And we are of course part of the Locked Podcast Network. now the number one sports podcast network. So, the Rangers were largely terrible in this game at home against Tampa Bay and a game that obviously continued their home wos. A game that I truly believe is in contention for, you know, possibly their worst performance of the season. If it’s not the worst, it’s certainly right up there. unfortunate too because the Rangers had obviously gotten back to basics. Had a nice three-game winning streak going for themselves here and you’re back at home against Tampa and uh you know hopefully ready to turn things around on Garden Ice and the Rangers obviously were not able to do it. Just a nothing burger. That’s the best word for everything we saw for 60 minutes from this Ranger team. An absolute nothing burger. No reason during these 60 minutes to ever get excited. No reason to think that that the tide was going to turn. No play really that got you excited. I mean, I guess you could say the goal by JT Miller cuz in theory it got the Rangers back into the game, but I mean, I don’t know. Did anybody really think the Rangers were coming back at that point, the way they had played for 38 minutes up to the JT Miller goal for me at least? You know, that was not a sign of what was to come. I mean, you’re always hopeful, but it never really had a feel of, okay, the the game is going to turn in the Rangers favor now. There was never any sustained pressure. There was never any, you know, uh, second and third chances in the offensive zone. There wasn’t any intensity. And it’s just unacceptable. And again, I do know that this team won three in a row. I understand that. And they definitely did some good things. Uh I know that the Raiders also were playing their fourth game in six days. But you know what? So too was the Tampa Bay Lightning. They themselves played four games in six days. I feel like just about the entire NHL is on a backtoback right now. And you look at, you know, the lay of the land here. I mean, you won’t find a fairer deal than that. Both teams playing four times in six days. Tampa was hungrier. uh more focus from the opening faceoff, more intense from the opening faceoff, and it never really changed. I mean, not even for two or three minutes. Go through this game and try to find a single threeminut stretch where it looked like the Rangers had the better of play against Tampa. I’m not sure those three minutes ever occurred uh during this game here. And if you want any kind of statistical proof, there’s nowhere better to look than the shots on goal totals uh really at any point in this game. You know, the the end of the first period, the end of the second period, the end of the game. you know, break it up however you’d like. The shots on goal, they don’t always tell the story, but they certainly did in this game. At the end of this game, Tampa had outshot the Rangers 35-13. 35-13. The Rangers did not get their second shot on goal until about 5 seconds remained in the first period. They only had four shots on goal in the third period. A third period in which you trailed by either one or two goals for the vast majority of it. Obviously, Tampa got the the late empty netter to really salt it away, but break it down individually, too. Not a single player on this Ranger team had more than two shots on goal. JT Miller, one shot on goal. It was the goal that he scored. And honestly, I mean, yes, it goes into the uh the record books, the stat books as a shot on goal. And obviously, we’re happy that Miller was able to crash the net there and get a little bit of a dirty goal for the Rangers. That’s something that they could certainly use more of moving forward. But did he actually like take a shot in this game? not one that went on net because this wasn’t really a shot. And in fact, I don’t even think it hit his stick. It looked like it was more, you know, off of his skate and into the net. So JT Miller, I mean, if we’re being generous, had a shot on goal in a literal sense, he had one shot on goal, no shots on goal for Alexi Lafrener. Shocking. Uh, one shot on goal for Mika Zabanagad. You know, one game after one game after he scores twice and comes this close to a hat-tick. All onetimes, the guy goes out there and gets one shot on goal. Shoot the puck, Ma. I mean, granted, it’s hard to shoot the puck when you know, you never have the puck, but at a certain point, I mean, just start firing the puck at the net. At a certain point, you got to get pucks at the net and make life a little bit difficult for Johansson back there. But again, you know, beyond the shots on goal, beyond any stats, you guys watch hockey just like I do. You could watch this game and know the Rangers were flat. I mean, there was uh there was an instance in this game that really stood out for me, and that was what happened to Adam Fox in the third period. Fox is behind the Ranger net, behind the goal line there. He’s going back to get the puck. He moves the puck and he gets absolutely crunched into the boards by Hegel. Now, granted, clean hit all the