Review of Lightning vs Rangers, Canadiens vs Avalanche, Oilers vs Kraken

Welcome back. All right, first of two reviews today. So, full notes and all that will be full notes tonight as well. Um, eight more games to come and then I’ll look at the standings as well. So, we don’t look at the standings with the matinea portion of the review. And, uh, we’re going to start things off talking about the Tampa Bay Lightning in New York against the Rangers. So, it’s Johansson versus Shusterkin. Quiet shot, quiet start, I should say. Uh, the first shot on net is by Tampa at three and a half minutes. uh Coutrov is a net feed that’s kicked aside and by 5 1/2 minutes the shots are four nothing for Tampa. So this is a very familiar storyline for the New York Rangers when they’re at home uh getting outplayed. In fact uh the Rangers get hemmed in. There’s a near miss by Homeberg at the net. Uh Gensel fires one wide on a breakaway. Cellis tonight as Tampa gets some more pressure. And the first Ranger shot was by Susi at 9 minutes and 29 seconds. And then at 10 minutes and 53 seconds, Hegel opens the scoring for Tampa. It’s a point shot that goes in off Susi’s skate. The assist to Radish and Cuchov. So, it’s Radish versus Radish in this game. Uh the Rangers press with 7 minutes left. There’s a post for Gurgensson’s. The Rangers clear the puck. Uh then there’s a power play for New York that’s killed off. No shots on net. The Rangers did not generate much in the way of shots today at all. Uh Panaran gets denied in the closing seconds on what was the second shot of the period by the New York Rangers. So, it’s one- nothing Tampa after one. And I would imagine the Rangers felt pretty fortunate that they were only down by one when they were outshot so badly. But second period, early press by the New York Rangers. Hegel fires one wide as Tampa Bay gets some pressure of their own. Good for checking by Tampa. Eventually, the Lightning draw power play. There’s a short-handed rush chance by Taylor Radish that helps to finish that. Uh the shots on net are four nothing Tampa at 7 minutes. The Rangers get some pressure 8 minutes in. Troche has a tip shot that’s caught and held. And then at 858, Hegel buries his own rebound on a breakaway. So his second goal of the game, Cooerov and Radish with the assist. So Darren Radish with a couple helpers. And 30 minutes into this game, the Rangers had four shots. Four. So while I was watching the Rangers broadcast and they were doing their best to, you know, really sort of boost the Rangers if they can get a couple opportunities and it just wasn’t there. Uh the Rangers get some pressure with 9 minutes left. The Bolts get pinned down a little bit. So Johansson holds so they can get a change. Shots are 10 to five Tampa with 5 and a half minutes left. And then at 1731 it’s posted in on a net feed. JT Miller with the goal. Fox and Zanagad with the assists making the score 2 to1. But with 18.1 seconds left. There’s a power play for Tampa. So that rolls over into the third period with the Lightning ahead 2 to1. Uh Paul has a net feed that’s held. The Rangers do finish the kill, but not long after it 202. Uh Nick Paul buries a net feed. uh Cooerov and Dustuse with the assists. So, it’s a 3 to1 lead. Shots are 4 nothing Tampa at 4 and a half minutes. The Rangers did not have a good start to any of the periods in this game. Uh the Rangers with some pressure at 6 minutes, but they don’t get shots out of it. Uh pressure by Tampa at 9 minutes. The fans are getting restless. Rangers get pinned down. Totally understandable. Tickets aren’t cheap at Madison Square Garden. Um New York draws a power play. The Rangers call a timeout during the power play to try to figure something out. It still gets killed off. There’s a press by New York after it’s done. The goalie pull outs with 227 left. There’s an empty net miss by Hegel looking for the hat-tick. An empty net miss by Cusherov as well. The Rangers ice the puck with 134 left. So that forces the goalie back in briefly. And then at 1942, it’s an empty net goal. Jake Gensel, Yanni Gourd with the assist. And so we have Boobirds to close out the game. Uh the Tampa Lightning with a bit of revenge after losing at home. I believe it was 7 to3 against the Rangers. They go into New York. They win 4 to1 today. So shots on net favored Tampa the whole way. 11-2 in the first, 16-6 in the second, 8-4 in the third. Final shots 35-12 for the New York Rangers. Uh both teams went 0 for2 on the power or 35 to 12 for Tampa. I’m tired. 