Would be a mistake to trade him

  1. It’s called being cheap, and trying to figure out ways to be even cheaper. Fuck the Ricketts.

  2. First I’m hearing this. Sounds like typical off season media drama that’s not real just so they get clicks.

  3. The article itself says “the buzz is entirely media-generated at this point.” Writers gotta write.

  4. one of the worst fanalyst sites for sure

Edit: the third post down on their Cubs page is about us trading for Skubal. We should just ban this site

  5. The only way it makes sense is if some other team puts a huge value on him as a SS AND the Cubs sign a guy like Bregman, which would then push Shaw over to 2B. You could argue for trading Nico for a great SP or something.

Even then it feels like an unnecessary risk.

  6. Unless Skubal or Skenes is coming the other way, the answer is no. And even then, it’s probably a no.

  7. Trading Nico for a top SP and then signing Bichette would likely make the team better.

Trading Nico without signing a top FA bat absolutely makes us worse.

But nobody actually believes they’ll spend the money on Bichette or even Bregman so…

Oh ok here’s a wild notion. Padres don’t have a 2nd baseman, so maybe we trade Nico straight up for Tatis??

  8. Trading Nico would not be smart. He helped us win a lot of games last year. I doubt anybody that comes in after him will help us win more.

  9. There was “talk” of this last offseason too. Cubs have a stockpile of MI talent at both the mlb and minor league levels. If the front office wants to clear space for free agents or prospects Nico would theoretically be an option as he’s in the last year of his deal. His defense and base running are top notch, and his bat provides something the rest of the lineup tends to lack, but the league doesn’t necessarily value highly. Shaw is young and cheap, Swanson is in a long term deal, Nico is the odd man out, in theory.

  10. meatball clickbait.

but even if there were anything to it: basically nobody should ever be considered untouchable. if a trade makes the team better, it’s a no-brainer. championships aren’t won with vibes.

i remember the 2012-2015 era when all the meatballs were up in arms about theo and jed trading away all the fan favs in dempster, cashner, garza, samardza, geo soto, etc. those trades along with other moves ushered in the core that won the title. need to be ruthless.

  11. Cubs shopped him last year and he is entering the final year of his deal so it’s not crazy to entertain it/ its not just media buzz. There’s a few dots worthy of connecting. Cubs are not an organization that does these types of trades in competitive windows though. I would find it hard to believe that a team would trade for Nico and give up prospects or young MLB talent that makes the 2026 Cubs better. That should be the focus.

  12. Heard it last year, thought we were past it. If they get rid of Nico, I might stop watching

  13. It’d be silly to trade vs extend right now, doing so would be cheaper than a FA at 3B, the insurance he provides to Swanson getting hurt is incalculable, and we are a couple years away from an impact prospect maybe being ready up the middle.
