Max Brosmer on His First NFL Start: It Was A Tough Day

Tough day today. It was It’s NFL, man. It’s it’s it’s tough. And, you know, I thought um you know, give give credit to Seattle’s defense and um got some great playmakers over there. Great scheme. Um I thought they had a great plan for us and um you know, we didn’t make the plays where where we should have and I thought our defense did a good job of of holding us in the game for the majority of the game there. And um you know, we didn’t capitalize on moments we should have and um it’s tough to go out and try and win games and we can’t keep the ball in our hands and um ultimately I take credit for that and um we got to be better. So, questions. Max, can you take us through the the pick six and what happened on that play from your perspective? Yeah, it’s tough. You know, it’s uh I love the play call. I thought um you know, he put us in the best situation um to let our playmakers make plays and um and ultimately the defense sniffed it out. They did a good job of of getting to me quick and you know, ultimately that the 10 or 12 yards that you know they it’s fourth one, right? and it’s either make a play or eat it and they get, you know, the 12 yards that I give up on the runback. They would get back on offense right if I threw the ball out and they’d start 12 yards back from where the ball was and ultimately I made a bad decision with the football. Um, and it cost us heavy and early the game like that um when you’re giving energy to the other team like that um you know it’s tough and we got to do a better job you know me specifically of keeping the ball in our hands. What are your as you’re rolling out there what are your options in theory in terms of who? Yeah, typical typical boot play you have, you know, your flat, your over, and you know, your high part, your high component of of, you know, your boot play. And that’s that’s typical for most uh most of your boots and nakeds. Um, and they did a good job covering it. Um, and but again, that’s my responsibility to take care of the football um and not my responsibility to make try try to make something happen when when it’s not there. And um, you know, I got to do a better job keeping the ball in our hands and um, getting ready for the next drive. just from a speed of the game perspective, like did you feel like you were going through your reads on time, too fast? Like, how did you feel? Um, you know, I think, you know, I’ll go back and watch the film a little bit and I I feel like I was a maybe half a click fast to the reads and um you know, I feel like that’s feeling the flow of the game, feeling the flow of the pocket, feeling the flow of of conceptually what’s happening down the field. And um you know I I got to a couple couple routes too quickly today and um we could have had some bigger hits on those completions, but you know throwing the ball you know a half a second too early sometimes and sometimes you can make those throws if you anticipate well and um but there’s there’s a a very small gap where if you throw it too early it’s not going to be you know there’s no chance to complete it but um you know that’s a a learning moment for me and something that I’ll continue to to grow on from there and and use it as experience for you know for the next time. Max, on the pick six, it looked like CJ’s coming in front of you there. Is that just a play fake or did you have an option to hand off there? Uh, no. No handoff. No, it’s it’s uh, you know, typical, you know, it’s called like power pass in the NFL. You’re full slide, cut the end, and and go. Um, but again, it’s it’s a tough it was a tough play and, you know, it happens and you have to eat it. Um, and move on from it, but learn from it most importantly is, you know, next time that situation comes up is don’t put the ball in harm’s way and just take what take what they give you. And in that moment it was take the sack and don’t risk the ball. A lot of your uh defensive teammates were saying that they despite the fact when you turned it over the first time, you still kind of came back and so that resilience to do so in this environment against one of the really good teams this year in the NFL. What have they said to you like briefly after this about how you conducted yourself in your first start? Yeah, I I mean I just would credit the entire locker room here. I think our locker room here is very very special. And um the the ability to stay together after a tough loss and tough plays, tough drives is really hard to do in the NFL. It’s hard to do in college, but in the NFL it’s really hard to do. And that’s one of our our team superpowers. And you know, I felt I felt their love. I felt um their support. And they don’t have to do that. Like they could just let me be and and move on with their their next drive, but or after the game for the next game. And but they don’t do that. And our team doesn’t do that. Um, and you feel the support here and whether you played well or or had a tough day, you’re going to get the same support and same love from the rest of the team. When you’re going through it and feel like you are sped up in the reads, what’s the key to kind of getting back in the timing there? Yeah. Uh, you know, it’s it’s difficult to make that adjustment. maybe maybe maybe it’s a you know a really focused second half or focused second quarter maybe adjustment that you make through and um I think honestly it comes from experience and um I think that you know I could have done a better job maybe of you know through the rest of the game noticing that quicker maybe um and trying to slow myself down a little more um and you know I I pride myself on trying to get the ball out um you know in a timely fashion but sometimes when it’s too fast the rest of the concept doesn’t develop the way it’s supposed to And schematically speaking, we had some great great concepts today that ended up opening up pretty well. And whether it was a tick too fast getting there or move the spot to try to get there quicker, like it’s it’s something you have to learn and and go through. And you know, I’ll definitely use today as an experience to, you know, and learning moment to to get better from there. And um I’ll be able to look back on some of the plays today and be like, I know I was too fast here and I’ll slow myself down maybe a half a click slower next time to get that completion. In terms of quarterbacks, is it easier then to learn how to slow down than how to speed that up progression wise? Yeah, I mean I I would argue that I think um you know I I think it just depends on you know how you’re how you’re processing through the through the reads. I think um when you have some really talented playmakers here with Justin and Jay and Jaylen who are who seem like the fastest guys in the entire world um you feel sped up maybe where I have to get this ball out fast to these guys cuz they’re going to make the play and in reality you can you know you can take a breath for a second because they’re they’re going to get to the right spot at the right time. Um and trusting that they know the timing just as well as you do. And you know again that’s something that I’ll learn from from this moment and and some of these plays today. um and go I’ll go watch the film, these guys will watch the film and we’ll get better from today. Max, what was your communication like with Kevin throughout the game? Yeah, I that’s one thing that I think that he does a really good job of and whether it’s a again a tough day or a really a really solid day for the offense and the team in general, he’s the same guy the entire game. Um, and you know, maybe it’s, you know, he he comes after a tough play that I had and like coaches me up right away, which I like I’m all eager to because I just want to get better. And you know, him giving those coaching coaching lessons and those those points of emphasis throughout the game are really important. And um, you know, and then Mike, he’s the same guy with the same intonation, the same, you know, vocal tone the rest the whole game. Um, which is really great for a quarterback to keep everybody even. Is there anything he said today or a moment you had with him that’s going to stick with you? Yeah. Yeah. I think, you know, we’ve we had a good conversation after the game and um that’s something that I’ll keep between us and um again, you talk we talk about how this team stays together and that doesn’t happen unless it’s top down and from from Quy from KO, the rest of the team. That’s that’s an emphasis from the top down and I felt that talking with him after the game and um there’s I’m always open to getting coached. I want hard coaching and he does that well, but he also loves up on you and supports you when you need it. And there’s a good balance to both. And he’s a really good um example of what that looks like of of tough coaching and and support. And I really appreciate that from him and you know what he’s done for the team from that from that regard. Thanks everybody. Thank you.

