This is REVEALING for the Spurs…
This is revealing for the San Antonio Spurs as they lose the last game of a road trip to the Minnesota Timberwolves. And there were things that stuck out in this game that the San Antonio Spurs are going to need to work on for them to really achieve the goals that they have set for themselves with their great play to start the season. And we’re going to discuss it here on Spurs Digest with your host Ken Warner. And guys, without further ado, I know you guys just watched it, and if you didn’t, here’s the update on what had happened in the game. Only the Spurs second doubledigit loss of the season to the Minnesota Timberwolves. And really, the Spurs outplayed the Timberwolves for three quarters, or at least played with them. I think they outplayed them a little bit through three quarters, but that fourth quarter, as you see, 36-19 for the Minnesota Timberwolves. They really got hot from the three-point line and we were not. I know this is the end of the road trip. You start to lose a little bit of energy. You start to lose a little bit. We don’t obviously have our requisite pieces. We are missing Victor Wyama still. We are missing Stfan Castle still. Two of our three best players on our roster. So, we’re already at a disadvantage when you’re playing against Anthony Edwards, when you’re playing against Nas Reed, when you’re playing against Dante Dancenzo when he’s letting the ball fly the way he was tonight. But these two guys right here off the bench, we’re going to get to them in more detail. Love the way they played. They played with a lot of energy and effort. Dylan Harper just continues to show in his very young career that he is a force to be reckoned with so far in this season. So far, this is without today’s game. 13 points, three and a half rebounds, three and a half assists, only one and a half turnovers per game, 48% from the floor, 35% from three. So, you have Dylan Harper, who is just he’s coming into the league and just playing at such a high level. And I was going to talk about it before, but you know what? Let’s just talk about him right now. The way that he can get downhill and he is not afraid to go amongst the trees. He attacked Rudy Gobear multiple times in this game and just the way he can finish and is not afraid to get to the basket. He understands what his skill set is and doesn’t try to do too much. The patience he plays with like, okay, I’m not afraid to go right to the trees. He knows I’ve got to attack shooters. Sorry, not shooters. I got to attack shot blockers at the body, right at their chest. That’s how you neutralize shot blockers. Even though Rudy Gobear has long arms, it’s that quick first step. It’s that quick bounce that he has. Dylan Harper going to be a problem in this league for a long period of time. But let’s talk about this team as a whole. And as you see here, we didn’t shoot bad from the floor. We shot 52% from the floor. We were getting to the paint. Almost 60 points in the paint. They’re a team that can get to the paint as well. So, the paint points kind of mirrored each other. We didn’t get on the break all that much, but there are two things that we really did not do and that led to the loss that we just endured. We didn’t defend the three and we didn’t shoot the three. Well, we only shot 24% from the three and they shot 46% from three, 17 overall. Ant was shooting well from three. As I said earlier, Dven Chenzo was shooting well from three. Jaden McDaniels hit some timely threes as well. And the thing about our the threes that they were getting, especially in that second half, is they were getting not contested threes, there was one specifically where two people went with a roll and Anthony Edwards at the top of the key gets a wideopen look. And this is already him coming off hitting a three of the possession before. It’s like we cannot allow their best shooter, arguably probably their best shooter the way he has shot it over the last couple years. We cannot let him get that open of looks. if he’s going to get those, those are layups for him. So, we just got into a position where we lost a little bit of offensive rhythm and we weren’t hitting the shots from the perimeter and it seemed like once they started to hit the Timberwolves that is started to get going, especially within that second half, fourth quarter more specific, they were getting to the paint and just kicking it out. Devenenzo corner three. Dven left wing three. Anthony Edwards top of the key three. Jaden McDaniels left wing three and it was just there were backbreaking ones even when we got okay let’s go on a run let’s get a little oh we get a three from Kell oh we get the two free throws from De’arren Fox on the play they ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch challenge and then oh Jada McDaniels three takes that from a nine-point game to a 12-point game. We missed a couple key ones down the stretch, but overall just a team that was missing a little oomph and missing a little bit of that closing WBY naturality that you’re going to have, the kind of gravity that he pulls. There there’s been times throughout this stretch without WY. We’ve been we’ve