see guys go right through the numbers of opposing players and I know Coronado pulled up, but Ranson was trying to drive him into next week and and that was uh a dirty hit. I I I think that’s safe to say that can be described as a dangerous hit number one a and dirty to go right through the players back. I know he pulled up, but but Ransin was was trying to drive him into next week. Fortunately, Coronado was okay and was able to return to the game and not face uh any lingering injuries. Of course, we found out that Alexander Romanov, who Ranson uh collided with a couple nights prior, is now out for five to six months with a shoulder surgery. I I I still deem that as more as an unfortunate collision than ranting and trying to steamroll Ramanov. I think those two plays should be classified totally different. And I know there’s plenty of people that are still up in arms uh about the Islanders one. This this Flames one I think is is completely different. Now, uh I think what really irritated some people, so this was a statement from the NHL department of player safety. Miko Ranton has been automatically suspended for one game under rule 23.6 physical infractions category in regular season league games. Any player who incurs a total of two game misconduct penalties in the physical infractions category before playing in 41 consecutive regular season games without such penalty shall be suspended automatically for the next league game of his team. So it was an automatic suspension. That’s why Mo’s not going to to play tonight uh against the Oilers. And he wasn’t given more. Frankly, I think he deserves more. I I probably would have upped it to to three. I I think three games would have been fair for that hit against Coronado. I I think it also says uh the the league and and I I think you can give credit to the stripes um against New York. He received a misconduct for for for that collision with Armana. whether it was accidental or intentional, they they still gave him a misconduct. Again, I think that was more unfortunate than it it was uh this this hit against uh the Flames Ford uh Coronado. Um and honestly, I I’m shocked he wasn’t suspended a bit more. I think part of it is Coronado came back. If he did not come back, I think the suspension would have been upped. Uh I I think in in hindsight that probably helped Ranton in to only receive uh the oneame uh suspension from the department uh of NHL’s player safety. But that hit just can’t happen, right? I think we’d all be up in arms if that happened to a Stars player. Um just like we were up in arms about Mark Stone against uh against Miro Hastinan LA last season. Um, at first I was completely disgusted by it, but as we got further away from the situation, I even classified it. It was more unfortunate than than anything. Uh, it’s hard to know the intent of Stone when he dove at um at at Miro’s leg. Of course, I hated it. Like, no one wants to see their their best defenseman out for like the entire year. uh fortunately he was able to return uh in the postseason. But this this is where I may go off the rails and and some of you may not like this, but that that’s whatever. I I I truly feel this and uh I’m going to to uh try to explain this uh in the best possible way. I do not mind Mo Rantin playing on the edge. If he’s going to be categorized as a dirty player, which you’ve seen a lot, I’m okay with that. Again, not defending the hit against Flames forward Coronaut. Not defending that at all, but I’m okay with him playing on the edge. I think the stars need to play on the edge. Hockey is a physical violent game. There are going to be bad hits. There’s going to be really bad collisions. There’s going to be stuff after the whistle. There’s going to be some cheap shots here and there. That’s just the nature o of the game. And I say this full well knowing this can happen to stars players as well. I saw nobody up in arms about Darnell Nurse injuring Rope Hints in the playoffs. I saw nobody up in arms about Buchard taking a whack at Hints and and and and going right after the uh the injury. Nobody was up in arms during that during the postseason. And I think as Stars fans, we also have to to just sit back uh and realize this is a really tough game and there’s going to be people that are are going to go after Ranton, which we’ve seen, of course, but right now Ranton is just a controversial player. If this happened to anybody else right now, I I really don’t think anybody I I don’t think we would be having to talk about