Of all the shortcomings this season, this is probably the strangest one. You could tell me Sirianni and Patullo are simply just bad offensive play callers and designers, and aren’t capable of anything better.
But do they not even watch the film where Calcaterra has been awful for two years now at run blocking. Having a 6th OL or signing a pure blocking TE would be a lot better
I can’t stand when teams run 12 personnel, and I hate it even more when the 2nd TE you’re bringing in can’t block the sunlight, let alone a defensive lineman
Calcaterra has to have dirt on Sirianni because how is he still getting nfl snaps.
Granson can’t be worse. Why not give him some of those snaps? Or have Goedert stay in on running plays and sub in one of the others for select passing downs? Just poor coaching.
This is where you can blame the coaching staff. The design of the play is good (stoutland) but since you never run that action and throw to the WR CJGJ doesnt even look at him. Not marrying the run with tbe pass is killing this team… and on top of it Calcaterra cant make that block
Did we run 12 personnel last year? How do we manage or it was just sheer luck
When he had a couple nice receptions last year I liked him but now I’m questioning why he made the team
It’s frustrating that they don’t mix it up and pass more when he is out on the field. If only to just keep defenses guessing as to whether it’s a run or a pass, and not necessarily because Calcaterra is good at catching passes.
It’s on coaches at this point. There’s no hope he just turns into a great blocker.
Why didn’t Tank get a carry?
Play was so predictable CJ didn’t even run with the motion WR lol, shit didn’t even look at the guy in motion he was 100% sure it was a run
Ugh. Being at the game it’s hard to tell some nuances. Seeing breakdowns and film over the next few days can be real depressing (but enlightening) after a loss like this.
Tbf I don’t think anybody at TE would have gotten upfield at an angle fast enough to block 93. The Bears straight up snuffed this play out.
coaching malpractice to continue to put him in this position.
Two things about that, 93 on Chicago knew where that ball was going before it was snapped (as did the rest of the defense presumably). And also 81 had to chase down his block. Not sure if that’s just a bad design or his fault for lining up too far over.
This is a prime example of why the offense failing this year is more on Nick than anyone else. Patullo calls the plays (poorly, obviously) but it is Nicks offense design wise. Why the hell is this happening?
Why don’t we draft blocking tight ends
That’s because KP is a cancer to this team.
And there’s still people out there trying to primarily blame Hurts and not coaching personnel. Ridiculous.
Its funny cause Calcaterra played just as many if not more snaps in 2024 at this point. And he was nowhere near as much of a negative. This coaching staff genuinely has no idea how to use their personnel properly. I’m not even sure a decent blocking TE could make the block that Grant is asked to do based on how they’re lined up. It’s too hard. A lot of the what the O-line is being asked to do is too hard. Steen, Jurgens, and Dickerson just can’t move with power and explosiveness
Also this play is dead because nobody on the O-line beats their block and the ENTIRE defense knows they’re running this. Just bad design, execution, and results.
Adding a sixth o-lineman might help. Not sure we even have six healthy linemen at this point.
YESSS DUDE gets beat every f’n time
Nobody noticed Jack Stoll went to the Saints, I guess? 🤷
Calcaterra did okay blocking on punts from the couple times I noticed… but y’all would probably wave that off
3 years ago week 2 or 3 against the Vikings. Play is a boot right, entire line, receivers, and backfield minus one player shift left, one player moves right with Hurts.
That player – Calcaterra. Missies two players completely, Hurts sacked for a 6-7 yard loss.
Malpractice then considering Hurts was coming off the prior season, late rib injury – here we go again putting QB1 at risk.
It was known THEN!!!!
How the fuck is this bum still on the field?!?!
Does the media ever ask why?
This angers me because we known since last year that is calcaterrra biggest weak point! And when godert was hurt roughly 6 games last year we seen the worst part of it!
It’s the easiest thing in the world to just design him to fake this and leak out with a pop pass from Hurts. It’s already a run/pass option.
Everytime they crash hard on him as the TE in the run, just run it again and pop it out for an 8+ yard gain.
You do this enough and it will force the defender to sit and react. It will give leverage in the run game because he knows if he crashes it just goes over his head.
That’s the whole POINT of a RPO.
But will we?
Fuck no.
This is something we’ve known for years. He’s got hands when we need hands here and there, but a blocker HE IS NOT
CantBlockaTerra
So, what are we missing that the coaches are seeing?
This is one that the blame Jalen Hurts crowd (in my view, unfairly) can’t blame him for. He hasn’t played great the last 2 weeks (nor has the o-line) but the continued use of Calcaterra in these blocking situations is straight coaching malpractice.
I also get why Hurts may be pushing back on coaching a bit this year. Trust is earned and what has Patullo done to show that he knows enough about X’s and O’s that Hurts should defer to him.
Also – as nick foles said – Patullo needs to go sit his ass up in the coaches box like a normal oc so he can actually see defensive coverages/adjust/etc
Also not using Tank for at least ONE series is criminal. Nick needs to take some accountability. Dudes pressers piss me off. Blah blah blah.