way. I’m not, you know, screaming for a suspension or a fine or anything like that. It was a clean hit. It’s a guy finishing his check, but you’re the New York Rangers. How does this not get you fired up a little bit? How do you not at some point go after Hegel here or just ratchet up the intensity a little bit or start playing a little bit better? start playing a little bit more fire, a little bit more urgency. The Rangers were down 3-1 at this point. There were 13 minutes to go and in theory they were still in the game. I mean, that’s plenty of time to score two goals. But again, you watch the way the Rangers played before this hit. You watch the way the Rangers played after this hit. There was never a good reason to believe that the Rangers were going to have any kind of like offensive onslaught after this. But how about just a response of any kind? How about getting in Hegel’s face? How about laying a big hit on Tampa at some point in the game? The only extremely slight thing I’ll say in the Rangers defense is the situation in the game being down by two goals trying to rally. In theory, they’re trying to rally, although you didn’t really see much of it. Um, so you might be in a situation where you feel like you can’t go after somebody you can’t afford to take a penalty, but at some point there’s just got to be a response. You know, this is Adam Fox. This is far and away uh your best defenseman, one of the top players in the team, and he’s getting crunched in the boards. Aren’t you sick of Hegel at this point? I mean, he’s already scored two goals against you. Now he just took out your best defenseman. His goal I mean he’s scoring these goals and he’s celebrating like it’s, you know, game seven overtime of a playoff game. Aren’t you tired of this guy? Get in his face a little bit and do something. I’m not saying to take a run at him or try to give him a concussion or anything like that, but there’s got to be some kind of response from the Rangers. Even if it’s not Hegel, go after somebody. Get a piece of somebody. Get in somebody’s face. You know, talk a little bit, chatter, whatever it’s got to be. Yell at somebody, you know, from your bench to their bench. Do something. The Rangers did absolutely nothing. And it’s unacceptable. Fox did not come back in this game and now we all hold our breath. I did see right before hitting record here uh Vince Maragle said that uh I mean it’s not much of an update but it’s something uh that Adam Fox has an upper body injury and that uh it sounds like he’s still being evaluated that per Mike Sullivan. So if the Rangers do know anything beyond that uh they didn’t tell the reporters and obviously none of us know as of this recording either. But um yeah, I mean Fox if he has to miss time, it’s going to be very unfortunate for the Rangers. You know, you just look at the way they were lining up in this game after Adam Fox was out once he, you know, wasn’t going to come back into the game. I mean, think about this. The Rangers had a power play after this and they went with five forwards. Now, you can do that. That’s an option. But this to me felt more like a case of the Rangers being forced into it than anything else. you know, they have uh you know, Koulie, JT, and Mika and Troche out there and Paneran and um even when the Rangers pulled your sturkin late in this game, it was all of those guys plus L frontier. So, you have a power play with five forwards and then you have an empty net situation and you go with six forwards. That tells you everything you need to know about the lack of offensive threats when it comes to the Ranger defenseman. I mean, if you were going to put somebody on the ice in that situation, a defenseman, I would think it would probably be Braden Schneider because he’s the guy that’s been quarterbacking the second power play unit, and I think he’s the the best equipped of the other Raider defenseman to go out there and handle himself in a situation like that. I’d throw out a little bit of an honorable mention to Gavricov as well. He’s certainly not known for his offensive heroics, but you watch him, he’s got good mobility, he’s a pretty good skater. Um, he’s a good passer. I think overall he makes good decisions when he does have the puck. I wouldn’t hate Gricoff being out on the ice in that kind of situation either, but I mean Gavoff, you know, quarterbacking your top power play, Brandon Schneider quarterbacking your top power play, that sounds a little bit dicey. It doesn’t sound like an ideal situation. Now, there is somebody, and we’re going to talk about him a little bit later, that could do it, and that’s Scott Morrow. Uh, but we’ll save that for a little bit later in today’s episode when we discuss the Rainer defenseman and everything that’s going on there. Obviously, Borggan was back in this game. But my question to the Rangers, too, I mean to begin with, again, I I got to reiterate, why didn’t you do anything after what happened to Adam Fox happened to Adam Fox? That’s my first question. But the other question that I have for this team, whatever happened