this um as much. we would hear on locked on stars because it it involves the Dallas Stars, but I don’t think there’d be this whole national conversation revolving Ranton because well, he’s having a heck of a start to the season. He leads the league in penalty minutes. Um he he’s a controversial player after what happened last year. It’s been a whole thing. So, it’s just this whole narrative around him has started to change since last year. So, this is growing a lot of legs. Hockey is a violent game. There are going to be bad hits. there are going to be bad collisions and unfortunate things just like what happened to me hasten last season and nobody was up in arms about anything that happened in the postseason for for Dallas and hence uh you know four or five months ago but now that it’s Mo it’s it’s it’s really invigorated this fire in a lot of people I think um and I just I will defend Mo for playing on an edge I do not defend the dirty play I I did not like the hit I I will state that again but I defend him for playing with a bit of intensity. You have to do that in the NHL. You have to do that if you want to win Stanley Cups. As much as people cry and moan about the the Panthers for, you know, playing on the like they play a little dirty here and there, like that’s just nature of the game and they win and nobody cares. The Stars need some of that. You you hear former players every season, what does this team need? What does that team need to get over the hump? Well, they need a little grit. They need a little grittiness, some physicality. It’s the same conversation. And Mo’s bringing that. And he’s the best player on the Stars, maybe outside of Jason Robertson right now, who we need to get to because he’s playing some of the best hockey ever. That’s actually not just a a 100% factual statement with what we’re seeing from Jason Robertson. But he’s also a heck of a player, and I think that’s good for the Stars to have somebody that’s like emotionally leading them. And yeah, I think Mo plays a little dumb sometimes. I I do when he when he talks uh to the media and they ask him about things. I just I’m okay with that. I like him playing on the edge. Stars need more of that. That wins that wins in the postseason. That’s physicality. And yeah, you’re going to hear a lot of flak. You’re going to hear a lot of stuff about Mo because he’s just a controversial player right now. But I I I am okay with them being labeled as a dirty player. Uh, I I think I think a lot of Stars fans would maybe agree with me on that, but I I I like that he’s trying to to just bring that edge like you can’t cross the line and I thought he crossed the line the other night. You have to be care and sometimes you’re going to go over the line. Um, I’m not advocating for for for guys to go injure other players. It’s not what I’m advocating for, but it’s hockey. Um, and and I think sometimes hockey fans, we want it to be all sunshine and rainbows. nobody gets hurt. It’s just it’s just not how it is. Like this is a game with a lot of alphas. Um and and and they’re trying to hurt other people. I like I I think that’s safe to say like when you get in combat and you’re in the thick of things like you’re trying to to to hurt people to some degree. Uh, I’m not saying you’re you’re trying to end careers and whatnot, but you get to the postseason series, I think we’d be all silly to sit here and be naive thinking like you guys aren’t trying to hurt each other and and and trying to get whatever edge they can. Um, and and I’m okay with that. I’ll def and full well knowing it can happen to the start. It happened to the stars, you know, a couple couple months ago in the postseason about hints. Um, and yeah, I was upset by it, but it’s just it’s just how it is. Um, and you have to be able to stick up for yourself and Ranton I think is doing that. He’s a big mofo and I think he’s gonna be fine. So that’s that’s uh that’s my thoughts on the whole situation. Uh I wanted to to kind of throw that out there. Some people may not like it. Oh well. Uh this this is this is my my 100% opinion um on the matter. Uh let’s get to some more positive stuff. Jason Robertson, is he playing the best hockey ever? I think he is. We’ll do that in just a moment. Today’s episode of Locked on Stars is brought to you by our friends at FanDuel. Always appreciative of the love and support. Happy Thanksgiving as well to all you Stars fans out there. Hope you have some great plans with friends and families here uh over the the next