been good without Webby as a whole, but there have been times where our offense gets a little lethargic because we start to play a little bit of one-on-one. We lose a little bit of the ball movement. And I’ll go back to this because another key thing was we got out assisted double 35-7. That’s not going to get it done. We just broke the streak the other night. I want to say it was 230 something games. They’re saying it on the cast, but over 230 games of 20 assists or more. That streak was broken for the Spurs. And again, we don’t get 20 assists in a game. that’s in a staple of this roster, of this organization for a long period of time, is moving the ball and getting the players that we need to in rhythm. And I think we when we go a little bit too much one-on-one basketball, that leads to us not having the greatest of offensive possessions at times. But overall, I don’t think the team played bad. There’s just sometimes where you lose a game. And the Timberwolves are a good team. This is a team that though they get doubted going into the year by your mass media. We’ve seen them as one of the final four teams for the past two seasons. So, they’re a team that knows how to play and they know how to play well together. They really came together towards the second half of the season when Julius Randle came back from their injury and they played well. They played well down the stretch. You can’t ask for much more. Champenny didn’t shoot great. Barnes didn’t shoot great. That hurt us. But overall, Fox looked really good. Vel again coming off of his phenomenal game that he had the other night. He had put in 22. Kell Johnson put in 22. Dylan Harper had 17. We scored 112 as a unit. It was really just some timely threes that we weren’t hitting on, but other than that, shot well from the floor, shot well from the free throw line, didn’t turn the ball over at an obscene rate, only 10 turnovers on the night. De’Arren Fox had the most with three, and as a guard, you’ll take that. So, I didn’t mind the way we played, honestly. It just reveals the fact that we need to play better defensively. And of course, not that we were going to be like this team can go win it all without the best players on our roster, but like you get to these games, you get to these spots where you just you lose it a little bit. And what this what this game truly revealed to me was that the San Antonio Spurs just need to get better and better at squelling runs. That’s the thing about it. the great teams, they don’t allow 10-point runs to become a 25-7. It becomes a 10 to2, a 12-2. Basketball is a game of runs. Teams are going to get hot for possessions, but it’s okay if we call a timeout. Are we going to get a good set and a good possession offensively? It’s okay, now we’ve got that possession. Now, we settles down. Can we go get a stop defensively? That’s what makes those teams great. That’s what the Thunder can do extremely well is, okay, this team’s on a 100-0 run. Timeout, Shay, we’re going to run some action with you. Get a good look and then defensively we’re going to buckle up and we’re going to make sure that they don’t continue to just go and go. Obviously, from time to time, you’re going to get that. But we weren’t even we weren’t even playing defense to allow them to get hard looks. It was too many easy looks. Fox again on the night 25 and four 10 of 15 like the way that he played he was very great good in the first half I wish they would have played Fox and Castle not sorry Castle I apologize Fox and Harper a little bit more together in that fourth quarter it when that run was going on I would have loved to have Harper and Fox two creators so when you get Fox and Harper going downhill in the paint they can dish out to each other and you can have your secondary creation off of action, off of movement. I would have loved to have seen Harper in those scenarios with Fox because it seemed like they were playing him. Okay, if Fox is in, then Harper’s out. If Harper is in, then Fox is out. And I would like to see them and them more as a tandem together because I think that’s where we’re going to get the best of them. But the thing about the San Antonio Spurs over the year, we’re 13-6. We’re still looking great. We’re still a top five team in the Western Conference now. I think we’ve fallen to five as we were in four last night with the loss. Denver, I believe, slides ahead of us there. Five and four on the road. Understandable. Eight- six in the West in a good Western Conference. That’s good. Five and six against 500 teams and above. We have to remember some of these have been without Weby. We’re five and two without Wemby though. So, the thing about this team is we’re still learning to win and we’re still learning to win in big spots. We have a pretty brutal schedule coming up just because we’re on such a trip roadwise and having to move and shout out to us. NBA Cup, we hopefully can get to the point where the NBA Cup is ours. I would I would love for WBY to be back for this. Love for Castle to be back for this. I think it’s more likely that WebM is back than Castle from the reports that have been circulating. But we get to go home for a minute