35 to 12 for Tampa. Uh both teams went 0 for two on the power play. Uh the hits 23 to6 for the Rangers because they didn’t have the puck. So again, the shots on net 11-2 in the first, 16-6 in the second, 8-4 in the third for the Lightning. Uh Johansson wasn’t busy. 11 saves on 12 shots. Shistaken 31 saves on 34 shots. All right, next up, the Montreal Canadians and the Colorado Avalanche. The Avalanche wearing Nordiks. So I thought, all right, I’ll I’ll play along. I only have five goal magnets, though, for Nordics. I want the Avalanche to be aware I only have five. So, if they could just stop at five, that’d be great. Anyways, uh Dovish versus Black within this one. Early pressure by Montreal. Nelson has a rush chance that’s held. We get a power play for Montreal. Buluke has a one-time that’s denied. That power play is killed off. Montreal had a great start to this. They were leading in shots 8-2. 6 and 1/2 minutes in, but at 7:32, Nelson with a wrist from the slot on a rush makes it one- nothing for the Avalanche wearing the verdicts. Um Lechin and Ki Ronto with the assists. Evans then has a rush chance that’s held. Anderson was robbed on a net drive. So the Montreal Canadians trying to answer. Near miss for Cfield. Then the ABS rush. The ABS score. There’s a goalie interference challenge. I didn’t think they should have challenged it. Eventually the goal gets changed. So it becomes Landiscott’s goal. Originally it was Nelson’s. That’s something to keep in mind. Nelson and Colton with the assist at 1325. So it becomes an ABS power play because the goal counts. The challenge fails. Power play is killed off. One shot on net. The ABS with some pressure after it’s done. The Canadians with some pressure of their own with three and a half minutes left. McKinnon then has a rush chance that’s held. It’s two nothing for Colorado after one. And that momentum really did uh change after that first goal. Uh second period, Mat’s denied from the slot. There’s a post for Nelson on a rush. And then at 48 seconds, Brett Burns scores from Nelson. So there you go. It’s 3 nothing. The ABS look for another. Nas has a one-timer that’s caught and held. And then at 354, Nelson puts one in from the side of the net. Nas and Leken with the assists. Now fans heard Nelson announced as the goal scorer for both of those goals in the first period and so they thought it was a hat-tick goal. So they threw their hats on the ice. It was not a hat-tick. Um I think you should be allowed to get your hat back at that point. Uh so the ABS were really in control after that slow start in the first period until 827. Demidov buries a net feed to make it four to one. The assist to Slovsky and Kappan. Uh the ABS then they pressure for response. The shots are 8 to five for Colorado with 5 and a half minutes left. Pressure by Montreal with 5 minutes left. Florian and Jack eyes stick breaks on a rush opportunity he had. We get two minutes of four with 156 left and the ABS would score during the fouron four. At 1905, McKinnon deposits a rebound. Landiskog and Mar with the assists. It is 5 to1 for the Avalanche after two. And all I could think was I’m out of goal magnets. I have some other magnets that are bigger for the for the Nordics. And I was thinking it’s going to get dodgy from use those huge ones. So, uh, Dobson’s denied. The ABS rush and at 251 the ABS score. Uh, Taves puts one in off Mat stick. Nasious with the assist. So, that makes it 6 to1. We get a power play for Montreal. They score on it. It’s Hudson with a one-time from the slot at 510. Cfield and Suzuki with the assists, but then the ABS draw a power play. They score on theirs as well at 652. It’s a screenshot tipped in by Gabriel Landiskog. So, a couple of goals today for him. The assist to McKinnon and Natious there. The ABS go back to the power play. That’s killed off. Post and out for Suzuki on a rush. Uh, the ABS get another power play before the period’s done. That’s killed off as well. But your final score is 7 to2 for the Avalanche wearing Nordiks. I went with the Nordics WHA jersey today cuz why not? Uh, so the no mercy magnets on the board. They were one goal short of an 80s game. Shots on that favored Colorado the whole way. 14-12 Colorado in the first, 10 to 5 Colorado in the second, 12-6 Colorado in the third. Final shots 36 to 23 for the Avalanche. Power plays Montreal 1 for2. Colorado 1 for four of the hits. 27-13 for Montreal. Dovich had a rough game, but Colorado has a lot of goalies having rough games. 29 saves on 36 shots. Blackwood solid. 