couple days and and get some uh good food. I will have an episode out on uh on Thanksgiving uh mainly because the Stars play Wednesday night. So, I’ll have something to put out. Um I’ll be honest, if the Stars weren’t playing, I don’t know if I I get one, but you’re going to have a little turkey special, little Thanksgiving special here um on Locked on Stars. So, I I don’t think we’ll miss a beat the rest of the week. And to be fair, I do owe you guys after uh missing uh uh missing an upload yesterday. Okay, Jason Robertson. Uh well, he scored another goal the other night against Calgary. By the way, uh just thoughts on the Calgary quick little synopsis. That’s a really good point. Stars probably should have picked up two when they had a five on three late in the game, but that’s that’s a good point after after trailing. Uh and the Stars just continue to find ways to to pull themselves out of holes. But is is Jason Robertson playing his best hockey right now? I I I tend to think he is. I think this is the best version of Jason Robertson I have have ever seen. I I don’t know statistically if you look at the point production over the last whatever so games, what he has nine goals or like 10 goals his last six games now. I I don’t know if I if if that would back up he’s playing his best in terms of point production. But just the overall game, it has to be the best I’ve ever seen him. He He seems to to skate better right now than he maybe has in the years past. He just seems to be moving a lot better. He seems more mo mobile. He’s slippery as always. U the shot he scored against Calgary the other night, just that slick whip wrist. It’s not the hardest in the world, but it just it finds a way. He he finds a way to score. Two weeks ago, Robo was on three goals. He’s up to 13 a couple weeks later. And now he leads the Stars with 13 goals. He’s tied with Mo with 28 points. And and is just a huge menace to opposing net minders. You look at his his hockey stat card, plus 6.0 rating offensively, plus 1.2 defensive rating. his defensive game has really rounded out. I think he’s really, really good in his defensive zone and I think he works extremely hard. It’s something he probably doesn’t get enough credit for maybe nationally because of his offensive numbers. They really pop, but he just works hard. There’s a big effort. Um, and I I think that matters a lot. He he tries extremely hard in in his own zone defensively. I think he steals a lot of pucks. He he he gets takeaways and he he’s one of the better forwards for for Dallas in terms of just getting pucks out of the defensive zone when Dallas is maybe hemmed in or struggling. He he is so good at at helping, you know, retain possession number one, get possession back, um, and just and get pucks out, which I I I think is something that, you know, doesn’t get shown a lot. It’s not something that’s going to pop up on the stat sheet. Um, but is is really good at. And I think if you look at the, you know, the under the hood numbers, he grades out really strong there. Um, but I I think this is just the best we we’ve seen of him. His shooting percentage is now up to 13.5%. It was at 5% for the first uh 14 games of the season. He’s up to 13. He um he he’s he’s throwing a lot of pucks on net. 96 shots. That leads the Stars. The next closest is Johnston at uh at 50 or 62. 103 163, pardon me, shot attempts. The next closest is Johnston at 115. 163 total shot attempts. Uh that that is some mind-boggling numbers. I’m I’m actually almost surprised that it’s not one of the the league’s highest. You know, McDavid has 134 total shot attempts. So, I would imagine uh Robo is up there in some of the league leaders. Uh you know, he’s playing 20 minutes a night. I think it it was big. He’s he’s healthy coming into this year. He started the year not extremely healthy last season and then of course he ended the season uh getting banged up and um he he has just been u incredible for Dallas and as I stated earlier as amigo ran the best player Dallas well like Robo’s Robo’s there like Robo’s making this a big conversation um and it it is it is great to watch Robertson’s a plus nine plus nine Miko’s a minus for he is he is proving that he is every bit worth of whatever his contract is is going to be either earlier this season. Hopefully the Stars are able to work something out or later on if the Stars give it to him or Mo Ranson. And that’s that’s going to be the real fascinating part about all this right now from Robo this production. It