One of the toughest things I’ve seen

So, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like this. During tonight’s Islanders Flyers game, Kyle Palmary is injured after a collision near the boards. The Flyers have the puck and it seems to be an injury to Paul Mary’s leg or knee. So, the play’s not blown dead. It ends up turning back the other way, however, at which point Paul Mary on his way slowly to the bench strips the Flyer defenseman who’s carried the puck back into his zone passes it to Druan who hits Heinaman for the goal. And yes, this did count. Paul Mary hadn’t been replaced. He’s still, you know, an active player. And if you’re wondering, well, why wasn’t this offside? Offside is not called when the defending team carries the puck back into their own zone. So, this is really one of the only cases where you can see a cherry-picking player essentially impact the play like this. But yeah, Ballsy move to Paul Mary and as for his condition, he did not return to the game. And as Patrick W said, it didn’t look good. Watching the collision behind the net, his left knee just bends and twists in a way that to me, as W said, looks really bad. Obviously, he’s an important piece on that team playing topline minutes with 17 points this year as well. Anyway, people talk the toughness of hockey players. This is toughness. Not only focusing on the play, but doing something and really anything when your knee is up to try to help your team. Impressive. And this wasn’t a nothing goal. As I mentioned, the Flyers were up 3 nothing to this point. The Islanders would score the next three. Matthew Schaefer, future Calder winner, would get his eighth goal of the year, beating some bum you may have heard of, what’s his name again? Bobby our for most goals by a teenager through 25 games as a defenseman. That is his eighth of the season before Anders Lee ties it up in the second. The Flyers, however, would get the full two points. One of my favorite stories of the year has to be Trevor Zegris. He’s just looked like such a happy player. He got the third Flyers goal, then also scored a pretty nasty one in the shootout. Normally I don’t care about the shootout, but Zegris is a machine. He’s not missed yet this season and is 17 for 25 in his career, which is absurd. He’s a special player in the shootout. But that’s all I’ve got. Let me know what you guys thought of the game, the injury, and the assist. Have you ever seen this before? I mean, there’s been big shifts in assist by injured player, but I’ve never seen someone actually on the way to the bench do this. At least I can’t remember. Let me know. See you next time.

Let’s talk about the really cool assist we just saw during the New York Islands and Philadelphia Flyers game. All that and more on today’s NHL hockey video!

  1. Great video as always. Thank you for not being afraid of releasing shorter videos like this, it is much appreciated. You don't beat around the bush for 10 minutes to make a 2 minute point like 99% of hockey videos. Straight to the point with personal touch on top. Kudos, keep em coming!

  2. This reminds me of a similar situation that happened in the Finnish SM-Liiga about 10-15 years ago. One of the players on my team, Rauman Lukko, injured their shoulder and just shot the puck towards the goal from the blue line just before going to the bench. He scored with that shot and immediately went to the locker room.

  3. I neighbor of mine can't understand why I loathe soccer. Just watching this play is a reminder of the physical toughness and sportsmanship
(playing through contact) that hockey players possess. Understandable for a sport that PENALIZES diving! Unlike soccer!