to playing with some FU? Whatever happened to No BS? I mean, the Raiders were downright polite in this game. They never had any kind of uh like like friction or tension or any kind of a standoff with Tampa Bay. Uh they pretty much just let Tampa Bay go out there and do whatever they wanted. And the only instance I can think of where maybe this wasn’t the case, you know, after the whistle, some extracurriculars, uh, we had a little bit of a scrum after Johansson had held on to the puck for Tampa. Carrick was in the middle of it, you know, trying to mix things up and, you know, presumably light a fire under his guys, but nothing really came of it. It didn’t really get that nasty or anything like that. And, um, again, it’s just unacceptable. It’s unacceptable to be this flat, you know, flat as a pancake for a game like this against a tough opponent in your barn where you’ve struggled this year and you should be doing everything possible to try to write the ship. And we didn’t see any of that from the New York Rangers. And to not respond after Adam Fox went down, clean hit or not, there has to be a response there. And there was no response from the Rangers. That is unacceptable. So, all right, burial over. We’ll we’ll stop uh, you know, really going after these guys. But we do have a couple other things to say. I do want to talk about a missed opportunity that the Rangers had in this game, not taking advantage of not having to face Vazaleki. And I’m also going to talk about the Rangers own goalie situation with Igor and Quick who might be coming back and also Guran who was rumored to maybe play in this game, maybe get the start here, but obviously did not. We’ll have some thoughts on all that in just a second. And then we’ll talk a little bit later about the defenseman controversy in just a little bit. Huge shout out to the everyday as always. In our next episode, I think we’re going to kind of reflect on everything that happened with the Rangers in November. Also, look ahead uh to December. There’s a lot of uh interesting games on the schedule for December. We’re going to walk through that and just have some thoughts about, you know, some things that the Rangers have done well and things that they need to do better uh moving forward. But that’s in the next episode. For right now, let’s talk a little bit about uh just just an array of goalie news here. First of all, a little bit of a call out for the Raiders in this one because they really caught a break here. One day after they did not have to face Jeremy Swayman of the Boston Bruins, they did not have to face Andre Vasilki of the Tampa Bay Lightning. We got Johansson instead. Tampa had won six in a row coming into this game. And my thought here was I mean well my first thought I guess was being thankful that okay this is great like we don’t have to face you know the franchise goalie over there and that’s all well and good um but we you end up getting Johansson. My first thought was take this personally if you’re the Rangers. You know, use this to light a fire under you. Make yourself believe that Tampa Bay is coming in here. And this is a team that, you know, the Rangers Tampa, they’ve had a little bit of a nasty rivalry. I think honestly, ever since the playoff matchup a bunch of years back here, you know, the temperature is uh has increased. You wouldn’t know it in the game today because there just wasn’t much of any of that. But take it personally. Take it personally that Tampa Bay doesn’t feel like they need their franchise goalie against you. And I don’t think that’s what Tampa Bay is doing here. Like I mentioned a second ago, they were playing a back-to-back. They were playing four games in six days. Sooner or later, you know, every goalie needs a break. But just do some mental gymnastics. You know, trick yourself into believing that that they don’t think they need to go with their top goalie against us. But if the Rangers did that, it certainly didn’t show. And honestly, forget about, you know, Vaselki or Johansson or anybody else. Tampa Bay would have beaten the Rangers with an ECHL goalie in this game here today because again, the Rangers just did nothing to cause any kind of traffic. There were no second chance opportunities other than the goal by JT Miller. There was nothing even resembling a dirty goal opportunity. I think the third line might have been in the crease, you know, fighting for a puck in one instance, but very, very little of that. No deflections, you know, no screening of the goalie. Just a very, very comfortable, easy afternoon for Johansson. And that’s obviously not what you want to hear if you’re a fan of the New York Rangers, as I assume most of you are. Um, as far as the Rangers and and going with Igor Shurken for the second game of back-to-back in the fourth game in six days, I was I was good with it. I was okay with it. Um, obviously Quick is not available and Eigor is your franchise goalie, whereas Dylan Garand has never played an NHL game, but I will say this, just like it didn’t matter that Tampa Bay did not play Vazaleki, it