it’s only helping him only helping him get paid. Mo’s getting paid 12. If Dallas can get him 11 and a half somewhere around there long term, I would be shooting off fireworks inside of this apartment right now. Uh some people wouldn’t like that, but that’s how exciting it would be if Dallas was able to to do that. So, we’ll we’ll we’ll see uh what what the contract situation ends up being. But he he’s he’s he’s winning himself a lot of money right now. He’s at the slot machine and he’s getting triple sevens um after every game it feels like. uh as as he pots another maybe goes up a couple hundred grand um a year with what he um what he’s been able to do. But I I think it is this is the best version we’ve seen of Robo. Just a real complete player power play. Know he doesn’t get a lot of work on the PK if if at all. Uh but just his game defensively all three zones. He’s making plays, making smart plays. They’ve kind of used him with a lot of different combinations. We saw him with Johnston ranting in a lot before Rope came back. Now they’re back together. Ro’s having a nice start to his season. He’s a point per game. Robo’s lighting it up. Just a lot of strong strong strong work from from Robo. Um and he deserves a lot of love. Uh and I I stated this coming into the year is we are going to be super spoiled here if Robo and Ransin are firing all all cylinders together. and and we’ve seen that uh here over the last couple weeks. It’s a lot of fun. They are fireworks together. Uh either together or separate u just just watching the stars of two elite scorers um is is really really exciting. Um and they’re they’re they’re kicking butt right now and it’s uh it’s great to see. So wanted to to share some love from Robo who scored another goal. Um he scored in the shootout again, too. Just automatic uh little sifter through the uh the five hole. He continues to be an absolute weapon in the skills competition. All righty, let’s preview the Oilers tonight. Stars without Mo Rantin. What is it going to look like? Can they potentially steal a point in game one of this backtoback to wrap up their four-game road trip? We’ll discuss in just a moment. Stars defeated the Oil earlier this month 4 to3 in a shootout 8:00 puck drop in Edmonton who has been a bit I I would I guess describe it as as mediocre to sort of begin the year. I think a lot of Oilers fans would describe it the same way. Um, it’s been up and down. It hasn’t been pretty. Uh, they’re 109 and five. They did just pick up a a great win over Florida. They’re 44 and two over their their last 10. It it’s been a bit of a slo for for them. Um, but if I put my money on any team to have the best second half or to have a breakout from Thanksgiving on, it would of course be the Oilers, who we know are dangerous. uh Dry Cidle, the Stars have to find a way to to manage him to to limit him. Uh he he was all over the sheet in Dallas in the first matchup. Um he is the real danger of course out outside of of 97. They’re two of the top five players um in the game. Uh it’s it’s always always a chore uh when you have to to take on uh MC McDavid and company. But, you know, they’ve been getting some real good production out of their their bottom six. You know, Jack Rosvik, who I’ve always looked at for the Stars to go out and get, he signed really cheap. Um, just before the year with Edmonton, he’s got 17 points in 22 games. He he’s been excellent. Um, defensively, they’re struggling right now. Um, and goalending wise, too. They they are not getting uh great goalending from Steuart Skinner or Pickard, but if we know anything here as Stars fans, Steuart Skinner will find a way to be absolute buzzsaw um against Dallas. Um it’s it it hasn’t been pretty um in the net. Uh 3.54 goals against for Edmonton. That’s 28th, but they’re scoring over three goals, so they can outscore you. Uh their power play is extremely good. Uh penalty kills about middle of the pack. So uh it’s an Edmonton team that is looking for a spark and they’re at home tonight. Uh and Dallas is going to have to be ready. They’re without Mo. Hopefully Robo can have a big one tonight. Um and and the Stars can can find a way to to get two points. You would have loved two points in Calgary. After the way it started, the one point was fine. You get two points, the road trip is great. and whatever happens in Seattle tomorrow night um is is what happens. Uh there are some uh numbers, some key numbers I’d want to throw out there uh to you. Uh the Stars have the best road