The K/9 could use some work
I could do that if I only had to face drunk Irish farm boys
3.8 bWAR lol
“Don’t start something you can’t finish.”
Ok, but how many Cy Young’s did he win?
“Say my name.”
“You’re Heisenberg”
“Who?”
(Werner Heisenberg was born in 1901)
Serious question: How do you give up 404 runs and only give up 150 earned runs? Were his position players the Bad News Bears?
All that to lose the Cy Young award to some guy with 44 wins and a 3.50 ERA
Candy Cummings was a PROBLEM!
When the pitcher looks like Toadsworth you know you’re cooked
Didn’t this guy throw underhand in an era where the pitcher was more of a play-starter for his team than a duelist with the batter? Not to mention that earned/unearned runs ratio is super ridiculous and unreliable
The ol’ two man pitching rotation of yesteryear
Will White was no Old Hoss Radbourn, I’ll tell ya hwat. White threw underhanded while Hoss Radbourn had to throw overhand like a *real* man
24? That dude was 24?!?
What was the one game he didn’t complete?
Also that is a crazy walk rate – truly elite – and I gotta say I like that this dude challenged hitters and relied on his fielders. Did they let him down? Oh yeah. Time and again. But he kept the faith. And how can you not like 4 less hits than innings pitched? Is it impressive over 200 innings? Not very. But over 680?? Still no, but, kind of!
10 HR in 680 innings. Helps when there’s no fence and the ball is an apple.
I mean didn’t dudes still toss underhand back then? Pitching was more a means of getting game to take place rather than a part of the defense IIRC
Dude lost 31 games. Just awful
Old Hoss Radbourn can relate.
Brother of hall of famer Deacon White
Will White? Walt Weiss?
More like the Cincinnati Whites.
Imagine explaining to this dude that we’re still tracking his stats 146 years later and reading about it on our magic glowing rectangles we look at while pooping
IIRC he’s also the first known player to wear glasses while playing. A hero to lousy vision-havers everywhere!
“People forget how good 1879 Will White was.”
You’ll have to forgive us
Only 37% of his runs were earned, only 1 home run allowed per 68 innings, and averaged 3k / 9IP.
Was every position player a singles hitter that made tons of contact but could not field for their lives?
I think people also forget how bad all the other players were. A good baseball player in 1879 might not make a college team nowadays.
Just looked up this dudes Baseball reference page, and how the fuck do you throw nearly 700 innings with a sub 2 era and only manage 3.8 war?
24yo looking like 40. 🙂
His brother Deacon White also played and is in the HOF as of 2013, almost 125 years after he last played.
They also had a cousin Elmer White, who had a short stint.

I use this family in Immaculate Grid quite often.