didn’t matter that the Rangers did play Igor Sister Sturken for all the reasons I just mentioned. I thought Eigore was great in this game. He made some really tough saves in deep. A couple of uh difficult stops on shots from the slot. Uh couple of uh you know oddman rushes. There was a breakaway or two where he was able to come up with the stop uh in those situations. I mean the one Gensel shot it wide, but overall Igor was very very good in this game. Kept the lifeless Rangers in this game for as long as he possibly could, but the Rangers were just never going to raise their play to a level that it actually mattered um how well Eeyore Sturken was playing. Off the top of your head right now, try to name a New York Ranger that had a good showing in this game other than Eigor Shurken. Not sure that player exists. So, that’ll give you an idea of how this how this game went. Anybody that uh that watched this game, I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir. But the other thought I had here as it pertains to Dylan Durant, cuz there was part of me that wanted to see him play, like I liked Egore going back out there, but I think anytime there’s a prospect, you know, that that has a chance to make his NHL debut and he’s in the building, you know, there’s that curiosity factor, right? Like how would this kid do with the Rangers? Is he ready for the NHL? And the case of Dylan Guran, is he ready to be uh, you know, the Rangers primary backup in the next couple of seasons? Now, let me also say real quick here, let me interject with this. As long as Quick wants to be a Ranger, as long as he keeps playing the way he’s playing, I’m good with resetting him to one-year deals after one year deal after one year deal. But you can still get a look at Dylan Garand, you have an idea for, you know, if he’s ready for prime time if he’s ready for NHL hockey. And again, the curiosity factor is there as well. But the reason I’m happy that Grant did actually not end up starting this game is because I would have hated for this to be his first taste of NHL action. I would have hated for this to be his first uh you know experience playing between the pipes as a goalie for the New York Rangers because as we just mentioned a second ago, Eagor got virtually no help, virtually no support in just about any facet from the New York Rangers in this game. And so I wouldn’t have wanted to s subject Dylan Garand to that in his debut. Now, there’s a counterargument to be made that maybe had they gone with Dylan Garand, it’s possible the Rangers would have kind of seen that as a call to arms and like, okay, the kid’s in net, he’s a rookie, it’s his NHL debut, let’s make sure we bring it for him and let’s make sure, you know, with Eeyore, they always kind of see him as a safety net. I don’t think they’d look at Dylan Garan that way. And so, maybe they would have stepped it up a little bit, but honestly, it’s very, very difficult to watch what we just saw here today and believe that anything would be any better if, you know, Dylan Gar played this game instead of Eey or Shurken. Never say never. Anything’s possible. But again, the proof was in the pudding for 60 long, agonizing minutes today of New York Ranger hockey that that nobody playing goal would have made any difference uh in this game for this team. So, I I think we’re getting to a point now where it’s certainly looking like Garand is going to have to wait a while to make his NHL debut. I I still think it’ll end up happening at some point this season. Um, if you look at his AHL resume, he is somebody that’s gotten better over the seasons that he’s spent there with the Hartford Wolfpack. Now, he is off to a little bit of a slow start this season with Hartford. 36 and2 with a 296 goals against average and 897 save percentage and one shut out. But this is somebody that typically from one season to the next. And I I think that’ll eventually be the case this season too. From one season to the next does get better and better. And somebody who uh really I think kind of turns some heads. certainly caught my attention a couple of seasons ago uh two seasons ago and three seasons ago with some of the work that he put in for the Wolfpack uh during their you know run through the playoffs in the uh CER playoffs and I I would uh I would love to have seen more of that. I got to see a little bit of it. I think uh some of us certainly shifted our attention to Hartford when the Rangers went out in the first round a couple of years ago, but he’s been really good there and that’s obviously something that’s very impressive. And also some more news on the goalie front here. Per multiple reports, it sounds like Jonathan Quick is right to come back as soon as that happens. You know, Guran is heading back to the Harford for Wolfpack. But that’s obviously good news. You know, Jonathan Quick has been very good. Um, and he Quick, that is has been skating and is eligible uh to come off IR as soon as tomorrow, which is Sunday. So, it’s possible that Quick ends up getting the game against the Stars on Tuesday. And