record in the NHL since 2022. This comes from uh NHL.com. Uh Mike Star staff put this together. Uh Stars sit 838 and 16. Also leads the league in road scoring at 3.40 4-0 um and in road goals against at 2.85 uh 2.87, excuse me. They are second this season in points percentage at 71 and three. So, they’ve been uh they’ve been tough to play um on the on the road. Uh that’s that’s actually really um really fascinating. Best road team since 2022. Well, a couple years ago, uh they had the best road record in franchise history. So, they’ve been pretty consistent. Um, and I think Dallas’s game has translated really well on the road th this season. Everything that Glenn Goolson has been preaching with the physicality and and just the systems trying to, I think, bring the identity back of being more stout defensively um is is helping. And when they get goalending that’s average or above average, you’re you’re going to win a lot of games. You’re going to pick up a lot of points. to Smith was remarkable the other uh night um against uh against Calgary. Uh big time for uh big time game for for Otter tonight um who I believe is is going to start and then Smith will get tomorrow against uh Seattle. Uh the Flames, pardon me, the Oilers, um the faceoff dot if you’re interested in that. Stars are uh right near uh right near Edmonton. 53% for both sides uh actually. Uh and Dallas I feel like struggled against Calgary the other night. They did not win a ton of faceoffs especially on their their power play opportunities. Um I feel like the last couple of games uh they need to be a bit stronger there um and start to to win some of those draws. Uh and and maybe Duchain comes back here soon. Uh Ben being back has has certainly helped. Uh stars are, you know, getting healthy, trending in the right direction, still playing still playing good hockey. Uh but they can’t trail tonight. I think that’s going to be big. They can’t get down to to Edmonton. Uh it can get out of a it can get it can get out of hand in a hurry. Um if the Oil get up a couple, it feels like although maybe I shouldn’t say that, the Stars sometimes play their best hockey uh when they’re they’re they’re down too. But, uh, going to be a fun one tonight. Rogers place 8:00 putt drop. We’ll be back tomorrow to break it all down. Um, let’s do a little maybe prediction. Who’s going to have a big game? Let’s go. Rope. Why not? A little revenge for for Rope. Hence has a big game tonight. Maybe a pair maybe a pair of goals uh for for H. He’s going to be flying around uh doing good things for for Dallas uh tonight. So, that’s going to be one of my little predictions. Can’t wait for for the uh Stars new third jersey to drop here. Uh the the Stars are teasing everybody. This creative team is teasing us. Uh new third jersey is supposed to to drop. I believe Dallas is supposed to wear them on Friday uh when the Stars return home. Uh because it’s like a retro night. So, can’t wait for that. There are some really really encouraging pictures and stuff. I think it’s going to be a little bit of that old flare. So, that’s going to be really really fun. And uh uh I’m sure Stars fans are going to be emptying their bank accounts um for that one. I believe Team USA’s jersey is supposed to be revealed too here over the next couple days. So plenty of action. Although I I’m going to get me a Swami jersey. Uh I need a Sumi jersey if anything um for for our fans. Uh but a real real exciting time here over uh over the Thanksgiving break. All righty, Stars fans. That’s going to do it for this Tuesday edition of Locked on Stars. Thanks for joining us. Jam-packed show. Going to be a fun one tomorrow. breaking it down. Of course, we got Seattle as well, so we’ll have that for the end of the week. A lot of hockey to chew on. Only game of the night, too. This is the lone hockey game in the NHL for whatever reason. It’s Stars Oilers. So, all eyes um on these two teams tonight. We’ll catch you tomorrow, Stars fans. Thank you for making the lockdown podcast number one sports podcast network. We’ll see you tomorrow. So long, Stars fans.

Mikko can’t help the guy turned himself towards the boards before he got hit. Guys do that now days because they know it will be a penalty. Weak hit, it just looked bad because the guy put himself in bad position in my opinion.
Not mikkos fault the guy he hit is the same size as a large child. He’s called moose for a reason. Not his fault. Hockey is a contact sport. If you can’t understand that? You shouldn’t play.