21 saves on 23 shots. He doesn’t get the shut out, but he does get the win. And he has a 913 save percentage in the game. So, not too shabby. All right, moving along. The final game we shall discuss for now is the Edmonton Oilers in Seattle against the Kraken. So, Skinner versus Tord in this one. Early jump for the Oilers. In fact, the shots are four nothing Edmonton 2 minutes in. Uh the shots do not stay at that rate for the whole game. Uh Cartier hits the side of the net on a two-on-one rush. Majapani has a wister that’s caught and held. Dry Cidle has a turnover chance that’s held as well. Uh pressure by Edmonton at 7 and 1/2 minutes. Seattle draws a power play that’s killed off. Uh then we get a power play for Edmonton and they score on it at 11:29. Nan Hopkins buries one on what was a good cycle by the Oilers. Bousard and McDavid with the assists. So one- nothing in favor of the Edmonton Oilers at that stage. Marchman has the slot shot that deflects high. Shots are 10 to five for the Oilers with 5 1/2 minutes left. Uh 306 left. The Kraken get a power play. That becomes a minute and 45 seconds of five on three. Normally I’m standing here telling you that’s too much time, but the Oilers kill it off. Three total shots for Seattle. Their power play today really cost them. Uh 20.6 seconds left. Seattle goes back to the power play. So that’s rolling over into the second period. The Oilers up one- nothing. Uh short-handed Yanmark rush uh helps to prevent that setup for the Kraken. The Kraken never really got set up on that power play. It ends up being killed off without a shot early in that second period. Uh in fact, there were no shots on net by either team 4 and 1/2 minutes in. This game went fast for a while. It slowed down a lot in the third though. Um, Kraken get another power play. Beneers has a slot shot that’s held. Kton has has a chance on the rush. That’s denied. Those are the two shots on that power play. It’s killed off. Uh, there’s a press by Edmonton. They’re kept to the outside, but then at 12 minutes and 30 seconds, Dryidle makes it two nothing for Edmonton. The assist to Majapani and Emerson. So, the Oilers with a little bit of insurance. Uh, the Oilers get some pressure for another. Shots are four to three for Abson with 5 and 1/2 minutes left. Majapani has a net drive chance that’s blocked. And then with 135 left, the Oilers go to the power play and they score on it. Uh it goes in off Zackman’s skate from the doorstep. Dryle and Nan Hopkins with the assists at 1851. So goal for Zack Heyman makes it 3 nothing and that’s your score through two periods of play. In the third, there’s an early press by Seattle near miss for Tolvin and from the side of the net. Uh Everly’s denied from the doorstep. The Oilers with some pressure at 4 and 1/2 minutes. And then at 6:25, the Oilers expand on their lead. McDavid puts one through to court on a rush. I think he was expecting a pass. Wasn’t expecting the shot. McDavid gets this one from Heyman and Echome. Uh Pud Coulson then has a net drive chance to save the Oilers with some pressure at 8 and 1/2 minutes. Uh things get pushing a hole by Skinner and there was a lot of that in the second half of the period. The shots are four apiece with nine minutes left. Clattenberg has a fight with Gudro. Kraken come out of that with a power play. There was an extra two for Clattenburg. Power plays killed off. Just great penalty kill by the Oilers and futile power play by Seattle. Uh Pagoula has a fight with Cartier and there were more scrums. 10-minute misconducts being handed out and it took a while to finish, but we’re here. It is still before 4:00 when the next four games get started. And the Oilers, speaking of fours, win this one four nothing. So, the Tony the Tiger magnets on the board because Skinner was great. And this is the thing with Stuart Skinner. He can look awful in one game, great in the next. You never know. Uh shots on net in this one 1211 Seattle in the first, 8-6 Edmonton in the second, 8-6 Seattle in the third. Final shots 26 to 25 for Seattle. Power plays, Edmonton scored on both of theirs. Seattle went 0 for six. The hits 19 to 18 Edmonton. Skinner saves all 26 shots for the shut out and Dord saved 21 out of 25 at the other end. So there you go. You’re caught up on the first three games. Now watch the other eight and we’ll review those later. But let me know your thoughts in the comments section below. 1. Noooooooooo!!! I wanted the Nordiques? to lose. Eh, whatever. If we beat the Habs so easily, one can only expect them to do it also. I wonder if the Nords will ever make a permanent return.🤔My Stars don't play today, so I don't have much else to think about. Starsforever❤