to pack bags, get to play a Memphis team that’s going to play us tough, but we can get that W. That’s the earliest Webby can be back for. I don’t assume that he will be back for that game. I don’t know, but that’s the earliest that like the timetable says that he could be back for. Then we go on a backto back to Orlando. I see him more likely probably playing on Friday against Cleveland. if you if the timeline of him being back on the second makes sense. But this guy right here, when he comes back, I want him back for the tournament cuz I want this team to be in serious scenarios where they care. I know within the NBA Cup format and landscape that the up caring has been up and down. You have players who sat early on, people really love the cup. Now it’s like a, oh, it’s just a thing that happens. But when you get to the chance of, oh well, we can mess around and win it. That’s where I think it’s good for these teams. When the Pacers got to the conference or got to the finals and lost to the Lakers, I thought that was good for that team because they got into situations and we saw them not be scared when they were in the playoffs last year when they got to game seven of the finals. Obviously, Hallebertton goes down and they lose to the Thunder, but they were in a lot of big games and they never folded in those big games. I think this could be really good for the Spurs to do the same thing. And I would love for at least Wemby to be there. If not, Castle to be there, but I think most likely Webby would be the guy because he seems to be closer to return than Castle. They really have no estimated timetable for Castle. But let me know what you guys thought in the comments on today’s game. Do you guys think it was just a he from three, not much to worry about, or is there some underlying problems with the San Antonio Spurs that you think that we can rectify but just need to be worked on and something that we work towards in the forward moving forward? Dylan Harper had a good game but we need our three point shooters to show up and we can’t let up those big runs
Our defense sucks with out Wemby and Stephon.
When teams beat the Spurs it’s when they hit a high percentage of 3s. And teams seem to get a high percentage of wide open shots and that’s poor coaching
I thought Fox was the worst player on the floor defensively. I didn't even notice his good offensive game because of it.
Excellent, realistic analysis, Keenan. We had a shooting slump, we stood around on offense (not much ball movement or people movement), TWolves “broke” our defense too many times, and they shot well. It happens. I’m sure the team learned from this and we can all stay positive as they move into this tough stretch. Keep pounding the rock!
Everytime we play a good guard we lose, ant, curry, booker
Not a winning team as they are setup so far!
DEFENDING THE THREE & S.A. Spurs are mutually incompatible, and that's death to this team. Spurs modern identity is 100% DEFENCE — it is what their entire roster and development strategy is built around. That requires both paint & perimeter lockdown D or it won't matter how good they shoot; they'll just be too vulnerable to any team having a good night shooting from distance. Weird thing is that Carter Bryant, Castle, Sochan, Wemby, 'Swipa', and Vassel, should all be very capable perimeter matchup defenders. So, this seems like a team D problem: they never figured out how to collectively manage screens, switching, help with penetration kick outs, etc. Coach gotta Coach, now!
Well said Sir. Great points. That’s what I saw too. A lot of standing around and watching one on one basketball instead of motion basketball.
Why we stopped doing that I don’t know when we had been moving the ball so well in our recent wins.
De'aron Fox ONLY SHOT 15 TIMES DURING THE WHOLE GAME???? THAT'S THE PROBLEM. HE IS F**** TRASH WHEN IT'S TIME FOR HIM TO BE MR CLUTCH HE DOESN'T DO IT IN SAN ANTONIO FOR SOME REASON. He doesn't play aggressive at all 🤷🏾♂️
The question is when is Wemby coming back? Can someone answer that question an estimate guess some type of a timeframe how much longer is he going to be out? We need him badly. Please somebody tell the big Center I think his name is Luke Cornett with a K please he need to learn how to shoot a 15 foot jumper. He need to work on his mid range game. He need to look at the bastard when he get the ball below the file line, please my Brother they paying you a lot of money work on your game. This is your homework assignment every day like school except you’re getting paid millions of dollars.
Sohan look like he was not even interested in the game like he was lost. It was like he don’t even belong out there like he was a high school kid with opportunities to play in the NBA game. I’m like what is this dude doing? Why is he even out there? I see trade all day with that dude trade trade trade trade trade.
With or without Wemby and Castle, there’s something concerning about their perimeter defense. Like not even being close to shooters over the last few years
Vassell was the reason, he was hitting his mid range. I don’t know why he kept shooting the threes when
They weren’t falling for him