We all want an aggressive big forward and now you have one. Maybe he will bring some toughness to this team. I think he sees how weak they are. His first game last year with Edmonton the oilers beat the crap out of him and none of his teammates stood up for him. He knows if they are going to win a cup they have to be tougher. Look what happened to hintz last year against the oilers and hintz. Have to let the other team know it’s coming for them if they want to play like that.
He was slashed in the wrist in the first period and got no call and then he got a slashing penalty and got pissed off and deduced to handle it
Benn is prepping the next captain. Thats all : )
Oy they just released the new sweaters. They are way better than what we had but still a miss compared to the 99 dark green with gold. If it had some gold trim it wpiod look better and needs the green to be darker
Avs fan here who loves Mikko, miss my boy. He's not a dirty player at all. He's physical and sometimes shit happens, he doesn't try and hurt people.
I've seen so much worse without even a call let alone suspensions.
Keep up the great work Mr Reindeer soup king
I want the whole league to play like they have the name Tkachuk on the back of their jersey. Look, NFL looks like 90's era Arena football now. NHL is starting to look like Olympic hockey. I like Olympic hockey for two weeks every 4 years. I watched the highlights from the most recent Montreal Toronto game and it was like I had stepped into a time warp and suddenly real hockey was back. We need that in our sport.
Mikkos hits were a mix of things. The Romanov was caused by their defensemen leaning into him and tripping him up a bit and he ended up pushing him into the boards. Mikko literally threw his skates in front to avoid slamming him into the boards after. If he wanted to take him out, why did he do that and risk hurting his legs instead of slamming against him on the wall…
The Coronato hit was more boarding in my book, but I also put blame on Coronato. He stopped going full speed with Mikko right there on him (whether he knew he was there or not) and turned to face the boards and Mikko went for a hit that went bad because he stopped and spun to face the boards.
Look, both situation suck (especially Romanov being out for 5 months) but I don’t see this as a Mikko being a dirty player. He’s been in the league for about 13 years and never had anything like this before. If he was dirty, we would have already seen it. League agrees that’s why they did only the automatic 1 game ban.
At this point he’s gonna have to chill a bit though and be more careful. But if we are gonna play this game and be more sensitive to situations like that, then Taylor Hall should have gotten a major for that hit in Hintz and Mark Stine should have been suspended for that hit on Miro last year.
What comes around goes around. Hope Stars fans don't start crying when your boy gets crushed.
1 game is perfect. The hit on coronato wasn't great, the hit on Romanov wasn't intentional and he was being hooked. Perfect outcome, but the idiots in Denver need to look in the mirror if they have an opinion on this. He was playing this way for years in Colorado, not a word. Now it's an issue? They're really a jealous ex at this point lol
Joey, I disagree with your assessment of Miko's hit on Coronado but understand that when you want more edge to your game you will cross the line. I absolutely love it.
The new alternate jerseys look pretty sick
1 game suffices.
You cannot in the same breath say "I know he put himself in that situation" and then "Mikko went right through his numbers". I completely disagree with your assessment and this is absolutely nothing like the Stone incident. Stone leaped into Miro's legs when he got tripped by sprawling out. Coronado stopped dead and turned toward the boards despite being about 5 inches shorter than the truck coming in right behind him. And it's also stupid to say the suspension was warranted when you also believe the Romonov incident wasn't his fault. The whole thing was because of 2 incidents.
It was a stupid payback from Rantanen, Coronado hit him on the hand 5-10 sec. before and he saw red but yet didnt hit at full speed but still stupid as f…
But Rasmus Anderson from Calgary did not got called from his illegal hit towards Rantanen just minutes before. Everybody agreed the Refs made mistake. Of course Rantanen thought he could do the same. Mikko has never been suspended even ones in 11 years. Even after this 1 suspension Rantanen is one of the cleanest players in hockey. Mcdavid has 3 multigame suspensions and Makar has 1. The only reason Dallas cannot win the cup is because they are soft like noodles.
He should've gotten three games. Since joining the Stars Mikko is apprently being schooled by Jamie Benn.