  2. Tampa has been on this run without their top 3 defensemen and multiple injuries in their forward group. Tampa has had as many as 7 ahlers playing for them in games recently…

  3. I thought it was no goal and Carlo during TSN’s intermission agreed so I didn’t feel entirely crazy. Tough game to watch all around. Disappointing after a feel good win less than 24 hours earlier.

  4. Lightning vs. Rangers delivered exactly the kind of high-pressure hockey you expect from two teams built for big moments. Tampa leaned on their transition game and elite puck movement to generate quality looks, but New York answered with structure, speed through the neutral zone, and a goaltender who refused to blink. The turning point came in the third, when the Rangers tightened their gaps and turned Lightning rushes into one-and-done chances. Tampa pushed late, but New York’s composure under fire was the difference. A fast, physical, momentum-swinging game — and a reminder that these two aren’t far apart at all.

  5. I never thought Landeskog would play again this time last year, now he's scoring in bunches. So happy for him, that road to recovery was difficult but I'm happy he is getting to play more and hopefully retire on his terms.

  6. When the season began, Tickets for the NY Rangers were approximately $200 on the 200-300 levels (depending on the match up), $350+ on lower level, and $800-1300 per ticket on the Delta section and up against the plexiglass. Rangers home record (2-8-1) can be a glass half full if you are looking for discounted resale tickets.
Remember fondly when Jacob Trouba got into that scuffle and threw his glove that it ignited the Rangers to finish 2 games from the Stanley Cup Finals. This 2025 team looked like a squad on Thorazine. No heart. No passion. Just going through the motions.
Rangers desperately need a guy who can motivate and I’m sorry but JT Miller is NOT that guy.

  7. We will see tomorrow in the Power ranking if you drop the Avs to 7th because the had the shootout loss to Minn. My guess is you will have your beloved Stars in first due to you clear bias.

  8. Greetings, Shannon. I'm sorry but your first order of business needs to be what's with that Jersey of yours.. it's looks like a modernized Nordiques jersey.. is it from a major Juniors team? i really dig it. Please explain.
Edit: all right I know it has to be related to the avalanche but I still need more data, thanks.

  9. 1 real loss in 25 games-& 16 straight without regulation loss. I can barely believe I'm saying that. Just imagine if they weren't 1-6 in gimicky OT,& even more gimicky shootouts. But I think we will forgive them for that. Still on pace for 138 points.

  10. Oilers will beat the Avs in the WCF. Its like people have amnesia or something when it comes to these teams. Last 2 years Oilers look like rubbish early season and then just steamroll the western conference come playoff time. Why is it going to be any different this year? Avs have looked good before in regular season and not so good in playoffs