granted, that is 3 days from now. So, in theory, you should be able to go right back to Eigor. But it’s also possible that the Rangers, you know, if Quick is coming back for that game, that they knew that and they were going to wait until Quick was back to give Eigore a day off. And obviously Eigor’s played very well up to this game and including this game if we’re being honest. And um you know, the temptation to run him back out there, I’m sure, was strong for Sullivan and the coaching staff. And I think that’s why you saw what you saw today. Uh them going with Igor and not Gar. But uh it is what it is. Obviously, we’ll uh keep an eye on the injury situation. You know, Will Borggan was back in this game. We’re going to talk about him and the other Ranger defenseman in just a second. But getting Jonathan Quick back, that’ll be obviously a positive development for this team as well. But we’re going to talk about the injury to Adam Fox a little bit more and how that affects the Ranger defenseman alignment uh moving forward. And we’re going to get to all of that in just a second. All right, let’s go ahead and wrap up today’s episode of Lockdown New York Rangers by talking a little bit about the uh Rainer defenseman situation. to begin with. Uh Will Borggan was back in this game and uh he ended up missing I believe the final count was a total of five games and somebody that’s obviously been a a very consistent very steady member of that blue line. I mean certainly not a superstar but somebody that I think a lot of us are certainly excited uh to get back into the lineup and he is now back. He was out there playing alongside Carson Susie on the second line and Borggan. This to me was interesting too. He steps into the lineup in place of Scott Morrow. Um, you know, Morrow, it’s crazy what’s going on with Morrow. So, he was with the Rangers, then he got I mean, he didn’t make the team out of training camp, but he got called up, then he got sent back down, then he played one game with the Wolfpack, then he got called back up by the Rangers, played in the most recent game against Boston, and now once again, a healthy scratch for this game. Now, as far as Morrow goes, you want to make a case for him to be on the Rangers, I’ll certainly hear you out. I I do think right now he’s probably best served to get some more development, some more ice time with the Harford Wolfpacks. Certainly he’d get more ice time in Harford than he’s going to get with the Rangers right now. And I feel like uh in theory that would be the move. The one thing that kind of makes me change my mind on this a little bit right now though is that we don’t know what’s going on with Adam Fox. And you know, we’ll see. Hopefully in the next episode we get to talk about that. You know, we’ll have an Adam Fox update and obviously fingers crossed that he’s okay and he’s ready to go as soon as the next game on Tuesday. However, if Fox is not able to play in the next game or games beyond that, then I think you really, really, really need Scott Morrow in the lineup. Morrow is one of the I mean, I don’t want to say he’s the only defenseman that can kind of fill in for Adam Fox in some of his roles, but as far as like an offensive defenseman, I mean, he’s the only one on this team other than Adam Fox that you would look at and think offense. You would think offense before anything else, right? I mean, I don’t think you’re going to feel that way about like Gavricov or Borggan or Vakan, right? So, um I I feel like, you know, there would be a void in the Ranger lineup if Adam Fox is not there. And you saw what happened today. I mentioned this a couple of minutes ago, but the Rangers get a power play without Adam Fox. They go with five forwards. They had their goalie pulled late in the game. They have six forwards on the ice, no defenseman on the ice. So, I think you do need Scott Mora out there. I think you need to give him a real serious look at him quarterbacking that top power play unit. I realize it’s a large assignment for this Ranger team, but he’s the only guy, like I said, that feels like he’s somebody that could kind of quarterback a top power play unit. I I don’t think any other Ranger defenseman is really an ideal choice. I mean, you could get by with Schneider there, or maybe even Gabri, if you really want to get weird with it. You could do what they did today and go with five uh five forwards rather than four forwards and a defenseman. That’s at least an option. But I’d like to see Scott Moral get a chance. I mean, you traded for this guy. He’s, you know, a top draft pick for the Canes. is considered one of their biggest prospects. This is an opening. Make the best out of a bad situation. If Adam Fox has to miss any time, whether it’s one game, three games, five games, hopefully it’s no games, but how however many games it is, get Scott Mororrow out there, see what he can do, and see if he can excel. I mean, if you’re the Rangers, you should want this to happen. You should want Scott Morrow to be the guy that eventually establishes himself in this