ESPN reacts to Josh Allen outplayed Aaron Rodgers as Buffalo Bills beat Steelers 26-7 to improve 8-4

And for more we take you out to Acasher where we are pleased. Lead NFL analyst on CBS Tony Romo joins us now. Tony, this was two vastly different halves of football. What do you point to in the material change at halftime for Buffalo that rendered this result? Well, I think they adjusted a little bit better than Pittsburgh at the beginning. They had a corner blitz that resulted in Bosa getting one-on-one and then obviously the sack that creates a touchdown. Benford scores and then the interception when Rudolph comes in. That was the biggest swing of the game because right there it was just a field position game and it was kind of come down to possibly a late score and that really put the onus on Pittsburgh and they just weren’t able to overcome you know some of the deficiencies and you could see some of those you know on the outside a little bit right now and then on top of it their inability to stop the run when they ran a very similar basically two plays in the run game over and over again and can impose their will. I mean that that would be concerning if I was Pittsburgh, but also a great sign for Buffalo down two tackles. You can still go in and just make the game simple. You point to that play at halftime and it really felt like insult to injury cuz Rogers is dealing with something there on the wrist, the fractures, and then comes up bloodied with the nose. Talk to me about the mechanics of operating as a quarterback at this level on one and a half arms and and then bloodied in it as well. Well, I think he handled it well. I think they had a good plan for it, but they couldn’t run the football today. Buffalo did a great job coming out and neutralizing it, making it a passing contest, and they don’t have the weapons on the outside consistently enough to do that. And especially with the structure of this Bills defense and how they make it look this way, and then come from over here, they just had Rogers under duress and obvious passing downs. But it was the inability of Pittsburgh to be able to run the ball that was the difference outside of obviously Buffalo’s ability to run the ball. And it’s a Buffalo defense that has struggled to stop the run. Still just 50ome yards for this offense. Outgained by 206 yards, they’re 166 in total, the fewest in a home game since 1994. Tony, you pointed to those missing pieces up front for Buffalo. Uh uh the mercenaries come in and they find themselves a win on the road. What sort of confidence builder is that for a team that surely needed one? that it’s huge because you have to change your entire game plan. If you saw that, it was literally get the ball out quick screens, quick passes, flats, get the running backs in motion, do things in the pass game. I think they took one pass in the first half that I saw was 10 yards or more downfield and that was still in rhythm while they chipped the edges, but it was just run the football. They had to run the football. But when you bring backup offensive tackles in, you can still run the ball technically different than if the guards were hurt, but you can’t pass protect. And so I think it was a great plan by Buffalo and the way that they came out and really just executed it. From Dallas to Pittsburgh, everywhere in between, Tony Romo always has us covered. Appreciate you, pal. Thank you guys. Have a good week. A full holiday week for our team with the NFL on CBS as they bring you a couple of highstakes matchups. Most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in NFL history. It was only a matter of time. Josh Allen distancing himself further from Jaylen Herz and crossing the former record holder in Cam Newton. More to come here on CBS Sports HQ postgame. We got highlights and reaction from across the NFL. The Steelers down, but are they out? No matter where you’re looking, you’re getting drama in the NFL. Back in studio with the guys and credit to the Jets for their third victory of the season, but I think maybe exploration required on the other side. And JJ, the question sort of becoming for Atlanta when when and who is held responsible for what the season has not been supposed to be a step forward. It feels like they’re regressing. Oh, there’s no question that the Atlanta Falcons are regressing. This is a bad loss for Atlanta and I want to give respect to the New York Jets, but when Behan Robinson goes for nearly 200 yards uh rushing and and receiving when you have Yeah. Michael Pennix Jr.’s out. That’s okay. You still got your $160 million quarterback and Kurt Cousins over there, right? Oh, he doesn’t get it done. Service lever. Those are the facts, right? The the the Jets are on their backup veteran and Tyrod Taylor, but they don’t have Garrett Wilson. They traded away their other two great players a couple weeks ago. You got to win this game. There’s no there’s no question you have to win this game. We thought what we thought that this NFC South was going to be between the Bucks and the Falcons. And the Falcons made moves this off season by trading away future first round picks because they said, “You know what? That first round pick’s going to be in the 20s anyway. We’re obviously going to be winning. We’re going to the playoffs. Who cares? That’s really a second round pick.” Now look at him. He’s going to be a top seven pick going to the Rams, right? Um, and so you lose to this Jets team and the folks there in Atlanta are feeling some heat on their seat. Uh, head coach Ree Morris, general manager Terry Fontau, everyone can share and blame with this, right? You can say there’s some personnel issues and you can say there’s some coaching issues as well. I I’m not going to sit here and tell you it is one thing when everyone is going to be able to get their share of the blame. And so now we’re very much on watch with Atlanta if there is going to be some sort of shakeup there. We have seen shakeup at the coordinator and uh and assistant coaching positions the last two seasons in Atlanta. Will there be more, not just this upcoming week, but certainly at the end of the year? I’m glad you segment those two ideas of personnel and staff and where responsibility lies because Mac, we’ve seen in the past there are certain teams that despite their shortcomings, they’re closer to success than they certain than they appear at this given moment. Is this is this that type of team where if you can get a higher right, you’re there or because of the quarterback situation, you you still feel like you’re you’re pretty far off if you’re Atlanta. Well, coaching is very very important. It’s not like this team doesn’t have talent and I do believe Michael Penn is a talented quarterback. He’s more than a serviceable guy when you look at his skill set. Be Robinson is a top three, top four running back in the National Football League in just terms of pure talent. He has that. Drake London is wide receiver one. You look at the offensive line, even though they’re missing McGary, the right tackle, they still got talent on the offensive line. And the young players that you talked about that they traded up for, James Pierce and and and Walker, those guys have really shown flashes as well. So, they have pieces. It’s something about the disconnect. And with Atlanta in the last seven games, they’re one and six. In the last seven games, they’re one and six. Even without Michael Penn Jr., Kurt Cousins could win you ball games, especially in a matchup like today. Think about some of the embarrassing losses that we watch with Atlanta. Shut out earlier in the year against Carolina when they were trying to figure things out. Losing to Miami, you know, losing to Carolina, allowing them to come back once again. Bryce had a historical day in franchise history. So when you look at other organizations that were kind of straddling the fence, they kind of got things together. You look at the Miami Dolphins for instance, they’re playing better football. Carolina has surpassed Atlanta in their division, and that’s something that we didn’t think of that could be a realistic thing in terms of the expectations for Atlanta. So yes, it’s been a it’s been a shakeup, but I don’t know exactly what they do moving forward, but clearly they got to get the structure in place. Yeah, you made a great point. You said something about Kurt Cousins can win, but can he win? He didn’t win last year and he hasn’t won since he’s been integrated into the starting lineup. So, right now, the Atlanta Falcons biggest problem is they’re not playing team football. You know, defense may get some stops, but offense don’t pick up those key third downs or they don’t score in the red zone. Bian Robson today had almost a total of 200 yards.