  1. I gotta say, as a Vikings fan for 37 years, it's very freeing to give up on this franchise. I no longer care if the Vikings lose, I'm finally free.

  2. All the QBs in this room have been let down, wentz died on the field JJ has been turned into arguably the biggest meme in American sports history and Max was set up to be Nathan peterman. THIS is a disgrace. KOC should be on the hot seat. anyone else besides Kyle shanahan and Andy Reid would be getting fired in January.

  3. To the people saying he played well. No he didn't, he was one of the worst starting QBs in NFL history, and he had a NEGATIVE adjusted yards per attempt, meaning his interceptions had more yards returned than his net yards in completions. That's not just bad, it's historically bad.

  4. I still believe in JJ. I cant believe all this ridiculous support Max who is a nobody that did terrible, yet people trash talk JJ. JJ lost an entire year. Watching isnt playing. JJ will be great. Give him some grace please.

  5. the oline cant hold the line, the oline cant block for the run,,,then on the road and against the seahawaks, and questionable play calling… then add the fact KOC had JJM practicing along with brosmer on a short week due to thanksgiving and the game being on the road…KOC failed to focus all reps to brosmer. why allow JJM to take practice snaps when he's on concussion protocol…all of this failed brosmer.

  6. Considering this was his first start against a top defense at their stadium with 1 week of first team reps, no O line protection to speak of, and every wide receiver dropping passes, yeah, the guy didn't play well, but he also got thrown to the fucking wolves.

  7. I feel like Max Brosmer has more poise in the pocket than McCarthy. There might be something there with him if our OL can hold strong. Also, KOC playcalling has been pretty bad this season. The routes take way too long to develop – especially given how our OL has been playing. We need a quick passing game! Also, Seattle was a less than ideal first opponent, that's for sure.

  8. After watching these games with the young quarterbacks, the coaching on the offensive side is just throwing them to the wolves. The coach says every week he has to do better, but then nothing changes. No help in blocking, no quick or slant passes. Passing the ball on 4th and 1, when you have a fullback. The way the Vikings defense was playing, they could have at least kept it close, got some momentum, and possibly win the game. The only way this coach might win is if he had a Josh Allen. But he would probably screw that up too.

  9. He has a moron for a head coach KOC had Darnold looking like ass the last two games last season and he haas ruined JJMcCarthy and will do the same with Brosmer

  10. The pick six is on Kevin. The game was 3-0 if we kick the easy field goal it would have been 3-3. Defense was playing great and kicking it would have kept us it it early. Kevin hung max out to dry.