lineup. Nothing against guys like Vaka Ninan or even Robertson. I think they both done okay this season, but Morrow is the one that has by far the most upside of of that group. And so that being the case, you know, the Rangers, again, the phrase I just use is make the best out of a bad situation. Give him a chance, see what he can do out there, particularly on the top power play unit. And if Adam Fox misses time, I mean, I don’t even know what the the defense pairings are going to look like. I mean, do you break everything up? Do you move like certain players up the up the lineup? I mean, well, let’s look at it real quick now. We’ll see if we can figure it out on the fly here. So, if we don’t have Adam Fox, I mean, Gavricov is going to stay on the top pairing. That’s the one thing we can pretty much lock in. You know, maybe put Borggan with GA with Gavricov on the top pairing. Borggan is just back into the lineup. So, if you do that, you can then keep on the second pairing. I guess you would have Suzy on the left side and then probably I would say Schneider on the right side. That’s not a bad top four there. you know, it lacks any kind of like fireworks or any kind of flash, but you’ve got Gabriov and Borggan. You got Suzie who’s uh really exceeded expectations this season. Um, you know, a lot of us were really down on him after what we saw last year. But you got Susie with Schneider. I mean, you could get by with that. The third pairing is when it starts to get a little bit dicey, though, because at that point, I mean, I would put Morrow in the lineup. He’d be on the right side on the third pairing. And then I guess Robertson would would be out there as well. So, I mean, it’s not that bad. There’s no replacing Adam Fox. I think we all know that. We all understand that. But I I do feel like there’s been enough good play from these Ranger defenseman that if Adam Fox is out of the lineup just for a short absence that they can get by without him at least to an extent and everybody I mean look at as a call to arms, right? Adam Fox isn’t here, so we all have to step step up. That’s pretty much uh the long and short of it. But yeah, man, I I know I mentioned this earlier, but I have to mention this one more time. The lack of response to Adam Fox getting hit and knocked out of this game to me was just unacceptable on the part of the Rangers. I mean, this is one of your guys. he’s one of your, you know, captains, one of your alternate captains, one of the guys that wears the letter. And, um, you know, to me, you got to get back in somebody’s face and you got to get back after them. But obviously, fingers crossed that, uh, you know, Adam Fox’s injury is not too bad and he can get back into the lineup, uh, sooner rather than later. But I figure we can call it there for tonight. I don’t know if you guys can tell, my my voice is absolutely toast right now, so we’ll call this a little bit early. But thank you guys as always for tuning in. 1. Great discussion about Garand. I lean toward thinking they might have played better in front of the rookie — but your counterpoint was a very good one.

Re the actual game — You can give up 35 shots and win, but not when you get just 13 on net, including just 1 legitimate shot in the first (the other was a 30mph looper by Soucy from 60 feet), and just 4 in the third period. Shesterkin was basically the only reason this even resembled a competitive game.

  2. What the f*** is this problems team at home it's just become absolutely ridiculous I'm sick of it 11 shots on goal that is just f**** inexcusable they ought to give the tickets back to the f**** fans

  3. It's like how do you have the nerve to have 11 shots on goal how do you play like s*** in front of your fans all the time p I mean they still there was a time in the third period were they just stood around and just kept giving the f*** back to Tampa Bay with the most disgusting brand of hockey I have ever seen in my life and how the f*** somebody didn't put a f**** sticks for a while why and why is David Quinn with the same why why is David Quinn back he's like a bad luck charm

  4. How does this team get 13 shots on goal for the entire game how pathetic the way they played and not to stand up for Fox you have to be kidding me. To me you weren’t going to win this game anyway at least let Hagle know get after him not to hurt him the hit was clean but do something. To me the Rangers game plan is not working. I’m mean for god sakes they couldn’t get out of our D zone. It just seems to me something else is going on behind closed doors that we aren’t aware of. I guess we are in for another painful long season. I hope I’m wrong.

  5. Unfortunately, this is just who they are. Team is not talented enough to compete with the top teams. And the team does not put in a consistent A-level effort. When is the last time we heard anyone else say…the Rangers are a difficult team to play against. That is entirely within the control of an individual player and the team collectively. Disappointed that Miller has not been more of a leadership spark.
